Denali Stud Location: Paris, Ky.Owners: Craig and Holly BandoroffWebsite: denalistud.com

Background: Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s Denali Stud near Paris, Ky., is one of the Thorough-bred industry’s leading bloodstock consignors.

Craig Bandoroff was a jockey in New Jersey in the early 1970s until a spill at Garden State Park in 1974 left him without the use of his right arm, forcing him to explore other career paths within the industry. The Ban-doroffs each gained experience working in various bloodstock and sales capacities, and in 1990 they opened Denali Stud. “Denali” is derived from the name given by the Eskimos to Mt. McKinley and means “the great one.”

In the late 1990s, Bob Lewis and his wife, Beverly, sent their champion racemare Serena’s Song to Denali when she was re-tired. Denali has sold several of Serena Song’s offspring, including Group 1 winner Sophisticat, by Storm Cat, for $3.4 million at the 2000 Keeneland July Selected Yearling Sale; Grade 2 winner Harlington, by Un-bridled, for $2.8 million at the 2003 Keene-land September Yearling Sale; and Colourful Score, a colt by Storm Cat, for $3.5 million, at the 2005 September Sale.

Denali’s high seller at the 2014 Keene-land January Horses of All Ages Sale was Phonybooksnrecords. Thomas Clark Blood-stock, agent, paid $190,000 for the 4-year-old daughter of leading sire Tapit.

A Maryland native, McDonald holds a de-gree in animal sciences from Cornell University and worked at vari-ous Maryland racetracks as an exercise rider and assistant trainer. He was an officer of Fasig-Tipton Company Inc. prior to buying Eaton Sales.

Eaton Sales served as agent for the dis-persal of the W.T. Young family’s Overbrook Farm, which in 2009-2010 sold 205 horses for $38,606,000. At the time, the dispersal was the second largest in Keeneland sales history. It is now third behind the Edward P. Evans Spring Hill Farm dispersal, which sold 221 horses for $62,364,000 million in 2011-2012, and the Nelson Bunker Hunt disper-sal, which sold 580 horses for $46,912,800 in 1988.

In 2000, Eaton Sales, agent, sold the highest-priced horse in the history of the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale when Britton House Stud Ltd. paid $5 mil-lion for Grade 3 winner Mackie. The daugh-ter of Summer Squall is out of Broodmare of the Year Glowing Tribute, dam of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Sea Hero, and was sold in foal to Mr. Prospector.

At the 2014 January Sale, Eaton Sales, agent, sold the Rock of Gibraltar mare Sweeter Still (IRE) for $750,000, the co-sec-ond highest price of the sale. The 9-year-old mare was purchased by Royal Oak Farm, agent for Phyllis Wyeth of Chadds Ford Stable, in foal to Galileo (IRE).

Cauthen is a third-generation Kentucky horseman whose brothers are Racing Hall of Fame jockey Steve Cauthen and bloodstock adviser Doug Cauthen. An attorney, he previously worked as counsel and bloodstock adviser at Wal-mac Farm, which Jones developed into an international stallion station with such lead-ing sires as Nureyev, Miswaki and Alleged.

In 2005, Jones sold Walmac to his son, John T.L. Jones III, and Robert Trussell and remains as Director Emeritus.

Kenny honed his bloodstock skills in Canada and California before moving to Kentucky in 1993. He purchased future Broodmare of the Year In Neon for John Franks and bought the dams of champions Chilukki and Phantom Light prior to their stakes-producing success.

Greathouse, who died Oct. 8, 2013, was a prominent horseman who helped run his family’s Glencrest Farm near Midway, Ky.

At the 2014 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, Four Star Sales was agent for the estate of David Greathouse. Its high seller was Auspiciously, a 6-year-old Malibu Moon mare in foal to Bodemeister pur-chased for $205,000 by Coronation Invest-ments. Germaniac and El Jader, both stakes winners of 2014, were consigned by Four Star Sales to the January Sale.

Background: Locat-ed on Paris Pike near Lexington, Gainesway is a 1,500-acre, full-service Thoroughbred farm that is home to seven stallions led by record-breaking sire Tapit.

Gainesway was founded by John R. Gaines, who was famous for his innovations in the Thoroughbred in-dustry, including the concept that became the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. In 1989, Graham J. Beck, a successful business-man, wine maker, and Thoroughbred horse-man in his native South Africa, purchased the farm from Gaines.

Beck died in July 2010. Today, his son, Antony, oversees farm operations as presi-dent. The younger Beck’s involvement in the industry includes serving on the board of di-rectors of Breeders’ Cup Ltd.

