Letter from the DirectorSleep Under the stars!

You have never seen the sky until you have seen it from one of our camps! There is nothing more wonderful or magical.

Welcome to the magical world of summer camp! Camp is a place where you can create memories, make new discoveries, develop lifelong friendships and learn new skills. As the camp director I strive to make camp a place where girls can become the best they can be, learn to care for and protect the environment and feel a part of a community. As counselors and leaders, we strive to empower campers to step outside their comfort zone, take risks and grow as leaders all while still having a lot of fun!

This summer we are opening our camps to more family and troop camping. Not everyone is ready for a full sleep away camp experience. Studies show that kids who spend time in the outdoors with family and friends have better self-esteem and problem solving skills. Both camps will launch the Girls R.U.L.E. program that will focus on campers being Respectful, Understanding, Listening and Empowering to one another. I am also excited about the launch of our Urban Day Camp Adventure. Created for the first time camper, Urban Day camp day-long programs are open to all ages.

Remember Girl Scout camp is open to ALL girls, not just current Girl Scouts. We have something for everyone!

I look forward to seeing everyone at camp this summer!

Happy Camping!

Vanessa “Shoe” GroseCamp Director

The importance of getting outdoors and going to camp

The value of an outdoor experience in a girl’s life is beyond measure. It is a time for creating memories that will last a lifetime, and it has been an important component of the Girl Scout experience since the beginning of the organization. The camp experience provides a setting for girls to stretch their minds and muscles, appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of the world in which they live, exercise leadership and learn a wide variety of new skills. Girls are also challenged as individuals and as groups working towards a common goal.

Tiered PricingWe believe that every girl, regardless of financial circumstances, should have the opportunity to experience camp. While the costs to maintain camp properties and produce camp programming continue to rise, families have differing abilities to meet those costs.

To keep camp affordable for all families, we’ve adopted a voluntary tiered pricing structure. Tiered pricing gives each family the opportunity to choose the pricing option that works best for them. All campers will have the same experience regardless of which price the family can afford.

The tiered pricing breakdown:• Tier A:Partially subsidized price for families that can pay a little more.• Tier B: Heavily subsidized price for families that can’t afford Tier A.• Tier C: Heavily subsidized price for families that can’t afford Tier B.

These rates are subsidized through fundraising, special events, and the hard work of Girl Scouts during the Girl Scout Cookie Sale. Please pay Tier A prices whenever possible so we can continue to provide a top notch camp experience through quality staff, exceptional programs, and well-maintained properties.

Campership ApplicationLimited funds are available for camp sessions. Camperships are for girl campers only. Applications must be submitted with paper registration forms, include all required documentation for consideration, $50 deposit and must be received by noon on May 1, 2015. Submission does not guarantee a campership will be awarded. Camperships are given for up to 90% of the camp fee not to exceed $350 for the summer and is dependent on the established need of the applicant. Applications are considered on a first come first serve basis. All campers must be registered Girl Scouts. Application does not guarantee a spot will be held in your desired camp session. Balances due must be paid by the deadline date in order to guarantee your spot.

Cancellations• Deposits are only refunded if council cancels the session and the council is unable to place the camper in another

session.• Balances will be refunded, minus a $50 administrative fee, if the cancellation is made in writing (email acceptable)

two weeks prior to the sessions begin date. After this date, balances, minus the $50 administrative fee, will only be refunded if the camper moves out of state, has been certified to be ill by a physician or there is a family emergency such as severe sickness or death in the immediate family. Documentation of proof must accompany cancellation notice.

• Balances cannot be transferred to another family, but may be transferred among siblings.• You must notify the camp registrar (505-343-1040) before the session begins if there is a family emergency and

GSNMT must receive written request (email acceptable, [email protected]) of cancellation and proof of emergency within two weeks following the session.

