Aspire & AchieveDurack Institute of Technology is the major provider of vocational education and training in the Mid West, Murchison and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia. Campuses are located:

Durack provides training across an area of over 640,000 square kilometres from the coast to the desert at these campuses.
Qualifications on offer range from bridging and entry level programs through to Diplomas.
Training is delivered in a variety of settings such as online, in the workplace, in schools and in regional and remote communities, as well as the traditional classroom.

Vocational Education & Training in Schools (VETiS)
VETiS courses are designed for secondary school students who would like to start working or studying in a specific field. Students can complete part or full vocational qualifications in addition to their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Benefits include:
- Gaining nationally recognised qualifications and/or units of competency- Developing specific industry and employability skills as well as enhancing life skills and personal attributes- Improving opportunities to gain employment- Providing a pathway to further education, either at Durack or University

Certificates I & II• Entry level qualifications giving you basic employability skills• Usually takes 6 months to complete• Can be a re-entry point for those wanting to return to study or work
Certificate III• Upon completion, you may find employment at junior to intermediate levels• Full time students will usually take 12 months to complete - when study is combined with an employment
program such as an apprenticeship, completion will take longer• Includes trade qualifications
Certificate IV• Prepares you to take limited responsibility for others, usually in a supervisory role• Minimum requirement for consideration of entry into university• Usually takes 12 months to complete
Diploma & Advanced Diploma • Prepares you to work autonomously or by managing others• May provide you with credits towards a university qualification• A Diploma usually takes 12 months after completing a Certificate IV• An Advanced Diploma usually takes 6 to 12 months after completing a Diploma
Geraldton Universities Centre (GUC)
Build on your qualifications... you may be eligible for entry into some university degree programs and even credit towards your studies at the Geraldton Universities Centre.
Their objective is to facilitate, deliver, promote and provide access to university education for people residing in the Mid West. GUC are your first point of contact in the Mid West when seeking information on university study.
Look for the specially marked courses on pages 10 - 14 which can offer a pathway to GUC courses.
Certificate IV provides entry for many courses at the GUC while a diploma may provide up to 8 units of credit. This may save you up to a year of study time and thousands in tuition fees.
Students graduating from a VET in Schools program with a Certificate II or III, may consider building on these qualifications to Certificate IV level to gain entrance to university or ask about GUC’s STEPS bridging program.

Study Mode Options
Full & Part Time Classes
Full time study consists of 16 to 20 hours of classes per week. In addition to this you may be required to complete study or assignments in your own time. Most classes will be scheduled during the day but some courses do have evening classes. Some courses are offered part-time or you can enrol in a full time course but choose to study only a couple of units at a time.
Flexible Learning & Online Learning
Many students are unable to participate in face-to-face classes. Whether it is due to the distance from campus, work commitments or personal preference, Durack can provide training opportunities through flexible learning and online learning.
Flexible Learning allows you to study in your own home or workplace at a time and pace that suits you and your lifestyle. It is a way of studying that allows you to acquire and update skills without regularly attending campus. Opportunities exist in some courses for flexible students to attend workshops on campus. You can enrol in a single unit or a full time course (where available) according to your study needs.
Flexible Learning options may include printed, CD and online materials which are designed to be easy to understand with activities which are simple to follow. Students are supported by tutors and in many regional centres can access the facilities of their local Community Resource Centre. Students also receive support via e-mail and web conferencing and can communicate with other students studying the same qualification.
Open Learning
Open Learning is a mixture of flexible and face to face study. You have the opportunity to mix off-campus study with some units on campus in class, which offers you the best of both worlds.
Employment Based Training
Traineeships:
Generally a traineeship is a structured program for 12 months or more on a full time or part-time basis. A trainee gains work experience with an employer and has the opportunity to learn new skills in a hands on environment.
Apprenticeships:
Generally an apprenticeship is a structured program of 3.5 years that leads you to becoming a qualified tradesperson. The majority of the training takes place on the job with an employer but you will also be required to do blocks of off-the-job training at the Durack campus.
Pre-apprenticeships:
Selected courses can assist in gaining an offer of an apprenticeship from an employer.

Recognition Of Prior Learning (RPL)
RPL is a way of gaining formal recognition for the skills and knowledge you already have. Benefits include:
• Gaining a full qualification or credit towards one• Completing a course more quickly• Gaining professional recognition for skills and knowledge you already have• Improving your employment prospects• Providing a pathway to further studies
Applying for RPL involves:
• Contacting the relevant Durack training area for further information on getting started - see page 19• Being prepared to provide evidence of your skills and knowledge• Your assessor will then explain what you need to provide and guide you through the process
The RPL assessment may differ between different qualifications and situations.

