A mother of three, Ana Triaureau came to PEP when her children were 5, 3 and one month old. She was feeling frustrated because she was not getting the cooperation she needed from the older two while she was taking care of an infant. From taking PEP classes, Ana experienced less frustration and was able to speak more calmly to her children. Says Ana: “I am much better able to understand my children, which encourages their cooperation.”

Ana says that one of the benefits from PEP is that her children are now more empathetic. “Because of what

I learned at PEP, I am better at acknowledging how my

children feel, which helps them acknowledge how others feel. It has encouraged them to be much more thoughtful children.”

Ana is currently leading PEP parenting classes

in Spanish as part of PEP’s partnership with Linkages to

Learning to reach low-income Latino parents. Ana says that while PEP offers lots of helpful tips, it’s not a quick fix. “It’s a long process,” she says. “You don’t always get results immediately, but the results are long lasting. With PEP, when you apply the techniques, the results stick.”

2016 marked the beginning of new program fronts for PEP. While we continued all of PEP’s traditional programs, we also took significant steps in exploring and launching new programs, which include:

Serving Low-Income Parents – in Spring 2016, PEP officially launched its new Partnership Program (see page 8). The program brings parenting education to underserved and low-income audiences, working in partnership with organizations that are already serving those populations. We launched the program with our inaugural partner Linkages to Learning, which serves at-risk students in Montgomery County Public Schools. This partnership leverages our mutual strengths – PEP’s strong parenting education curriculum and peer leader model, and Linkages’ local presence and connection with families. We look forward to building on this partnership in the coming year.

Exploring Online Learning – also in 2016, PEP began exploring ways to offer parenting services and resources online. Though still in an R&D phase, we’re excited about the potential for online learning to complement our in-person classes and help us reach new audiences. Stay tuned!

Augmenting Existing Programs – last year we also introduced new features to our existing programs. Building on our 2015 pilot, we held a number of “Dads-only” programs in 2016, including discussion groups and classes. We also held our first Can Do Kids Fair-inspired workshop called Let’s Make Lunch. The workshop helped kids gain confidence and skills around lunch-making, and helped parents learn encouragement strategies to build their children’s capabilities. We are holding more Let’s Make Lunch programs in 2017 and plan to introduce another topic to our Can Do Kids workshop series.

These new ventures and the continuation of our tried and true programs are only possible because of the outstanding dedication and commitment of the entire PEP community: PEP board members, staff, leaders, donors, sponsors, and volunteers. The key to the success of all that we do is you – by sharing your experience, your empathy, your compassion and your support, PEP programs have deep impact on the families that we serve. So join us now in celebration of all we’ve accomplished this past year and in anticipation of all that is to come! Onward!

Last September, Shereece, mother of a six-year-old girl, heard about a PEP workshop being offered at her daughter’s school and decided to attend. She says that she learned techniques from PEP that have helped to create a sense of calm in her family. “When a difficult situation is taking place, I am able to pause in the moment – in real time – and decide on the best way to proceed,” Shereece says. “My daughter notices how I’m working to be respectful in those moments, so she wants to behave the same way.”

But the most important take-away from PEP for Shereece? Shereece says PEP has helped create a new family culture. “In any profession, there is a culture chosen by the company, the employees and the managers. But families don’t always do that. My biggest “aha” from PEP was that our family can meet together and agree on

how we want to treat each other, what our family ideals are and how we want to portray ourselves to others. We have created a covenant for our family that we keep on the counter in our kitchen. It has empowered all of us as a family entity and made us stronger.”

Shereece also gives a lot of credit for her family’s success to her PEP instructor. “She had

been through the same challenging experiences when she was a parent. She walked the walk. She wasn’t just someone who had read a lot of books. She was a peer.”

PEP Highlights

Noted Parenting Author Series with Michael Bradley and Vicki Hoefle

PEP welcomed two authors to its Noted Parenting Author Series in the fall of 2015. Michael Bradley spoke the evening of November 19 about “Loving Your Tweens and Teens Without Losing Your Mind.” Addressing an audience of over 250 parents, he presented “straight-talk” about relating with teens, based on his book Yes, Your Teen is Crazy! Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind. The following morning, Vicki Hoefle, the author of Duct Tape Parenting: A Less is More Approach to Raising Respectful, Responsible and Resilient Kids shared humorous stories and her sage advice with over 200 parents. In spring 2016, Vicki Hoefle partnered again with PEP to present a weekend workshop for 45 parents that was such a success it will be repeated in 2016.

PEP extends a heartfelt thanks to its major sponsors of the Noted Parenting Author Series:

MOM’s Organic Market, PrepMatters, TransDev, Ruppert Companies and

Washington Parent Magazine.

