PRESIDENT’S LETTER Lori A. Karol, MD 2015 May E-Newsletter Welcome to the May 2015 POSNA E-Newsletter. As I sit down to compose this letter, I am excited and honored to be able to represent our society this year and serve as its 32 nd President. I am looking forward to a busy and fruitful year, working with our talented board of directors, enthusiastic and expert society staff, and the many members volunteering their time and talents to our many committees. The Atlanta annual meeting was a huge success. Led by Greg and Madelyn Mencio, local hosts Tim and Meredith Schrader, and Ernie Sink and his Program Committee, the meeting was a spectacular academic and social experience. There were over 600 abstracts submitted, which the Program Committee and invited readers reviewed. The pre-course, organized by Tony Stans, melded our established trauma experts, anchored by Jim Beaty, with our upcoming academic trauma superstars. It is often said that, in the day of the pediatric orthopaedic subspecialist, it is trauma that binds us all together. The pre-course truly had an academic offering for everyone. During the opening ceremony, the Humanitarian award winner was announced posthumously to Elizabeth Szalay for her work in the Southwest with the Native American poor and in Guatemala. While the announcement was a somber occasion, it gave me comfort to know that Elizabeth knew of her award prior to her passing, and that it meant a great deal to her. The POSNA Special Effort award was given to Jeff Sawyer for his work leading the Practice Management Committee and in performing the pediatric orthopaedic workforce assessment. The Steel lecture was given by Lisa Borders, who taught us all a bit about the philanthropic side of the Coca Cola company and its role in the history of the city of Atlanta. Thursday afternoon I was privileged to speak at the first Arabella Leet Young Members Forum, sponsored by the Shriner’s Hospitals in her memory. Mike Busch, Bryan Tompkins, and I had the pleasure of engaging with a full room of our newest pediatric orthopaedists who represent the future of POSNA. Friday, the 2015 POSNA presidential speaker was Neil Green, who provided a look back at pediatric orthopaedic treatment and how it has changed and progressed throughout his illustrious career. The POSNA Distinguished Achievement award was bestowed on Colin Moseley, who inspired us all with his eloquent comments. The Peter Armstrong, MD Shriners Hospital for Children award was given this year to Brian Smith for his paper in the QSVI session, titled, “Which Common Pediatric Orthopaedic Procedures are the Most Dangerous?” The Basic Science Paper award went to Matthew Dobbs for his paper entitled, Rare Coding Variants in Musculoskeletal Collagen Genes Are Associated with Increased Risk of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.” A new award was given this year to the best trauma paper of the meeting, in conjunction with the OTA. The award was given to Don Bae’s paper on SCAMPS in distal radius fracture care. I am humbled to say my paper, “The Effect of Compliance Monitoring on Brace Use and Success in Patients with AIS: A Final Report” was presented with the Clinical Scientific Paper award. Mark Sinclair was given the Scientific e-Poster award for his e-poster, “The Effect of Persistent Toe Walking on the Skeletal Development of the Foot and Ankle,” and William Hennrikus won the Scientific Poster award with his poster, “Ultrasound Exam at 6 Weeks of Age for Infants Born Breech with a Normal Hip Exam for Instability.” I would like to thank for their service those Board of Directors members who completed their terms this year. Our gratitude to Past President Peter Newton, Senior Member at Large Chris Reilly, Junior Member at Large Woody Sankar, and Communications Council chair Bill Hennrikus. Please welcome to the board Senior Members at Large Susan Scherl and Jeff Sawyer, Junior Member at Large Ron El Hawary, and Treasurer Elect Mark Erickson, who just completed his term as Senior Member at Large. www.posna.org

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Lori A. Karol, MD

2015 May E-Newsletter

Welcome to the May 2015 POSNA E-Newsletter. As I sit down to compose this letter, I am excited and honored to be able to represent our society this year and serve as its 32nd President.

The Peter Armstrong, MD Shriners Hospital for Children award was given this year to Brian Smith for his paper in the QSVI session, titled, “Which Common Pediatric Orthopaedic Procedures are the Most Dangerous?” The Basic Science Paper award went to Matthew Dobbs for his paper entitled, “Rare Coding Variants in Musculoskeletal Collagen Genes Are Associated with Increased Risk of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.” A new award was given this year to the best trauma paper of the meeting, in conjunction with the OTA. Mark Sinclair was given the Scientific e-Poster award for his e-poster, “The Effect of Persistent Toe Walking on the Skeletal Development of the Foot and Ankle,” and William Hennrikus won the Scientific Poster award with his poster, “Ultrasound Exam at 6 Weeks of Age for Infants Born Breech with a Normal Hip Exam for Instability.”

I would like to thank for their service those Board of Directors members who completed their terms this year. Our gratitude to Past President Peter Newton, Senior Member at Large Chris Reilly, Junior Member at Large Woody Sankar, and Communications Council chair Bill Hennrikus. Please welcome to the board Senior Members at Large Susan Scherl and Jeff Sawyer, Junior Member at Large Ron El Hawary, and Treasurer Elect Mark

Erickson, who just completed his term as Senior Member at Large.

President’s Letter continued…

Jenn Weiss will assume the role of Communications Council chair this year, and Greg Mencio will lead the Nominating Committee.

POSNA is, at its heart, a volunteer society with the mission to better the orthopaedic care for children. I would like to highlight just a few of the committees and their chairs whose hard work will move our mission forward this year:

Michelle Caird will chair the Research Committee this year. Last year, POSNA awarded $400,000+ in research grants, sponsored by our society as well as through important partnerships with industry. We aim to award a similar amount this year.

