Readers voted, and here are the winnersWith a community as

diverse and thriving as Greater Pittston, it’s easy for customers to shop local.

From hardware stores to dance stu-dios to, of course, pizzerias, Greater Pittston has it all. Readers voted online and with paper ballots and chose the crème de la crème of every-thing our area has to offer. The 2015 Best of Greater Pittston Readers’ Contest sponsored by the Sunday Dispatch features winners in 90 categories — that sounds like a lot of satisfied custom-ers.

The awards ceremony was held Tuesday at Brews Brothers to celebrate the occasion. Business owners

received plaques, a round of applause and a well-deserved night off to enjoy local cama-raderie.

Working together is a hallmark of this area — whether it’s in busi-ness, community ser-vice, or even helping out a fellow resident, Greater Pittstonians are always willing to

pitch in to get the job done. Let me tell you a bit about the group effort it took to bring this contest to fruition.

Our publisher Doug Ols-

son leads the entire team, with Executive Editor George Spohr, Managing Editor Dotty Martin and Advertising Director Tony Spina managing the edito-rial and advertising ends of things, respectively.

Judy Minsavage, Robert Vanderveken and Renee Sager take the time to count all those paper and online ballots every year to ensure every vote is accounted for. Then, Judy joins reporters Nick Wagner and Jimmy Fisher in making calls to all the winners, gathering infor-mation for the special sec-tion you’re looking at now. Nick and Jimmy also serve as photographers, snapping

photos of the winners you see in these pages.

Greater Pittston’s adver-tising needs are served by Paula Hapeman, part of a sales team that aims for the highest level of customer satisfaction, just like the winners of this contest. Tina Murdock and her staff design this publication for readers to enjoy.

In many aspects of life, it takes a village. In Greater Pittston, residents wouldn’t have it any other way.

Congratulations to our winners, and thank you for reading.

PHOTOGRAPHERBob Dellarte

Bob Dellarte, owner of Golden Photo Studio on Wyoming Avenue in West Pittston, has been chosen best photographer in Greater Pittston for the fourth year in a row. “I love what I do,” Delarte said when recently asked how he felt about the honor. “I love shooting sports and working with kids,” he added. Golden specializes in wedding photography (ceremony, reception, candid bride and groom, wedding party) and videos; formal and casual senior photos, indoor and outdoor; sports, music and dance themes; video transfers (all formats); and commercial photography.

ARTiSTMaria Livrone

“It’s great; it’s always wonderful to be recognized for your accomplishments,” Maria Livrone said about being chosen Best of Greater Pittston in the artist category. An artist for approximately 40 years, Livrone came upon a unique fused glass technique she uses in her creations. She also mixes that technique with metal to create indoor and outdoor sculptures. Her husband Bill does the welding. The couple are owners of Art On Main in Pittston.

LOCAL FLAVOR

Michael Fuller teaches his ninth grade civics and economics class at Pittston Area High School. He won the title of best high school teacher in this year’s Best of Greater Pittston readers’ choice awards.

HiGH SCHOOL TEACHERMichael Fuller

Michael Fuller, voted best high school teacher in this year’s Best of Greater Pittston poll, is in his 12th year teaching ninth-grade civics and economics at Pittston Area High School. On winning, Fuller stated, “I’m very honored and grateful to have won. It’s humbling because there are so many great teachers.” Fuller, who initially pursued a different career, credits some “great former educators” for his decision to change direction. “I want to thank Mike Carroll Sr., Ned Linnen and Frank McLane, who inspired me to pursue a teaching career.” Fuller really knows when he has hit home with his students when he can “make their jaws drop” upon learning something new, such as when he recently compared the state’s prison budget to the education budget. The difference between the two was something the students did not expect.

GOLF COURSEFox Hill Country Club

On June 23, 1920, a parcel of land along the West Pittston-Exeter border was chosen as a possible site for the proposed Fox Hill Country Club. By 1921, the nine-hole course was “ready for play.” It wasn’t long before membership outgrew the course and it was time to expand. Fox Hill, chosen by Sunday Dispatch

readers as best golf course, is considered one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Social memberships are available and the club has a dining hall and banquet facilities.

BAZAARSacred Heart of Jesus Church

Volunteers are the key to the success of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Bazaar in Dupont. Many hours are logged not only working the event, but preparing a variety of ethnic foods such as pierogies, sausage and peppers and haluski. But the one food item for which the wait time supersedes the term “long” are the bazaar’s famous potato pancakes. It’s widely known the church goes through two tons or more of potatoes preparing for the event.

ORGAniZED EVEnTPittston Tomato Festival

To say the Pittston Tomato Festival is the best of Greater Pittston’s organized events tells only half of the story. People from other parts of the country travel to this event. With over 50,000 people attending the festival

each year, there is virtually something for all ages. Along with delicious food, the festival offers events such as Tomato Queen, Little Miss and Mister Tomato, a 5K run and, of course, the highlight event, the famous

Tomato Fights. Organizers of this event start preparing for the next year as soon as the current year festival closes. With 32 years of experience under their belts, the festival committee plans this event to perfection.

HEARinG AiD CEnTERProfessional Hearing Aid Service

The Caprari family has operated the Professional Hearing Aid Service for nearly 50 years. Located in the old Duchess Factory Outlet at 75 William St., the hearing aid center started when Samuel Caprari opened the business in 1967. His son,

Paul, has since taken over the business. One of the business’s best attributes is the program it has installed to help low-income individuals afford hearing aids. “It’s a thrilling experience when you can help someone out,” Paul said. The center works closely with the Scranton School for the Deaf, as well. Paul believes it’s the longevity of the business that keeps people coming back. “The door is open to everyone,” he said.

Sunday Dispatch readers voted for Professional Hearing Aid Services for best hearing aid center in 2015.
