Jim McLaughlin, the only person to coach both a women’s and a men’s volleyball team to NCAA titles and a former women’s volleyball national coach of the year at the University of Wash-ington, was named head volleyball coach at the University of

Notre Dame January 17, 2015.

McLaughlin (pronounced muh-GLOFF-lin) coached the USC men’s team to an NCAA title in 1989-90 and then led the University of Washington wom-en’s team to the 2005 NCAA crown. He comes to Notre Dame following 14 highly successful seasons as the Huskies’ coach, a tenure that featured four trips to the NCAA national semifinals in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2013. He earned rave reviews for turning around struggling women’s programs both at Washington and at Kansas State University.

McLaughlin also brings Notre Dame family ties with him back to South Bend. He spent one season as an Irish assistant volleyball coach in 1996 under former head coach Debbie Brown -- and his wife, the former Margaret Jarc, is a 1993 Notre Dame graduate, a former Irish women’s soccer player, 1992 co-captain and four-year monogram winner. She spent two years as a Notre Dame assistant women’s soccer coach (1995 and 1996), with the Irish win-ning their first NCAA title in that sport in 1995.

With 25 years of NCAA head coaching experience, McLaughlin has proven his abilities both to recruit talented student-athletes and to cultivate champi-onship programs. He has made 19 appearances in the NCAA postseason in his 25 years, including four with Kansas State, which advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2000. He also spent seven seasons as the men’s head coach at USC, where he won the 1990 national championship and finished as runner-up in 1991.

McLaughlin is coming off a 2014 season at Washington in which the Huskies set a program record for regular-season wins with their 31-3 overall mark, ranked as high as No. 2 in the AVCA poll, earned a No. 3 national seed in the NCAA Championship and earned a slot in the NCAA bracket for the 13th straight year, the eighth-longest active streak. Leading his team was outside hitter Krista Vansant, a two-time Honda Award winner (2013 and 2014), the 2014 ESPNW national player of the year, the 2014 Capital One Academic All-American of the Year in volleyball and a two-time Pac-12 player of the year.

In addition to a national title, the McLaughlin era at Washington produced four NCAA Final Four appearances, three national players of the year, three Pacific-12 Conference titles, 17 players who combined for 34 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America awards, nine CoSIDA Academic All-America scrolls and 58 all-Pac-12 awards.

McLaughlin was recognized by his peers as the 2004 AVCA National Coach of the Year and Pacific-12 Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2013. The four Pacific-12 Coach of the Year honors are tied for second most in conference history. McLaughlin took over the Washington program in 2001, inheriting a team that finished last in the Pac-10 standings in 2000. Within five seasons he transformed the Huskies from worst to first, not just in the Pac-10 but also in the nation, as Washington captured the 2005 NCAA title in McLaughlin’s fifth season.

Under his direction the Huskies qualified for 13 straight NCAA Championships (2002-14), ad-vancing to the Final Four on four occasions, with seven Elite Eight and eight Sweet 16 appearances since 2002. Washington finished first or second in the loaded Pac-12 eight times in the past 11 years.

Fry Turning In Historical SeasonSophomore Sam Fry has racked up an impressive year with 321 kills and 116 blocks, which puts her in rare ter-ritory in recent Notre Dame history ... here’s the list of players since 2001 that have totaled 300+ kills & 100+ blocks:

Lauren Brewster (2005) - 476 kills, 202 blocksLauren Brewster (2004) - 406 kills, 172 blocksEmily Loomis (2003) - 403 kills, 121 blocksEmily Loomis (2002) - 400 kills, 108 blocksLauren Brewster (2003) - 379 kills, 192 blocksLauren Kelbley (2003) - 363 kills, 135 blocksKristy Kreher (2001) - 331 kills, 101 blocksMalinda Goralski (2001) - 322 kills, 171 blocksSam Fry (2015) - 321 kills, 116 blocksEmily Loomis (2004) - 313 kills, 126 blocksJeni Houser (2013) - 311 kills, 117 blocksKellie Sciacca (2010) - 306 kills, 119 blocksKatie Neff (2002) - 303 kills, 109 blocks

Since 2008 when set points went from 30 to 25, Fry is one of just three Notre Dame players to reach the 300+ kill, 100+ block threshold (Jeni Houser - 2013 & Kellie Sciacca - 2010).

DeJarld Starting At Libero As A FreshmanThe third true freshman in the last four years to start at libero for the Irish, Ryann DeJarld is one of just two true freshmen to start at the position in the ACC joining Louisville’s Molly Sauer ... DeJarld is 7th in the league in digs per set (4.07) ... she has three matches with 28+ digs, with all three performances ranking in the top 11 by an ND player in the side-out era (2001-present).

Kuhn Showing VersatilityThe only player to start every match this season, sopho-more Sydney Kuhn sits second on the team in kills (247) and digs (271) and is second in service aces (25) and plays all six rotations on the court.

Morningstar Efficient At MiamiFreshman Meg Morningstar totaled eight kills on 11 swings for an impressive .727 attack percentage at Mi-ami (11/15) ... it was the first time an Irish player had reached the .700 mark with a minimum of 10 swings since former honorable mention All-American Toni Alug-bue put together an historic performance in a win versus Buffalo (9/1/12) where she had 21 kills and no errors on 30 attempts for a .700 attack percentage.

Impressive Freshman PerformancesAt the Seton Hall Classic, freshmen Meg Morningstar and DeJarld turned in some historic performances ... Morningstar posted 11 blocks against Temple, which were the most by an Irish player since 2013 (Jeni Houser, 13) and tied for the eighth-most since 2001.

In the nightcap, DeJarld totaled 30 digs against Hofstra, which were the most for an Irish player since 2010 (Kris-ten Dealy, 34) and the fifth-most since 2001.

A week later at the Golden Dome Invitational, fellow freshman Rebecca Nunge had a breakout performance to earn all-tournament team accolades ... she posted 23 kills (.339 A%) and nine blocks in three matches.

All-Tournament TeamsJunior Katie Higgins earned all-tournament team hon-ors at the Blue Raider Bash to open the season ... she posted team highs in kills (43), service aces (6) and blocks (11) while attacking at a .326 clip.

DeJarld claimed all-tournament team accolades at the Seton Hall Classic after totaling 52 digs and three ser-vice aces.

Nunge and senior Haley Bonneval received all-tourney accolades at the Golden Dome Invitational ... Bonneval had a team-high 16 kills in a win over Mississippi State, while Nunge attacked at a .339 clip on the weekend.

Fry posted 43 kills and 14 blocks at the Purdue Boiler Box Challenge to earn all-tournament team accolades.

2015 CaptainsThis year’s captains are Higgins, Dilfer & Natalie John-son ... Dilfer & Johnson are believed to be just the third & fourth sophomore captains in program history besides Mary Jo Hensler & Josie Maternowski in 1982.

Young SquadThe Irish have an extremely young roster in 2015, with only one senior and two juniors leading the team ... the rest of the roster is made up of six freshmen and six sophomores.