Bryan Tompkins is set to launch the newly redesigned POSNA website this summer. With Marty Herman leading the POSNAcademy online video repository and Tom McPartland as website chair, Bryan’s team has constructed a modern, bright, and useful website that will enrich our society’s online presence. Please visit the site when it goes live!

Christine Ho is taking the reins of the patient/parent online education site from Jenn Weiss. The orthokids.com website will provide interactive POSNA-written educational material for our patients and their families. Stay tuned for its debut. Bob Cho will work with Kaitlin McKinney of the POSNA office in raising POSNA’s presence in social media. Feel free to “like” us on Facebook and watch for our “tweets”.

Jeff Martus and the new E-Editorial Committee is charged with putting in place a review process for our online educational offerings. Now that more and more of our information is online rather than in print, this committee has an important task in front of them.

Colleen Sabatini will chair the COUR Committee this year. The second largest committee in our society, and by far the most popular based on number of applications to join it this year, COUR will continue to reach out across the globe to provide care to those who are in need, as well as to bring scholars from afar to our meetings for education and networking.

Ken Noonan is stepping in to lead the Educational Courses Committee this year. Global courses for 2015-2016 are already in the planning stages for Myanmar, Bogota, Columbia, Bangalore India, and China. Closer to home, Ken and his group have coordinated ICL and symposia applications for the AAOS and are busy creating tutorial offerings for the year.

Jim McCarthy has greatly expanded the Quality, Safety, and Value Initiative Committee, and has organized the group into education, advocacy and research subgroups, mirroring the organizational structure of POSNA.

Susan Scherl is the 2016 Program Chair, and is already hard at work with her committee planning for the Indianapolis meeting next year. Again, the meeting will start with a pre-course, focusing on deformity correction led by Klane White. Wednesday afternoon will begin the paper sessions. Thursday afternoon will remain free for social activities, and Friday afternoon will continue as our Subspecialty Day, this year with six subspecialty offerings (spine, hip, trauma, neuromuscular, upper extremity, and sports). The meeting will conclude Saturday after the paper sessions.

IPOS will continue under the leadership of Michael Vitale, this year joined by Don Bae. The preliminary program does offer something for everyone, so plan on joining us in Orlando December 9th through 12th.

Look in your inboxes soon for our biannual member needs assessment. The at-large members of our board, under the leadership of Eric Edmonds, are designing a questionnaire that will be as succinct as possible, but will query where you, the members, believe our society should proceed in the next two years. The results of this assessment will be analyzed in September, and are extensively used in strategic planning of society activities. Please participate.

My personal goals for the coming year include moving the registry initiative forward with possible granting of seed money this spring to competitive registry applications. I also would like to see a mentorship program take form for our newest POSNA members. I have greatly benefited through the years from the wisdom, support, and advice of my teachers, my partners, and my senior colleagues. We have grown to a large, vibrant society, with membership now over 1300 members. Growth has been most notable in the candidate membership category, which has double in size over the last five years. I envision a process which would pair interested new members just starting their careers with willing established POSNA members.

Well, we’re off and running for another year. Please do not hesitate to contact me with concerns, ideas, or issues this year. I am best reached by email at [email protected], or by my work phone (214-559-7555) or cell (972-921-0595). I look forward to an amazing journey!

POSNA Annual Meeting

2015 Thank you for coming! On behalf of the Program Committee, thank you to all of the great members and nonmembers of POSNA who attended the Annual Meeting in Atlanta. It was a complete success with 910 attendees to the annual meeting and 501 attendees at the pre-course. The quality of papers, presenters, and participation of the audience during discussion made the scientific sessions lively and educational. It was our second year with the annual meeting app, and this year it was activated on over 1100 devices throughout the meeting. As always, catching up with friends and colleagues during the social events was great fun as well. We hope you all had an excellent experience with us in Atlanta!

Ernest L. Sink, MD, Program Chair

Trauma Prevention and Disaster Response Committee This year’s meeting marked the inaugural award for “Best trauma Paper.” The award was given to Don Bae MD for his paper entitled “Implementation of a Standardized Clinical Assessment and Management Plan (SCAMP) for Pediatric Distal Radius Fractures: Effect on Quality and Care.” Thanks to the work done by this past year’s trauma chair, Anthony Riccio MD, POSNA has collaborated with the Orthopedic Trauma Association in order for this research to be presented at the fall OTA meeting in San Diego. Each year at POSNA, the best trauma paper as voted on by the trauma committee will be presented at the OTA meeting in the fall in order to foster our relationship with the OTA and to highlight outstanding trauma research done in our society. Likewise, the best pediatric paper each year at the fall meeting of the OTA will be presented at POSNA the following spring.

Young Investigator Initiative Career Development and Grant Mentoring Program Call for Submissions for program beginning with workshop November 13-15, 2015

Deadline for submissions, July 15, 2015 The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) and Bone and Joint Canada are dedicated to raising public awareness and to increasing research of musculoskeletal diseases. Research in the musculoskeletal diseases performed by young investigators is not keeping pace with the increasing burden of these diseases. In response, the Young Investigator Initiative is a career development and grant mentoring program providing early-career investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers in our field to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career. To date 162 participants have successfully obtained more than $189 million in research grants and consider this program instrumental to their success. This career development and grant mentoring program is open to promising junior faculty, senior fellows or post-doctoral researchers nominated by their department or division chairs. It is also open to senior fellows or residents that are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. Basic and clinical investigators, without or with training awards, are invited to apply. Investigators selected to take part in the program attend two workshops, 12-18 months apart, and work with faculty between workshops to develop their grant applications. The next workshop is scheduled to take place November 13-15, 2015 in Toronto, Ontario. The unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for attendees to maintain a relationship with a mentor until their application is funded.
