OVERVIEWEvery year the NC Mountain State Fair

showcases the best western North Carolina has to offer. The mountain heritage and local talents on display at the fair are what makes it a unique and enjoyable event.

It’s that delicate balance of sustaining the well-worn and treasured traditions of the fair and introducing a few fresh attractions that has made the NC Mountain State Fair a destination for families for the last 21 years.

Agricultural fairs are the windows that the public views agriculture through, and more importantly they provide opportunity for them to experience it firsthand.

2015 THEME“Mountain Fair! Mountain Fun!”

ATTENDANCEA record 191,596 people attended the fair in

2013.

FOODFor many, the fair means one thing: food. Lots

and lots of food, often deep fried, on a stick or deep fried and on a stick. Fair-goers marvel each year at the various concoctions, returning to old favorites and trying new treats.

Can you say fried pineapple on a stick? Or pork chop on a stick? Then there’s deepfried Milky Way bar on a stick, cheesecake on a stick, fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a stick and don’t forget about the fried pickle on a stick. It seems like everything at the fair just tastes better on a stick.

EMPLOYMENTThe NC Mountain State Fair has approximately

400 paid employees for the 10 day duration of the fair.

ENTERTAINMENTOver 100 acts perform at the fairs’ numerous

free entertainment venues.

ATTRACTIONSDrew Expositions features more than 40 carnival

rides and numerous games of skill. Kiddyland offers 30+ carnival rides for pint-sized fair visitors.

AGRICULTURE & COMPETITIONOver $240,000 in competition premiums is

available in 2015. Livestock exhibitors compete for ribbons and cash in hundreds of competitions. The Expo Building showcases Arts and Crafts, Photos, Quilts and Hand Sewn Clothing, Cooking Competitions, Wood Carvings and many other Competitive Entry items.

FACILITY INFORMATIONThe WNC Agricultural Center is owned by

the State of North Carolina and operated by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The facility and the NC Mountain State Fair are completely self-supported and receive no appropriated tax funds for operational expenses.

The NC Mountain State Fairs’ mission is to educate and involve our guests by providing a world-class agricultural showcase that is innovative, entertaining and fun.

HOURS :

Friday: Gates open at 9:00am; Rides open at 10:00am, close at 1:00am

Saturday: Gates open at 9:00am; Rides open at 10:00am, close at midnight

1st Sunday: Gates open at 9:00am; Rides open at 10:00am, close at 11:00 pm

2nd Sunday: Closing night; Rides, buildings, and all exhibits close at 9:00 p.m.

Monday –Thurs: Gates open at 3:00pm; Rides open at 4:00pm, close at 11:00 pm

Friday Night Frenzy: Sept. 11 & Sept. 18 9:00pm till 1:00 am

DIRECTIONS:

From Asheville, take I-26 East to Exit #40 (Asheville Airport Exit). Turn right at top of exit ramp onto Highway NC 280. After the 2nd stoplight, turn left into Gate 6 or 7.

From South Carolina on I-26 West toward North Carolina, after you enter North Carolina, take exit #40 (Asheville Airport Exit). Turn left at top of exit ramp onto NC 280. After the 3rd stop light, turn left into Gate 6.

FREE PARKING:

FREE parking is available on fairground property. Parking is located on Highway 280 at Gate 6.

There is handicap parking provided for those with valid tags next to the ticket booths at Entrance A. For the McGough Arena handicap parking is near Entrance E.

Wheelchair, scooter, and stroller rentals are available at two locations: Entrance A and inside Entrance “E” at Blue Barn.

BOJANGLES SEA LION SPLASH The sea lions will amaze the crowd as they balance balls, shoot hoops, dance, perform handstands and show their pretty smiles. This is the only show in the U.S. to feature both California and South American sea lions. The idea of the Sea Lion Splash originated when Squalus started taking in beached sea lions who were unable to be returned to the wild due to age or injuries and unable to provide food for themselves. Squalus provides a permanent home for these sea lions for the rest of their lives.

