Review school options and their admissions priorities.
Admissions priorities is the order in which offers are made.
There are three types of schools and admissions priorities: Zoned Schools, Non-Zoned
Schools, and Choice Districts.
Each child will be considered for each school you apply to, based on the schools
admissions priorities.
Zoned Schools:
Most students have zoned schools, which is determined by the home address.
The zoned school is where you have the highest priority to attend.
Families are strongly encouraged to list their zoned school on their application.
If the zoned school has room after all zoned students are enrolled, students in
additional priority groups may be offered placement, starting with non-zoned
siblings.

Review school options and their admissions priorities.
Non-Zoned Schools:
There are schools without a zone that give priority to applicants based on sibling
priority, district of residence, participation in the schools pre-k, and in some
cases, other criteria.
Choice Districts:
Districts that have no zoned elementary schools are called Choice Districts.
Families residing in Choice Districts have priority to all schools within the district.
Districts 1 Lower East Side, 7 South Bronx, and 23 Brownsville (Brooklyn)
are choice districts.

General Education Busing
In NYC, placement in an elementary school does not guarantee yellow school bus service.
If your childs school is in a different district than where you live, school bus transportation will
not be available.
If your childs school is in the district where you live, and your child does not receive an IEP, the NYC
Department of Education will use the table below to determine if your child qualifies for free or
reduced fare transportation.
For more information about transportation options for students with IEPs, please visit:
http://schools.nyc.gov/Offices/Transportation/ServicesandEligibility/DoortoDoor .
Special Education Busing If special education transportation is listed on your childs IEP, then your child will receive busing
through that process.

Families mustsubmit an application to receive a kindergarten offer in April, even
if their child is already attending a public school for pre-kindergarten.
We encourage all families to list their zoned school on the application. Most
students will attend their zoned school for kindergarten.
Dual language programs are no longer separate options on the application. If you
are interested in dual language, apply to schools that have the program listed in
the directory. Schools will determine which students are placed in the class. We encourage you to apply to only those programs in which you would consider
enrolling their child. You can list up to 12 programs on the application.
You should rank programs in order of preference. A childs priority to a school is
determined by each schools admissions priorities, not the order in which a family
ranks the programs.
Selecting Schools on the Application

13/15
Every family that applies before the deadline will receive an offer. If we are unable
to make an offer to one of your choices, you may receive an offer to your zonedschool or another school nearby.
After receiving the offer letter, families should pre-register at schools.
Students will remain on the waitlists for any schools ranked higher on their
application than the kindergarten offer they received.
Schools will contact families if an offer can be made based on admissions priorities
and waitlist order.
Pre-registering your child at the placement offered through the admissions
process does not affect your chances at receiving an offer from another school, aGifted & Talented placement, or a charter school lottery.

Students with Disabilities
All families, including those of students with disabilities, are encouraged to participatein the kindergarten admissions process.
All schools are expected to serve the majority of students in their community. All
families are encouraged to apply to their zoned school and other schools of interest.
Students with Limited Mobility and Accessibility Needs
Families are encouraged to use the directory to identify which schools are accessible,
and apply to those programs. If a students IEP states an accessibility need, he or she
will receive an accessible school placement through the Turning 5 process.
