Garden-Inspired Decor Brightens Spaces & Moods

Many homeowners take up gardening to transform their homes with beautiful flowers and foliage, while others do so to yield fresh fruits and vegetables. But gardening can be more than just a weekend hobby. In fact, it may be es-pecially beneficial for homeowners to surround themselves with more plants and natural decor, whether in the yard or in the home.

Studies have indicated that gardening can be good for the mind and body. In addition to improving mood and reduc-ing stress, plant life and gardening also may help people have a more hopeful outlook on life. If reaping the benefit of a beautiful landscape is not reason enough to get into gar-dening, elevating your mood and coping with depression or illness may be even further motivation to start developing your green thumb.

Home-design trends seem to be following suit, offering in-dividuals more opportunities to surround themselves with potentially therapeutic plants. Explore these emerging and established garden decor trends to try in and around your home.

• Living wall planters: A living wall planter can add greenery to any decor without taking up floor or table space. Ideal for outdoor structures, these planters also can be used in-doors if you safeguard against leaks and dripping. A living wall planter is a framed device that houses plants in a man-

ner that enables them to be vertically mounted to a wall surface. While there are commercially available models, you can create your own design and paint or stain it to match the existing decor. Use a soil-free potting substrate to avoid the mess that regular soil may create.

• Combining fish with gardening: Enjoy the best of two relaxing worlds by installing a water feature in your yard. Garden retailers offer ready-made kits that can make fast work of establishing a pond or other water feature in the backyard. Otherwise, there are plenty of water garden companies and installers who

can suggest a design and put in your desired water features. Add fish suitable for outdoor life to your pond. These include koi and certain goldfish varieties. Game fish are discouraged because they can destroy pond plants. If an outdoor pond is more maintenance than you desire, consider an indoor aquarium with a combination of fish and live aquarium plants.

• Creative furniture designs: Maybe you’re a person who appreciates the unique and whimsical? Tables, benches and chairs can be built with planting channels that enable you to have greenery and garden de-cor in one piece. Envision a picnic table with a cutout down the center for a thin row of plants or decorative grasses. This is a project the entire family can get behind, as the more creative ideas the better.

• Improved outdoor lighting: People who like to spend time in their gardens and yards may not want to be limited by sunrise and sunset. By incorporating different lighting sources, you can create a retreat that is welcoming at any hour. Although flood lights and overhead lights can illuminate a space, con-sider ambient and decorative lighting to create the desired am-biance.

• Functional fire pits and places: A blazing fire creates a cozy spot to gather on chilly evenings, but fire pits and fireplaces also can be used as impromptu cooking spots for s’mores or frankfurters on a stick. You can purchase a stand-alone fire pit from any number of retailers or build your own with patio pavers and fire bricks to line the interior of the fire pit. Outdoor fireplaces require more work, and you want to hire a mason to ensure proper installation.

• Enjoyable yard additions: While plants and seating may take center stage, some people still want to have fun in their yards. There’s an increased demand for yard designs and decor that can put the fun in backyard living. Bocce courts, ring- or horseshoe-toss setups, as well as bean bag-toss boards, can be incorporated into landscape designs, giving you yet another reason to spend a few hours in the great outdoors, where you can experience a few healthy laughs in the process.

Gardening and spending time outdoors are great hobbies and may even boost your mood. Homeowners can explore

the popu-lar trends in garden decor and natural ele-ments that they can enjoy inside and out-side of their homes. ~

Despite other intentions, homeowners often turn their ga-rages into storage centers for random, little-used items, leaving little to no room for the tools and even vehicles that actually belong in a garage. Such homeowners may turn to sheds to store their garage overflow and keep yard equip-ment at the ready, but storage sheds are not immune to clutter, and homeowners may find the very structure erect-ed to keep them organized requires a bit of organization itself.

A well-organized shed can save homeowners time and en-ergy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of work gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just what needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of what you have so you know whether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another.

Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment.

Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap wood to use to make your own stor-age shelves or a work bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items.

In order to remember where items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organiza-tion a step further by tracing the out-line of tools hung on the wall so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools are missing and which ones need to be purchased.

Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes

and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they will always be easily accessible.

You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife hold-ers can be mounted to a shed wall to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. Metal funnels can hold twine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser.

Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially danger-ous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe.Make sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the lawnmower, wheelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

Taking the time to clean and organize a shed can help make anyone more productive. ~

How to Cool Your Home Without Breaking the BankMother Nature is consistently inconsistent these days, when 30-degree Mondays might be followed by 60-degree Tuesdays. Fickle weather is often accompanied by large fluctuations in temperature, strong storms and unseasonable conditions, making it difficult for homeowners to maintain comfort levels in their homes.

