This year marks the Dana Point Chamber of Com- merce’s 38th annual race along Dana Point’s pristine coastline. On Thursday, Nov. 26, novice runners will com- pete side-by-side experienced contenders in the 5K and 10K races that see participants of all ages walking and running their way across the finish line. The races’ flat, scenic course takes racers on a coastal tour of the coun- ty’s southernmost port, the famed surf breaks of Doheny State Beach and California’s storied Coast Highway. Over four decades, participants have helped the Turkey Trot raise more than $500,000 for regional nonprofits. The tradition of giving continues this year as a portion of race registration fees benefit Family Assistance Ministries—a San Clemente-based nonprofit providing rental and transportation assistance, financial counseling and medical screenings to aid Orange County residents on the verge of homelessness. Donations can be made now through Thanksgiving Day at turkeytrot.com/charities. Registration for the 5K, 10K and 1-mile Kids’ Gobble Wobble is available at turkeytrot.com. Online registration closes at midnight Monday, Nov. 23. Participants can register up to their Thanksgiving Day race time. Register in person from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25 and starting at 6 a.m. on Turkey Trot morning at the Dana Marina Plaza. On-site race entry fees increase by $10. The plaza is also home to packet pick-ups and a two-day health and wellness expo. Identification is required for packet pick-up. The 10K kicks off festivities at 7 a.m. Participants can recycle their Halloween get-ups and enter the annual costume contest that crowns winners in individual and group categories before the 5K Open start. Early-morning races will see close finishes, but it’s the day’s final event that packs the most excitement—the youngest trotters take their marks at 10:15 a.m. for the 1-mile Kids’ Gobble Wobble. It’s a perfect cap to a morning of cheerful competition before the turkey hits the table. Parking is available Dana Hills High School, located at 33333 Golden Lantern. A free shuttle will run to and from the harbor throughout the morning. So arrive early, warm-up, explore the Health & Wellness Expo, snap a photo with Drumstick and enjoy the 38th annual Dana Point Turkey Trot. For nearly 40 years, thousands of trotters—from the young in age to the young at heart of beginning walkers, casual runners and elite competitors—have gathered in the wee hours of Thanksgiving Day to “Run the race before they stuff their face.”

Like the time-honored customs of giving thanks, parade viewing, pumpkin pie eating, football watching and turkey-induced napping were established, so too has Orange County’s tradition of friendly competition taken root as neighbors, families, friends, volunteers and clubs descend on Dana Point Harbor to race in, cheer on and support participants in the annual Dana Point Turkey Trot.

This year marks the Dana Point Chamber of Com-merce’s 38th annual race along Dana Point’s pristine coastline. On Thursday, Nov. 26, novice runners will com-pete side-by-side experienced contenders in the 5K and 10K races that see participants of all ages walking and running their way across the fi nish line.
