Welcome from NADA’s President

Welcome to the 26th Annual Conference for the NADA protocol. This year the theme is Expanding Integrative Health – Bringing the Spirit of NADA to Ohio. Similar to many states in the United States, Ohio is experiencing an opioid epidemic. In the last 13 years Ohio has seen an increase of almost 1,000% in prescribed opiate doses per capita and heroin deaths are on the rise. We hope to introduce the NADA protocol as a well-established, cost-effective and non-pharmaceutical intervention that is ideally poised to be implemented widely in hospital and community settings in Ohio and beyond. It is important to realize that trauma and stress go hand in hand with chronic pain. Opioids are most often not the treatment of choice and can actually make people worse. Effective treatment needs to incorporate ways to teach people how to relax and manage stress and trauma without using addictive substances. This allows them to learn that they have a natural instinct to heal and recover their well-being. Acudetox can be the first thing a person experiences in treatment that has an imme-diate effect – calming, relaxing and aiding sleep. This can then help them be more open to the other aspects of treatment. We are excited to offer a rich program that highlights areas where NADA has been integrated effectively, both in inpatient and outpatient settings, to help with chronic pain and trauma and reduce the use of opiate medications as well as help with withdrawal from the opioid medications that have been used.

Whether you are new to NADA or a long time member, I welcome you to the conference and encourage you to introduce yourself and visit with me and the other board members. We encourage all questions you may have about NADA. In the “Spirit of NADA” we welcome all suggestions you may have as to how NADA can help open the path to recovery for people challenged by addictions, mental illness and physical and emotional trauma.

NADA Mission StatementThe National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA), a not-for-profit training and advo-cacy organization, encourages community wellness through the use of a standardized auricular acu-puncture protocol for behavioral health, including addictions, mental health, and disaster and emo-tional trauma. We work to improve access and effectiveness of care through promoting policies and practices which integrate NADA-style treatment with other Western behavioral health modalities.
