The Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida
The Rt. Rev. Dabney T. Smith, Bishop January 1, 2015
Dear Sisters in Christ:
Episcopal Church Women Diocese of Southwest Florida
As you begin your church planning for 2015 I invite you to revisit the Diocesan Convention theme, “We Have This Treasure”. We have this treasure in earthen vessels, a scriptural and euphemistic way of describing Gods incredible power working through our fragile, mortal lives.
It is my conviction that we, the Church have two main purposes: to strengthen, challenge, and nurture the faithful in all aspects of Christian living; and to seek, invite, welcome, and incorporate the not-yet-believers into lives of faithful, believing relationship with Jesus Christ. John’s Gospel calls that life the abundant life. Christian love is reasonable, appealing, strengthening, healing, hopeful, real, and compelling.
The Daily Office in the Book of Common Prayers presumes that we pray for the mission of the Church every single day! Every day when I say my morning prayers I pray for one of our congregations in this diocese. Pray for your own congregation every day, for its mission, for its leaders, for its members, for its visitors. Pray for it every day!
There are plenty of resources available to help a congregation achieve better practices in hospitality, newcomer incorporation, and service in the community. Be the leaders in your own congregations by learning and then leading to equip your faith community for growth.
Finally, there really are people in your personal spheres of influence that do not know really who Jesus is or what it means to understand the Church as the Body of Christ. Reflect on why your own personal Christian faith is compelling to you. Then don’t be afraid to share it with someone you know and care about. You are surrounded by potential first generation Christians. Remember, it is about the Abundant Life that you have to share. We have this treasure. It is humbling. It is overwhelming. It is life giving. It is compelling. Thank God for this mercy. Thank God for you. We have this treasure!
Faithfully yours,
The Rt. Rev. Dabney T. Smith Fifth Bishop of Southwest Florida

2015 ECW Diocesan President’s Message….. Dear Sisters in Christ, We have just said good-bye to another year and are celebrating the start of 2015 together. I believe that the end of the year is a good time for reflection, welcoming positive changes in our lives and identifying new opportunities. I like to reflect on how I can make changes in my life for the better and implement something new into my daily routine that I’ve been wanting to accomplish. I am ever mindful of what Bishop Smith said at Diocesan Convention in October. He spoke to us about people who are making a difference and reminded us “We have this Treasure. “
As your newly elected President of the Episcopal Church Women for the Diocese of Southwest Florida I would like to tell you how much I look forward to the next three years as we work together serving our Lord in our churches, communities and beyond. Over the past three years as your ECW President Elect I have witnessed your leadership, your commitment to Christ, and your dedication to your churches. For many of you using your God given gifts has been a lifelong process and for some the adventure has only begun, but our common thread continues….We are the Women of the Episcopal Church joined together to serve and do God’s work - “We have these Treasures“ among us.
Your 2015-2017 Diocesan ECW Board is looking forward to meeting you and serving with you the next three years also. We are excited about the possibilities that exist in our branches. Your board is here to help you in any way we can. We urge you to reach out to us for support and guidance in your women’s ministry. We also encourage you to participate and be active in the ministries and programs in your deaneries and those offered by the diocese. We believe there is a place for an organized Episcopal Church Woman's group in each of our churches and together “Make Crist Known with Love and Compassion”. Blessings, Lana J. ALTAR GUILD
When you enter your church, all is in readiness. The silent ministry of the Altar Guild has been at work. All the proper vessels, vestments, and hangings are in place.
The silver and brass have been polished and all the linens have been washed and ironed. In some churches the flowers have been arranged. Everything in the sanctuary has been prepared by the Altar Guild. Its members are God’s housekeepers. All who perform these chores are devoted to God and are privileged to serve Him.
The Diocese is divided into two areas. The Northern area has three Deaneries (Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg) and the Southern area has four (Manasota, Venice, Fort Myers, Naples).

