2017 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 3

Our School Vision

At the start of 2017 our school vision was:

“St. Brigid’s is a Catholic community where children know they are valued and experience the love of God in an engaging and contemporary learning environment.”

After our significant work during the Renewal and Review process and after much consultation with stakeholders, we have changed it to:

“Every Student Achieves Success in an Authentic Catholic Context.”

School Overview

St Brigid’s Primary School is a Catholic Primary School located 40 kilometres from Melbourne between Berwick and Pakenham. This is our eighth year and we have an enrolment of 269 students.

Inspired by the life of St Brigid we strive to be a school where God’s love is experienced, shared and celebrated. From the Enhancing Catholic School Identity survey we have a focus to continue to equip our students to develop a symbolic verses literal and to help students gain confidence in their Catholic identity. We believe that developing caring and nurturing relationships is at the centre of all we do.

Our Motto ‘Knowledge, Strength, Faith and Hospitality’, articulates what it means to be part of our school community. This year these were incorporated into our Positive Schools Approach as part of our whole school expectations for all members of our community.

We have expansive grounds for students to learn and play on. This includes a grassed oval, Netball/basketball court, multipurpose room, Chapel, running track, Junior and Senior Adventure playgrounds, a large vegetable garden which supports our Science and Sustainability Curriculum along with wide open spaces.

There is a Library that is bright and colourful and stocked with books and resources for our students and staff. The multipurpose room and Chapel have a variety of purposes including, assemblies, Physical Education, Perceptual Motor Program (PMP), Meetings, Playgroup, school Masses, Liturgies, and Before and After School Care.

St Brigid’s offers a comprehensive specialist program of Music, Physical Education, Science and Sustainability and Japanese. Our Foundation students have extra physical learning opportunities through Perceptual Motor Program and all students enjoy rich inquiry-based learning. Student welfare is a high priority and we have a Student Counsellor.

St Brigid’s is an inclusive community that promotes the understanding that wellbeing is central to learning.

Principal’s Report

The 2017 school year has been a time of reflection and growth. It has been a School Review year where we reflect on our strengths, challenges and what we need to focus on in the future. From this time of review and reflection we have developed our Strategic Plan for 2018 -2021.

In 2017 St Brigid’s continued our strong focus on learning and teaching and improving student outcomes. Staff worked collaboratively in a co-teaching environment where we continually strive to deepen our knowledge, skills and understandings of teaching pedagogy and a shared commitment to improving student outcomes.

We have consolidated key elements of personalized learning assessment and data collection to enable differentiation of the curriculum to meet the individual needs of each of our students.

A significant focus for 2017 was the implementation, development and use of the Victorian Curriculum and the new Religious Education Curriculum ‘To Live in Christ Jesus.’ There has been continued development of our Learning Entitlement Plan.

St Brigid’s has a strong relationship with St Michael’s Parish and our students have participated in the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation in a Parish based, family centred and school supported program. I would like to acknowledge the work of our Parish Priest, Father Jeff Kleynjans, Assistant Priest Father Hilarion Fernando, our Pastoral Worker Mrs. Liz Overdyk and our Sacramental Coordinator Tara Bau.

At St Brigid’s we seek ways to involve parents in their child’s education and communicate regularly with them. We are committed to the challenge of being a welcoming, innovative, creative and dynamic learning community.

School Advisory Committee Report

The St. Brigid’s School Advisory Committee has continued to try to make our school a safer, happier place for our children. Having been on the school board for the last two years, I have had the opportunity to be involved in suggestions and changes that benefit all of our children.

Some fantastic changes have occurred over the last year:

Camp for Year 3 students has been brought in as well as a change of venue for the senior camp.

Shade Sails are now over the senior playground.

School renovations - air conditioners, fresh paint and changes to the garden with lots of new plants and a Japanese garden.

ICT updates to the junior area.

Helping to build a culture of Child Safety.

And, as always, continuing to make our carpark safer.

Being able to be involved in our Advisory Committee has been a great way of seeing the many changes we can all make to our school with just a bit of help from everyone in our St Brigid's community.

Being on the Advisory Committee has enabled the Committee to be involved and be a part of our school community.

With the help of the social and fundraising committee representative on our school board. The Committee have been able to see the benefits of parents volunteering to help fund school renovations, gifts for the prep parents, sausage sizzle lunches for St Brigid's Day, and mother's and father's day stalls and special events.

The Advisory Committee members have worked together really well this year to discuss and make changes to help our school.