Course Entrance Requirements Most qualifications have entrance requirements. Entrance requirements may be skills and knowledge obtained through secondary school results, other qualifications or experience within industry. Depending on the qualification a level of communication and maths skills are necessary.
When applying or enrolling you will be required to produce material to confirm you have the adequate communication or math levels to complete the qualification. If you are unable to produce appropriate information, the Lecturer will conduct an assessment to determine your level.
Selection Criteria
When a course has limited places, applications are judged against selection criteria. Selection criteria may include work experience, school grades or other studies.
Language, Literacy & Numeracy Support
Adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills are required for successful study. A range of options are available to students who feel they may need additional support in these areas.
There are opportunities to have skills determined including assessment prior to enrolment if you require additional help. You can discuss these opportunities with the Client Services Team or a Lecturer.
Recognition of Previous Qualifications
If you have completed previous studies at Durack, you may be eligible for a credit transfer from your previous studies to your current studies. You can discuss this with your Lecturer.
If you have completed studies at another registered training organisation (RTO), they will be recognised by Durack. To gain your recognition, you will need to provide copies of your Academic Record and Certificate, or Statement of Attainment issued by your previous RTO to your Lecturer.
How to ApplyThe quickest and easiest way to apply for full-time study courses is through Training Admissions. Applications can be made through the Durack website.
If you don’t have access to the internet, visit one of Durack’s campuses for assistance to apply online.
General Enrolments take place after the Training Admissions offers have been sent. General Enrolments are open to the general public to fill any remaining places. Continuous enrolments are available throughout the year in some courses, contact your local campus for semester course lists or view them on the Durack website.

Course Fees & ChargesFees apply to most Durack courses and will vary according to the course. All fees and charges for courses must be paid at the time of enrolment. The Future Skills WA initiative by the Department of Training and Workforce Development, there have been changes to the way the Government subsidises training fees from 1 January 2014. To find out what you will pay, visit the FutureSkills WA website or contact your local campus reception.
Financial Assistance
To assist students in cases of financial hardship, Durack may offer an instalment plan where a minimum deposit is paid at enrolment and the remainder of the fees are paid in regular instalments. Concession rates are also available for eligible students for Certificate courses.
Proof of eligibility for concession must be shown when you enrol such as the following:
• Receive AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY• Receive the Youth Allowance• Have a health care card• Have a pensioner concession card• Have a Repatriation Health Benefits Card issued by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs• Turning 15-17 years of age in 2015 (proof of age is required)
Withdrawals & Refunds
Durack has a refunds policy. To be eligible for a refund, you will need to complete an Application for Withdrawal and Refund form, available from your local Durack campus reception
Generally you will be eligible for a partial refund provided you officially withdraw from your course within four weeks of commencing your first unit of study. Full refunds are only given in exceptional circumstances and will require supporting documentation.
VET FEE-HELP
Eligible students of Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications can defer payment of all or part of their fees by applying for VET FEE-HELP. This is an alternative to you paying course fees in full at time of enrolment.
Under this scheme you can take out a loan from the Commonwealth to pay your fees. You will start repaying the loan through the taxation system when your income exceeds a set level.
To discuss arranging a payment instalment plan, VET FEE-HELP or a refund, students will need to contact the Manager Client Services (08) 9956 2780 or Manager Training Support Services (08) 9956 2785.
Student Life @ DurackOrientation & Inductions
To help new students make the transition to study, Durack provides a student orientation program early in each semester. This can include a guided tour of the campus, information sessions about facilities and services, meeting staff who can provide support for you and specific information about your course.
All enrolled students receive a Student Diary outlining information relating to the expected code of conduct, enrolment and campus facilities and contact details for support Staff which is an excellent source of reference.
Student ID Card
The fee for this card is included in student enrolment fees and must be paid for at enrolment – it’s valid for the current year only. After inductions, students visit the Library in Geraldton, or their campus reception in Carnarvon and Exmouth to have a photo taken and collect the card with a Durack lanyard and bonus USB.
The Library must be informed when a card is lost or stolen - a fee is charged for replacement cards.
Present your Student ID Card at selected local businesses in Geraldton and Carnarvon to receive a range of discounts currently listed in the Student Diary.

