General Comments 1. All spray programs should be designed to enhance an integrated disease management

program. Very rarely do chemicals alone prevent or slow disease to a level that minimizes economic losses. There is no single chemical that is effective against all foliar diseases, which means that a combination of products in a spray program is necessary to optimize disease management. When available resistant varieties should be selected and planted.

2. A spray program should be designed with target diseases in mind. For example, early blight and gray leaf spot (also called Stemphylium leaf spot) are common occurrences in fresh market tomatoes produced in the spring in Louisiana. Target spot and leaf mold typically show up mid-‐season and target spot is more common on tomatoes produced under cover (i.e. high tunnels). Bacterial spot begins to develop as soon as the weather turns hot and humid. Late blight is not as common in commercially produced tomatoes as it is in home grown tomatoes that were purchased from retail. Accurate disease identification is critical to the success of a spray program. Diseases should be accurately identified as soon as symptoms appear so that any given spray program can be modified accordingly.

3. A spray program should be developed to prevent and slow fungicide resistance development. Fungicides that have a site-‐specific mode of action should be alternated or mixed with fungicides with a different mode of action. Do not over use fungicides and only apply fungicides at the recommended manufacturer rates. It is unlawful to apply fungicides at a rate above or below the recommended rate.

4. Spray to protect and not to rescue. Diseases are easier to manage if a preventative spray program is implemented. In addition, fungicide resistance is less likely to develop if a product is applied to a small population of fungi or bacteria compared to a larger population.

5. Spray guides are recommendations only. Product efficacy may vary depending on disease profiles, disease pressure, weather conditions, product coverage and, the presence of resistant pathogen populations. Always consult a product label before applying any chemical. For assistance, contact your parish LSU AgCenter Extension agent or Vegetable Disease Extension Specialist.

Volume-‐based Spray Programs for Fresh Market Tomato Disease Management

The purpose of these programs is to provide a general spray program for managing foliar diseases of staked tomatoes produced in Louisiana. These programs can be altered depending on the disease profile, disease pressure, and weather conditions. The following programs are designed for weekly applications and take into consideration fungicide resistance development, label rates and restrictions, and preharvest intervals (PHI). Labeled product rates are usually listed on a per acre basis, but for staked tomatoes products should be applied on a per volume basis to minimize product usage and maximize spray coverage. For example, early in the season when plants are small less volume is needed to obtain full coverage compared to later in the season when plants are larger. To determine the mixing rate on a per volume basis:

1. Determine the maximum volume per acre that is required to completely cover fully-‐grown plants (typically to run-‐off). This volume will depend on the tomato variety, sprayer type, nozzle size, the number of nozzles and tractor speed. Always calibrate your sprayer before applying fungicides. Most producers calibrate their sprayer to apply 100 gal of spray per acre of mature plants.

2. Mix the acre rate for the product in the maximum spray volume (determined in step 1) that it takes to cover an acre. Spray volume should be proportional to the amount of plant tissue to be covered. Most labels indicate the minimum spray volume required for mixing. If your maximum spray volume is less than the minimum recommended spray volume you should round up the volume to reach the minimum.

3. Apply the entire spray volume to the plants. For example if a product is labeled at a rate of 5 lb/A then:

Basil Fungicide Spray Program 2015 This program will provide good protection against fungal spots and fair protection against basil downy mildew and Fusarium wilt. Young basil plants tend to be more susceptible to basil downy mildew. Begin fungicide applications when plants are at the 4-‐5 week old stage.

Brassica Leafy Greens Fungicide Spray Program 2015 This program will provide good protection against downy mildew and leaf spots and fair protection against basal stem rot and Sclerotinia stem rot. With the use of hot water treated seed and resistant varieties black rot incidence can be significantly reduced. Copper fungicides will only slow the spread of black rot.

• Boscalid has a 14-‐day post harvest interval (PHI) that may interfere with harvest. Stop use when harvest intervals are less than 14 days.

• Switch and tebuconazole have 7-‐day post harvest intervals (PHI) that may interfere with harvest. Stop use when harvest intervals are less than 7 days.

• Zampro and Forum fungicides have the same mode of action and should not be sprayed back-‐to-‐back.

Cantaloupe Fungicide Spray Program 2015 This program will provide good protection against downy mildew and powdery mildew. It will provide fair protection against Pythium damping-‐off and cottony leak, and Phytophthora crown and root rot. Winter squash and pumpkin are very susceptible to bacterial spot. Bacterial spot can be suppressed if bactericides are applied preventatively and seed are sanitized with chlorine bleach.

• Ridomil Gold is not recommended for Phytophthora crown and root rot or Pythium damping-‐off management if resistant isolates are known to be present in the soil.

Pepper Fungicide Spray Program 2015

This program will provide good protection against anthracnose fruit rot and fair protection against bacterial leaf spot, Cercospora leaf spot and, Phytophthora crown and root rot. Many bell pepper varieties recommended for Louisiana have resistance to the bacterial leaf spot pathogen. Planting resistance varieties will reduce the need for mid to late season copper applications.

• Cabrio and Quadris are not recommended for anthracnose management if resistant isolates are known to be present in the area.

• Do not apply Fontelis or Inspire Super to severely diseased crops. Consult your Vegetable Extension Specialist for alternative fungicides if disease is not being adequately managed.


• Refer to the manufacturer label for seasonal restrictions for each fungicide.

Squash Fungicide Spray Program 2015 This program will provide good protection against downy mildew and powdery mildew. It will provide fair protection against Pythium damping-‐off and cottony leak, and Phytophthora crown and root rot. Winter squash and pumpkin are very susceptible to bacterial spot. Succulent Legumes Fungicide Spray Program 2015 This program will provide good protection against powdery mildew, rust, and leaf and pod spots. It will provide good protection against white mold if crops planted in the field previously did not have white mold problems. This program will provide fair protection against Rhizoctonia web blight and cottony leak. Most of the fungicides registered for succulent legumes have the same mode of action. Therefore, the potential for fungicide resistance development in the pathogen population is high. When disease pressure is low or environmental conditions do not favor disease use a 14-‐day spray schedule to minimize the potential for fungicide resistance development.

Tomato (Greenhouse) Fungicide Spray Program 2015 Most foliar diseases can be reduced or controlled by maintaining relative humidity under 90%, by using continuous fans to keep the air circulating and by avoiding water on the leaves. Good sanitation practices are critical to managing Botrytis gray mold in the greenhouse. This program will provide good protection against powdery mildew and Botrytis gray mold and fair to good protection against target spot and gray leaf spot.

• Many fungicides that are labeled for field use can not be used in the greenhouse. Always check the label before applying a product in the greenhouse.

• The risk of fungicide exposure in the greenhouse is high. Use protective clothing while applying fungicides and ventilate well while applying fungicides.

• Do not store fungicides in the greenhouse. • Mancozeb has a 5-‐day post harvest interval (PHI) that may interfere with harvest. Stop applications

when the harvest interval is less than 5 days.

Watermelon Fungicide Spray Program 2015 This program will provide good protection against anthracnose, downy mildew, gummy stem blight, and powdery mildew. It will provide fair protection against Phytophthora crown and root rot. Bacterial fruit blotch can be suppressed if bactericides are applied preventatively. Purchasing certified bacterial fruit blotch-‐free seed or transplants will significantly reduce bacterial fruit blotch incidence.
