    Cover Art

This year’s cover art features international studbook #2116 “Markisa” and her Sumatran infant,

#3595 “Kemala” at Como Park Zoo & Conservatory in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA. Kemala

was the first recorded birth in 2015. She is the second infant successfully delivered by caesarian

section and returned promptly to Markisa for rearing. Markisa has had three pregnancies. The

first resulted in a stillborn after experiencing dystocia. The second had to be delivered by

emergency c-secion. The third (and last) was a planned c-section. Markisa is a wonderful

mother who readily accepts her babies back once she and the infants are medically ready to be

reunited. It is hoped that Markisa will be a future surrogate for the SSP program. Note: The

International Studbook Keeper has a particular fondness for this pair as she cares for them at

    her zoo.

    INTRODUCTION

The 2015 International Studbook of the Orangutan is a chronology of the population of

orangutans (Pongo sp.) in captivity throughout the world, utilizing SPARKS v1.66 software.

This edition of the studbook includes the complete historical studbook listing as well as listings

for living collections current through 31 December 2015, with some 2016 data included. In

accordance with the guidelines of the World Association of Zoos & Aquariums (WAZA), a

complete studbook is to be published every year. The 2016 studbook is scheduled for a tentative

    release of Fall 2017.

Much of the international studbook data updates are based on information provided to the

international studbook keeper by the regional studbook keepers. Please report errors and

    updates to the studbook keeper.

The first orangutan studbook was published by the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in

1970 (data through December 1969), with Dr. Geoffrey Bourne as studbook keeper. In 1976,

authority for the studbook was transferred to the Zoological Society of San Diego, and Marvin L.

Jones became the studbook keeper. Mr. Jones managed the studbook until 1989, when it was

transferred to Lori Perkins at the Atlanta/Fulton County Zoo, Inc. (Zoo Atlanta). In 2001, the

studbook transferred to the Lincoln Park Zoo with Lori Perkins and then returned with her to Zoo

Atlanta in 2004. Ms. Perkins stepped down from the international studbook position in 2006 but

continued to maintain regional program updates until the position was filled in 2008 by the

    current author.

    SYSTEMATICS

Orangutans belong to Order Primates; Suborder Anthropoidea; Family Pongidae; and they exist

in two forms, the Bornean (Pongo pygmaeus) and Sumatran (Pongo abelii). This is a departure

from the previous system which classified them as one species with two subspecies Pongo

pygmaeus pygmaeus and Pongo pygmaeus abelii, respectively. Species-level classification was

advocated jointly in April 2000 by Conservation International, IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist

Group, and the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation. The newer system,

recognizing two distinct species, is widely accepted today by most experts based on genetic and

morphological (pelage color and texture, cheek flange shape and size) data. Some researchers

have also even postulated behavioral differences in the level of sociality between Bornean and

Sumatran orangutans as well, though limited data exist to support this supposition, and may be

more a factor of population density and competition for resources.

Since 2004, three subspecies of the Bornean orangutan have been recognized. They are: Pongo

pygmaeus morio, found in Sabah (Malaysia), as well as North and East Kalimantan; Pongo

pygmaeus wurmbii, found in Central and Southern West Kalimantan; and Pongo pygmaeus

pygmaeus, found in Sarawak (Malaysia) and Northern West Kalimantan. The Sumatran

orangutan remains one distinct species with no subspecies, Pongo abelii.

  • 2015 INTERNATIONAL STUDBOOK OF THE ORANGUTAN

    5

Regardless of whether or not Bornean subspecies determination can be made, numerous genetic

studies (on both captive and wild specimens) have demonstrated conclusively that Bornean and

Sumatran orangutans are genetically distinct forms and should be managed as such. All of the

regional captive management programs have adopted a moratorium on breeding hybrid

    orangutans.

    ECOLOGY

Orangutans are large, sexually dimorphic apes (males ranging from 130-200+ lbs; females 80-

120 lbs), the only Asian representative of Pongidae, and the only truly arboreal member of this

family (although due to their large size, wild adult males of necessity spend some time traveling

on the ground). Orangutans have a coat of sparse, coarse reddish-brown hair (ranging from dark

brown to bright orange); the face is usually bare and brown or black. Sexually and socially

mature males develop large cheek pads (flanges), throat pouches and "mustaches," and adults of

    both sexes are usually bearded.

Longevity in the wild appears to range upwards of 35-40 years; captive specimens have lived

more than 50 years. Sexual maturity occurs at about 7-10 years of age for females (in captivity,

females have given birth reliably as early as 7 years of age), though they typically do not give

birth until about 12-15 years. Males, while fertile as early as 7 years old, do not begin to develop

secondary sex characteristics until about 10-15 years, and are not typically somatically or

    socially mature until about 20 years of age. The ages of reproductive senescence are uncertain;

in captivity, females have given birth into their early 40s, and males have sired offspring into

    their 50s.

The principal social units of wild orangutans are: (1) solitary adult males; (2) solitary adult

females with one or two dependent offspring; and (3) independent immature males and females.

