The Early Warning System Summer Success Class will continue. Twenty students who are identified as meeting at-risk indicators of dropping out will be invited to attend. The focus of the program will be to prepare students for the upcoming school year by providing instruction in content and study skills identified as essential for the next grade. There will be minor programming changes in 2015 based on feedback from the first EWS program in 2014. Middle school and high school credit recovery and credit advancement will continue in the format used the past several years. Extended School Year and SB319 will continue as required by law. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

• Grades listed throughout the proposal indicate the grade students will enter in the Fall of 2015. This reflects the method used by DESE required for summer school application and approval.

program effectiveness Additional details:

• Students entering grade 6 (previous 5th grade) will again be enrolled in the middle school Reading Assistance Program as was done in the previous two years.

• A librarian with a para-professional and a school nurse will be on staff. • Senate Bill 319, reading assistance for our struggling students, will again be offered for students

required to attend the summer reading program. Enrollment Process Students completing kindergarten through fourth grade, identified as being in need of additional reading assistance, will be invited to attend the Summer Assistance Program. Additional students will be invited until all available seats are filled. Transportation Transportation will be provided for those requesting this service. effectiveness.

Enrollment Process Those identified as being in need of additional reading assistance will be invited. Available seats in the program will be offered until all seats are filled. Enrollment Process Summer school enrollment meetings with school counselors will occur prior to distribution of enrollment forms or online enrollments. School counselors will assist students in identifying courses for individual summer school enrollment. Enrollment materials will be distributed to local guidance offices and will be placed on the summer school web page. Enrollment will be completed at the middle schools and high schools with support from district personnel as needed. Delaying the first week of the middle school program will assist schools with meeting the needs of their students based on final grades in the middle school. * 30 minutes per day for lunch cannot be counted towards ADA Elementary Summer STEAM Camps (Previously STEM) Elementary Summer STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math) Camp consists of a four (4) day camp utilizing Francis Howell teachers blending the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics.

• New in the summer of 2015, STEAM is the integration of the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math, being taught together.

• The program will continue to be developed by FHSD staff with a focus the 21st Century skills of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.

• Program enrollment increased at elementary level, with the addition of an instructor who will collaborate and integrate the Arts into selected camp activities. Enrollment for the STEAM Camp will increase from 400 to 480 seats.

Middle Summer STEM Camp Middle School STEM Camp consists of a five (5) day camp and is held in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) labs of the three (3) high schools. This is contingent on the ability to fill positions with PLTW certified teachers. This certification is required by PLTW to teach the Gateway to Technology curriculum, PLTW for middle school.

• Modification of grades for each camp suggested, with week 1 consisting of students going into grades 7 and 8. Week 2 would consist of students going into grade 9, allowing the camp to focus on skills leading up to PLTW courses offered at the high schools.

Staffing for the camp will need to begin shortly after Board approval. It is anticipated that professional development for the camp instructors may be needed prior to the camp in July 2015.
