Mr. Kiesel was born on a farm in Nebraska on February 22, 1915, and as a young man in Kansas he developed an interest in musical instruments; specifically,

Hawaiian steel guitars, resonators, and the newly-emerging electronic aspects of these instruments. While playing on local radio shows he found that he had an equal passion for building instruments and equipment as he did playing

them, and that passion would become his life’s work.

He founded the L. C. Kiesel Company in 1946 specializing in winding guitar pickups on an old sewing machine, and by 1949 he had added amplifiers and steel guitars to his lineup of gear. There are still examples of these early Kiesel badged steel guitars and amplifiers in existence today, underscoring the quality and

durability of Mr. Kiesel’s early designs.

Kiesel pickups were originally offered through a distributor, however Mr. Kiesel knew he could do a better job by eliminating the middle-man and selling directly to the customer. this revolutionary idea became

the foundation of a business that would last generations.

After almost 70 years designing and manufacturing high quality, USA-made instruments, Carvin Corporation’s guitar and bass Custom Shop divi-sion is being separated into its own company, to be known as Kiesel Custom

Guitars. This will allow the Custom Shop’s talented designers, builders and other staff to focus exclusively on creating the world-class instru-

ments the company is known for. The original Kiesel brand name was launched in 1946 by family patriarch Lowell Kiesel as the L.C. Kiesel Com-

pany, and was renamed “Carvin” in 1949 when the company launched its in-novative direct-sales business model, so returning to the “Kiesel” name is an homage to the company founder, who passed away in 2009. Mark Kiesel,

son of Lowell, has been in charge of guitar production since 1970, and pioneered countless innovations in the stringed instrument industry over the years. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Mark personally designed

and built every instrument that passed through the Custom Shop, and as the popularity of the brand exploded in the 1980s, a whole team of tal-ented luthiers, painters, engineers, technicians and other staff joined

the company. Mark’s son, Jeff Kiesel, has been with the company for over 20 years, and under Mark’s tutelage, has acquired a wealth of

knowledge in the design and construction of stringed instruments. His innovative and exciting new instrument designs, new features, and op-tions as well as streamlined manufacturing processes have reinvigo-

rated the Custom Shop, and created excitement among the Custom Shop’s countless players and fans. The Carvin brand name for instruments is

exclusively owned by Kiesel Guitars and will continue to be made along side Kiesel branded instruments. Kiesel Guitars is retaining the current

staff and Production will continue at current location.

Mark Kiesel, President says: “I have loved this business from the time I started working part time for my dad in the 60’s. Later in 1970 after work-ing full time as a design draftsman for a large aero-space company, I was asked by my brother, Carson to quit my job and work full time at Carvin

to run the guitar department. It’s been a fun process to grow our guitar sales from miniscule to what they are today. If my Dad was still with us

he would be proud to see his original KIESEL logo in use again. The cool-est thing for me is to see how passionate my son Jeff is about designing and building guitars. And now my grandson Zak is working part time.

How cool is that! When you are as passionate as we are about designing and building instruments, having our own company to focus entirely on

guitars and basses is a dream come true!”

Flamed Maple pro-duces singing highs with a tight low end. Sounds wonderful over our standard Maple neck/Alder body or Mahogany.

Quilted Maple pro-duces similar tones to Flamed Curly Maple. The quilted figure can vary from large to smaller pockets.

Besides i ts exot ic Hawaiian Island appeal & rarity, a guitar built with a Flamed Curly Koa top wi l l g ive added sweetness and pronounced midrange.

Carvin uses the finest premium 4A Spalted maple available. This exotic wood comes from dying-standing trees, which gives this wood its unique old-world look.

Black Limba also known as Korina, This denser wood will add up to 1 Lb of weight to your instru-ment and give a clear focused sound. White Limba also available.

We use premium Eas te rn hard rock maple for our necks because of its time proven strength and stabil ity. As a body wood, hard rock maple being very heavy and dense delivers a bright sustaining tone.

