“The  Fighting  69th”  2015   “The Fighting Sixty-ninth,” under the leadership of the current Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Seán M. Flynn, marks the 10th anniversary of the deployment of its 1st Battalion in OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, 2004-2005, as part of TASK FORCE WOLFHOUND. Commanded in Iraq by Lieutenant Colonel Geoff Slack of the 69th Infantry, the Wolfhounds cleared and secured the main highway between Baghdad International Airport and the International Zone in Baghdad, which became known as “Route Irish.” It was also responsible for securing Taji. At wreath laying ceremonies around New York, officers and enlisted personnel of the 69th, as well as veterans of the deployment, and members of the Veteran Corps of the 69th are remembering the 19 brothers in arms of the Task Force who made the ultimate sacrifice. Ceremonies in Louisiana honored those of the 256th of the Louisiana Army National Guard, who also made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Task Force with the 69th. To honor these fallen members of TASK FORCE WOLFHOUND, the 69th are hosting a number of Gold Star families at the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Mass for the Deceased Members of the 69th Regiment of New York, as well as at ceremonies at its Lexington Avenue Armory. The New York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee have a special parade reviewing stand area for the these Gold Star families. To keep green the memories of a previous generation, the 69th also marks the 70th anniversary of its participation in the Central Pacific Campaign during World War II, including (as part of the 27th “New York” Division) the invasions of Makin Atoll in 1943, of Saipan in 1944, and of Okinawa in 1945. 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the American Civil War and of the 69th’s participation in it, 1861 - 1865, including being present at Appomattox in April 1865. Going back to the origins of the 69th, since 1851 the Regiment is proud to be part of the New York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.
