'Times gone by on a sticky wicket' by Mike Dartnell

My first sight of the Alder Forest Ground was in 1965 and was very different to the ground we see today. A vandalised wooden pavilion was positioned in the present car park and there was a pond behind the current pavilion and a larger one to the left of the path, both had moorhens and reeds. The roadside had hedges with gaps. There was no security but fine views of Walker Road. Not many mature trees either and the motorway was visible and noisy. The actual playing surface drained badly and many games were lost to rain. The outfield was gang-mowed poorly by the council once a month which left mounds of grass cuttings. The square was smaller and not as lush as today and was tended by a wonderful cantankerous Jimmy Seddon and his 'sprake'.

Thanks to Frank Appleyard we took advantage of 'Plant a tree in 73' and 'Plant some more in 74' and what you see now is the result of about a dozen of us planting small 'whips'. By this time our go-getting secretary Bill Berry had planned and built a new pavilion and caused a great stir by erecting a fence by the road, this caused much dissension. He actually resigned over the matter, but was soon forgiven when security was improved.

'We hate playing on your ground' was said in our early MDCA days. The 'Humpty' plan of replacing the surface of the square gradually with loam was started in the late eighties and the outfield, thanks to added drains and Mike's labour, is now shorter, and faster. The introduction of Steve Oultram as our groundsman was a master stroke too. The ground is a picture now and last years 'Cross Cup Final' was a triumph for the club. The new security fence and electronic scoreboard should be added by the start of next season thanks to Andrew Brown and his grant committee. 'What a lovely ground, I never knew it was here' was remarked by a visitor last season.

‘A review of 2014’ by Graeme Jackson

2014 saw a new era for Winton CC as the club were welcomed into the Bolton Association. It was an entertaining first season which saw both the first and second XIs compete well and the junior section win two trophies. For the record the first team finished a creditable 9th with the second team 11th.

Mike Seenan led the team in our inaugural season. The team were always competitive and were in a position to win most games, an achievement on entering a new league. The second team under the leadership of Damian Grundy had mixed results, they were great one week and not so the next but given the huge turnaround of players this was understandable. Ross Markey led the 3rd team in the retained Manchester and District League. Although the team struggled results wise, given the focus Ross always put on youth and development the club will see the benefits in the coming years.

The under 13s won the league under the guidance of the second teamer skipper and Russ Brown. They clinched the title in a playoff against Walshaw, a team they lost to in the cup final. The team should be complimented on how they graciously took defeat that day. The under 9s winning the cup against Little Hulton on a balmy Monday night in August was a fantastic triumph. Players and fans of both teams a real credit to their clubs and generated a fantastic atmosphere. Manager Pete McDonald looked happy at the end – the smile on his face whilst enjoying his post match cigar spoke volumes. Pete was in charge when I was a junior and he continues to put his heart and soul into it some 30 years later.

It was a fantastic honour for Mike Humphreys when he became Lancashire Groundsman of the Year. It is down to Mike and his team that the club were awarded the Cross Cup Final. A game which saw Bury defeat Edgworth. It was an incredible sight to see the boundary lined with spectators all around the ground. The

Page 15: 2015 fixture booklet

ground itself looked majestic that day and the club members all played their part in making the day a success.

2014 also saw Andrew Brown secure a grant to improve the clubhouse and playing facilities. A huge thanks to Browny and his committee for all their hard work.

So bring on 2015...we are ready for the challenge

The Under 9’s enjoying their success in The Cup.