Training AreasWith modern training facilities, experienced trainers and strong industry alliances, Durack’s extensive range of training programs are recognised by the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF).
Durack’s courses are also approved by industry, which means that they lead to great job prospects as you are trained in relevant skills ready to put towards practical use.

This training area offers courses in key areas of business, finance, information technology, management and training and assessment leading to potential careers in the public, private and community sectors, from large commercial enterprises through to small not-for-profit organisations.

This training area covers a broad category of fields within the service industry such as accommodation, restaurants, event management, transportation and tourism.
Courses focus on quality production, presentation and customer service with most training taking place in the workplace or workplace simulated environments such as the Zeewijk Training Restaurant at the Geraldton campus which has been a Gold Plate finalist for the past three years.

Marine, Applied & Environmental Science
Courses in this training area are predominantly delivered at (but not limited to) the Batavia Coast Maritime Institute (BCMI) which is a state of the art training, research and development facility.
The BCMI campus has strong links with the maritime and aquaculture industries. The nearby Abrolhos Islands are regularly used for field trips and students can access BCMI’s modern maritime simulator on-site or the 20m Master Class training vessel to complete their sea time.
BCMI is the only facility north of Perth able to provide the technical competency in chemical water testing which places it in the unique position of having students (supervised to) conduct commercial testing which provides a valuable service to WA’s mining, agriculture and aquaculture industries.

Events @ Durack

Annual Art Exhibitions
The exhibitions are a showcase of student’s work from a range of different visual art courses exploring innovative approaches of art in a contemporary context.
Students work with a range of mediums and subjects including landscapes, waterscapes, urban landscapes, portrait and figure studies, still life, abstracts, mixed media and sculptures.
Career Expos
Geraldton and Carnarvon campuses engage in career expos which are the premier showcase of careers and training pathways available in the region. The expos are free to attend and are open to all members of the community with a variety of free entertainment and live on-site radio broadcasts.
Visitors can talk directly to industry representatives and Durack staff about courses which they may choose to enrol in to reach their employment or professional development goals.
Graduation & Awards Ceremonies
Each campus has an annual awards ceremony to celebrate graduating students as well as those students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in their course.
The four major student awards offer a prize of $1000 each and sponsored by local business/industry.

Students enrolled at any Durack campus can apply for these awards and applications are available at any time of the year from Student Services, on the Durack website or at campus receptions.
Students are encouraged to apply for any category in which they may be eligible and can gain assistance from Student Services or their Lecturer to complete their application.
NAIDOC Event
The National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee event is held in early August at Durack. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920’s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.
Durack’s NAIDOC event includes a special flag raising ceremony, NAIDOC themed fun activities and guest speakers from the community as well as students who are supporting this awareness in their studies and career development.
Student Events
Durack encourages students to participate and engage in a wide range of social and career focused events each year. Events may be based on social, recreational, cultural or educational pursuits and may even be used as part of the assessment process for a specific course whilst studying at Durack. All Students are supervised by Durack staff to ensure they provide a quality event in a safe manner.
VETiS Awards
The Mid West and Gascoyne VET in Schools Award event recognises excellence in students undertaking Vocational Education and Training Programs in schools and is held on an annual basis in October.
Student nominations for the Mid West and Gascoyne VETiS Awards are welcome from any Teacher, Trainer, VET Coordinator or Host Employer in the Mid West or Gascoyne region.