Having parents, teachers and our principal work together on the Advisory Committee has made a big difference to our children at St Brigid's.

I feel very lucky to have been part of the school board and look forward to another year ahead.

Here at St Brigid's we have a wonderful community of parents, teachers and children. The Advisory Committee is here to make sure we are all improving the school for our children to make it a happy, healthy place.

Thank you.

Catholic Identity and Religious Education

Goal St Brigid’s is a faith filled community where our children come to know God.

Intended Outcomes

1. The Revised Diocese of Sale Religious Education Curriculum is trialled and implemented by all teachers in the school

2. Catholic Social Teaching underpins the core mission of St. Brigid 3. Teachers participate in the School Review to establish a School Improvement Plan for the next

four years.

Achievements

. This year was a time of reflection as the school participated in a Renewal process. The Catholic Identity and Religious Education Team engaged in a process where we reviewed the data generated from the Enhancing Catholic School Identity Surveys. After discussions which involved members of the Catholic Education Office, intended outcomes were generated which centred around the goal to be authentically Catholic in the lived experience of the school. A major focus of 2017 was the implementation of the revised curriculum, To Live in Christ Jesus. In line with its rationale, teachers were challenged to reconsider the delivery of the curriculum that considered the world we live in today with the aim to strengthen a systematic, comprehensive and enriched curriculum. A holistic approach needed to be considered where teachers were challenged to integrate Religious Education across other Key Learning Areas. Engagement with unfamiliar content Strands and Lenses were initially challenging but it is anticipated that full implementation of the curriculum will be completed in 2018.

The faith life of the school continued to be nourished with the support of our Parish, St. Michael’s Berwick.

Our Sacrament Program is family centred, parish based and school supported which deepens our faith.

The Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation are offered to Years 3, Year 4 and Year 6 respectively. St. Brigid’s hosted the Reconciliation Reflection Day in March where we were joined by our sister Parish schools with support from Year 10 students from our feeder college, St. Francis Xavier.

School masses continued to be celebrated three times a Term having moved away from class or level masses in 2016. We were also blessed to have Bishop Patrick O’Regan visit and celebrate a whole school mass with our community. He then spent time with our Year 6 Confirmation Candidates to discuss the significance of the sacrament followed by an informal Q&A session with the Senior Learning Community to share his experience regarding his vocation and faith as well and describing his role in our diocese.

Our Music ministry continues to be a feature of our school. Our Year 5 students participated in the annual Pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sale and led the music in the Choir Loft. St. Brigid's is blessed to have talented musicians on staff who, in turn, encourage and coach our students to share their talents with the community. Students participate in our masses by means of altar serving, playing musical instruments, singing and proclaiming the Word.

Mini Vinnies has been a vehicle for social justice in our school and fundraising efforts for Project Compassion and our local St. Vincent De Paul Conference. Project Compassion raised over $2000 for Caritas which was widely promoted by the Mini Vinnies. In Term 4, the Senior Learning Community participated in an Inquiry to open a Market Day in preparation for Christmas. The Market Day raised approximately $1500 which was donated to the local St. Vincent De Paul Conference. Our second hand uniform sales (coordinated by our Administration Officers) also contributed another $1000 to St. Vincent de Paul.

VALUE ADDED

The School environment has promoted a richer “Catholic Identity”.

Prayer and spirituality of St. Brigid’s community has been nourished thanks to the Liturgical and Sacramental Life of the School.

The Revised Religious Education Curriculum, To Live in Christ Jesus has been trialled and preliminary stages of implementation begun.

The students participated in numerous Liturgies and Masses throughout the year and celebrated a whole school Mass at St Michael’s Church.

The Principal provided weekly contributions to the newsletter reflecting on the Gospel.

Year five students participated in the annual Pilgrimage to St Mary’s Cathedral in Sale led by the music ministry.

Stations of the Cross were presented by students from each Learning Centre.

Classroom programs were linked to the Parish Sacramental process to ensure families were supported.

Learning & Teaching

Goals Contemporary teaching and learning practices are imbedded.

Intended Outcomes

Teachers have a deeper knowledge and implement the Victorian Curriculum as part of their daily practise

That teachers at St. Brigid’s become expert teachers

That learning will be student focused, purposeful and based on data and evidence collected by the teacher

Teachers undertake targeted teaching in their classroom to teach students at their area of need

Achievements

This year saw a time for reflection within St. Brigid’s as we were a school under Review. This provided the opportunity to review and develop practises and processes. This year saw three staff members undertake the Masters of Clinical Teaching offered by the Diocese and these staff members have used the information they have learnt to explain and introduce processes such as Pairwise Comparisons (for rubrics) to the staff with the hope of implementing them in the future.

