We tried everything to get Jerry (JR) Ray to relax (short of a couple of valium) but that was a lost cause. Along with the United States, we had shooters from Australia, Brazil, Paraguay and Canada representing their countries. Harry Sharp was the Big winner of this match in Freestyle categories, But I am not going to list them here (too many). Joe Cullison as expected dominated the standing categories. Besides the usual local suspects, Dan Hagerty, Steve Peck, and Eric King, our new IHMSA President, Steve Martens, plus John Richards, Bert Chikazawa, and his buddy, Kevin all showed up. Thanks to all of you for your support of this discipline which is new for IHMSA. It officially begins 1/1/16. Steve Martens won with a nice 37 scoped and 34 iron sights. Everyone in attendance learned more about how weird wind can be when you shoot east down one canyon crossed at right angles by three other canyons each of which can have its own wind cur- rents. At one point the wind held steady for about three minutes, and Eric King became the first person to shoot 5 half size turkeys in a row at 385 meters with a scoped pistol. Unfortunately he did not do very well on the other animals so the 30x40 record set by Rich Mishler more than a decade ago con- tinues secure, but 23x40 really was not bad considering the con- ditions. John Richards turned is a pair of 27s, scoped and iron sights, with a Rampro in 6 Dasher. This proved very interesting because no rams failed to fall despite their being set somewhat harder than topple point as 500 meter rams are set. This proves that if you launch a lighter, efficient bullet very fast, it will take rams over at 500 meters because 500 meter rules do require that they fall for them to count. This issue has an addendum that contains the 2015 East coast championship and the 2015 Oklahoma State champion- ships. It is a separate file. To celebrate the provisional IHMSA sanctioning of 500 meter

shooting, almost a dozen shooters showed up at the Avenal Gun

Club in Avenal, California for the inaugural match. Besides the

usual local suspects, Dan Hagerty, Steve Peck, and Eric King,

our new IHMSA President, Steve Martens, plus John Richards,

Last Presidents Report By Nancy LaCroix

Well, this will be my final report; Steve Martens is now the

IHMSA President. Ken and I had a wonderful time at the LA

World Championships, at match was run superbly, by JR (Jerry

Ray) and his staff. It couldn’t have been better, the weather was

great and many great scores were shot.

As president for the past nine years I wish to thank the entire

IHMSA Board for all of their support. Remember, per our bylaws

the IHMSA President cannot vote, it’s your IHMSA Board that

votes and makes all of the decisions for our sport. So thank them

for all of their volunteer time and give them your full support. I

also want to thank the IHMSA Membership for their support and

believe that means a lot.

It’s on to another chapter in our lives, Ken just had surgery last

Friday, 9-11-15 for an aorta aneurysm, as he puts, it, they plugged

the hole and he is recovering at home. They did not have to do a

full open surgery so his scars are small. Thanking God that they

found it at a routine checkup. His father and grandfather both had

it and since he was in good health it was never a question.

Thanks to Cindy Smith and Dan Hagerty for taking over the HQ

and Editors positions. Remember they are volunteers, so don’t

get your undies in bunch too much.

Your New President’s Report – Steve Martens

I'm your new president and first I'd like to thank the members

for supporting me. Another thanks goes out to Nancy for her

years as the past president. I'm looking forward to working with

Dan, Cindy and the board as we work to make IHMSA a better

organization.

A little background on me for those who don't know. I started

shooting silhouette in the early 80's. I started with the NRA SB

Hunter Pistol and then started shooting both SB and High Power

rifle silhouette games. In Minnesota the ranges stopped shooting

NRA and switched to IHMSA in the 90's. My first Internationals

was the last one held at Oak Ridge, TN. I also make aftermarket

sights for airguns and peep on peep sights for standing ( a shame-

less plug) .

As I come into the presidency as a competitor, my emphasis will

be on promoting the shooters and pushing forward the limits of

handgun accuracy. An example of this is that next year IHMSA

will officially recognize the Ultra 500 meter handgun silhouette.

This a great game and another example of the amazing things our

members can do with a handgun.

Wildcat Corner

By Tom Acheson

…………………………………………………………………………………

Sometimes we just plain outsmart ourselves!

My Big Bore Production and Standing gun is an RPM XL Hunter cham-

bered in 30 Silhouette. The case is a 223 necked up to .30 caliber using

Lapua 223 Match cases. This is an early silhouette chambering from

“back in the day” and in 2007 I decided I just needed to try it. The Un-

limited gun is an XP-100 in the same 30 Silhouette chambering that was

assembled in 2012. The same reamer was used for both guns. And both

barrel twist rates are the same 1:10. The reloading dies used for both

guns are the same set of dies. The barrel on the RPM is a factory barrel

and the XP-100 has a Midway Adams + Bennet barrel.

So I found two loads that work well in the RPM, both with cast bullets.

One bullet is an LBT weighing 173-grains and the other is a Heavy Met-

als bullet weighing 160-grains. Both loads use SR 4759 powder. At 50

and 100-yards they both group well and the RPM has a Bomar rear sight.

