THEN AND NOWLooking back, dreams have changed
When kids are younger, they have hopes, dreamsand special preferences for just about everything they do. As time goes on, people grow and develop new wants and needs. As the 2015 seniors wind down to their last days at Black River Falls High School, they reflect on these changes in time.
KASEY KOPPLoved to play with Barbies, now loves cheer
“My sister has always been a huge impact on me. That is how my influence with barbies and cheerleading came around. She always loved Barbies, so that’s why I loved them, too. I wanted to be just like her. Then, when she was too old for Barbies, she got
into cheerleading, and so I would always go to her practices with her, and I got really into it. I figured I had to do whatever she would take up next, and so I fell in love with cheerleading.”
MATT LAFAUNGE From Madison to St. Thomas
“I was a basketball kid when I was younger. I’d always loved watching the Badger basketball team at the Kohl Center, and one day I knew I wanted to go to Madison. As time went on, my passion for football rose, and I knew I wanted to take my football career to the next level. That’s when I knew my young dream of going to Madison ws gone and my new dream of playing football was my new goal. I wanted to go where I could get my
best education and a great experience in football, and University of St. Thomas is the best place for that, which is why I’ll be attending there next fall.”
TAYLOR HAMILTON Dreamed of being an astronaut. Plans changed.
“When I was younger, I obviously wanted to be something cool, which in my mind was an astronaut. I also knew there weren’t many women astronauts, so that made me want to be one even more. But when I got to high school, I took one of Mr. Boerger’s classes, AP Psychology, and I absolutely loved it! It was fascinating to me, and it made me want to be in a career with that concept, which is why I now want to be a psychiatrist. This also made me want to
major in music therapy because it will help people and music had become a big part of my life growing up.”
BRANDON DRANGSTVIETStill loves Spongebob.“When I was five, I liked Spongebob a lot just because I simply enjoyed cartoons, and it was entertaining. Unlike most people, as I grew older, my favorite show maintained the same. I still like Spongebob because it takes me back to when I was younger, and it’s one of the only Nickelodeon shows that has stuck to its roots. “

SENIOR ISSUE 15’What we will miss and what we won’t miss
“I won’t miss busy work or petty drama,” said Breanna Krause-Huser.
“I’ll miss the friends that I’ve made throughout the years. I’ll miss the teachers that we had my junior year. I’ll miss the fun times that we’ve had in choir and the beautiful music we’ve made throughout the years,” said Kelsee Bradt.
“Something that I will miss about high school is being so close with all of my friends every day and knowing that they are right down the street to
go and visit if I miss them. College is going to be hard without my friends,” said Hanna Hodge.
“I will miss seeing my best friends everyday, and the not-so-close friends you say hi to in the hallway,” said Tiffany Gorski.
“I won’t miss the incredible amount of unruly, uncooperative, and unintelligent minds floating along in the halls,” said Gary Ramos.
“Things that I won’t miss are the lunches, being extremely hot/cold in the school, the bad substitutes, being around the underclassmen, having people lock your locker, and having to be fully functioning by 7:45 am. But overall, I think I’ll miss it more than I realize now,” said Liz Lipke
“I think I’m going to miss knowing everyone in high school. In college there won’t be many (or any at all) familiar faces, while in high school you can literally name everyone in your class,” said Erin Rodenberg
“I won’t miss having to get up at 6:40 a.m. every day for 13 years,” said Brent Funmaker.
“I won’t miss waking up every morning,” said Eli Parker.
“What I would miss about high school is having a daily schedule every weekday, and I would miss seeing my friends at school,” said
“I will miss seeing all of my really good friends that I made in high school and the years before, and I will miss those special moments I have had with people in my high school career,” said Jessa Amman.

BLUSH-WORTHYWhat once made these seniors cringe now material for laughs
After 13 years of education in a small town, embarrassing moments are sure to pop up and are almost always remembered.
“My most embarrassing moment is when we were all coming back inside from a flag raising, and I wasn’t watching where I was going, and I fell off the curb. In front of a lot of people,” said Mercedes Peters.
“During my sophomore year, I was in a rush to get to basketball practice, and so I stuffed all of my clothes in my duffel bag.
I was running down the hallway and something slipped out of my bag. My friends who were running with me stopped and started laughing. I turned around and the janitor was pointing at my bra, which is what fell out of my bag. That was the most embarrassing moment in high school,” said Gracie Rave.
“I was playing the field in big base and one of my friends who was on the other team kicked the ball, ran up behind me and pulled my gym shorts down in front of the entire gym class,” said Brandon Dragsteveit.
“In second grade, Jackson Perry threw up all over me, and I had to walk down to the office covered in vomit,” said Matt LaFaunge.
“[My] most embarrassing moment was [the] summer between freshman and sophomore
year when our basketball team was practicing, and I ran into the the volleyball nets because I didn’t know they were there at the moment I went for the ball,” said Jordan Rondorf.
“So, cool fact: I have double jointed hips and they always pop out of socket, and usually I end up falling down. Well, I was walking down the hallway with Sierra and the biggest crush of my life was standing at the end talking to his friend. Before I know it, my hip pops out, and I totally biffed it right in front of him, and he definitely saw it. Better yet, I couldn’t get up and just walk it off. It really hurt, and I stayed on the ground for a while,” said Miranda Schnur.
“Senior year, I was running full speed down the hallway because it was early in the morning, and I didn’t want to be
late, and I was turning the corner down the blue hallway and then I straight up wiped out. Like all the way down on my chest. My hands smacked the floor, and I almost died. I even yelled ‘woah’ really loud. Luckily, the hallway was mostly empty, so only a few people saw it, but when I got back into the classroom, everyone knew I had fallen because they heard me yell and then heard me smack the ground,” said Lauren Harkner.
“8th grade. Variety show. I had the brilliant idea of singing James Blunt’s “Goodbye My Lover.” It was incredibly unfitting for an 8th grader to be singing such a song, and it was just incredibly awkward. Cringeworthy, it was indeed,” said Gary Ramos.
“Back in my freshman days, I remember asking a