• Refunds are not issued if a camper leaves before the end of the session due to disciplinary action or homesickness.• If a camper leaves camp early due to physcial illness or injury, the camp fees will be prorated, minus the deposit, for

refund.

No-Show PolicyIf cancellation arrangements are not made with GSNMT following the above guidelines and the camper does not arrive for their camp session, the entire camp fee will be retained by GSNMT. If a camper’s fees have not been paid in full and cancellation arrangements are not made following the above guidelines, all payments made are forfeited.

MAKE THIS A SUMMER TO REMEMBER!Whether you are a first time camper or a veteran seeking new adventures, at camp you will find fun, friendship, and adventures to last a lifetime. Girl Scout camp is for all girls and offers a wide variety of options for girls to Discover independency and self-reliance, Connect with others in a team, and Take Action to protect the planet’s natural resource.

Imagine the thrill of riding a horse for the first time, climbing to the top of a rock formation, achieving the perfect tie-dye spiral, or making a new friend sitting around a campfire. Our goal is for all campers to face challenges and celebrate successes when they accomplish something they may never have dreamed possible before they went to camp.

Camp is For Everyone!

Urban Adventure Day Camp, Rancho del Chaparral and Camp Elliott Barker are camps for ALL girls, not just those who are already registered Girl Scouts.

Choose your Adventure!

Day Camp Adventure (New)

Day Camp allows campers to experience the adventure of camp during the day while returning to the comforts of their home at night. Day Camp offers campers fun and exciting activities: trying new things, discovering their leadership abilities and making new friends; all while learning about camp life and nature.

This summer we will be offering two day camps, Urban Adventure Day camp in Albuquerque and Camp Elliott Barker Day Camp.

Resident Camp Adventure

Camp is a progression. Girls as young as 1st grade may be ready for Resident Camp, while others may not. But by the time a girl is in 4th to 5th grade she should be responsible enough for herself, and confident enough to take the step to resident camp alone or with a friend. At camp girls grow in self-confidence, independence and leadership; learn new skills and interest, comradery, and the ability to make good decisions. Camp staff members are involved and available to assist girls when they need help, but are able to step back and let the girls accomplish goals and triumphs for themselves.

Troop Camp Adventure

This is a great camp option for those girls that may not be ready for camp on their own or for troops that want to experience camp together. Troops can come to camp together to participate in the programs like canoeing, ropes courses, archery, horses, campfires and arts and crafts. Leave the programming to us. Want to work on a badge or do a hike? You will have the chance to go off as a troop if you choose as well. The adventure is yours to make……Choose your Troop Camp Adventure!

Family Camp Adventure

Family camp is a time when everyone in the family can come and enjoy the camp experience. Bring your parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends to camp for fun-filled weekends of activities including archery, arts & crafts, singing around the camp fire and horseback riding.

Rancho del Chaparral Leadership ProgramsWant to work at camp some day? Our Leadership programs will get you started on the right path. As you progress through the leadership pathway, you will learn and experience a variety of camp programs and activities, including planning and implementation. Learn about leadership, teamwork, and child development. Help in units and program areas. Spend time at both Rancho and Barker. Help create a positive community at camp. Participate in a “pre-camp” just as our staff does, to better prepare you for your new leadership role. These Leadership opportunities offer valuable skills and experience for girls, many of which will help prepare you for life after high school. Upon completion participants will be awarded their CIT Pins! Note: CIT’s will return home between sessions, unless there is a weekend program and then they have the option to stay and help.

Additional application required.

Counselor In Training I Grades 9-10 This is the first step on the journey to becoming a camp counselor. Start your first week with the same training our camp counselors go through - learn child development, program planning and how to be a good mentor to young girls. During the second week, you will have the chance to assist counselors in a unit, singing songs, and playing games. You will even have a chance to assist in the program area of your choice.

You will continue to work directly with campers as you learn about supervision, group management, and program planning experience. You will also gain insight into the responsibilities of managing a safe and successful camp community. Plan an “all camp” activity or campfire. Leave your legacy with a camp service project.

