Excellence in Action - James A. Garfield SchoolsOur students are amazing. Academically they

perform at levels that exceed expectations. For years our math and reading scores are among the highest in Northeast Ohio. This excellence does not stop when students walk out of their classrooms. Our marching band is stellar, having won countless awards at both marching and concert competitions. A rich culture of athletic excellence exists, as we have recent state tournament appearances in track and bowling. Deep playoff runs by our wrestling team and basketball teams further exemplify the culture of excellence that is thriving in our schools

Our teachers care. Students put forth the effort, but behind each successful student is a team of teachers who care about that student as if they were their own child. Our teachers are committed to making sure our students are able to have well rounded educational experiences. Many of our staff organize after school clubs or tutoring. If you visit the high

school or middle school after students have left for the day, it is rare to find a classroom where a student isn’t receiving some individual help from a teacher. These are just two examples of how our teachers refuse to allow our students to fail. Success for every student is our goal.

As a member of our community, you should expect to see and experience excellence from our schools. Community support has been crucial to our achievement. Excellence is what we all expect from our students and one another.

On behalf of the students, staff and board of education I would like to thank you for choosing to become a part of excellence in action! Because of this community and our schools, our community is the best place to live, work and learn! Go G-Men!

History of the Garrettsville Area

Home of the G-Men!

It was the July of 1804 when Colonel John Garrett III arrived in this section of the Western Reserve; one year prior, Garrett had purchased 300 acres in southwestern Nelson Township for $1,313. For his $4.37 per acre, Garrett obtained wilderness in need of taming and the water rights to Silver Creek. From 1804 to 1805, Garrettsville’s founder, his family and the Dyson family began to carve the community destined to become Garrettsville from the forest. Among their first tasks was construction of an earthen dam and a saw and grist mill on Silver Creek.

The few mills in existence in the area at that time were primarily for the use of individual families or single neighborhoods. Early settlers who left their grain to be ground at these mills often reclaimed it unground and ate it boiled throughout the winter. John Garrett’s

mill was different. It was intended to serve residents within a 20-mile radius, and it did. In 1805 and 1806 roads were cut to connect Mantua, Cleveland, and neighboring

communities to Garrettsville. Hardy pioneers traveled these roads and paths through the forests from Nelson,

Mantua, Hiram, Freedom and Windham to get their grain ground at Garrett’s mill.

As time went on, a settlement grew up around the mill. Churches, stores and one-room school

houses were built, and the railroad came to town. Over time the little community had growing pains.

One of the pains was the mud shoppers visiting Garrett’s mill had to walk through to get to other stores. To overcome some of these problems, residents of the southwest corner of Nelson in 1864 petitioned the Commissioners of Portage County to permit the incorporation of a one-mile square area “to be designated by the name of Garrettsville.” On September 1, 1864, at a shoe shop, 62 voters elected a mayor, recorder and five trustees. Nine days later, at the first meeting of the incorporated village of Garrettsville, the building of a plank walk from the depot to the east side of town was unanimously approved. By that time or soon after, Garrettsville had become the home of a grist mill, carriage factories, distillery, tannery, woolen mill, chair and table factory. two or three foundries, a saw mill which also turned out rakes, a pail factory and, because flax was an important crop, a linseed oil factory. In 1885 Garrettsville became the first community to pave a road in Portage County when a section of the Main Street business district was paved.

The oldest department store in Portage County, which was to become The Root Store, was founded on Garrettsville’s historic Main Street around 1820. In the early 1830s, a tin shop which added hardware in 1854 was

established near the intersection of Center Street and Maple Avenue. Further developments on this plot of land included Lansinger Jewelry, J. H. Bogrand Dry Goods and Clothing, various grocers, a lecture hall utilized by President James A. Garfield, among other notables, and office spaces, transforming that section of Main Street into what became known as the Buckeye Block. Across the street, a Farmers Bank, founded in 1871, remains today as the Escott Building surrounded by beautiful Civil War era brick buildings.

By 1899, Garrettsville was considered the largest maple syrup center in the world. The man primarily responsible, Arthur Crane, had his cannery on Windham Street. It was his son who founded Crane Candies and

who developed the formula for Lifesavers candy, and his grandson, Hart Crane, who wrote poems now studied on college campuses throughout the country. As the business district developed, so too did churches, schools, public services and service-oriented and social organizations.

Today, the little settlement which grew around a mill lives on, still a shopping center for the tri-county area, still rural in the midst of rapidly growing northeastern Ohio, and still a good place to visit and a great place to live.

To learn more about the history of the Garrettsville area make a visit to the J. A. Garfield Historical Society located in Garrettsville’s historic Main Street business district. The museum houses countless antiques, artifacts, and photographs from around the area.