TRENDING: Four years of trends came and went
Remember the all the viral videos, crazy fashions and challenges from fall 2010 until now? Here’s a quick recap of some of the most popular trends of the past four years.
Freshman Year 2011-2012 PlankingPlanking quickly became a trend in 2011. In order to plank, one must lay flat on their stomach with their arms next to their side. Planking typically
was done in a strange and unusual place.
Cinnamon ChallengeEveryone loved a good challenge. The Cinnamon Challenge was a viral food challenge where one filmed him or herself eating a spoonful of cinnamon in under 60 seconds without any water. The dryness of the cinnamon resulted in dry mouth and throat that could cause coughing, gagging and vomiting.
TebowingNamed after the NFL quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles,
Tebowing became a phenomenon for football fans everywhere. In order to “Tebow,” you simply get on one knee and bring a hand up to your forehead in a praying position. Tebowing is done any time and any place, no matter what others are doing around you.
Sophomore Year 2012-2013
Cat BreadCat breading became a popular activity to do with your pet cat. To cat bread, you simply take a piece of bread, cut a hole in it, stick it on your cat’s
head, and post it on social media.
Harlem ShakeThe Harlem Shake quickly became viral in February of 2013. The Harlem Shake is a video in which a large group of people dance to the song Harlem Shake with weird props and silly outfits when the beat drops.
TwerkingTwerking is a type of dancing in which an individual, usually a female, dances to music involving hip movements

The bell had already rung so every class had begun. I accidentally walked into Rykken’s classroom filled with upperclassmen. Everyone stopped and looked at me as I tried playing it off. Freshman history,” said Bo Kindt.
“Fall concert sophomore year. I remember it as if it were yesterday. As a band we put on a concert
in the gym, and we wore our marching uniforms and stuff. After we march out and did our football pregame routine we sat down in the chairs and played pep band music. This was my first fall concert and I noticed everyone was taking off their marching hats, so I decided to do the

same. Then I realized I couldn’t! My helmet was stuck to my hair, and I couldn’t get my helmet off! Ms. Hardie stood there waiting with her arms up ready to conduct. Everyone in the band was awkwardly staring at me with their instruments up and ready to play, and the bleachers were full. Even though the gym was full of people, it was completely quiet in there. In the end Ms. Hardie had to help me get my stupid helmet off. I was so embarrassed and I’ve never felt my face get so warm,” said Mackenzie Quackenbush.

FRESHMAN FLASHBACKLooking back four years, a lot has changed
Some may think high school will be a long four years. With all those tests, essays, homework deadlines and projects, by the time it ends, those four years went by in the blink of an eye. These are some memories you can look back on from your first year of high school.

KayCee Sanders, Heather Youngthunder and I were making a cupcake/ cake tower for KayCee’s birthday (we also ended up making a pizza roll tower with 300 pizza rolls, which we ate all of at 3 a.m.), and ended up getting into a frosting fight. The end result, you can see. Even though she passed away, these are the memories I hold on to.” Katelyn Breheim

“I remember walking into the high school my very first day and thinking that there was no way that I would get to know my way around. I also remember saying that there was no way that my group of friends will change and that I will never change. I was wrong about all of those things, but once I got used to my routine, everything started to fall into place, and now I can’t believe that my high school career is almost at its end. Hanna Hodge