Here comes the “outsmarting”. Since a load shoots well in the 10 ½” bar-

reled RPM, it has to do well in the longer barreled XP-100, right? Nay,

nay! The “normal” load in the XP-100 is the same LBT cast bullet using

25.0 grains of VV N-135 powder. 10-round groups with this load in the

XP-100 hover around 1 MOA. The favored RPM 10-round group loads

shot from the XP-100 were easily 2 ½-3”. Even with the Weaver 36X

scope on the XP-100, the groups were lousy. The recoil was appreciably

less in the XP-100 (but it does weigh less at 7-pounds vs. 4-pounds in the

RPM).

My goal was to find a good load that has a lower level of felt recoil for

the XP-100. The two RPM loads are a bit “snappy” in the RPM and I

expected the recoil in the XP-100 to be at a lower level. So the “goal”

was met. But the results on the target were not acceptable.

This little experience reinforces the old saying that “every gun is an ani-

mal unto itself”. No matter how similar the components and load are,

things are going to be different!

This winter the XP-100 will possibly be getting a new barrel and proba-

bly a chambering different than .30 caliber. I own (14) .30 cal. moulds

and that is the appeal to many cast bullet shooters….the large variety

of .30 cal. cast bullet molds out in the marketplace. But….there is a nice

quantity of custom bullet makers who can make whatever you can draw-

up and describe to them. So I expect to have some FUN doing the re-

search to determine what chambering should be tried next!

THE NEW SILHOUETTER

Bass Pro Shops and Newly Discovered Trap

Range

By Ken Horowitz

I was pleasantly surprised at the fully

stocked shelves of ammo on a recent trip to the

new Bass Pro Shops in Atlantic City, New Jer-

sey. I was staying in the area in Galloway

Township, about 10 miles away and I just had to

see what struck me as a peculiar place to choose

for a store site. Like all Bass Pro shops I've vis-

ited (Virginia, South Carolina and Florida), this

one was a nice place to go and it sure beat the

pants off spending time in the outlet shops right

across the street this time.

While the photo I had seen in a local

newspaper showed what looked like throngs of

people on the grand opening of the store, the

activity on the day I went was pretty quiet, with

perhaps more sales associates than potential cus-

tomers. As of now, this is the closest Bass Pro

shop to where I live (although an even closer

one has been announced for future develop-

ment) and I hope there is sufficient traffic to

keep it alive. All the previous shops I visited

were along heavily trafficked highways or in

more deeply populated areas. With Atlantic

City on its current decline and with the shop lo-

cation not somewhere where a lot of people

might casually be passing on an interstate, I

wonder what the thought process was on this

one. Nevertheless, I do wish it well and I'm

sure I'll be back there since I do have occasion

to travel to Galloway Township several times a

year.

There was lots of ammo here. With the

exception of 22LR, all common and some not so

common cartridges and shot shells were in plen-

tiful supply. Of course, there wasn't everything

in every brand, but there never is or has been.

With the exception of my specialty IHMSA car-

tridges that are not being offered by any factory

currently, I could have bought something for

everything I shoot. There was even a moderate-

ly impressive (for a big box store) selection of

reloading components.

When I was heavily into fishing years

ago, Bass Pro Shops was my go to source for

just about anything I couldn't find in a local bait

and tackle shop. I think it may have been my

first mail order experience after getting the idea

from one of my brothers. I'm talking paper or-

der forms here, pre-internet. I still have lots of

unopened stuff that just seemed like a good idea

or was a tremendous bargain. When I abruptly

gave up most fishing due to its conflict with lei-

sure time for shooting some 20 odd years ago,

friends and family were the beneficiaries of

most of my stockpiles. Luckily, I still have

enough stuff to get me started now that my

grandchildren have shown an interest in pulling

fish out of the water. However, with a walk-in

Bass Pro Shop within driving distance, I can

now just toss new items into a real shopping

basket instead of an internet cart.

Besides the firearms, ammo and other

accoutrements of our sport, Bass Pro Shops is

just a fun place to be. Every one I've visited has

a huge fish tank, and this one was no exception.

Trout the size that make you drool were over-

shadowed by a sturgeon that kept meandering

back and forth in the tank. They even have

some oversized chairs in front of the tank if any-

one in your party cares to sit a spell while you

look around the rest of the store.

The boats are always fun even if not in

the market for one. Whether you're looking at a

basic bass boat, ocean capable Boston Whaler

type or a pontoon party barge, every one of

them impresses. While I'm not into camping, I

do like a lot of the cooking hardware for my

own backyard deck. The selection of smoking

woods is incredible (although I do always come

back to basic hickory no matter what other

wood I try). I still keep avoiding buying a tur-

key fryer but the selection was awfully tempt-

ing.

My thoughts on the turkey fryer are that

tossing something that large into boiling oil is

not a good idea. Sure, it needs to be defrosted

and gently lowered, but I can just see the spat-

tering and other bad things - call me chicken (or

turkey). The more important holdback is that I

know how much I'll like it that we'll be frying

things to excess. Someone had given us a Fry-

Baby as an engagement gift. It wasn't the first

thing we used when we got settled, but once the

ease of use was there we were having fries and

other delicious goodies practically every night.

I also gained a ridiculous amount of weight dur-

ing my first six months of marriage. It's getting

too easy to put it on and too difficult to lose it,

so I don't want to be tempted by having the ease

at my fingertips.