As a result of fluctuating temperatures, home heating and cooling systems have been heavily taxed. Growing reliance on HVAC systems has also driven up energy bills, as moderate weather synonymous with spring has given way to more days of extreme heat or extreme cold. As summer approaches once again, reducing cool-ing costs is a priority for many homeowners. The following are a few ways to cool your home’s interior without causing a spike in your energy bill.

• Reduce sun exposure. Much of the hot air inside of a home can be attributed to sunlight exposure throughout the day. Walls and windows on the south and west sides of a home will bear the brunt of the sun’s rays, so close shades and drapes on this side of the house to maximize coolness. Shades and curtains can save you up to 7 percent on your bills and lower indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees. Homeowners also may want to think about installing a retractable awning on areas of the house that get a lot of sun. Planting shade trees is another way to naturally cool down hot sides of the house.

• Draw more air into the attic. Hot air rises, and in the summertime hot air can get trapped beneath the roof in the attic and eaves of a home. While an attic should have vents, homeowners can speed up the exchange of hot air with a simple trick. Open up a window on a shady side of the home, and then open the attic door or take out the access panel and place a box fan inside to blow air up into the attic. This will disperse the hot air and help force it out through the vents.

• Use fans productively. Using box fans to suck cool night air in from east- and north-facing win-dows and to push out hot air from west- and south-facing windows is another way to increase

circulation through a home. Running fans may be less costly than turning on air conditioners. Also, set ceil-ing fans to rotate counter-clockwise. This will pull cooler air up from the floor and create a wind-chill effect.

• Switch to LED or CFL bulbs. Ninety percent of the energy used for incandescent bulbs is emitted as heat. This not only wastes electricity but also can make conditions hotter inside a home. Switch to cooler, more efficient light bulbs.

• Reduce humidity levels. Humidity makes hot tempera-tures feel even hotter. Clean laundry, take showers and run the dishwasher at night or early in the morning before the day heats up. Don’t forget to vent bathrooms and kitchens by turning on exhaust fans when water is in use.

• Rely on a programmable thermostat. Setting a thermostat to adjust the air conditioning system automatically means homeowners can keep the temperature raised when they’re not home and then have it lowered shortly before they arrive home. The thermostat also can adjust temperatures for day and night use.

• Keep doors closed. Do not cool rooms that are unused. Maximize the cool air in lived-in spaces by blocking off rooms that do not need to be cooler.

• Invest in more insulation. Insulation does not just keep homes warmer in the cold weather. Insulation also prevents hot air from infiltrating living spaces while keeping cooler air where it’s needed. Sealant around windows and doors also will prevent unnecessary air exchange. ~

The Relationship Between Paint & MoodPainting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. The colors homeowners choose for their walls can give rooms their own unique feel and even affect the moods of the people within them.

Finding the right shade for a bed-room or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first color that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a color that helps you feel good rather than just following design trends. The paint color you pick may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat where you can unwind at the end of the day.

BlueTo create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colors that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. That’s why blue is a frequent fixture in bedrooms and bathrooms. Just be advised that too much blue can make a room ap-pear cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer accents.

OrangeMany people do not immediately consider bright orange for their homes, but when used as an accent shade, orange can really brighten up a home. Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of color with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange is a little too bold for you, tone it down by choosing a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and en-ergizing.

RedRed stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and home dining spaces. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the color may prove overstimulating.

GreenGreen can evoke composure and tranquility and works in any room of the house. Since green is the primary color of nature, it also works well for those people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside and work with the fresh starts and new growth that green can inspire. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, work with its complementary op-posite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance out the tranquility of green.

PurplePeople have long related purple to royalty, and this dramatic color can add a formal, regal aspect to a home depending on the hue. Purple also may help stimulate the creative side of the brain. In paler shades

of lavender, purple can seem almost ethereal and spiritual. Some designers suggest avoiding purple in a bedroom because that is a place you want your brain to rest rather than be stimulated.

YellowFew colors are more vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow is an ideal way to make any space more welcoming and bright. Just use it sparingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Yellow accents mixed with touches of purple can offer the bal-ance needed to prevent yellow rooms from overwhelming residents and guests.

Home decorators should keep in mind that colors can be blended to create the desired environment. A color scheme based on com-plementary colors, or those opposite on the color wheel, may fit. Otherwise, analogous color schemes, or those colors that are next to one another on the color wheel, can create a variation that suits your design needs. ~

How to Handle Weed GrowthHomeowners who take pride in their lawns and gardens know just how problematic weeds can be. Weeds can make otherwise well-manicured and thriving lawns and gardens appear unhealthy and ill-kempt. But homeowners don’t have to sit back and accept weeds as an inevitable byproduct of warm weather. The following are a handful of ways homeowners can handle weed growth so all their hard work is not masked by unwelcome weeds.