Rancho del Chapparal Family Troop & Family Camps are great opportunities to spend the weekend at Rancho. This summer we are making it easy! All you need to do is sign up for one of our weekend camp sessions, and our camp staff will take care of the programming. Maybe you want to do some horseback riding, or hiking. The choice is yours. You will even have a chance to work on a badge or journey.

Adults are responsible for participating with and supervising girls. But don’t worry we offer a variety of activities that are led by camp staff. You may choose the scheduled activities or do something just as a troop/family, such as badge or journey work. The choice is yours.

What a great way to introduce the girls to the wonders of the outdoors and Girl Scout Camp!

CAMP FAQ’SWho Are the Camp Staff? Our camp staff members are mature, responsible individuals selected for their special abilities, certifications, professionalism, and experience working with youth camping programs. All of our staff are interviewed and screened. Background checks are conducted on all staff members. All staff participates in an intensive pre-camp training and ongoing trainings throughout the summer on topics such as child and adolescent development, camp skills, Girl Scout programs, healthcare, first aid and CPR training, and safety practices and procedures. Staff are mostly college students or recent college graduates and come from all parts of the country and world. We pride ourselves on giving the campers a look into all types of experiences; a well-rounded staff gives them this learning experience.

Health & SafetyYour camper’s health and safety is our first priority. All camp programs are planned and staffed according to the high standards of Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camping Association. Healthcare mangers direct the health centers at each camp and are supported by on-call services of a local physician and emergency medical center. If a camper is on medication, the healthcare manager will administer and document it. Staff and girls must turn in all medication (in their original container) to the healthcare manager upon arrival at camp.

Health histories are required for all camp programs. Some programs may require an additional parent permission waiver, which will be provided in the camper confirmation packet prior to camp arrival. So that we can provide the best possible experience for your camper, please note any special needs, disabilities or dietary restrictions on the campers registration form under “special needs” so we may accommodate for appropriate staffing and camper needs.

Parents/Guardians will be contacted by phone if sickness or injury requires a visit to a doctor. Parents/Guardians will also be contacted for any other issue, such as severe homesickness, injury, or illness that prevents your camper from taking part in camp program activities.

Meals, Allergies, Food & Special RequirementsBoth camps provide well-balanced meals prepared by experienced kitchen staff and served in the dining facility. Menus are planned based on summer food service program guidelines (the same guidelines used in most school cafeterias). Meals are normally served “family style” and girls will participate in setup before meals and cleanup after meals.

It is very important that we are aware of any special dietary needs, requirements or allergies BEFORE your child arrives at camp. Please list any severe allergies on your registration form. This will not affect your camper’s placement but will help best serve your camper’s specific needs. If your camper requires specialized foods please contact the Camp Director to discuss the best way to accommodate your camper’s dietary needs.

Visitors, Mail & Phone CallsFor safety reasons, access to Girl Scout camp properties is limited when camp is in session. Parents can leave mail at the check-in for delivery during the session to eliminate concerns over the timeliness of postal deliveries. In the event of a home emergency or change in pick-up plans, please call the Camp Director or the Camp Registrar; they will make sure the Camp Director is notified.

Camp LivingHousing assignments are made based on program, level, and availability. There are a variety of different housing options depending on which camp your camper is attending. Living units range from 4-8 beds depending on the housing.

Electronics FreeCamp is all about friends! Camp allows girls to take a deep breath and unplug from electronics. Cell phones are not allowed at camp. Girls need to be able to be away without having to call home. It has been our experience that calling home tends to make campers more homesick and is disruptive to other campers. The Camp Director will contact parents or guardians if problems arise.

Camper ConfirmationCamper confirmation will be sent via email. Your final payment confirmation will serve as your “ticket” to camp. You must present this confirmation upon check-in. In this confirmation, you will also receive a link to the additional forms needed for your check in at camp.