Gainesway includes two historic opera-tions, Greentree Stud and the C.V. Whitney farm. Beck and his wife, Angela, have nur-tured Gainesway into a facility known for more than Thoroughbreds. An emphasis on trees and spectacular gardens helped the farm earn official status as an arboretum from the American Public Garden Associa-tion.

At the 2014 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale Gainesway’s high seller was a $225,000 Malibu Moon colt. The yearling was purchased by Maverick Racing.

Sikura was men-tored by his father, the late John Sikura, Jr., a Canadian entrepreneur and founder of Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Ontario. The younger Sikura grew up attending the sales and races with his father, and he learned the business while working at Hill ‘n’ Dale’s Kentucky division in the 1980s.

Following the death of his father in 1994, Sikura began to build the Kentucky farm into a prominent breeding and sales opera-tion. Today, Hill ‘n’ Dale encompasses 1,300 acres and stands 11 stallions, including Mid-night Lute and Stormy Atlantic. The farm is the final resting place of 1977 Triple Crown winner and leading sire Seattle Slew.

At the 2007 Keeneland November Breed-ing Stock Sale, Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent for Swettenham Stud, sold the highest-priced horse in the sale’s history – Playful Act (IRE) – for $10.5 million. The amount is the third-highest price ever paid for a horse at any Keeneland sale.

At the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, has sold the sale-topping horses six times since 2004. Last year Hill ‘n’ Dale sold three six-figure mares, including Louvakhova for $425,000 and Unbridled Belle for $400,000.

A lifelong horseman, the elder Farish bought his first Thoroughbred at the 1963 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Since then, he has campaigned more than 165 stakes winners and bred more than 290 stakes winners, including Horses of the Year Mineshaft (2003) and A.P. Indy (1992). Farish won the Eclipse Award as leading breeder in 1992 and 1999.

At Keeneland, Lane’s End handled the highest-grossing Thoroughbred dispersal in North American history as agent for the Edward P. Evans Spring Hill Farm dispersal. The dispersal sold 221 horses for $62,364,000 million in 2011-2012. One of them was the weanling Medaglia d’Oro filly Miss Besilu, who brought a then-North American record $2.6 million when she was sold to Besilu Stables.

Lane’s End also was agent for the Com-plete Dispersal of Saud bin Khaled’s Palides Investments N.V., Inc. in 2011. The dispersal sold 40 horses for $17,926,500 at the Keene-land September Yearling Sale.

The elder Farish has served on Keene-land’s Board of Directors since 1985. In Oc-tober 2006, he succeeded James E. (Ted) Bassett III as a Keeneland Trustee.

Bill Farish’s involvement in the industry includes serving as Chairman of the Board of Breeders’ Cup Ltd. He also races horses and in 2005 founded Woodford Racing LLC, a partnership that includes friends and others he has introduced to Thoroughbred racing.

Lane’s End has sold three of the 10 high-est-priced broodmares in the history of the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. In 2000, Lane’s End, agent for Brookside Farms, sold Claxton’s Slew, in foal to Storm Cat, for $3.3 million to John Magnier and as agent for Brookside Farms sold Solar Slew, in foal to Deputy Minister, for $2.8 million to Lakland LLC. In 1979, Bell found-ed Nicoma Bloodstock. The agency is named for Nicoma, one of the first mares Alice Chandler purchased after she created Mill Ridge Farm from 286 acres she inherited upon her father’s death in 1962. (Her father, Hal Price Headley, was co-founder and in-augural President of Keeneland.) Nicoma produced five stakes winners, and her sale enabled Chandler to develop Mill Ridge into a top breeding and sales operation.

Mill Ridge has bred or raised such top-flight horses as 1968 Epsom Derby (G1) win-ner Sir Ivor; 2001 Horse of the Year Point Given; 2008 Toyota Blue Grass (G1) winner Monba; 2005 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Giacomo; and 2004 champion filly Sweet Catomine.

In 2009, Alice Chandler received the Eclipse Award of Merit for a lifetime of out-standing achievement in Thoroughbred rac-ing.

At the 2014 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, Mill Ridge Sales, agent, con-signed the 12-year-old Dynaformer mare Rietondale. In foal to Candy Ride, the half- or full-sister to four stakes winners was pur-chased by Glen Hill Farm for $300,000.

Taylor Made was founded as a board-ing operation in 1976 by Duncan Taylor, the eldest son of noted horseman Joe Tay-lor who was 19 years old at the time. Joe Taylor, an acknowledged authority on Thor-oughbred breeding, developed John Gaines’ Gainesway Farm into a leading stallion farm during his 40-year management.