Having fried turkey periodically would-

n't be bad and I've offered several friends of

ours that I will purchase a turkey fryer for them

and they can do the frying and we'll come over

for dinner. No one has taken me up o my offer

yet. (I guess we all got Fry-Babies or maybe

even a larger Presto product back then.)

Back to shooting stuff at the Atlantic

City Bass Pro Shop, there was even a decent

selection of firearms, both long gun and hand-

gun. This is especially welcome since the offer-

ings in more general sporting goods stores such

as Dick's and Sports Authority are getting pretty

skimpy. There is a Sports Authority in my

Township that doesn’t have firearms at all. I've

yet to find a local Wal-Mart that has any fire-

arms (it makes it more pleasant to visit out-of-

area Wal-Marts that do have them). As more

dealers disappear, it's refreshing to have a new

presence, even if it's one that I can only frequent

several times a year.

Speaking of new presence, there has

been an announcement of a new indoor range

just over the Township/County line where I live.

While my indoor range shooting is self limited,

it is still great news that a new range will be

coming soon. Also good news is that it will be

attached to a gun shop. While big box stores

like Bass Pro Shops are great to have, the per-

sonal touch of a local dealer is a becoming a

shrinking commodity.

Once I heard about this coming indoor

range, I Googled it for info. Entering the inter-

net abyss, I started following links after learning

what I could about the construction plans and

status of the new facility. You know how it is;

one link leads to another and another and then,

much to my surprise, I found a trap club that

was open to the public on particular days, a

mere 4.18 miles from my house! What? I've

been living here going on 35 years this coming

August and I'm just discovering a new place to

shoot?

When I first moved here there was a

public range maybe a mile or so as the crow

flies. During Fall and Winter when foliage does

not absorb any sounds reports of distant guns

being fired were regular. That facility, now

gone, had a 100 yard rifle range (bench only),

60 feet pistol range (standing only) and a regula-

tion clays area for trap, as I remember, and

probably skeet as well. I went there a few times

and then stopped because the facility was less

than satisfactory and there were some cranky

people there. Still, when the range closed I was

not happy.

When I discovered a new (for me, that

is) trap range so close to me, I was excited. As

it turns out, it is in the same township that the

new indoor range is planned. It's down a road I

have never had reason to go, off of one that I

occasionally drive. It's a good thing I saw a pic-

ture of the entrance because when I visited the

range this past Fathers' Day, I passed it by a car

length or two before I saw the sign. Backing up,

I proceeded down the one vehicle width road

and came to rest at the trap range.

I shot two rounds and was back home in

plenty of time to go bowling with the kids, then

dinner. The range was plain trap, with up to

three trap houses depending on patron traffic,

run very well and the people, both running it

and the shooters, were nice and they shot safely.

That's my kind of range and my new find had

me back there for another couple of rounds the

following Wednesday. It will surely have me

back there on a regular basis starting this Fall.

It's too hot for me now!

While I've been shooting Sporting Clays

for a while, it's been over 9 years since I last

shot trap. Both my historical score records and

my scores on my two visits can attest to that.

I'm way too slow and simply cannot get over the

aiming technique(s) of shooting rifles and pis-

tols for so long. By the books I know what to

do but I'll need a lot more practice to become

respectable. With such a close trap range, I'll be

able to work on it.

In my youth I was actually pretty good at

trap. My favorite for this was my father's single

shot goose gun with a 36" barrel. It was the

epitome of ungainly, especially against other

more gentlemanly guns on the local public trap

range. Even on a bad day I would regularly be

in the upper teens to low 20s on score. 23s, 24s

and 25s were more typical when I paid atten-

tion. Of course I could never shoot doubles

with it and that proved less satisfying with one

of my father's several pump guns.

Over the years I've shot at just about

every sort of trap range, including Spartan throw

your own places, cruise ships (although it's

called trap it's really just a touristy thing for a

half dozen or so shots) and nice clubs. Perhaps

the poshest place was back in the 1980s when I

shot at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. I

was staying there and noticed that trap was of-

fered as an activity. I called the front desk and

in short order, a limousine (really!) was sent for

me. It took me a few miles to a clubhouse on the

top of a hill. The traps launched clays across

empty air in the direction of spectacular moun-

tain scenery. The trip to this trap range was

worth it even if I had not fired a shot. The loca-

tion was simply spectacular.

Coming fast forward to now, trap is a fun

activity and now that it is so convenient for me

to go down that newly discovered road to the

next town, I'll give it my best.

Even the Match director needs time to relax!

½ and 1/5 Scale Records

September 2015

By Jim Harris

Some terrific scores and new additions to

the records program this month.

Gary Crews show another open sight ½

Scale 40, taking the lead in that rarified

category. In addition, he posted the top ½

Agg for 60-round match and added a 1/5

Scale UAS 60 to his legend. Topping off a

great season, Gary also shot the first ½

perfect 40-round agg of 2015.

Rich Hawkins surprised himself at the

ECC with a brilliant 60 in 1/5 UAS. Sur-

prising, because he rarely, if ever, shoots

this event or gun.

Please welcome young target setter turned

IHMSA member extraordinaire, Dakota

Turk, who, on prompting and supplied

with firearms and ammo, shot a ½ UAS

40, 1/5 UAS 40, and a 500m score in the

20s, all at the big match in Oklahoma this

summer. First time silhouette shooter –

look out veterans!

Congrats on all the great shooting this

summer!

