sponsored in 2015(Bihar, India& Sri Lanka)

The Al-Qaim Sponsor Our Seniors (SOS) Program was launched in the name of Imam-e-Zamaana (as). His title, Al-Qaim reminds us of our duty to rise and give hope to those living in despair. The SOS Program provides seniors living in abject poverty with a monthly income supplement to help meet their expenses, giving them the opportunity to age gracefully.

Today, a senior is wondering where his/her next meal is going to come from. Another elder is forced to choose between food and medication because of lack of funds. These are the kinds of everyday problems many of our elders are facing. Often times, these seniors have no family to turn to for help and end up suffering in silence, alone and without hope.

IN 2015, WE SPONSORED105 SENIORSIN BIHAR, INDIA &53 SENIORS IN SRI LANKA

Maryam is an elderly mother who is confined to a wheelchair after she lost a leg in an elephant attack. Her husband is retired and earns a meagre income by working odd jobs. Since the attack, Maryam requires medication on a monthly basis. Her additional expenses include transportation to and from the doctor. The monthly support she receives from the SOS program is spent on her treatment.

The Ali Asghar Water Appeal (AAWA) provides struggling families with easy access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities in developing countries. Donations to the AAWA are spent on new construction and restoration of water wells and lavatories. Access to safe clean water and adequate sanitation facilities is a basic human right. Yet the lack of these two necessities is widespread for so many people living in poverty.Countless cases of diseases and deathscould have been prevented if only they had an alternative option to toxic water.

  • EID AL HAJJ QURBANI APPEAL

    490Eid al Hajj qurbanis

    arranged in Kenya & Tanzania

Each year in the Islamic month of Zilhajj, Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al Hajj, a religioius holiday also know as the Festival of Sacrifice. Eid al Hajj honors the willingness of Prophet Abraham (as) to sacrifice his son, Ishmael (as), as an act of submission to Gods command. At the time of the great sacrifice, God intervened to provide Abraham with a lamb to sacrifice instread. Qurbani (the sacrifice of a livestock animal), has since been a key ritual in the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah.

In keeping with the annual ritual of Qurbani, The World Federation facilitates the slaughtering of goats (qurbani) where the meat is then distributed among the poor and needy including widows, seniors, orphans and the disabled.

In 2015, 1,014,836 refugees fled to Europe on unseaworthy boats across the Mediterranean Sea. Over half of these refugees were from Syria fleeing war, violence and persecution. The World Federation led two humanitarian trips to Greece to assist the refugees.

TRIP 1In October 2015, The World Federation and The Council of European Jamaats (CoEJ) led a 7-day trip with 10 volunteers to Lesvos, Greece. Volunteers worked 24/7 on the frontlines to coordinate and distribute aid and support to refugees as they arrived by boat. Aid items including biodegradable toilet solutions, water purification tablets, high energy biscuits and sleeping bags were distributed.

TRIP 2In December 2015, The World Federation joined CoEJ, Imamia Medics International, Islamic Centre of England, The Imam Hussein Foundation and Majlis Ulema Europe under the banner Zainabiyya Alliance for Refugees (ZAR) to lead a second trip to Greece where ZAR volunteers helped coordinate aid and food distribution, transportation and shelter.

To help address the urgent sanitation need for the incoming refugees, our volunteers implemented Peepoople toilets which are portable using biodegradable bags and so could easily be collected and disposed of and would eventually breakdown into compost. A demonstration was provided to the refugees on how to use the bags and dispose of them. This was our response to creating a sustinable solution to the sanitation problem at hand. • 8Across Kenya, scores of children drop out of school or do not attend regularly simply because of poor nutrition and calorie deficiencies that affect their ability to learn. The Fill My Cup Appeal is a daily in-school breakfast program that has been providing a hot cup of nutritional porridge breakfast to children across 29 schools in Kenya since 2011. By providing breakfast each morning, children are motivated to go to school. We have seen that regular meals results in regular attendance which then results in improvements in their academic grades. Filling their tummies with healthy food allows them to learn better.

TESTIMONIALSWe received a message on Facebook that read: I heard you distribute food parcels in Ramadhan. I know a disabled half-blind lady who has no income. Would she qualify to receive a parcel? After inquiring we found out that the person who sent us the message was a 9 year old boy and the lady was his mother. We gifted them a food basket. (BOSNIA)

We distributed 2,000 items of clothings to orphans in Iraq. One orphan said: Its not the cost of the gift that touches us, its the message from donors that show us that somebody out here is thinking about us and cares for us. (IRAQ)

Fatima is doing her apprenticeship in Gaza. Prior to her work placement, she and 16 other refugee women successfully completed a 6 month training program in food processing. The World Federation sponsored this program to assist the most vulnerable. (PALESTINE)

During the food distribution, we discovered villageers who were fasting but could not afford the basic staple food for iftaar and sehri. Thus, they resorted to boiling leaves for their meals. These leaves are not meant to be eaten. we provided these families iwth food rations for th month of Ramadhan. (TANZANIA)

    YEMEN RELIEF

    456men, women &

    children evacuated from Yemen and

    brought to Djibouti

In March 2015, The World Federation responded to a distress call from its regional member in Aden in the Republic of Yemen to evacuate community members immediately. The conflict in Yemen escalated considerably and became unbearable to the point where these individuals suffered from direct threats, injuries, killings, bombings and had their human rights completely violated simply because of their faith and identity.

ETHNIC PERSECUTION:ONE MANS STORY ENDS IN TRAGEDYAbbas Shabbir was targeted by armed insurgents in Yemen because he was Shia. They marked his house with the letter R denoting rafidhi (derogatory term used to classify Shias as infidels). On 16 January 2015, when returning from work, his car was attacked by insurgents who managed to plant a bomb during the hit. Moments later, his car blew up. Abbas was able to get out even after sustaining heavy injuries. He passed away alone in a local street in his neighbourhood and sadly no witnesses stopped to help him.

As migrant families waited to be resettled in new countries, 3 weddings and 2 births took place at The World Federation camp in Djibouti between April and December 2015.

In addition, the treatment of serious medical cases including 2 cancer patients and 1 patient who required a hip replacement operation were arranged by flying these individuals to India to receive the urgent care they needed.

  • 15

The World Federations Yemen Emergency Appeal provided emergency assistance to community members who were victims of Yemens war zone. A 3-phase plan was charted and actioned to address the short, medium and long-term needs of these individuals and families.

PHASE 1: YEMEN RESCUE OPERATIONSTwo rescue operations were successfully carried out in April and May 2015 where a total of 108 families (456 men, women and children) were evacuated and rescued by boat from Yemen and brought to Djibouti for safety. The boats were equipped with life jackets, food, medicine and volunteers.

PHASE 2: INTERIM STAY IN DJIBOUTIUpon their arrival in Djibouti, the UNHCR granted these familites prima facie refugee status. The World Federation then carried out a detailed interview with each famly to document their circumstances and to plan next steps.

Whilst in Djibouti the families were cared for by The World Federation and its team of volunteers. Food, accommodation and medical care were provided for all 456 individuals. Unable to go back to Yemen, these individuals remained strong and united as they awaited news of future resettlement options.

PHASE 3: LONG-TERM RESETTLEMENTOver the last several months, The World Federation has been working with various individuals and sovereign governments across the world to permanently resettle the families in safer countries. We are pleased to report that each of the individuals under our care have been allocated a destination country in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. 290 individuals have alreay left for their new homelands, 116 people will leave by the end of January 2016 and 50 people are awaiting further paperwork.
