    Local resident Jim Reinders got the ideain 1982 when his amily gathered at theamily arm afer his ather died. Teydecided to build a tribute to his atherand gathered five years later to begin.

    Carhenge is built rom 38 cars, paintedgray. Some are hal-buried, others arewelded together, and some jut rom theground at odd angles mimicking thepresent semi-ruined configuration oStonehenge.

    In recent years, more automobilesculptures have been added. Just a shortwalk rom Carhenge un, quirky piecesinclude Spawning Salmon (a car thatlooks like giant salmon bursting rom theground); and Te Fourd Seasons (rep-resenting the our stages o wheat grownin the area). Admission to the grounds isree, and theres a small visitor center andgif shop where you can smash a penny oryour own Carhenge souvenir.

    Back in town, displays at the19,000-square-oot Knight Museumand Sandhills Centerspan many aspectso western lie, including an extensivedisplay o Native American artiacts, rail-road memorabilia rom the 1880s to thepresent, military history rom the cavalryera to Alliances World War II air base,homestead and ranch lie, and the arrayo ethnic cultures that shaped thearea.

    Dobbys Frontier own, 320 E. 25thSt., is a historic village with buildings

    rom the 1890s through Prohibition. Allare filled with period urnishings. Build-ings include a general store and meatmarket, a mortuary (complete with aglass-topped coffin), a log cabin builtby the areas first black homesteader, anearly gas station, a replica 1880s postoffice, a Chinese laundry, a saloon, a

    The Central Park Fountain in Alliance has provided relief from hot Sandhills summers since 1935. It was renovated in 2007 and is on the National