Please let me know of any errors or omis-

sions to the records – a lot has been going

on, and I’m far from infallible!

Rich Baird made the records program this year with shooting a 36 PAS.

Rich is another shooter from t the Pickaway Co. sportsman club in Cir-

cleville, OH. Nice shooting Rich!

Joe Cullison shot scores in the World Championships, that on a convert-

ed basis would qualify for the list, (a 32 Prod and 34 PAS), but he has

already posted higher scores this year. Nice shooting Joe and congratu-

lations on your FP wins.

Shoot well and shoot often.

LEGENDS of SILHOUETTE by the Old Guy Edition 1 is Ted Zysk For years I have mentioned to shooters at matches that someone ought to do a column for the IHMSA

NEWS about the legendary happenings in the long

ago early days of Handgun Metallic Silhouette, back

into the 1930s and even before. A lot of younger shooters got tired of listening to me tell tall tales of how George Washington took time to shoot silhou-

ette with the troops at Valley Forge, stuff like that, but everybody did think the newer shooters would

enjoy hearing about some of the great shooting and occasionally strange events which have happened

since Dave Whitman missed the first meeting to found modern Handgun Metallic Silhouette. By the

way, one of Dave's achievements will wind up in this column sooner or later. Back in the 1950s he

was one of the best.

There has been a lot of great shooting done down the years. John Dunn shot the world record four gun aggregate of 157x160, but that will be the next col-

umn. The first column will be about something so stupendous, so unbelievable, that if I hadn't spotted

it, I doubt I would believe it. Sometimes I still won-der if it really happened, or I made it up, but then I

remember this was not at some small match. It was at the legendary 2002 Cholla Challenge at the Chol-

la Gun Club in Yuma, Arizona, and it was witnessed

by at least a dozen people all of whom could not

believe what they had seen.

I refer, of course, to the chief claim to fame of the late and much lamented Ted Zysk. Interestingly enough, this is not a feat done on a 200 meter range

but one done on a 500 meter range. For at least two decades handgun shooters had been shooting the

rifle course of fire, and some good scores had been posted. The record at that time for 500 meter iron

sights full size with a handgun was 36x40 held then by Boyd Carpenter. Somewhere along in the late

1990s I started talking about shooting half size tar-

gets at the 500 meter distances, and although initial

response was along the lines of "You must be jok-ing," eventually I convinced a match director to try

it. Rich Mishler, then the best creedmore position

shooter in the game, tried it several times and set the

record at 25x40, and no one came close to that for a

long time.

The range in Yuma is one of the more difficult ones, subject both to heavy winds blowing in off the

North Mexican desert and mirage which can make it nearly impossible to spot, but on this day in 2002

the god of silhouette, who Ted told me was named Ralph, provided us with an incredible opportunity,

nearly dead air and no mirage. To my knowledge it never has happened since.

I thought Ted would try for the elusive 40x40 in

iron sights full size, a feat that continues to escape the best shooters even after 35 plus years and many

attempts, but to my surprise he said, "I want to shoot half size." I took out the scope, sat down on my

chair, and watched while Ted shot a few shots at the

half size chicken swinger. Unlike most of us, Ted relied fully on deltas, the increments from one ani-

mal to the next, which he believed were constant. Once he had hit the chicken, he believed he knew

how many clicks it would be to the pig, and if he

adjusted on the pig, he still went his standard delta

to the turkeys from wherever he had wound up on the last pig.

He got 8x10 on the chickens. Any of you who have

shot iron sights at a half size chicken at 200 meters knows that in order to hit one, you have to hold ab-

solutely perfectly, no wobble, no fuzzy vision, abso-

lutely perfectly. Now imagine what it would be to

hit 8x10 of them… and when you are done move to

the pigs which are not much bigger than the size of

your hand, and hold even better than perfect. Ted

followed the 8x10 on the chickens with something no one else ever had done or has done since.

He cleaned the half size pigs at 300 meters. He got all ten. Yes, he used up the whole target. He even

had one hit half into the front leg. You try it, try it thirty or forty times, and see if you

can clean them.

Ted put in his adjustment for the turkeys, and his

first shot was a foot right and a couple of feet high. I knew that if I tried to walk his sight in gradually he

would waste nearly a whole bank of turkeys, and

that could ruin his attempt to break the 25x40. At

this point comes what I consider the best achieve-ment I have had in 35 years of shooting silhouette. I

asked him, "Did that look good?" and he said, "Yes." I knew the clock was ticking, and I had to

tell him quickly whatever correction I judged to be right. "Down four, left two," I blurted out as confi-

dently as I could. He did not hesitate or chat. He just

took his screw driver and did what I had told him. It was and still is an honor that he trusted me, no spot-

ting board and estimates of proportion, just "down

four, left two." Only one other call I have made

(That will come in another article.) was more nerve wracking. He shot again. The target flew off the

stand, and he went on to get a total of six turkeys. No one ever has gotten more half size turkeys with

an iron sighted handgun at 385 meters.