POST OFFICE BOX 541GARRETTSVILLE, OH 44231

On Saturday, March 22, 2014, “Garrettsville is burning!” was the message that blazed out across phone lines, the internet and news agencies throughout northeast Ohio. Main Street’s newly-renovated historic Buckeye Block Building was on fire at lunchtime. Despite prompt and robust response by local and regional firefighters, the hungry fire had devoured the storefronts from Center Street to High Street by dinnertime — all but the small brick building that housed the Mishler and Kohli law offices. The block of buildings lost to the fire included the Nelson-Garrettsville Community Cupboard, Garrettsville Foot & Ankle Clinic, T&B Tools, Attorney Dann Timmons, Maschek Construction, Shaker Tree, New Hearing, Barber of G-Ville, Miller’s Lawn & Garden, One Real Peach, Shiffer Clock Repair, and Chic and Shabby.About 50 shoppers were estimated to have been in

harm’s way as the fire took hold, but they and shop owners were rushed out of the buildings before anyone was hurt. As the fire progressed Saturday afternoon, crowds of onlookers swelled against hastily-erected barriers. Police and Sheriff’s Deputies kept the public at a safe distance as people took photos and video of the progressing devastation. In what felt like mere moments, over 150 years of history was reduced to smouldering rubble. In the wake of the disaster, our

community and supporters from across the globe united to help raise funds to aid in rebuilding Main Street

through the Garrettsville Area Chamber of Commerce’s #GarrettsvilleStrong fund; and get business owners back on their feet through the People Tree & Garrettsville United Methodist Church’s joint efforts (dubbed MerchantStrong). At the time of this magazine’s printing, nearly $88,000

has been raised through the #GarrettsvilleStrong fund to help defray reconstruction efforts once building begins at the site of the fire. Fundraising is expected to continue through 2015 with sales of firefighter Richard Teresi’s fire documentary DVD, and Pamela Montgomery’s GarrettsvilleStrong book which features the history and memories of the buildings lost in the fire.

…If you would like to hold a fundraiser to raise money for

the #GarrettsvilleStrong fund the Chamber of Commerce asks that you contact Chamber Secretary Michelle Zivoder. This required step helps protect our area business owners and residents. Michelle can be reached at 330.527-5761 or via email at [email protected].

Eagle Creek meanders through a wide floodplain dotted with beaver dams, marshlands, small bogs and button bush swamps, supporting a diversity of flora and fauna typical of northeastern Ohio.

Located on Wheeler Road, Hiram College’s James H. Barrow Field Station consists of a 360-acre parcel of land, with more than 200 acres of beech-maple forest, a cold-water stream, two ponds, old fields of varying ages, young forests, crop fields, a two-mile interpretive nature trail, a waterfowl observation building and meeting center, a lab building with student research areas and natural history displays, experimental agricultural fields and an aquatics building that includes an experimental stream and two containment pools.

Although a small park, 167-acre Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park provides a thrilling experience to visitors with its rugged cliffs and diverse plant life typical of a more northern climate. The spectacular rock formations at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges have become trademarks of the park. These rock formations are among the few outcrops in northern Ohio still exposed to view. Most of the outcrops elsewhere have been covered with soil and rock left by receding glaciers. Nelson-Kennedy Ledges is popular for picnicking and hiking.

As a small community with a big commitment to business support, Garrettsville offers businesses of all sizes the best of both worlds. Every business is a big fish in our small (but very well-appointed) pond.

Retail and restaurant businesses have a variety of districts to choose from so you can place your business in the area that best matches the character of your store, be it charmingly quaint, no-nonsense specialty, or one-stop-shopping. The active Chamber of Commerce and Village event committees keep the Village hopping with festivals, car shows, socials, and expos, guaranteeing a steady stream of out-of-towners to supplement local customers.

Professionals will enjoy the comfortable office spaces combined with easy access to the major courthouses and hospitals and plenty of opportunity to entertain clients without having to battle city traffic to grab some lunch.

Industrial businesses have a place here as well. Garrettsville is an industrial nexus, located at the intersection of two state routes and convenient to the interstates and the Ohio Turnpike. The Industrial District houses the various factories and industrial companies that Garrettsville is proud to host. With a significant labor pool within walking distance, and plenty more just an easy commute away, Garrettsville is a great place for an industrial business to call home. While many plants and factories end up in a

pretty unpleasant environment, you and your employees can step out the door of your establishment and enjoy a refreshing, productivity-enhancing lunchtime stroll on the Headwaters Trail or go the two blocks into town for a meal at one of the local restaurants, pizza places, or sandwich shops.

The area is central to pools of skilled and white-collar employees as well, including Maplewood Career Center, Kent State University Management School, and Hiram College.

Garrettsville’s solid Midwestern values make this a place where you

don’t have to sacrifice quality of life to operate a quality business. Our business owners and employees are a part of our community and we’ll do our best to make you welcome.

Not just a catchy slogan, it’s the truth.....re, yo. can go to any dealership that promises a “great deal’ and “top-dollar for yo.r trade”, b.t what happens after yo. p.ll off the lot in yo.r new vehicle? We’re not the area’s largest vol.me dealer, b.t we have a fantastic selection of new Chevrolet and B.ick models. O.r Pre-Owned .election is made .p of q.ality vehicles that we wo.ld feel safe p.tting members of o.r own family in. The next time yo. walk thro.gh o.r door, yo.’ll feel j.st as appreciated as the first time yo. stepped on o.r lot.

“The best deals, from the nicest people in the business”

We’ve been serving Garrettsville and the s.rro.nding comm.nities since 1957.