This year also saw a deliberate focus on the collection of data and evidence of student learning. The use of data analysis continued with the staff with discussions around the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) being used more regularly. This has allowed teachers to develop targeted groups, classes and curriculum for the students. This collection of data has seen levels develop detailed Learning Intentions and Success Criteria when developing units of work, that they target their teaching towards. A key achievement in the area of Inquiry Learning in 2017 was the development of the Learning Entitlement Plan. Once the Learning Progressions for the different learning areas were developed, staff had the opportunity to develop Rich Inquiry Unit ideas with broad curriculum links to different subject matter. Moreover, meeting times were devoted to developing an Assessment Schedule as a part of this document, where discussion was around purposeful assessment being undertaken by the staff and the appropriate time to undertake this.

Literacy has seen some great academic improvement this year. A whole staff focus surrounding comprehension strategies has been undertaken. Emphasis placed on students practising comprehension strategies from Years three to six has seen some improved results in this area, with the aim of continuing to develop the staff professionally in the area in 2018. In Mathematics, St. Brigid’s continued its participation in the CEO sponsored Collective which is a collection of four Diocesan Schools working together. The focus for this year was around teachers developing knowledge about place value. This led to middle leaders attending professional development around effective place value strategies they could use in their classroom. Two staff, with the assistance of the CEO, led a whole staff Professional Development day about place value and strategies that can be applied in the classroom. The Learning Progressions for Mathematics were completed and teachers are beginning to use them in planning. ICT has continued to be implemented in the classroom with Years 3 to 6 participating in the 1-1 Chromebook program and our Foundation to Year 2 students having access to two banks of Ipads. Hapara was implemented as a safeguard for inappropriate behaviour online and Professional Development is being offered to teachers to skill them up in this area. Blogs have continued to be used by all teachers and staff are also using some of the ACMA resources to teach the students about concepts such as online bullying and the effect a person's online presence can have. The Japanese curriculum continued to play a prominent role in the school as we continued to implement ideas from the Leading Languages Professional Learning Program. Many areas of the school have a

ST. BRIGID’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL OFFICER

2017 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 9

Japanese and English title and 5 minute Japanese videos continued to be played in the classroom 3-4 times a week, led by Japanese student leaders, where students have the opportunity to practise using the Japanese language. In 2017 we have continued with the implementation of the specialist area of Science and Sustainability. This included a continued development of the School Garden to include garden beds and chickens. Learning in this area focused on…

the effect weather phenomenon has on its surroundings

the needs of living things, especially plants

ways in which sound and light can be generated and modified

physical responses that can occur when chemicals are mixed together. A highlight of the school work in Sustainability included participating in the Victorian School Garden awards by the VSGA for schools under 280 students. St Brigid’s won the best regional and the best school garden in Victoria. Finally participating in the school review also allowed the opportunity for a clear direction of where the school needed to go in the future. Analysis of data has developed a commitment to a strong focus in the area of Mathematics to improve overall school results, with the development of place value knowledge being the area we will focus on. Emphasis has been placed on recognising student variability in the classroom, as analysis of data led to staff recognising this is an area for improvement. Exploration of this through the 2018 Collective of schools will be valuable.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Year 3 NAPLAN results with 100% of the students reaching the minimum standards in all five of the areas.

Moreover, when comparing the Year 3 cohort against the state and national means, St. Brigid’s mean scores were above the state and national mean scores.

Adding to this, all five areas measured in NAPLAN results have risen over the three year period between 2015-2017 by between 16 and 58 points. This has been consistent growth in each of the five areas assessed in NAPLAN with the exception of Year 3 Mathematics.

As a school we have placed resources and time into the early years literacy, allocating time to having additional levelled texts ready to be read.

Some of the early years teachers have also been a part of the Collectives and assisted with the development of Mathematics planning for the level to use.

Literacy and Numeracy PLT’s have also been successful developing progressions of learning, where common language has been developed.

The Year 5 NAPLAN results also showed great improvement, with all learning areas having 95% of students reaching the minimum standard, with improvements in the area of reading and writing.

The minimum benchmarks saw a drop off in the spelling results, which the school is trying to address by providing professional development for the staff using the Soundwaves program they use in the classroom.

