October 2015 Skate Regina News Issue No. 1 Dear Skaters and Families; Welcome all to our very first newsletter! We certainly hope you will like our rubrics, news, tips and introductions. For those who have been with us for years, you know how new this is to us. In fact, we all know how we are trying to be more modern, more proactive, and more present in your children's success in skating. Modernizing our website was not an easy task and yet, we are overcoming issues every day. This has greatly helped our team to come together around core issues: how early we should plan for our seasons and better analyze our numbers to that effect, prioritize where we want to be, what we want to do and really: who we want to be. Becoming more efficient with our hard earned fundraising money also means asking less from you all, for a better use of it. It also means presenting and justifying how it should be spent. Our club has evolved a lot in the past few years: more sessions, new programs, and more choices of arenas throughout town. We have not changed our fees in years, we help out our skaters ready to drop out for financial reasons and reach out to the communities at large such as the Heritage Community Center. Coaches’ CornerOctober 2015

October is here!

Welcome everybody to another exciting winter season at Skate Regina. It’s great to see so many returning faces and a special welcome to all of our new skaters.

As most of you will be lacing up your skates for the first time or for the first time in a while, let me give you a little glimpse in to what we have in store for you this season and some helpful tips to get you started on the right foot.

I would first like to introduce myself. My name is Vicki Schultz and I am the new Skating Director here at Skate Regina. My husband Dave and I just moved to the city in April and we are so excited to be a part of this wonderful club.

New Programs for 2015/16

CanPOWERSkating: This year we are so excited to bring our members some new programs as well as revitalizing some of our existing programs. You’ll notice two sessions of CanPowerSkating on our calendar. Skate Canada developed the only Nationally Recognized Power Skating Program in Canada which requires coaches to attain a separate certification/education. There are 6 levels to the program and we are going to begin by dividing skaters in to Junior (Level 1) and Advanced (Levels

2-6) for their 45min sessions. By offering this program, we will be able to build on the skill development our young skaters are learning at the CanSkate level and continue working great technique through their hockey/ringette years. Requirements for this program are full equipment, sticks and helmets with cage/full visor.

Junior Prep: We are restructuring the STARSkate Group program and are now calling it Junior Prep (the focus is to prepare group lesson figure skaters for our Juniors/private intro where skaters have semi private and private lessons). We’ll have more information on this program in the coming months but for now, it will be the first step for skaters who are interested in figure skating but are continuing to develop the fundamentals of skating.

As a reminder for parents of all programs, please dress your skaters appropriately for the ice conditions. It’s going to get cold out there so please ensure that they all have warm mittens and are dressed in layers. In our experience, layers are the best option as ski pants can be quite restrictive (especially for those in our Pre-CanSkate and CanSkate) and it can affect their ability to stand up. If you would ever like to speak with one of your professional coaches, please talk to us before or after your session.

We will be communicating with you via email so please make sure that we have your most recent email address. We will be posting monthly calendars on skateregina.ca to help make sure you’re all up to date with rink/ice changes.

As always, feel free to contact our administrator at 306-586-4898 or at [email protected]

We are so excited to spend the winter with you and your skaters! Together we’re:
