Corpus: The Freshman Retreat

March 2015

Dear Freshman Parent(s) or Guardian(s):

Welcome to you and your student! I am Katie Davis, the First Years Chaplain in the Department of Formation and Ministry. It is my job to provide spiritual formation, programming and support for our freshman and sophomore students at Saint Ignatius. Whether your incoming freshman is your first or fifth Ignatius student, I want to take this moment to extend my welcome, and share with you details of our freshman retreat and service program. Attached is the permission form for the freshman retreat. Please print and fill out this double-sided form, and submit it at your interview so that your student is ready to go in the fall.

Our freshman retreat is called Corpus. This Latin word for “body” is meant to call to mind our participation in the Body of Christ, as well as the community at Saint Ignatius, our student body. The retreat focuses on what it means to be a good member of the body—to live our faith, serve others and be our best selves. To this end the day is a mix of prayer (beginning with a commissioning Mass in the morning), service to the greater Chicago area (through supervised service trips across the city), reflection (in small groups facilitated by the Arrupe Mentors—senior guides for our freshmen), and inspiration (hearing from our older students about how faith, community and service have impacted their SICP experience).

While more details will be shared via email in the fall, here are a few advance notes regarding Freshman Retreat:

§ Retreat is Wednesday, October 14, 2015 (the same day as sophomore and junior class testing). § The retreat day is 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., beyond the usual hours students are here. Fall athletes are excused from

after school athletic commitments that day. § Students of all faiths are required to make the retreat; it is a graduation requirement. § Students are accompanied to retreat service sites by SICP adults, returning to school by 2:00 p.m.

With its focus on community and service, this retreat is a great introduction to the service expectations of an Ignatius student. All Ignatius freshmen complete 10 hours of service during their first year here. They receive 3 credit hours for the work they do during freshman retreat. The other hours must be completed at pre-approved service sites. To receive approval students must personally contact their chaplain, in person during the school year and via email when the office is closed in summer, to receive a service verification form. Each student must do this for him/herself for each site. This allows us to ensure that their work meets the criteria for their freshman expectation; it allows students to take active ownership of their service; and it allows our office to track the over 350 freshman students’ work (meaning we also have a back up approval to show your student’s initiative even if they lose the original form!). The form serves as approval as well as a document to track the student’s hours at a service site. Once the student finishes working at the site she/he submits the completed form to Formation and Ministry.

Through our retreat and service programs we hope that this first year is a great introduction to your students about what it means to be women and men of faith, for and with others. In the fall I will be in further touch via email. In the meantime, feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Ms. Katie Davis First Years Chaplain Saint Ignatius College Prep [email protected] 312-432-8456

Dear Parents,

Sometimes we find that our students have problems that inhibit their learning (i.e., learning disabilities, dyslexia, A.D.D., etc.) and we try to provide support and help as needed. If you are willing to provide documentation or an evaluation with recommendations for teachers that could be used by your student’s counselor to provide help, please indicate your willingness by filling out the information below. You will then be contacted by your student’s counselor when the school year begins. If the student has a documented need for this service, we provide extended time for semester and final exams. If the student is approved by the College Board and/or ACT, we will provide extended time for the PSAT, PLAN, ACT and SAT. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this request.

I would like my student’s counselor to contact me.