• Pull weeds after watering. It might seem odd to water weeds, but watering weeds can actually make it easier to pull them out so they never return. When you pull weeds from soggy soil, you can

more easily pull weeds’ entire root system from the ground. That means you aren’t just pulling the stems and leaves, but the entire weed from the ground.

• Lay mulch. Mulch can benefit a garden in many ways, not the least of which is helping to prevent the growth of weeds. Mulch prevents sunlight from reaching weed seeds, helping to prevent the growth of

weeds before they even appear to cause you headaches. In addition, mulch helps soil retain moisture, which benefits plants as summer temperatures rise.

• Lay landscape fabric. Homeowners who want to do more than mulch can lay landscape fabric in their gardens as well. Landscape fabric will work in much the same way as mulch, blocking sunlight from reaching weed seeds and therefore preventing the weed seeds from germinat-ing. When laying landscape fabric, simply cut holes in the fabric where the plants will be, lay the fabric down and

then cover the fabric with mulch.

• Plant strategically. How you plant also can help defeat weeds before they ever appear. Speak with your landscaper or a local lawn and gar-den professional before planting, asking if it’s possible to plant par-ticular plants close together to pre-vent weed growth. Plants that are planted in close proximity to one another will block sunlight from reaching the soil, which will make it more difficult for weed seeds to germinate.

Weeds are a formidable and unwel-come foe to homeowners who take pride in their lawns and gardens. But there are several ways to com-bat existing weed infestations and prevent their return in the future. ~

OK, I’ll come clean. It is impossible to completely drought proof your landscape. Trees and turf require water. However you can take steps that will set your lawn up to thrive with maximum beauty, regardless of whatever curve nature throws its way.

Central Washington soils fluctuate from deep clay loam, to sand, with river rock in-between. If your Ya-kima area lawn was developed on a lot requiring imported soil, it is most likely clay loam. If you live in the Tri-Cities area, it is likely sand. Clay soil types hold water for a fairly long period of time, while sandy soils do not. Trees, shrubs and turf have the ability to develop substantial root systems that adapt to the soil in which they are grown. Knowing this, we need to do whatever we can to promote healthy, deeply- rooted plants that will optimize your soils’ water holding capacity.

Turf grass-the path to a healthy lawn this summer starts now!

• Core aeration. Annual spring aeration also known as “plugging” will reduce compaction, improve water penetration and increase root growth and depth. To further enhance the benefits of aeration, follow up with organic compost topdressing. You will be amazed at the improvement!

• Fertilization. For turf to be at its best it will need regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer containing Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium in a 3-1-2 ratio. These elements are necessary not only for

color, but also aid the plants ability to resist disease, endure traffic and recover from drought stress. Our summer granular fertilizer is coated with a surfactant to aid in water penetration and retention.

• Insect control. Turf damaging insects such as blue grass billbug, chinch bug and sod webworm typically show up at the same time as hot weather. Damage caused by these insects will necessitate increased irrigation to sustain the weakened turf. Preventive insecticide treatments can be applied in late April through May, or as soon as damage is noticed.

• Mowing practices. There is a direct correlation to mowing height and root depth. Our “cool sea-son” grasses do best when maintained at a 2”-2½ cutting height. Make sure to mow frequently with sharp blades. Never remove more than 1/3 of the grass height per cutting.

• Irrigation. An efficient system conserves water. Make sure your system is operating efficiently, with even water distribution, applied at the right time in the right amounts. It may pay to have your system professionally “audited”, as corrections may be in order. Know your soil type- healthy ma-

ture lawns in deep clay soil should be able to go three to seven days between water cycles. Conversely, turf grown in sandy soils may require daily irrigation in lighter amounts.• Shrub beds. Apply a fresh layer of bark mulch. Mulch retains water, suppresses weeds, and enhances the beauty and aroma of your landscape. In conclusion, although there is no substitute for ad-equate water, we can prepare our yards for periods of drought. The payoff is immediate and enduring from spring through fall. To learn more go to my website at www.coloniallawn.com. ~

Kick-start Spring With a Finished Basement

After a winter of hibernation, spring is the perfect time to con-sider remodeling projects that will help keep your house cool in the coming summer months and reduce energy consumption. An unfinished basement is a source of energy loss in many homes. By simply finishing the space with wall and floor cover-ings, you will notice a difference on your energy bills. A remod-eled basement offers more than additional storage and living

space. It can provide room for a grow-ing family or a space where you can re-treat for some privacy.

Insulation is a key component in mak-ing your basement look and feel com-fortable, inviting and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation like ROXUL ComfortBoard IS against the concrete foundation before you stud the wall. The board is mechanical-ly fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, preventing thermal bridging through the studs, offering a higher R-value and better thermal per-formance. It will ensure your basement is not a source of energy loss, but rather an inviting retreat all year round.