Dedicated Campus Facilities
CibaTek Centre @ Geraldton
Located in the Library at X Block on the Geraldton Campus, this centre is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for students to access computer workstations. Students can swipe their student ID card to access the centre after hours once they have applied for authorised access with the Library Staff. Crèche @ Carnarvon
Located on the lower level of this campus, the crèche incorporates both an indoor and outdoor area which is a safe, happy and comfortable place for enrolled students to leave children while attending class.
Childcare is provided free if students are a Centrelink JET client otherwise a small fee will be charged to non-eligible students. For eligibility, contact Carnarvon Reception (08) 9941 0100 or [email protected]
Evolution Training Salon @ Geraldton
The Evolution (Hair and Beauty) Training Salon is located at B Block on the Geraldton Campus and available for students, staff and the community to enjoy subject to class schedules.
The salon is operated by Personal Services Students supervised by experienced Lecturers during school term for hair and beauty treatments at heavily discounted prices. Bookings are available (subject to class schedules) by contacting (08) 9956 6199 or [email protected]
Library @ Geraldton
The Library is available to all enrolled students and most services are offered free of charge. For a list of other services available, refer to the Library webpage on the Durack website.
A number of online full text subject databases including the library catalogue are also available. A wide range of resources on a variety of topics can be accessed via the Library webpage on the Durack website.
Me-N-U Cafe @ Geraldton
Located in G Block on the Geraldton campus, the Me-N-U Cafe serves morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea during school term between 7.30am to 3.30pm weekdays with eftpos facilities available.
Select from a variety of hot or cold meals with a menu catering to all tastes and dietary requirements. Healthy options are available in addition to the regular student favourites like chips and gravy!
Pepperell Student Village @ Geraldton
The Village consists of 12 recently refurbished self-contained units (including one unit with access for students with disabilities) with a lounge and dining area and four study/bedrooms in each. All units are fully furnished with basic cooking facilities, TVs and DVD players.
Two Residential Supervisors offer students dedicated support and assistance in adjusting to their new study and living environment (during and outside of school hours). Students have the option of receiving evening meals (Monday to Friday) from the Me-N-U Cafe.
Zeewijk Training Restaurant @ Geraldton
Each semester members of the public have the opportunity to dine at the Zeewijk Training Restaurant located at U Block on the Geraldton campus where they will be served by the students supervised by industry experienced Lecturers. Bookings are required on (08) 9956 2732 or [email protected]
For the third consecutive year, the restaurant has succeeded in becoming a finalist in the prestigious Gold Plate Awards for the category - Restaurant within a Training Establishment.
Open on Wednesday evening for the fine dining experience and Thursday for casual bistro style lunches, sample menus are available for viewing on the Durack website.

General Campus Facilities
Access For Students With Disabilities
All campuses have facilities to provide for students and visitors with disabilities. Our Equity and Access Inclusion Officer (based at the Geraldton campus) works across all five campuses to coordinate and implement support for students with a disability, impairment or long term condition.
The service is free, confidential and voluntary. Liaise with Durack staff if you have queries about access to buildings and classrooms and they will seek further support for you should you require it. Designated parking bays are indicated on the campus site maps available on the Durack website.
Bookshop @ Geraldton
Located at A Block on the Geraldton Campus, the Bookshop can cater to the requirements of all five campuses. Students can purchase text books required for their classes and basic stationary or pick up a free copy of the student handbook and diary between 8.00am to 10.30am weekdays.
Childcare @ Geraldton
Bambi Childcare centre is located on the Geraldton campus at Y Block on Fitzgerald Street. Contact the centre direct on (08) 9964 7007 for further details.
Common Rooms
BCMI, Carnarvon, Exmouth and Wiluna campuses have common rooms which all students can use to relax with facilities such as a microwave, kettle/urn or fridge. Students are responsible for cleaning the dishes and cups that they use.
Parking
At the Geraldton campus, free parking is available with extra space available in the overflow carpark on Fitzgerald Street opposite Bambi Childcare. Parking in unmarked parking bays or specially designated areas may result in a fine. At the Carnarvon and Exmouth campuses, parking is available on the surrounding streets and may be subject to time limits. Free parking is available onsite for the Wiluna campus.
Public Telephones & Mobile Phone Etiquette
A public telephone is located at the front of the Geraldton Campus on Fitzgerald Street and on the lower level of the Carnarvon Campus. Mobile phones must be turned off during class.
Recycling, Reuse and Reduction @ Durack
Durack’s Geraldton campus has introduced a range of Sustainability programs on all campuses highlighted by the Sustainability SPOT program, to increase the awareness and engagement of actions by:
• Introducing multi-use coffee cups, water bottles and shopping bags to reduce waste
• Providing plastic, aluminium can, newspaper, waste paper and battery recycling facilities on-campus
• Implementing TravelSmart Workplace programs to reduce single-occupant car travel to and from campuses and encouraging staff and students to actively travel
• Installing a Renewable Energy system and an Aquifer Storage Recovery system, to produce alternative sources of energy and water

Wi-Fi @ Durack
Enrolled students with portable devices such as laptops, tablets, smartphones or media players with Wi-Fi can access Durack Wi-Fi networks in selected areas on all campus except Wiluna.
Students are allocated an amount of internet access at the beginning of the enrolment year together with their network user ID and password. Contact reception staff for directions to connect.