The Year 5 NAPLAN for 2017 saw Reading, Writing and Spelling results above the state standard.

Again, all Year 5 scores have increased in the five areas measured between 2015 and 2017, with a significant improvement in Reading.

Growth in students’ knowledge is comparative or significantly above the State Mean in Mathematics comparing the 2015 Year 3 and 2017 Year 5 results. This is also the case in Spelling and Writing.

School Community & Student Wellbeing

Goals All members of the school community are safe and supported.

Intended Outcomes

Outcomes - To cultivate an inclusive environment where all staff are valued, professional and work collaboratively.

To further develop social and emotional learning to enable students to be confident, resilient, successful lifelong learners.

Relationships are supported within the whole community - students, parents, staff and parish.

Achievements

Their Social and Emotional Learning is an important part of the overall learning of our students. We use the ‘You Can Do It’ program, class meetings, circle time and social groups to help enhance the learning in this area. There are regular newsletter items that inform parents of the learning in the social/emotional area. We also have a subscription to ‘Parenting Ideas’ which we use to share articles with parents around resilience, parenting tips, bullying, cyber-safety and successful learners. In 2017 we also employed a school psychologist / counsellor one day per week to work with children and families who require support for various reasons. In 2017, St Brigid’s introduced the “Whole School approach to positive Behaviour Management”. This provides staff, students and our school community with guidelines, understandings and a consistent approach and school wide practices in student management. Relationships between staff, students, parents, parish and wider community have been a focus too. Events and celebrations like ‘Harmony in Officer’, the Parish Sacramental Program, the fundraising Trivia Night, Catholic Education Week, Grandparent’s Day, Father’s Day breakfast, Mother’s Day celebrations and St. Brigid’s Day all provide opportunities for our school community to come together and celebrate. Each year St Brigid’s seeks to deepen the connection between home and school. Our school Blogs from classroom teachers, Specialist Teachers and the Principal have provided opportunities for our parents to enhance their understandings and knowledge of the school and what is happening in the classroom. The induction of new staff and welcoming graduates were highlights this year. We have a history of welcoming graduate teachers with 6 of our 2017 staff beginning their careers at St Brigid’s. Teachers have planning time together in their teams which allows for collegial discussion, collaborative planning and professional feedback.

Child Safe Standards

Goals All members of the school community are safe and supportive

Intended Outcomes

Members of St Brigid’s School know and understand their responsibilities in relation to child safety.

Practices are followed to ensure safety of children and all members of our community.

Achievements

St. Brigid’s have ensured we have a safe learning and school environment for our children. All teaching staff completed the Mandatory Reporting Module: “Protecting Children - Mandatory Reporting and other Obligations”. All teaching staff have a folder of policies that relate to this important topic, including:

Child Safety Policy, Mandatory Reporting Policy, Failure to Protect Policy and Failure to Disclose Policy. Our Policies have taken into account the relevant legislative requirements within the State of Victoria, including the specific requirements of the Victorian Child Safe Standards as set out in Ministerial Order. No. 870.

These policies are regularly communicated through our public website as well as through other mediums such as our newsletter, Parent Information Book, Induction packs and notice boards.

The staff meeting agenda has a standing item on Child Safety and our Advisory Committee will have that same standing item in 2018 at all of its meetings. Our code of conduct is signed off on whenever a visitor or contractor enters our school and is on permanent display in the administration building. New staff and interviewed candidates are now asked what they know about the Child Safe Standards during the interview process.

As a way of empowering student the Student Representative Council has had their role expanded and student voice and empowerment have been promoted through student surveys, class meetings and circle time. Our student leadership roles have also increased in number allowing more students to fulfil their leadership potential.

During the school review St Brigid’s received positive feedback on how we have implemented school policies and how we are building a culture of child safety in the school.

The surrounding areas are under development and we are working closely with the developers throughout the year. Planning and processes have been set up for the infrastructure to allow for sewerage to be connected in 2018.

The school has seen a great development of the school grounds and this year shade sails were purchased for our Senior Adventure Playground and planning for the introduction of a Japanese Peace Garden in 2018 has commenced.

Providing Leadership opportunities for our students has once again been a strong focus. there are numerous Leadership roles that the students can undertake, particularly in Year 6. A Leadership Day has been established where our Year 5 students have an opportunity to reflect on the actions and attributes leaders need in order to be successful and empower others.

The annual essential Safety Measures audit was conducted in October and registered a score of 100%.
