Welcome to Garsington Opera’s 2015 season

When Leonard Ingrams founded Garsington Opera in 1989 he began with just two performances of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. This year we present four productions over six weeks which I hope continue to embody Leonard’s vision of artistic excellence in a setting of extraordinary beauty.

In our 26th season, the work of one of Garsington Opera’s most treasured composers, Richard Strauss, returns with the exquisite, yet rarely performed, Intermezzo. Acclaimed Straussian conductor Jac van Steen makes his first appearance with us and Bruno Ravella, who worked alongside director John Cox on our 2014 Fidelio, directs.

We revisit the Festival’s essential Mozartian thread with a new production of Così fan tutte, which I will conduct, and look forward to welcoming John Fulljames, who makes his Garsington Opera directorial debut.

Later in the season we present our first production of Death in Venice, one of the great 20th-century operas. I am delighted to welcome back both Steuart Bedford, very much a member of the Garsington Opera family, who conducted the opera’s world premiere at Snape Maltings in 1973, and Paul Curran, who directed Mozart’s La finta giardiniera for us in 2003.

2015 also sees our first partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company with four performances of an abridged version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Mendelssohn’s richly evocative incidental music.

Throughout the season we will be championing some of the UK’s most exciting young singers, who will perform alongside artists with established international careers, which is at the very heart of our ethos.

I hope you will find much to enjoy in our 2015 season and I look forward to welcoming you to Wormsley.

A light-hearted wager spirals out of control when two young soldiers allow themselves to be drawn into the intrigues of their cynical friend who persuades them to put the love of their

adored fiancées to the test. Playing with the girls’ emotions is a dangerous experiment in which nobody is left unchanged.

The third of Mozart’s collaborations with his greatest librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte, Così fan tutte is a bitter-sweet comedy in which real people face real and painful predicaments. It drew from Mozart some of his most captivating music, revealing every nuance of character, every shade of humour, passion and humanity; dealing intimately with the ambiguities, perplexities and joys of life.

Artistic Director Douglas Boyd conducts and John Fulljames, Associate Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House, directs.

Richard Strauss and his wife Pauline had a volatile, combative relationship. He was perceived by some to be cold and reserved; she was easily roused to anger and prone to irrational jealousy.

Despite everything he was genuinely devoted to her, and she to him.

All these contradictions are rendered in great detail in Intermezzo, in which Richard and Pauline appear, thinly disguised, as Robert and Christine Storch. While in Vienna on a conducting tour Robert is interrupted by the arrival of a telegram from Christine accusing him of an affair, having drawn entirely the wrong conclusions from a letter she has opened in error. He eventually unravels the trail of misunderstandings and husband and wife are lovingly reconciled.

Strauss makes a welcome return to Garsington Opera after an eight-year absence with music exquisitely crafted to portray marriage in all its complexity, illuminated by flashes of high comedy.

Jac van Steen conducts, Bruno Ravella directs and Giles Cadle, whose work includes Olivier Award-winning set designs for Nicholas Hytner’s production of His Dark Materials at the National Theatre, joins the creative team as designer.

Languid, mysterious Venice holds an eternal fascination for ailing writer Gustav von Aschenbach. Coming to the city to recuperate and in the hopes of finding creative inspiration, he becomes

obsessed with a young boy, Tadzio. He never speaks to him but the boy comes to represent a youth that can never again be his. Aschenbach’s initially detached, aesthetic, interest becomes all-consuming at the same time as a cholera epidemic rages through Venice.

Benjamin Britten’s last opera, based on the novella by Thomas Mann, was first performed at Snape Maltings, near Aldeburgh in Suffolk, on 16 June 1973. Conducting that premiere performance was Steuart Bedford who now, more than 40 years later, will conduct the opera again for Garsington Opera.

Music of intensity and restraint, of luminous, shimmering colour, conjures up an image of a man coming to the end of his life drawn to a boy glowing with health and youthful self-absorption. Britten’s sensuous, exotic score is filled with dazzling melodic invention, offering a unique insight into the human condition.

Paul Curran, former Artistic Director of the Norwegian National Opera, will direct, joined by designer Kevin Knight with whom he frequently collaborates.

M endelssohn was only 17 years old when he wrote an overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, having read Shakespeare’s play in a German translation. It is a richly illustrative and

imaginative work, packed with musical effects to evoke the rustle of leaves in the breeze, the darting movements of Queen Mab and her fairy crew and the braying of an ass. 16 years later, in 1842, Mendelssohn returned to the subject, composing incidental music for the play, to a commission from King Frederick IV of Prussia.

Garsington Opera’s Artistic Director, Douglas Boyd, collaborates with Gregory Doran, Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, on a venture involving artists from both companies. Mendelssohn’s shimmeringly beautiful and evocative music will bring fresh illumination to Shakespeare’s brilliantly intertwined, triple-layered dream-world, where lovers, fairies and rude mechanicals confuse and pursue one another in a wood near Athens.
