Hancock County Fair Hosts Alternative Poultry Show

By Travis Fischer ere were no birds to be seen, but that

didn’t stop the Hancock County Fair from putting on a poultry contest.

Due to this year’s outbreak of bird u, most poultry shows at fairs across the state were can-celed to avoid potential avenues for the virus to spread. However, at the Hancock County Fair, an alternative idea was implemented.

Rather than bringing the birds themselves, contestants brought in their records and an-swered questions from the judge. Some of the kids even brought in photos of their birds.

“We’re just trying to make the best of the situation we have,” said Victoria Schmidt of ISU Extension. “Being able to be recognized somehow is better than nothing at all.”

e Hancock County Fair was scheduled to have a record number of poultry partici-pants this year, but the restriction caused most of them to drop out. Only six children from three families opted to enter into the alter-native contest. Joe Pringnitz was named the overall Senior Grand Champion while Jade Oberhelman was awarded the Junior Reserve Grand Champion and Derek Oberhelman was awarded the Junior Grand Champion and Overall Champion.

“ ey all did a very good job,” said Larry Eichenberger, who judged the contest. “It was

good to have. It’s nice to keep the kids inter-ested.”

It’s hoped that the disruption in this year’s contest won’t negatively e ect the overall at-titude about poultry production and that next year things will return to normal.

“It’s the rst year for this,” said Schmidt. “Hopefully the only year for this.”

Pet show gives pre 4-Hers chance to shineEmilie Jenson

Even those not old enough to be part of a 4-H club had an opportu-nity to get in on the fun of showing an animal during Saturday after-noon’s open pet show. Kids with animals of all sizes, in-cluding small dogs and guinea pigs to ponies and donkeys brought their best pets to show off their spe-cial skills and personalities. Each participant answered ques-tions from 2015 Hancock County Fair Queen Emma Chizek such as “what makes your pet special” and “do they have any tricks.” Claire Hiscocks, of Britt showed Molly, her dog. “She’s two kinds of dog, that is what makes her special,” said His-cocks. “She’s Havanese and poodle, and she can shake.” Hayden Hadacek showed her dog, Dixie, “because she is my dog and I

love her,” she said. Hadacek said her dog was special because she can pull a sled through the snow during the winter months. Jenna Pringnitz showed Roxie, her Dachshund. She said Roxie lives to go on walks and get dirty, but she doesn’t always enjoy the bath. “We both get really wet” said Pringnitz. Kollin Hanson showed his dog Alice, who is one of his four pets. “I have a cat and two rabbits,” he said. “She thinks she is a cat. She likes to catch flies.” Grace Osteramp came to show off her favorite rabbit, Oreo. ‘ “He loves me and I love him,” she said. Danielle Nelson came with one of the larger pets, her pony Molly. “She’s a sweetheart,” said Nelson when asked why she shows her.