It remained entirely possible that something could

go wrong, a goose egg on the rams, and the record would remain unbroken, but Ted got six rams, three

and three, so he had the record by the end of his first bank of rams. Think about this. The target is hardly

bigger than your two hands side by side. It is five and a half football fields away. It looks like a tiny

speck you barely can see. A five mile an hour cross wind will blow your bullet at least two and a half

feet. At this point not just your hold and your vision

have to be perfect. Your conditions have to remain absolutely identical throughout the firing period. He

wound up with 30x40. No one else ever has done better than 25x40. It is not even close. This record is

like Don Larsen's world series no hitter or Wilt

Chamberlain's 100 point game. There is nothing else

like it.

I have said this many times, and I will say it again here. If shooting was not a pariah sport to the media,

Ted would not just have been mentioned in Sports Illustrated. He would have been on the next week's

cover, smiling that wry smile and holding his XP in

one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. R.I.P.

good buddy.

JUNE 7, 2015

The man to beat for our June match was Jay Clark.

UAS was controlled by Jay as he turned in the only

smallbore 40X40 for the day using his T/C Contend-

er. Philip somehow managed to miss one target for a

39X40. Jay didn’t stop there. He out shot both Philip

and myself in UASFS using the same Contender he

used in UAS. That’s a leg up into UAS/INT for Jay.

His Contender seems to like the Eley Target that he

used for the first time today. The father and daughter

team of Cliff and Nina Johnson came by with new

matching Ruger Chargers. They each fired an entry

in the new Practical Hunter category and both

jumped immediately into AAA class with scores of

37X40 and 32X40 respectively. I tried my new iron

sighted High Standard Trophy model on the Practi-

cal Hunter Short Course and managed to topple 31

targets. Philip then showed me how it should be

done with a 40X40 with his Contender 22 Hornet.

Special thanks to Jay for staying after the match to

help up pick up and also thanks to my wife Carolyn

for setting targets all day.

This turned out to be our busiest match since we first

started shooting here earlier this year. Twelve people

were in attendance and a total of 22 entries were

fired. The sad news is that only a few we IHMSA

scores. The reality is that attendance numbers are

what keep local matches viable and towards that

goal, I have started offering NRA 22LR Cowboy

Silhouette and NRA Smallbore Hunter Pistol in ad-

dition to our IHMSA match. We also have an

“Open Rifle” category. It has proved to be a plus so

far. On the handgun side, Jay Clark is becoming the

man to watch. He posted his second UAS 40X40 in

the last two weeks and is now an International class

shooter in that category. Congratulations Jay. The

“Tear Jerker” award goes to Will Kirste in UAS who

posted a 39X40 missing his last ram. His wife and

“Team Kirste partner” Brenda fired a 36X40 in

UAS. I continued my struggle with the Fifth Scale

targets managing a 38X40 and then re-entered and

got a 39X40, missing the first ram. In total, 6

IHMSA scores were fired and all the remaining en-

tries except one were with a long gun. Thanks to all

who helped run the match today and endured the

intense heat, red bugs, and biting flies.

In other news, efforts are moving forward again to

offer a Big Bore match once more for Louisiana.

Updates on this as it develops.

Our July match was Independence Day weekend and

we were on the backside of some substantial rain but

in spite of that we had a good turnout. The star again

this month was Jay Clark who seems to have found

his pace. He is now International class in UAS and

he scored yet another 40X40 today, sending him to a

shootoff with my brother Philip Braud. Targets were

five fifth scale chickens at 100 yards. Jay came out

on top and has established himself as a real contend-

er. Region 2 Director Allen Gaskin made the long

drive to shoot with us and fired three entries. Philip

continued to control Practical Hunter Short Course

with yet another 40X40 with his T/C 22 Hornet.

Cliff Johnson topped Practical Hunter 22LR manag-

ing a 35X40 with a Ruger Charger. All together we

had 13 entries today on the handgun side and anoth-

er 8 entries on the Cowboy Lever Action side. Top

score for the rifles was Dustin Flint with a 38X40.

Thanks to Bob, David, and Jay for staying late to

help pick up the targets and rails.

Several hearty souls braved 100 degree heat and

high humidity for our July match. Huge thanks go to

Will Kirste for bringing his generator and some fans

to help in an effort to keep us cool. Van Hutches

continued to gain ground with his Ruger Charger in

UAS scoring a best ever 38X40 with that gun. He

also posted an 18X40 in the Standing category. I

returned my Volquartsen High Standard to duty and

got a 40X40 in UAS. In UFS I squeaked out a

33X40. In Unlimited I fired a 39X40, grazing and

turning a pig which didn’t fall. But for myself, my

biggest accomplishment at this match was to finally

get my first 40X40 in UASFS after trying for so

long. For this purpose I have been using a rear grip

Anschutz with an Elite 2-6X scope from the stand-

ard Creedmore position. This 40X40 has been hard

for me to achieve and I’m glad I had some friends

with me to share the occasion.

In our open Rifle category Debbie Blake had the

high score for the third match in a row with a very

decent 33X40. We also had a few NRA 22LR Cow-

boy Rifle shooters and the scores are listed below.

We have one final match scheduled here for this sea-

son, August 15-16.