CHURCH PERIODICAL CLUB (CPC)
The Church Periodical Club is an independent, affiliated organization of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, dedicated to the worldwide ministry of the printed word. In this diocese it is administered by the Episcopal Church Women. All churches are asked to participate whether there is an ECW Branch or not. The Presiding Bishop designates a CPC Sunday, but with the approval of each congregation’s Priest-in-Charge. It may be held at any time of the year. In our diocese one-half of the offering may be retained by the congregation for books, Bibles, Sunday School curricula, etc. for use within the congregation. Undergraduate Student Book Grants are available in our Diocese. See ECW Handbook/CPC, form on page 16, or contact CPC Diocesan Director. The CPC Mile of Pennies (MOP) is an outreach program to provide books for children grades K-12. One mile of pennies equals $844.80 and a MOP grant is for that amount. The MOP collection must be remitted by the Diocese in full to the national organization. Checks are to be made out to ECW Diocese of Southwest Florida and marked for CPC Mile of Pennies. UNITED THANK OFFERING
United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. Grants are awarded annually and must meet the criteria set forth by the United Thank Offering Committee. Grants are submitted to the Bishop’s office, reviewed by the committee, and the Bishop writes his recommendation. The ECW Diocesan UTO Director will forward annual UTO dates and criteria for grant information to the churches when it becomes available. The Grant applications are available on line.
United Thank Offering Prayer
Source of all creation, all love, all true joy, accept we pray, these outward signs of our profound and continuing thankfulness for all of life. Bless those who will benefit from these gifts through the outreach of the United Thank Offering; and keep each of us ever thankful for all the blessings of joy and challenge that come our way; through him who is the greatest gift and blessing of all, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen

MISSION & MINISTRY
In 2002, Province IV added a chair for Mission & Ministry to their board of directors, and in 2004, our Diocesan Board followed their lead. The purpose of Mission & Ministry arm of our Diocesan ECW is twofold: 1) to raise the awareness of mission work being done throughout the Diocese by serving as a conduit of communication from the local branches to the Diocesan Board, and vice versa; 2) to support one another’s mission work through sharing, not only of resources, experience and knowledge, but especially, through prayers. This team includes the respective deanery representatives for Mission & Ministry, as well as the coordinators for youth ministry, scholarship funds and mission projects for our companion diocese, the Dominican Republic; Asian Ministry; and representatives or coordinators of any upcoming ministries, as these arise.

Sara Howell MEMORIAL FUND
The Sara Howell Memorial Fund is a ministry that was created by and administered by the Episcopal Church Women in the Diocese of Southwest Florida.
In May 1988 this new ministry was named in memory of Sara Howell, who had served as ECW Diocesan Chair of Christian Social Concerns. Sara had, years before, found herself a single parent with no means of support or any job skills. She met her challenge, entering the workforce and sustaining both herself and her daughter. Encouraging women to fulfill their individual potential through education was important to Sara.
The intent and purpose of this ministry is to provide needed financial aid and support to Episcopal women seeking entry or re-entry into the job market. Paramount among those needing assistance are single parents who must support their families as well as older women who need training to return to the workforce. In this challenging economy more women are finding it necessary to advance themselves beyond minimum wage employment by training and education.
Most support for the Sara Howell Memorial Fund is provided by ECW branches through their outreach budgets and also from memorial or recognition gifts. Every dollar given means new life, new vision and hope to an Episcopal woman in need of help, be it your friend, a women in your church, a neighbor or yourself one day. Each gift from the heart is a true testament of accepting our mission to be women helping women.
SARA HOWELL MEMORIAL FUND PRAYER
“Heavenly Father, bless we pray for those we strive to help in the memory of our sister, your servant, Sara Howell. Grant them new life and new vision. Amen

The Daughters of the King is a religious order for lay women in the Episcopal, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches, and was organized in 1885. Every Daughter pledges herself to a lifelong program of prayer, service and evangelism, dedicating herself to the spread of Christ’s kingdom, especially among women and girls. There is a three month preparation period before final vows are taken.
Daughters are young and old, rich and poor, beautiful and plain, community leaders and mothers, doctors and teachers, secretaries, executives and housewives, sinful and wavering, generous and strong. Daughters are ordinary human beings enabled by God’s grace to do His work. The symbol of the Order is a silver Greek cross which members wear at all times.
THE MOTTO OF THE ORDER
For His sake I am but one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do.
What I ought to do, by the grace of God, I will do. Lord, what will you have me do?