HANSEN’S SPECTACULAR ACROBATIC SENSATIONS An Amazing family thrill show with aerial acts over 30 feet high! The show includes incredible juggling, trampoline, skating, and cloudswing acts. Shane has been in show business since a young age, roller-skating at the age of three in the “Rolling Diamonds” act with his parents. For years Alicia performed with the Flying Redpaths and was trained by her father Mike Redpath. Now their three girls are following in their footsteps as a new generation of circus performers is born.

HORSES, HORSES, HORSES! Horses Horses Horses! is a performing horse show to delight those of all ages. The show consists of 12 miniature stallions, a beautiful Freisian from Holland and a black Arabian. The horses waltz, bow and rear, lay down sit up and walk on their hind legs, perform at liberty and under saddle. A show to be seen and enjoyed by all.

JOSH KNOTTS & LEA - EXTREME ILLUSIONS & ESCAPES Josh Knotts has performed across the nation and in 6 countries bringing a high energy mix of illusions, theatre and comedy for a magic performance incomparable to other magicians. Josh and Lea pride themselves on their mix of Las Vegas style grand illusions, skillful edge of your seat escapes and audience participation-- they will even use audience members in some of their big illusions!

BRAD COMEDY HYPNOTIST Family Friendly Vegas Style Hypnosis Show. Watch in absolute disbelief as your friends, family, co-workers and students forget their names, become Elvis impersonators, or even jump up and down convinced that they have “won the lottery!” You’ll have the opportunity to take part in the show and become an instant star or just sit back, relax, and watch the fun unfold! The show is clean comedy and appropriate for all audiences.

DIXIE STARLIGHT EXPRESS Talented cowgirls deliver precise, fast paced performances on horseback, also adding pageantry and patriotism.



APPALACHIAN WILDLIFE REFUGE The organization was formed by a group of licensed rehabilitators, nonprofit professionals, environmental educators, and other concerned citizens, in response to the increasing numbers of wildlife in need of assistance and the lack of people trained and funded to help them in Western North Carolina.

CHAINSAW ARTIST JOEY ROWE Follow the buzz of a chainsaw and you’ll find Joey Rowe carving out fun at the fair. With chain saw roaring and chips flying, Joey Rowe’s precision and skill quickly transforms a log into a true work of art.

HERITAGE WALK You are invited to march to a cadence rooted in the past, celebrating the present and anticipating the future. Throughout the day, a number of demonstrations are offered. Ranging from molasses making, blacksmithing, pottery, colorful needlework to basket weaving – questions, from all ages, are encouraged.

ROWDY ROOSTER PUPPET SHOW Rowdy is joined on stage by his best friend, the sometimes mischievous Diesel the Weasel. It’s always Rooster vs Weasel in this uplifting barnyard kids adventure, that will make you want to join in the fun, shouting out what they should do next.

KENYA SAFARI ACROBATS The Kenya Safari Acrobats offer a truly unique cultural experience. Hailing from the heart of Africa, this awe-inspiring and dynamic dance troupe takes acrobatics to exhilarating extremes. The group members learned acrobatics as children on the beaches of Kenya, as a means to break free from an impoverished country. Now they serve as artistic ambassadors for Kenya as they travel the globe, entertaining and inspiring audiences of all ages.

MOUNTAIN MUSIC Locals often look forward to the Mountain Music Festival as their time to finally relax and wind down from a day at the fair. Claim your space and settle in for unforgettable night of music. Come hear the sweet sounds of Appalachia as bands perform nightly on the Heritage Stage.



LEON JACOBS, JR. This piano show dares to go where you take it with comedy, music, and a whole lot more. Never scripted and completely hilarious, you’ll be singing along to a variety of music... from Elvis to Snoop Dogg, Leon will try anything!

AGRICADABRA PRESENTS: THE SCIENCE OF AG Brad Matchett is a magician who calls himself an educational agricultural specialist. The Agricadabra show brings agriculture to life in a Fun and Creative way.

HOGWAY SPEEDWAY Watch stampedes of ear-flapping squealers chase the checkered flag. These portly porkers appeal to all audiences.

MOOTERNITY WARD Watch the miracle of birth at the “Mooternity Ward.” Agriculture students along with veterinarians will be with the animals to oversee, assist with the deliveries and narrate the birth events that occur during Fair hours. Thanks to fertility management techniques, organizers anticipate several live births each day; but, of course, the exact timing is still up to Mother Nature.