In IHMSA, as in our everyday life, there are many

memorable moments. Reaching our own personal

goals is high on that list of memories. But also, for

me at least, seeing a friend reach a hard fought goal

is on that list as well. David Heintz is a longtime

IHMSA member and has been shooting with us for a

few years. David had never shot a Smallbore 40X40,

At least not until our August match, that is. David

started out with a stock Ruger Charger. My brother

Philip advised him from time to time about benefi-

cial modifications and his scores rose. A tip here and

some advice there and we arrived at our match Sun-

day. David started his entry and by the time I

thought to check in on him, he had finished turkeys

with no misses. He waved me off, not wanting to

talk about it and jinx him so I left him to engage the

Rams. At the time I was shooting Fifth Scale turkeys

and I missed my first target. From that point I must

admit that I was watching David as much as I was

my own targets. He cleaned his first bank of rams.

Again, I declined to attempt any small talk while the

targets were reset, honoring David’s request to be

left alone. The “Load” and “Fire” commands were

given for his final five shots and again I watched his

targets as much as my own. I cleaned all my turkeys

and just as my last target fell, I saw David’s last ram

fall for his first perfect score. Congratulations David,

they should get easier from here on out. Allen Gas-

kin came down from Jackson, MS to fire three en-

tries today. Jay Clark was also on hand and fired his

third consecutive UAS 40. Which reminds me. We

should soon start having some interesting shoot offs

in the future with all these UAS 40s, but not today

because Jay had to leave early. Thanks to my wife

Carolyn for again braving the heat to set targets all

day and special thanks to Bob and David for staying

to help pick up the range.

all who helped make our first year a success. We can

It was HOT! But we still had a great turnout

with 14 shooters entering 30 guns. Both Larry Elrod and Jim Bullis got a leg up in SB UAS towards

AAA. Gunner introduced us to a new target setter, Zach who hustled to set the steel under the blazing

sun.

In the evening of June 12th, BCGC had our annual

members meeting with a guest speaker who talked

about the changing concealed carry laws and ways

of stopping an aggressor with firearms. Larry Fun-derburk, a long-time IHMSA member and former

Match Director was able to attend with his wife Faye despite his long-time battle with cancer. He was looking forward to attending the match on Saturday.

Unfortunately, that was the last time many of us had

the opportunity to talk with him. On Sunday June

21, Larry passed away. Larry, as the IHMSA Match Director at BCGC, introduced me to IHMSA and

competitive shooting in South Carolina. He will be

remembered fondly by all who knew him and he will

be missed.

The day started out mild but humid and with no breeze. As the temperature started to rise, fortunate-

ly, the breeze kept it bearable until early afternoon. Target setters Gunner and Zach did a great job keep-

ing the match moving. There were 8 members who

entered 13 guns and we had 2 guests, a father and

son, who practiced at the chickens. One went through the line with Larry's Anshutz. We hope

they come back next month.

We Finally had good wether and good shooting for a

change with just over 30 entries for our May match.

Emery Adanich mad the long trek to Bellefontaine

this month and had a chance to shoot a few guns

with us.

Several good scores were fired but only a couple of

40x40’s. Dave Calloway shot a great 40 in Small-

Bore UAS and Lynn Shultz shot the only Big Bore

40 the hard with his Iron sight 308 and cast bullets,

Great shooting guys.

We had a very light turn out for our June match with

temps on the 60’s. The wind, rain and poor light all

day made for very difficult shooting conditions.

Gordon Lash shot the only iron sight 40 for the

match despite the rain and low light he was able to

pull it off, Great shooting Gordon.

We had several shooters drive some distances but

decided to shoot only one or two guns and call it a

day. We ended up wrapping up the match a little

earlier than normal and as luck would have it rained

hardest while we were tearing down the range so a

big thanks to all who helped out and got wet, hope-

This month was the opposite of last month. Only 9

shooters and we had 21 entries. The highlights were

a perfect score by Dave Calloway with 7 shootoffs.

Carl Skidmore was back in the Presidents 60 club

with a nice 29 Prod and a 33 PAS for a 62 Agg. It

was really good to see Bob Half come out and shoot

one with the trusty old Buckmark. Rich Baird con-

tinued his assault on the perfect fifth scale score

racking up two more 39’s. Steve Powell is knocking

on the door of INT class in Field Pistol (I taught him

everything). Doug is perfecting his charger for flop

and it will be a force to be reckoned with. Bill and

Gordon went head to head in SB Prod with respecta-

ble 38’s. Bill edged Gordon by shooting 8 shootoffs.

Thank you all for helping me set up and tear down.

We dodged the rain off and on all day but overall a

nice day.

One thing we guarantee about the Circleville match-

es is that the weather will be nice! We had stunning

perfect weather and excellent conditions. Highlights

were the Herron Brothers duking it out in SB UAS.

Little brother Jeremiah Eked out the win by one tar-

get. It was a good competition to watch. They spot

for each other and are very competitive! Frank Hoi-

tzhauer stopped by to shoot a couple and we hadn’t

seen him in a while. Carl Skidmore continued his

string of 60 club scores with a 31 PAS and a 29

Prod. Bill did a trigger job for him so I expect there

will be even more to come this year. However, John

Maple smoked in FP PAS with a 33 and 2 shootofs

beating everyone! Bob Hall visited again and it was

good to see him. He looked better and his score

showed he feels better. He hit 8 turkeys in the leg

and I know that because I set them up. Windage is

everything. Dave shot almost identical 39’s in UAS

to lead the pack in SB. Thanks to all who helped

setup and tear down and that was almost everybody

and thanks to Doug Lash for bringing the lunch.

