It is an honorand privilegeto welcomeyou to SCHBand the Fallmeeting in

Boston. Please join us in what promises to bean outstanding

set of meetings organized by ourDivision. My colleagues have workedtirelessly to bring you excellentsymposia, seminars, networkingevents, and other programs. The breadth, depth, and sophisticationof the talent and creativity of our

members are outstanding. We haveeminent researchers and professionalsfrom all sub disciplines of chemistrywho represent the triad of academia, government, and industry. We enjoya cherished and hallowed tradition ofexcellence. The warmth and gracioushospitality with which we welcome participation by our members, collaborators, and distinguished guestshas been the hallmark of our tradition

and the well-spring of our progress.

We are embarking on several new projects, and have forged a pathfor a new Strategic Vision 2015.Our projects are well conceived, meticulously researched, anddesigned to reach out to broadsections of the chemistry enterprise, innovation, and entrepreneurshipthat SCHB is drawn towards. I draw

particular attention to our goal offostering new long-term relationships

between participants from different professional organizations, and acrossnational boundaries. As technologycreates netizens out of citizens, asnations move from ‘independence’to ‘interdependence’, as national boundaries become notional, andas the concept of global citizenshipgets evolved, SCHB and its like-minded individuals will contributeto the fullest. Volunteers like youare a tremendous source of ideasthat constitute the lifeblood of anorganization. Join a committee ofyour choice, provide creative inputsinto the programs, and assist us inincreasing the public’s awarenessand enjoyment of Chemistry.

We will gain refreshingly newinsights and perspectives from thecollective wisdom of the assemblednetwork of SCHB executives. Our teamwork will offer people avision, perchance to dream, and themotivation to explore new vistas andventures. SCHB stands ready to bringabout a sea change in mentorship, and establish small businesses to benet the “young and old and shyand bold” spanning geographic, national, and cultural boundaries. I look forward to future professionalinteractions with admiration andenthusiasm. And of course humor…the possibilities are intriguing!

    Kindest regards and best wishes,

    SMALL CHEMICAL BUSINESSES

    AND CORPORATE ASSOCIATESNeal Langerman

    With more than 161,000 mem-

     bers, the American Chemical

    Society (ACS) is the world’s

    largest scientic society and

    one of the world’s leading

sources of authoritative scien-tic information; more than half

of its members are employed by

    chemical companies and allied

    industries. The ACS Board of

    Directors created the Commit-

    tee on Corporation Associates

(“CA”) in 1952, as the formal

    link between the Society and

the chemical enterprise. Morethan 30 companies actively

    support the profession and

    science of chemistry, and have

    a direct voice for corporate

    discussion with the ACS,

    through participation in CA.

Companies of all sizes can ben-

    et from membership in CA.

    For the employers of members

    of SCHB, association with CA

    will provide many valuable

     business opportunities. Among

    these are:

    • Opportunities to identify

focus areas and speakersfor briengs on Capitol

    Hill on topics of interest

    to legislators and industry

    • The ability to participate in

    the writing and review process

    for ACS Policy Statements,

    which are used by legislators

    and congressional staffers

to help enable informed dis-cussion of chemistry-related

    topics

    • Privileged access to market

    information, technical trends,

    manufacturing patterns, and

    market opportunities

    • Specialty presentations fea-

CA is structured to foster in-

     put by member companies of

all sizes. Annual dues are only

$500 to join plus $2 per chem-

ist. The Committee meets twiceannually (during ACS National

    Meetings), with members able

    to participate by teleconfer-

    ence, if desired. In addition,

    there are several subcommittees

    focused on high-priority topics

    identied through member

    company input; subcommittee

discussions are generally held by teleconference, and are open

to all CA representatives in or-

    der to maximize participation

     by, and comment from, inter-

    ested member companies.

    My company, Advanced Chem-

ical Safety, has been a memberof CA for about 10 years. Dur-

ing that period, we have gained

    contacts in the chemical indus-

    try, learned valuable lessons

    related to process safety man-

    agement, and participated in a

    variety of public policy outreach

    efforts related to the chemical

enterprise. The small annualdues and time commitment

has had a rich return on the in-

    vestment.

As a member of SCHB and CA,

I invite you to consider joining

    CA and including CA activity

on your agenda for each ACS National Meeting. More infor-