Taylor Made quickly evolved into a full-service breeding and sales facility. Duncan serves as the operation’s president and CEO. He is joined by his brothers Ben (stallions), Frank (boarding), and Mark (marketing and public sales). Pat Payne (sales) is also a part-

Represented by its first Keeneland consignment in 1978, Taylor Made has sold more than $1.6 billion in Thoroughbreds. Fu-ture champions sold at the September Yearling Sale are Anees, Farda Amiga and Ashado. Sold as a yearling for $170,000, Ashado brought $9 million -- a world record for a broodmare prospect -- when Taylor Made consigned her to the 2005 Keeneland No-vember Breeding Stock Sale. The amount is the seventh-highest price ever paid for a horse at any Keeneland sale.

At the 2002 January Sale, Taylor Made, as agent for Norfields, sold Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner Desert Stormer, in foal to Kris S., for $3.6 million. The price is the sec-ond-highest ever paid for a horse at the sale.

Adena Springs has a 2,400-acre farm near Paris, Ky., that will stand eight stallions in 2015, including 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Awesome Again and his Breed-ers’ Cup classic-winning son, Racing Hall of Famer Ghostzapper. The operation has

Background: Leonard H. Lavin, who turned 94 in October 2014, has enjoyed a long and successful involvement in Thoroughbred racing while reaching the heights of the business world.

After serving in World War II, Lavin ac-quired a small regional maker of beauty supplies in his native Chicago in 1955 and parlayed it into the Alberto-Culver Co. The international Fortune 1000 company, which produces and markets well-known consum-er brands in the toiletry, household and food fields, includes Sally Beauty Co., the world’s largest distributor of professional beauty products.

In 1966, Lavin purchased the former Greentree Stud property near Ocala, Fla., and established Glen Hill Farm. One of Glen Hill’s most successful runners was Relaunch, a multiple Grade 3 winner who became a successful sire. Among Relaunch’s noted off-spring is Glen Hill homebred One Dreamer, who won the 1994 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1).

One Dreamer was trained by Tom Proc-tor, whose brother, Hap, manages Glen Hill. The Proctors’ father, Willard, began train-ing the Glen Hill horses in the 1960s. For Glen Hill, Tom Proctor trained Grade 1 win-ner Marketing Mix, a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro who earned $2,015,893. Glen Hill bought Marketing Mix for $150,000 at Keene-land’s 2009 September Yearling Sale.

In April 2008, Lavin’s grandson, Craig Ber-nick, took over the reins of Glen Hill, becom-ing its president and CEO. Glen Hill runners earned a record $2,204,992 in 2013.

A two-time Horse of the Year in Japan, Deep Impact is the sire of 2014 Dubai Sheema Classic Presented by Longines (G1) winner Gentildonna.

The Yoshidas’ grandfather Zenuske Yo-shida was one of the first Japanese to import Thoroughbreds from the U.S. on a major scale. He died in 1946, leaving the family business to his son Zenya Yoshida. When Teruya Yoshida graduated in economics from Keoi University in 1969, his father sent him to Kentucky to manage Fontainebleau Farm, then the American branch of Shadai. He spent five years at Fontainebleau, during which time he spent $100,000 for Northern Taste, a son of Northern Dancer who won the 1974 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp. Northern Taste was the champion stallion in Japan for 11 consecutive years.

Among Shadai’s purchases at Keeneland is Grade 1 winner Ave (GB), who topped the 2011 January Horses of All Ages Sale when she brought $1.4 million. Shadai was that sale’s leading buyer with three horses pur-chased for $2.28 million.

successful in the U.S. Among them is Horse of the Year Azeri, whom Yoshida purchased in foal to Distorted Humor for $2.25 million at the 2009 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Yoshida’s additional recent acquisitions at the November Sale include Grade 1 win-ner Diamondrella (GB), purchased in foal to Distorted Humor for $1.5 million in 2013; Grade 1 winner Zazu, purchased for $2.1 million in 2012; Grade 1 winner Ticker Tape (GB), purchased in foal to Giant’s Causeway for $950,000 in 2011; and Grade 1 producer Fit Right In, purchased in foal to Curlin for $1.05 million in 2010.

In 2009, Yoshida paid the sale-topping price of $950,000 for Grade 1 winner Island Fashion, in foal to Ghost-zapper.

Katsumi Yoshida’s son Shunsuke is heav-ily involved in the operation of Northern Farm and has purchased several mares at Keeneland on behalf of his father.

Among them was Grade 1 winner Unbridled Belle, in foal to Bernardini, for $400,000.) Together the brothers operate Shadai Stallion Station in the name of Shadai Corp.