The largely solitary nature of wild orangutans may be due in large part to the necessities of

foraging and the arboreal lifestyle. In captivity, it is clear that orangutans are quite capable of

forming durable social attachments, and of demonstrating an extensive range of social behaviors.

Solitary housing of orangutans, as a direct translation of the social units observed in the wild, is

not a requirement of appropriate captive husbandry; this taxon has demonstrated itself to be

adaptable to a wide range of housing conditions, from specimens housed alone to large, mixed

age-/sex-class social groups. This taxon is perhaps best described as "solitary but social."

The mating system of wild orangutans is polygynous; males attempt to gain access to ovulating

females, who are more proceptive during this phase of their reproductive cycles. Females

exercise mate choice by initiating consortship relationships. Copulation occurs during periods of

consortship between the adult male and female. Subadult males will attempt consortship, but

resort primarily to forced copulations/resisted matings on encounters with females. Gestation

ranges 245 (+/- 12) days. Twinning does occur, but it is a rare event, having occurred in 2% of

recorded births. Offspring stay with their mothers for as long as 8-9 years (thus the long

interbirth interval observed in this taxon); males play little to no role in parenting.

Orangutans are diurnal, and in the wild spend the majority of their time engaged in feeding and

foraging activities; the remainder of the activity budget is composed mostly of traveling and

resting (adult males tend to spend more time traveling than do other age-/sex-classes, due to their

tremendous food requirements). The preferred habitat is primarily lowland forest, including both

  • 2015 INTERNATIONAL STUDBOOK OF THE ORANGUTAN

    6

swamp and dry forests; densities decline with increasing altitude. Orangutans are primarily

frugivorous, but have been observed to eat a wide variety of foods, including leaves, flowers,

wood pith, bark, insects and occasionally birds' eggs and small vertebrates. Because of their

reliance on fruit (a scarce and dispersed resource), orangutans range widely. Home range sizes

vary considerably and seasonally; territory sizes have been recorded from as low as 0.42 km2 to

as large as 5-6 km2, and a wide range of daily traveling patterns have also been reported.

Residents and nonresidents are attracted to local fruiting seasons, and there is overlap between

the ranges of males and females. Population density is tied largely to local habitat quality.

    STATUS OF WILD POPULATIONS

The genus Pongo has been listed as Endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act since

2 June 1970, and has been covered under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in

Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1 July 1975. The IUCN Red List

(www.iucnredlist.org) classifies the Bornean orangutan and the Sumatran orangutan as

“Critically Endangered.” Population trends for both species indicate a continued decline in

numbers mainly due to increasing habitat loss, fragmentation and exploitation.

Historically, the orangutan ranged throughout Southeast Asia (its remains have been found in

Java, Vietnam and southern China) but is now found only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.

It has been estimated that suitable orangutan habitat in Indonesia and Malaysia has declined by

more than 80% in the last 20 years. The principal threat to orangutan populations is habitat

conversion for timber (both legally and illegally harvested), plantations and agriculture -

especially when such activities occur within the boundaries of protected areas. Currently, the

international demand for palm oil has resulted in the accelerated loss of orangutan habitat as land

is converted to oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations. Indonesia and Malaysia are the two

largest palm oil producers in the world and share as much as 80% of the global production of this

ingredient commonly used for cooking, cosmetics, and as a source of bio-diesel. Recent

catastrophic droughts and fires in Southeast Asia have also served to accelerate habitat loss.

Additional threats include illegal hunting, and the capture of wild orangutans for the illegal pet

trade. Orangutans are especially at risk when they venture into plantations to forage for food.

Population numbers in the wild were recently updated. New surveys in previously understudied

areas indicate there may be approximately 14,600 Sumatran orangutans - as opposed to the

formerly accepted figure of 6,500. This does not indicate an increase in population numbers but

rather accommodates that orangutans are now known to live at higher elevations than previously

thought. Current trends indicate that as many as 4,500 Sumatran orangutans could be lost before

2030.1 In Borneo, given the greater understanding of the extent of their range, the original 2004

estimate of 55,000 individuals was revised in 2016 to number 104,700 individuals. However, this

estimate does not accommodate population declines during the period 2004-2016. A revised

population estimate will be published in 2017, and is expected to incorporate a projected decline

of more than 55% by 2025.2

    GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE STUDBOOK

The information in the studbook is obtained from reports provided by regional studbook keepers

and- for facilities that do not participate in a regional captive management program- from update

reports and questionnaires. In some cases, reports are not received, but there is evidence that the

specimen(s) are still present in the collection – these apes are listed as such in the studbook. In

absence of questionnaire or report data, the information presented represents the best of the

studbook keeper’s current knowledge. Corrections and updates are welcomed.

The current collections listing proceeds in geographic order (grouped by institution within

country); see Location Glossary for mnemonic details. A note (“DATA MAY NOT BE

CURRENT”) is made next to any institutions for which annual data was not contributed to

the ISB keeper or Species360 (formerly called the International Species Information

System (ISIS)) and indicates unreliability for that institution's current holdings.

    Scope & Summary

The geographic scope of the studbook is international. The chronological scope of this edition of

the studbook is historical, through 31 December 2015 (with some 2016 data included).