Installation tips are available online at www.diywithroxul.com.

Home improvement projects can add significant value to your home. Yet with so many different options to choose from, which home improvement projects should you invest in? Below are some helpful tips for home improvement projects that increase the value of your home. One project you could do to increase your home’s value is to install energy efficient windows. These days, buyers shop for homes with energy efficiency in mind. Old, drafty single-pane windows are a thing of the past. Energy Star claims that adding Energy Star-rated windows can save you up to $500 a year in heating and cooling costs by making your home more energy efficient.

Many building experts agree that you can expect to recoup 60%-90% of your costs when you invest in energy-efficient windows through your energy savings. You can also receive a green energy tax credit of 10% for this upgrade, as long as you install Energy Star-rated windows. Energy Star estimates that the average cost of window replacement in an average-sized home costs $7,500-$10,000, or more. If the new windows save you several hundred dollars a year, and you recoup a tax credit, you can eventually recoup your investment.

Adding a deck also increases the value of your home. Outdoor living spaces have become more desirable, especially since more people stay home for vacation and are entertaining guests in their homes. Making your deck and backyard more appealing, will make your house more desirable to prospective buyers when you decide to sell. Many experts claim that homeowners can recoup 65%-90% of their investment by add-ing a deck before the house sells. The cost of adding a deck to your home greatly varies. Everything depends on its size, and how many details you want to add; like built-in seating, multiple levels, stairs, built-in planter boxes, and of course the square footage. Decks can cost anywhere from $1,200 to upwards of $10,000, but can signifi-cantly add value to your home.

You can save a huge chunk of the cost, usually half, by doing the work yourself. Keep in mind, however, that deck construction isn’t easy. You will need specific tools, and the cost of the tools can be very expensive, especially if you don’t plan to use them very of-ten. If you decide to hire a contractor, you can often get a quality referral from your local lumberyard.

If your house doesn’t look appealing from the outside, chances are a potential buyer will never make it inside. A good first impression can add five to 10 percent to the value of your home. If the exterior color of your house is dated or fading, painting is an easy place to start your improve-ments. Refinishing your driveway or fill-ing crack in walkways is important before selling your home because this is what leads people to your home – you want it to be welcoming. Attractive, manicured front-yard landscaping will also add value to your home.

With spring just around the corner, now is the time to start planning your next home improvement projects. With some careful planning and some small investments, you can add value and comfort for you home. After all, it’s where you spend the majority of your free time.Article by Tri-City Lumber

How To Close Up a Fireplace For the SeasonA roaring fireplace on a chilly day provides a welcome, aesthetically appealing respite from the cold.

Fireplaces are typically used throughout winter, but when spring rolls around, many homeowners no longer feel the need to light a fire. As fireplace season winds down, homeowners can take the following steps to close their fireplaces for the warm weather seasons ahead.

Begin the cleanup. Repeatedly lighting fires results in an accumulation of ash and residual wood debris. Clean out what you can by hand and discard the soot. To conduct a more thorough cleaning, use a high-powered ga-rage vacuum to clear out any remaining ashes from crevices and other parts of the firebox.

Hire a chimney sweep A fully functioning fireplace chimney should be swept annually by a certified chimney sweep. He or she will remove soot and any creosote from the inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and can cause considerable damage if it catches fire.A professional chimney sweeping also reduces the amount of dirt and odor that will continue to enter a home after the fireplace has been retired for the season. Damp spring weather can moisten soot trapped in a chimney, causing it to smell. Cleaning and deodorizing can help keep rooms fresh.

Ask for an inspection Ask a chimney sweep to inspect your chimney in addition to cleaning it. A sweep can look for leaks and cracks, and he or she should also look at the flashing system and rain cap, which can prevent water infiltration. You donÕt want to learn your chimney is in poor shape during a heavy spring rainfall. Ask that the pipes, brickwork and damper also be checked for functionality and good repair.

Close the damper Homeowners should close the dampers on wood-burning fireplaces when closing their fireplaces for the season. Doing so prevents animals from making nests inside the chimney and possibly gaining

entry into your home. Closing the damper also makes the home more efficient by not letting air escape through the chimney.

Those with gas fireplaces should leave the damper open at all times to prevent a gas buildup in the home in the case of a gas leak. However, homeowners may want to extinguish the pilot light for a gas fireplace in the spring to reduce energy usage.

Make it attractive Some homeowners choose to dress up a fireplace to make it look more appealing in the offseason. Flow-ers, plants, candles, or decorative accents can be placed in the firebox to add style to a home.

When closing a fireplace for the season, homeowners can benefit from hiring a professional to ensure ev-erything is done correct-ly and the fire-place will be in top shape and ready to warm everyone up next winter. ~
