Jesus says. GO AND TELL OTHERS. Go fishing. I will make you fishers of persons.
As four of us stood in the sanctuary supervising a change of bulbs in the chancel spot-
lights, I could not help but ask the question, “How many Methodists does it take to
change a light bulb?” Somebody replied, “Who said anything about change?” Of course
there is a more crucial question. “How many Methodists does it take to make a new Christian?”
A friend, who loved to fish, taught me a few things about fishing. If you are going to go fishing, it is
best to go where the fish are. One of the problems you and I have with people outside the church is we
don’t associate with them very much. Who in your circle of friends, relatives, acquaintances, neighbors,
and classmates do not know God and has no church? If you want to fish, go where the fish are . . . get
out of the church and go to the real world. Let us never be in a circle where there are only Christians.
To be fishers of people, we must use the right bait. The right word, at the right time, in the right way,
to the right person, for the right reason, has powerful results. Something like: “What did you do this
weekend? I took care of 15 kids in our church nursery on Sunday morning.” “How’s it going for you?”
Financially OK, the family is doing pretty good, and spiritually, it’s the best time in my life.” That is a
faithful witness. “So you’re new in town. I’m glad you are here. Have you found a place to shop?
Have you found a place to get your hair cut? By the way, I go to church at this place. I’d love to pick
you up on Sunday morning and you come along with me.” To a troubled friend, we might say, “I know
things are tough right now. When I have walked through the valley, the strength of God has sustained
me and helped me there.”
The right word , at the right time, for the right reason, in the right way, to the right person creates a
wonderful follower of Jesus Christ.

Do you have a loved one in hospice care or a nursing facility that

Being sick.
When we are sick, we feel out of balance with the world.
The illness we can be suffering from can be physical,
emotional, mental, or spiritual.
Part of that sense of unbalance comes with the isolation
we place on ourselves to not “infect” others. Being in a
hospital, rehab facility, or a nursing home can be a de-
bilitating isolation. Even if we remain at home, we’re
confined to bed or a couch, as the world moves on with-
out us.
Those who were sick during Jesus’ time, were required
to be quarantined for the duration of their illnesses.
Once they were over their illnesses, “healed” and hope-
fully “cured” as well, a sacrifice was made by the priests
in order for that person to return to the community.
Ritually they were cleansed. These two principles, isola-
tion and cleansing by a priest, were the structure of
“healing”.
What it had become, however, was a control mechanism
that victimized the sick. They were inevitably treated as
second-class citizens because of their isolation. Once
they were well to receive entry back into first class sta-
tus, they often couldn’t afford such sacrifices. Being sick
was a vicious cycle of illness, isolation, and poverty.
I am blessed to serve as your Lay Leader this year. Al-
ready, I am learning so much from my predecessor, Jim
Luther, who has been so dedicated to our church family
and continues this year in important roles of service.
Thanks, Jim.
I have been a member of CLUMC for about 27
years. Our boys were 4 and almost 2 when my late hus-
band and I moved to Fort Myers and joined CLUMC.
Over the years, our family has grown in our faith and
service through our fabulous church.
Please see me at the 9:30 service or call me at
239-565-7058. I look forward to strengthening rela-
tionships with those of you who I know and getting to
know those of you who I don’t know.
Blessings to all.

MARCH CHRONICLE
FEBRUARY, 2015—CHRONICLE ~ Page 3
A man with leprosy came
to Him and begged Him on
his knees, “If you are will-
ing, you can make me
clean.”
He reached out his hand
and touched the Man. “I
am willing,” He said. “be
clean!” Immediately the
leprosy left him and he was
cleansed. (Mark 1:40-42)
Jesus sent him away at once
with a strong warning:
“See that you don’t tell this
to anyone. But go, show
yourself to the priest and
offer the sacrifices that Mo-
ses commanded for your
cleansing, as a testimony to
them.”
Here Jesus declares the
man clean. Taking on the
priestly duty Himself and
does so without remittance.
Healing and curing are two
different things, but both
are vital to the wholeness of
our community.
Doctors cure. They look for
physical symptoms to tell
them what to do.
We all can be healers. We
don’t look for symptoms,
but listen to the stories of
sick people. We, like Jesus,
don’t ask for remittances to
heal. To heal is its own re-
ward.
The leper asks Jesus if He is
willing to heal him. In hos-
pitals, nursing homes, hos-
pices, or in our own homes,
are we willing to do the
same?

CANTATA PRESENTATIONCANTATA PRESENTATIONCANTATA PRESENTATIONCANTATA PRESENTATION
The Chancel Choir will present its Lenten Cantata, SANC-TUARY, by Joseph Martin, on Sunday, March 22, at both the 8:00 am and 11:00 am services. This service in song is a con-templation of the hope we find in Christ. Incorporating new original anthems and time-honored hymns and traditional sacred songs, this work reflects upon the ministry and pas-sion of Christ’s last days. Robert Fredrick, church organist,
will accompany, joined by an instrumental ensemble; it will be directed by Karen Shafer, Director of Traditional Music and Worship.
Rehearsals for this presentation began on Thursday, January 29, but it is not too late to join the Chancel Choir and to sing in this annual tradition. Rehearsals are at 6:00 pm every Thursday, in the Choral Rehearsal room behind the sanctuary. Contact Karen Shafer at [email protected] for more information.

On February 8, the CLUMC Handbell Choir will play at both the 8:00 and 11:00 services. At the close of both services, you may have an opportunity to see the bells up close, chat with current members of the handbell choir, and try your hand at playing a bell. A new handbell choir is being formed, and all participants may progress at their own levels. If you are interested in learning about handbells, call or email Karen Shafer at 239-482-1250, ext. 230. or at [email protected] for more information. Also, we have one opening for an experienced bass bell ringer in our existing hand-bell choir, so please contact Karen if you can fill that spot.

MISSIONS COMMITTEE, David Bowling, Chairman
As the new chairperson for the Missions Committee at CLUMC, I would like to let you know that we are
hoping to send out three mission teams this year. As least one of those trips will be to visit our sister
churches in Cuba. If you are interested in participating in Missions, either by going on a mission pro-
ject or by helping with preparations, please contact me at [email protected]. Also, we are look-
ing to add to our Committee anyone interested in helping Cypress Lake fulfill this Great Commission.
Please take the opportunity each Sunday to check out our Missions and Outreach monitor in the Sanc-
tuary lobby. See what we are doing, where we are going, and how you can be a part of changing the
world for Christ.