We had some really great scores turned in at this

match starting with Gordon Lash in SB UAS with a

perfect 50. He ran all the shootoffs for a 40 and 10.

Gordon Also edged Carl Skidmore by one in SB US.

On the other side of the match Carl got Jim Kesser

by one in FP Prod and turned in a good agg in FP.

Rich Baird got his perfect score in UFS and a leg

into international.

Rich also got Jim Kesser by one in FP PAS, but the

Agg went to jim with a 63. Doug Lash hit an amaz-

ing 4 shootoffs in FP PAS. Bob Hall and Doug Pe-

ters by to shoot a couple. Thanks to Bill Urbank, Jim

Kemme, John Maple and all that stayed or came ear-

ly to help setup and tear down.

The weather gods were not kind to us today, heavy rain to set up and tear down and showers through the

match, target setters earned their money for sure. Despite this everybody seemed to enjoy the match,

we had not had a half scale match since September

2013.

Tightest competition came in UASHS-AA where

Lorena shot very well and got a leg into AAA with a

fine 37 and Ric Olsen beat Gerald Catt by one crit-

ter!

Only 40 of the day was posted by Howard Sims in

Small Bore UAS, nice shooting again Howard.

This was our traditional “Fathers Day” big bore

match and it was one of the best yet!

All week the so called weather “forecasters” had been predicting showers and thunderstorms for the

day, well they got it totally wrong, sunny and warm

with a gusty wind, never mind the wind a great day

was had by all.

The turn out was good however the number of sons

and daughters attending with their fathers is going

down as they grow up and leave home, we did how-

ever get one son, father, grandfather combination on

the line, and two father-daughter combos.

Highlights of the match were again provided by fa-

ther-daughter combination Pete and Lorena, one ani-mal separating them in Small Bore Unlimited AAA

and a 40X40 tie in Big Bore UAS INT. Fittingly for

Father’s Day Pete took the one critter honours in SB

and got 4 shoot offs to Lorena’s 3 in BB. This was a repeat of last year’s match! Someone mentioned that it was a Father’s Day gift but anybody who knows

Lorene knows that she just loves to beat the “old man” with his own gun and would never pull her

punches!

This was our first summertime match of the season,

it made 90. We had a really good turnout today with

36 guns , plus one Junior with a rifle. Sam Fields

shot a 32 for his first entry. Excellent score!

There was a tie in UAS that I did not notice until

most everyone had gone home. Kent Lash and Rob

Dunlap both ended up with 40+9 in UAS. We will

sort this out in July.

We just had 4 40’s this month with 2 in UAS and 2

more in PHSC. Chris Dunlap barely to PH with

We missed a few of our regulars this match. Maybe

it will be cooler in August.

Rob Dunlap had a real good Sunday. He shot 2 40’s,

one in UAS with 8 shootoffs and one in UASFS

with 6 Fifth scale chickens at 100 yards. This was

his first in Fifth scale out of AA class. An auto bump

up to AAA with a leg in INT. Congratulations! This

is the first fifth scale 40 in 3 or 4 years here.

The other 3 40’s were in Practical Hunter with Bob

Doherty winning with 40+10 shootoffs and then 7

turkey heads at 100 yards. Good shooting. Chris

Dunlap got 40+9 and Fred Hornbaker shot 40+8 in

PH22.

Sam Field keeps getting better. He shot 38 with his

rifle. Way to go!

What a great match in June. The rain held off long

enough to get in most of the guns everyone wanted

to shoot. We were not able to get in a few shootoffs

due to the rain. Frank and Rafael will shootoff for

Our July match was a good one. Gary Bridges came

to town and sacked up most of the big bore wins.

Joe and Teresa Coleman won most of the .22 catego-

ries. I think that 40 Teresa shot in .22 UAS was her

first. Congrats Teresa, great shooting. The new fir-

ing line cover is expected to be complete by next

month. Thank you to Buddy Rhoads, Frank Davis

and Ken Shilling for their hard work on the firing

line cover. The Texas State IHMSA Championship

will be held at CTSA in New Braunfels September

4, 5 and 6. Hope to see everyone August 8 and 9 to

get tuned up for State.

Great start for the silhouette season with lots of folks

coming out and shooting. Aaron Fansler was signed

up as a new shooter and shot an 11 in Field Pistol.

Not bad since he had a new Ruger Hunter in 44 Mag

to shoot. The Rams had to be clamped by 1100 a.m.

as the usual weather pattern came through. Good to

see the Utah folks and some old timey silhouette

shooters that we haven’t seen in a while come to

shoot. Congratulations to our new Assistant Match

Director, Dave, for capturing both the 3 and 4 Gun

Aggregates. Can’t wait for the May match. See you

What a match. Plenty of shooters and wind to go

around. Nice to have old faces out shooting again.

Shootoffs went fine with Owen edging out Roger for

BB-UAS-INT and Michael besting Bill SR for SB-

UAS-INT. Bob Jeffery brought his cast bullets and

shot well. And if you look closely you will see that

many of our shooters shot in multiple disciplines

which means lots of reloading and packing firearms

to the range. All in all, a fun time. When new

shooter Dave Harmer needed firearms I sold him my

TC frame and 22 LR barrels. Now he is winning

everything and I can’t get my stuff back. I am not

sure that I could even beat him in 22 anymore, good

shooting Dave.