Can Do Kids FairPEP’s 2016 Can Do Kids Fair took place on Saturday, March 12 with 405 attendees. This one-of-a-kind event teaches everyday skills to young children, builds their confidence that they “can do” a lot to help around the house and be part of the family, and demonstrates

to parents techniques they can use to encourage their children at home. To help with the event, 74 youth and 63 adult volunteers worked with children age three to ten to learn new skills and demonstrate the ones they already knew. Activities included bicycle repair, woodworking, painting, cooking and sewing.

PEP thanks MOM’s Organic Market for its sponsorship of the fair.

PEP Scholarship Program PEP offers scholarships to families who need assistance to pay for PEP courses. Based on a family’s need, scholarships are given to cover a percentage of course fees. Christina Lottie, the parent of an eight-year-old, received a scholarship this year. She says, “Parents may think they cannot afford a PEP class, but with a scholarship, they can.” PEP plans to promote the scholarship program so that more parents can participate in PEP classes.

Reaching Underserved FamiliesIn 2016, PEP launched its new Partnerships Program to bring parenting education programs to low-income and under-served populations in the DC region, working with local partners. We were pleased to launch the program with our first partner, the Linkages to Learning Program in Montgomery County. In April and May 2016, we delivered two multi-week classes in Spanish to 17 Latina women at two elementary schools hosted by Linkages to Learning: Washington Grove Elementary School in Gaithersburg and Fox Chapel Elementary School in Germantown.

Said one Latina mother in the program, “I used to speak in commands to my son, like, “Pay attention in school!” and “You have to learn!” Now, since taking the PEP class, I say more calmly, “Think about what you need in your life. And think about the consequences of what you decide. You can decide.” I look at my son with a different face now, when I talk with him. Before, when I yelled, he would look down and mumble “okay.” Now, he looks at my face when he talks. I can see the difference in the way he looks at me. He feels good because he knows he can make a decision. I learned a lot through this program. Thank you – this helped me so much.”

In fiscal year 2017, PEP will add a new school to its sites – Gaithersburg Middle School. Our plan is to expand to several other schools in the next few years.

Outreach to

DadsPEP continued its outreach to dads in 2016 by hosting “Dads, Drafts and Discussion” events at Rock Bottom Brewery in Bethesda. The dads met together for an evening discussing parenting challenges using Calvin and Hobbes comic strips as inspiration in the spring. That program was followed by a dads-only evening

anger management workshop in June.

The parents of two boys ages 9 and 6, David and Genna Drazen have both taken PEP classes, and now David leads classes as well. David says that since he and Genna have been taking PEP classes there has been less fighting in their home. He attributes this to the fact that he better understands his boys’ needs to contribute to the family. He says he is better at getting them involved in the family by giving them a voice in family meetings and giving them more responsibility for tasks such as making their lunches in the morning. When asked what he thinks is most important when taking a PEP class, David

says, “The willingness to change and to be open to trying something new is important. You may lose some free time, but you will gain

a closer relationship with your children and a more equitable family environment. It is definitely worth it.” He says that in

the last class he led, some parents were resistant to the PEP ideas at first. “I told them, ‘Just try it.’ And people found – especially when they did ‘special time’ – that the benefits were huge. By the end of the class, people said the techniques worked for them and they wanted to continue to implement what they had learned.”

The Power of PEP: Our Leaders and VolunteersPEP’s Leaders PEP’s 208 class leaders, assistants and interns are committed to teaching PEP’s positive parenting methods because they work, and they are respectful to both adults and children. To prepare for their time in the classroom, leaders go through an extensive training program and participate in programming throughout the year to hone and develop their skills. Often, parents’ primary contact with PEP is through the leaders in their classes, and that relationship is a strong one as the parents learn and practice PEP’s techniques. The professionalism, dedication and enthusiasm of PEP’s leaders has been the heart and soul of PEP’s parenting education for the past 34 years. Thank you, leaders! PEP’s VolunteersPEP could not offer many of its programs without the support of its volunteers. Parents and young people help to staff the Can Do Kids Fair, Noted Parenting Author Series and other special events. In addition, volunteers donate their time and expertise to help the staff in the office and to support other important PEP projects. Thank you, volunteers!

Last year, the Parent Encouragement Program (PEP)

continued its life-changing work to build strong, harmonious family relationships through parenting education, skills training

and support. We help adults foster the values of mutual respect, shared responsibility, competence and cooperation in young people, preparing them

to make positive contributions to their families, their communities and the world at large. The positive parenting theory and practice that PEP teaches is

internationally well documented by educators, mental health professionals and

child development experts as highly effective.
