Welcome Message: Broward County Crime Commission School Resource Officer (SRO) Awards Breakfast - Tuesday, December 15th, 2015 The Broward County Crime Commission welcomes you to the 2015 School Resource Officer (SRO) Awards Breakfast! Annually, the Crime Commission finds it necessary to recognize top-flight officers who competently serve and protect the school grounds in which many of our children attend. This is a calling of great importance, which involves many “moving parts” (literally) on a daily basis. The critical thinking associated with this role goes well beyond simply responding to potential incidents of active shooters, terrorism, child predators, and narcotics dealers. Most, if not all here today, are being lauded because of the extra initiative taken, of going above and beyond the call of duty; anticipating and predicting potential dangerous events, in order to prevent such acts from materializing! This is greatly appreciated and needs to be noted! Perhaps a greater calling is the direct and indirect daily mentoring School Resource Officers exhibit to students. SRO’s have a unique opportunity to not only protect children’s lives, but also touch their hearts. When essential, SRO’s are able to render Common Sense tutelage and Street Smart wisdom, without the child having to suffer through the School of Hard Knocks. How vital and important is this? Well, if the mentoring only resonates with a handful of kids, this group of children can now become ambassadors and role models, to prevent other children from going down the wrong path [and so - on, and so - on, and so – on]. Suddenly, multitudes of children’s lives are transformed, all because of an SRO who cared and displayed exemplary leadership. Therefore, today, December 15th, 2015, the Broward County Crime Commission pays homage in recognizing a fine host of deserving individuals: 9 Community Difference Makers, a Community Game Changer, a 33 Year Veteran & SRO Pioneer, and 23 Superlative School Resource Officers. Finally, in closing, two time Super Bowl Champion and College Football National Champion Head Football Coach, Jimmy Johnson, formerly of the University of Miami (UM), once eloquently said: “Treat a person as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a person as if he were, where he could be and should be, and he will become what he could be and should be”. This is certainly a testament to every leader, administrator, principal, teacher, criminal justice representative, police officer and public servant, which includes everyone in this room! Hence, we applaud you as well!! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU! James DePelisi, President Broward County Crime Commission

2015 Broward County Crime Commission Charles Bingham School Resource Officer

(SRO) Pioneer Award

Lt. Charles “Charlie” Bingham was a longtime supervisor of the School Resource Officer (SRO) program while with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO). During his illustrious 31 year career at BSO, Lt. Bingham championed the SRO program, strongly emphasized community policing, and was very conscientious of public service to the community. In February 2001, Northwest 49 Avenue in Lauderhill was renamed Charles Bingham Avenue. Sun Sentinel Excerpt - May 10, 2000|By TANYA WEINBERG Staff Writer: In the 1970s, when many patrol officers were rolling up their car windows to enjoy their air conditioning, Sgt. Bingham kept his wide open, got out of his car and walked the neighborhoods, said former Attorney General Bob Butterworth. "Maybe a lot of us should've been watching Charlie more closely," said Butterworth, who was Broward's sheriff from 1978 to 1982. "The way he was policing is how the experts have now found out is the best way to do it." When it came to community involvement, especially with youth, colleagues agree that Sgt. Bingham was pioneering throughout his career. "He helped make the Broward Sheriff's Office into the fine office it is now," Butterworth said. The Charles Bingham School Resource Officer (SRO) Pioneer Award is given to Criminal Justice representatives who understand the importance and role of the Broward County Crime Commission, and have held a steadfast commitment and line of success as a School Resource Officer (SRO) representative and/or working directly with SRO’s. Today, Tuesday, December 15th, 2015, it is the Broward County Crime Commission’s privilege to award the Charles Bingham School Resource Officer (SRO) Pioneer Award to Major Edna “Angie” Pollock, Broward District Schools Police Department. About Major Angie Pollock: Major Pollock, has served the Broward Schools District Police Department for the past 23 years, and started her career 33 years ago as a Deputy with the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Becoming a School Resource Officer (SRO) in 1987, she was one of the first participants and catalysts during the early inception of the SRO program county wide. Through the years, Major Pollock has served as a beacon of public service in describing what a true pioneer entails, in any field. She has been a role model, a shoulder to lean on, a stellar Detective, a commensurate public servant, and most importantly a leader.

Over the years, she has consistently volunteered her time with youth, athletic, and various church programs, in an effort to mentor children, and work with local leaders to improve the community. Major Pollock earned an Associate Degree from Miami Dade College and attended the University of South Florida and Barry University, studying Criminal Justice and Political Science.