While the wind was howling, we have several in-

trepid shooters taking on 1/5 scale and what shoot-

ing. Michael Sussman is as usual, unfazed by just

about anything and let fly with his Anschutz’s to

win two categories, not bad.

As always, we enjoy having the Utah shooters that

make the long drive to shoot with us. Next month I

will talk about some of our other shooters that are

continuing to shoot well and in several categories.

What a great turnout for this match. Lots of great

shooting, good scores and I lost the UAS-Int. shoot-

gun??? Many of our shooters are shooting nearly

every discipline like Roger Wood (7 guns), Tom

Tressell (6 guns), Dave Harmer (5 guns), and sever-

al others with 3 guns. We are all getting ready for

the 3 day Larry Allenbaugh Memorial Lava Bed

There was some good news for the sin city silhou-

ette shooters this month. Dean Baker is back shoot-

ing with us and he brought a friend who is adding

some much needed excitement to our group. Caro-

line shot some pretty good scores for her first time

and I’M sure she will be dragging Dean to the range

for serious “cheatin”

In other News: Val Shaver, He hummed another 40

with his Anschutz. ANSCHUTZ? Custom Barrel,

Trigger, stock and sigh but I guess we have to call it

something. Debi Wright sand bagged a 37 in UAS

after shooting a UAS 36 in BB last week. Saving the

best for last, Joe Kennedy shot a UAS 38 barely

missing 2 rams. Great shooting Joe!

I know the heat is keeping some shooters away and

others from shooting an extra gun but that’s our

cross to bear. Still no matter how hot it gets—we

never have to shovel it.

Several regular AIR shooters were obligated to other

activities; thus, the turnout was rather slim. Thanks

to Paul for running the match while I was involved

Based on the scores, everyone shot well below their

abilities for some unexplained reason. However, I

am sure Paul relished beating Ron by one target in

It was a far better turnout than last Saturday. Gordy

(the AAA shooter) ended up beating Paul (the INT

shooter) in UAS & earning High Senior. It’s always

fun to see the AAA guy beat the INT guy. Then, to

rub some salt in the wound, Ron took revenge on

Paul for beating Ron last Saturday in US. Tom (for

whom the Wednesday Tommy Gun match is named)

took the USIS title.

ond entry into the President’s 100 Club. Charlie

Dean was our Revolver champion, and Paul Hoadley

took the US title.

COMMENTS

It was a rather small turnout as people were (1)

cruising on a ship off the coast of Mexico, (2) recov-

ering from the Internationals or (3) just considered it

too darned hot. However, those of us who were

there had a great time.

It was great to see Bob Geddis back shooting after a

several year layoff. Hopefully, this will not be an

anomaly and we’ll see him more often.

Doug Hockinson was our Production and Standing

champion today. Charlie Dean had a good day tak-

ing the Revolver, Unlimited, and Half Scale Any

Sight titles along with High Senior. Rick Redd was

our Half Scale Unlilmited champion and missed the

Half Scale aggregate by only 2 targets. He was also

our UAS champion. Paul Hoadley shot a nice 32 in

US to take that title.

Thanks to Charlie, Dave, Paul, and Rick for helping

to set up and tear down the range.

Another fun Day of shooting in North Dakota. A

cool start at 42 Degrees, but only a 10 MPH wind

into the shooting face. But no ran or snow so what

more could you ask for. Dedicated group of shooters

from around the state showed up. Sure would like to

see more! Everyone left with a smile on their face at

the end of the day from having a good shoot. See

you on the Range!

Thanks to Claire, David and Jared for helping be-

fore, during and after the match!

Had quite a storm the night before and had to navi-

gate some standing water the morning of the match.

But had a good showing of ND and MN shooters.

The shooting was hard and heavy. Only had a lunch

break for a stop in action. At the end of the day eve-

ryone was ready to go home with another day of

shooting under their belt. Thanks to all the shooters

for helping in resetting the targets during the match

and cleanup after the match.

Really HOT DAY, for North Dakota, sure put a

damper on the shooting. The bright spot of the day

was having a new shooter that his spotter, Grandpa,

Had a hard time keeping up. But it was really great

having new blood shooting! As always we had fun.

Thanks to all the shooters for helping with match

setup, resetting the targets during the match and

North Dakota State Match

8/23/2015

We had a very rotten weekend for any kind of match

let alone the first state match in North Dakota for

about 5 years. We had rain and then wind and rain

the day before the match making for an interesting

match prep. The day of the match no rain, but 20

MPH winds with gusts ro 40 MPH all day long! Oh

yae, the days starting temp was 48 degrees, and only

rose to 68 degrees for a high. Even with that we had

a nice showing of North Dakota shooters.

Now to the match. Once overyone warmed up

enough to want to shoot everyone shot as much as

they could. At the end of the day everyone was

wishing the match was longer so that they could

shoot more. Maybe the hosting club will allow us to

have a two day match next year. No great scores, but

with the conditions the shooting was good.

It was great having Claire Stoner and David

Hartsoch from Williston shooting. They are loyal

North Dakota shooters that make putting on matches

month after month a pleasure. Jared Richards from

Jamestown has returned from Intl’s and did a great

job of shooting under the conditions. Was hoping for

some support from other Region 8 shooters, but they

were no shows.