This medium light-weight wood is the standard body wood for most Carvin solid body guitars and bass-es. Alder is a classic tone wood – used in solid body electric gui-tars since the ‘50’s.

Genuine Mahogany is a classic tone wood. Denser and heavier than Alder and can add over 1 pound to your instrument. Mahogany along with our flamed or quilted maple tops, give great sustain and warmth.

Swamp Ash, which comes from Southern swamps is about the same weight or slight-ly lighter than Alder. It is light in color with rich grain patterns and delivers slightly less midrange with full low-end and nice singing highs.

B lack wa lnu t has medium dark beauti-ful grain patterns, i s h e a v i e r t h a n Mahogany and can add up to 2 pounds to your instrument. It has a warm, growling low end and a bright top end.

Koa is similar in we ight or s l ight ly heavier than Alder. It has warmth and susta in s imi lar to Mahogany and pos-s e s s e s t h e c l e a r open tone of Alder. Koa looks wonderful whether you choose a tung oiled, satin or gloss finish.

Claro walnut provides brighter tone in the upper register with a darker growling low end. The figure can have var ia t ions o f brown and black.

California Carved TopsWe are proud to offer the 22 fret and 24 fret “California Carved Tops”. The CT3 & CT324 have an all mahogany body and can be ordered with an optional eastern hard rock maple cap. The CT6 & CT624 feature an exquisite curly-flamed maple top. FG1 CARVED TOPWe worked very closely with Frank Gambale in the development of the FG1. This guitar is a true carved top semi-hollow double-cutaway instrument. The genuine Honduran mahogany body is chambered and features a premium carved curly-flamed maple top. The FG1 neck profile and heel are custom sculpted to Frank’s specifica-tions which makes for very comfortable playability and total access to all 22 frets. Frank chose the C22B pickup for the bridge and worked closely with us to develop the FG22N neck pickup. This exquisite instrument is extremely versatile and will handle all music styles from jazz to rock.

Wood destined for necks arrives at Carvin Guitars’ Custom Shop in various states of moisture content. In order to alleviate stress and eliminate any warping during the neck construction process. Our slow kiln dries all wood before any cuts are made. From there all lumber is cut into neck blanks and stacked with spacers to allow airflow between each blank. The blanks will remain in the dehumidification chamber for several weeks. This works to equalize the moisture content and relax the wood, eliminating any stress. Once stabilized, each neck is precisely machined and 2 carbon-fiber reinforce-ment rods are installed along with the dual-action adjust-able truss rod to ensure stability for the entire life of the bass.

Two key examples are the tilt-back headstock and our refined neck heel and 5-bolt neck plate. The tilt-back headstock eliminates a string tree and allows for a straighter string pull behind the nut. This assists in tun-ing stability and overall tone and sustain on open notes. The 5-bolt neck plate provides superior joining of the neck to the body while maintaining an ergo-nomic and non-invasive heel that allows players to access all frets. The RAD-J single coil features an Alnico V magnet giving the same clarity and pure tone as our award winning J99A pickups. This new pickup has a 14” radius and works great with fingerboard radii from 10” - 16” providing consistent output across all strings. These unique pickups were designed specifically for the Brian Bromberg B24 and B25 basses. Designed for 4, 5 and 6 string basses with an effective string spacing width up to 3.3”. Dimensions are 4.25” long x 1.25” wide x .75” high. Available in black only. (8.25k Ohms)

The RAD-H side-by-side humbucker features Alnico V magnets for great clarity along with deep, smooth bass response with excellent mid-range punch. Radius and size same as RAD-J.

Carvin’s new SCP split coil humbucking pickup sounds so huge that players immediatley think they are playing an active bass. Each coil encorporates a single Alnico V magnet which will eliminate volume drop if the string isn’t perfectly centered between pole pieces. Vintage plain enamel wire is used for its sweet and natural well rounded bottom end, full punchy mids and dynamic highs. Designed for 4, 5 and 6 string basses. Direct replacement for Fender Precision® Basses.
