We are who we are. In 1965 Dr. Bob Smith invented and sold the world’s first thermal goggle lens out of the back of his van. He was a free-thinking visionary with a lust for life. In 1979 we introduced our first line of sunglasses for people who lived life outside walls, “Do it your way…but see it our way.” Even then the idea was to provide superior quality sunglasses to make your experience outside better. That was it. This has always been about making product for people like Bob Smith.

So we celebrate our history by re-introducing sunglasses from our past. The Archive Collection pieces are exact remakes of original Smith frames from over the past 36 years. Each piece is labeled with its original year and offered in original colorways.

After 50 years we still have a lust for life. And why wouldn’t we? It’s easy to make great product when you love what you do.

The Questa is pulled directly from our 1990 Moto’s Series. The distinct retro-pattern etched into the metal of the nose, wire-core temple, and round eye wire speak to Smith’s history when glasses were designed a block off Main Street in downtown Ketchum, Idaho, and ski lifts were seconds away.

The clean corners and traditionally shaped temple of the Tioga is a classic cool for outdoor lovers, same as it was when originally released in 1993. Created at a time within Smith where the designers were also the catalog models, the engineers came in late on powder days, and we just walked out the backdoor to get extreme, the Tioga is still perfect for life beyond office walls.

Buried in the vaults of our sunglass archive for decades, this iconic circular frame has a distinctive round shape and vintage curves. Drawing from all the elements expected of traditional design—simplicity, quality and craftsmanship, the Marvine is an authentic blast from our historic past. Proudly paying homage to generations of free-spirited, creative, and thoughtful intellectuals.

The large round shape, keyway nose, and subtly horned lug detailing are iconic elements of an archetypal outdoors sunglass, the Mt. Shasta. The only thing not exactly the same as the original are the crystal clear optics provided by our Carbonic TLT lenses. This style speaks to the golden days establishing climbs in Yosemite, while providing new inspiration for adventures yet to come.

The thin temples and rounded cat-eye brow of the Cheetah were first seen in 1988 and had a long run as the signature Smith women’s frame. Offered in many of the original frame colors, the lenses have been updated to feature our crystal clear, Carbonic TLT lenses. The re-release of the Cheetah is meant to capture that same balance of getting outdoors but doing it with style.

The square eye wire and straight temples of the Delano still possess the subtle cool they had when first released in 1993; the frame design has proven timeless. Surprising to find that the thin, retro-temples and oversized, square eye wire of the Cornice were not designed today, but nearly a quarter century earlier, in 1991.