SCHOLAR ATHLETESTennant, LaFaunge earn conference award
Matt LaFaunge and Karly Tennant earned the 2015 Scholar Athlete Award. These two athletes have been working hard for years now and their hard work has now paid off! To be an All Conference Scholar Athlete winner, an athlete must have a 3.5 or higher GPA during the grading term his/her sport is taking place and earn a varsity letter in the sport.
How do you manage school and sports?
KT: Managing school and sports is not always easy, especially when you’re a three-sport athlete. I always tell myself that it’s school that comes first, then sports. If I can’t do well in school, then I can’t participate in sports.
ML: These past four years, I have used the time given in class to complete as much of the work as I can so I am able to focus on my sport after school. The time you put into sports has to be put into school otherwise it won’t work out.
Does school and having good grades make you more determined in your sports? Why or why not?
KT: Having good grades definitely makes me more determined because like I
said before, if I can’t keep my grades up I can’t be a part of sports, and that would be devastating!
ML: Well, yes! I like to say that if you are disciplined and do well in school, that will transfer over to the sports you play. It is all about having a positive mindset and wanting to achieve excellence in school and sports. I strive to do the best I can in anything. Who doesn’t want to be good at something?
I know this is a huge achievement. How do you feel about it?
KT: When I found out that I was receiving this award I felt so unbelievably thankful. I could not have been more proud. When you receive something as awesome as that, it really makes you think about how all your hard work and dedication has paid off.
ML: This was quite an honor for Karly and myself. It is a great feeling to know that the hard work in school and in sports has paid off for the both of us and hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Any advice for younger athletes?
KT: My advice for younger athletes is to constantly remind yourself that anything is achievable, even if at first you aren’t where you want to be. Just keep setting your goals high, and one day you with be the athlete you’ve always wanted to be and better!
ML: To the younger athletes: Enjoy your time playing the sports you love. There is nothing like competing in high school sports and your time here really does fly by. Work your tail off and never
settle for good. Be great! I recommend setting team and personal goals every year and work your tail off to achieve them. Don’t go through high school without trying something new. These years you never get back and the memories you will make will last forever.
What has been your biggest challenge at the high school leve—academically or athletically?
KT: Biggest challenge for me, which I have been working on since I’ve started high school, is to break the 800 record for track! The record stands at 2.26. With all my hard work thus far I am now down to a 2.28. I’m going to continue to set my goals high this last year to finally break that record. I’m still just grateful that I was able to receive this award. All thanks to my amazing coaches and my wonderful family.
ML: Athletically, my biggest challenge in high school was playing varsity in every sport my freshman year. While that came with praise, it also came with doubt from people. Some people didn’t think I deserved to be on varsity, but I felt I was good enough. Also, playing two sports in the spring was a lot to handle when it came to school, but I got through it just fine, and I don’t regret it at all!

PLAYING FAVORITESTeachers bring motivation, inspiration
Many teachers and students in Black River Falls have special relationships that help make students’ days brighter.
“My favorite teacher is Mr. Lobenstein. He has always pushed me as a student as well as a writer. He works hard to reach his students on a personal level and is always trying to connect with us. He is a teacher I feel comfortable going to if I have a problem in class and he is willing to go the extra mile to help students understand and comprehend their homework.” Kasey Kopp
“Mrs. Christenson and Mr. Johnson. They both are amazing in the classroom, and always push their students to be what they know they can be.” Katelyn Breheim
“One of my many favorite teachers is Mr. Boerger. He has motivated me academically and has inspired me to become the person I am today.”
Mr. Boerger is a very understanding teacher who pushes students to do their best. He makes all of his classes enjoyable and fun especially with his famous “Bad Candy” quizzes. He is always there to give advice and help in anyway he can.” Erin Rodenberg
“Mr. Lobenstein. He is always in a cheery mood and does his best to make his classes fun! He is also someone that I know I can trust, and can go to for help with anything.” Sabrina Gunning
“Ms. Finch. She’s just a wonderful, funny, and kind teacher. She’s always willing to talk with students and she understands what kids
are going through. Also, you’ll never catch her in a bad mood. Ms. Gilbertson will always give things to you straight up. She doesn’t sugarcoat things and she likes to have fun in her classes. I really like how Mr. Boerger treats his students as young adults, and he expects students to put in that effort. Also, his bad candy quizzes make Mondays tolerable and his classes are fun and interesting.” Elizabeth Lipke
“Ms. Ruka and Ms. Finch. They are ALWAYS there when I need someone to talk to and always show that they truly care when they talk to me. They’ve really been inspirations in my life and have taught me so much more to life
than what’s to be learned in the classroom. I am extremely thankful to have these two wonderful women in my life!” Miranda Schnur
“Mr. Wrobel. His sense of humor and the way that he is willing to help the students learn in a way that is fun for them. Also, his magic tricks and guitar just make class a better place to be!” Hanna Hodge
“Mr. Boerger and Mr. Lobenstein because they’re really cool and always let seniors vent to them when we need to, and they actually listen to our opinions! They always know how to keep class fun!” Kelsee Bradt
Senior Kasey Kopp chose English teacher Brad Lobenstein as her favorite teacher. Students are more likely to refer to the AP English teacher as “Lobi.”

If I sleep on the couch, I just use a little white pillow that we have. If I am sleeping over somewhere and I did not bring a stuffed animal or a small pillow, then I usually just bunch up a sweatshirt and use that
instead. If I don’t have anything to hug when I am falling asleep, I will not fall asleep, and if I do fall asleep I will not sleep that good.”Jessa Ammann
“Baby blanket.”Clint Voge
“I always used to walk on the tip of my toes. I thought I would outgrow it, but I still find myself doing it sometimes.”Amara Baker
“I do everything in even numbers, for example, the number of steps I take while walking or I make patterns. I have a teddy bear that I [have slept] next to every night ever since I was two weeks old.”Adriana Hernandez-White

From baby blankets to care bears, seniors still hold on to momentos of the past. Some seniors have habits they can’t break, like wiping the makeup from their hands onto their walls.
