GLOBAL ARRIVALS

International tourist arrivals grew by 4.4% in 2015 to reach a total of 1,184 million in 2015, according to the

latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Some 50 million more tourists (overnight visitors) travelled to

international destinations around the world last year as compared to 2014.

2015 marks the 6th consecutive year of above-average growth, with international arrivals increasing by 4% or

more every year since the post-crisis year of 2010.

Demand was strong overall, though

with mixed results across individual

destinations due to unusually strong

exchange rate fluctuations, the drop

in oil prices and other commodities

which increased disposable income

in importing countries but weakened

demand in exporters, as well as

increased safety and security

concerns.

By region, Europe, the Americas and

Asia and the Pacific all recorded

around 5% growth in 2015. Arrivals

to the Middle East increased by 3% while in Africa, limited data available, points to an estimated 3% decrease,

mostly due to weak results in North Africa, which accounts for over one third of arrivals in the region.

REGIONAL ARRIVALS

Long-stay visitor arrivals

According to the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), for the first time ever, the pace of growth of Caribbean

tourism outperformed every major tourism region in the world. Caribbean tourism grew by an estimated seven

per cent to 28.7 million visits, much higher than the

projected four to five per cent. This performance

was above the global rate of growth, which the UN

agency, the World Tourism Organization quoted at

4.4 per cent.

Travel to countries of the Organization of Eastern

Caribbean States was up 2.1 per cent, while every

other sub-grouping recorded growth of at least three

per cent. The best performing was the grouping of

“Other Caribbean” comprising Cancun, Cozumel,

Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Haiti and Suriname, which recorded arrivals of 11.3 per cent.1

The CTO has reported that the solid performance in the Caribbean was due to factors in the following markets:

United States

The region benefitted from a rise in consumer confidence in the United States where a strong dollar encouraged

outbound travel among Americans. Other factors include increased air capacity and persistent marketing by

many Caribbean destinations and resorts plying for business in the United States. Consequently, travel from the

US grew an impressive 6.3 per cent to 14.3 million visits, accounting for approximately 50 per cent of all arrivals.

Canada

The Canadian market continued to be resilient with a 4.5 per cent increase in 2015, although its share of total

arrivals dropped marginally from 12.1 per cent to 11.8 per cent, with 3.4 million Canadians coming to the

Caribbean.

Europe

The European market made significant gains in 2015, recording its best performance in seven years. For the

first time since 2008, total arrivals from Europe reached the five million mark, a rise of 4.2 per cent compared

to 2014. Arrivals from Germany recorded an even better 11.5 per cent rise, while France was relatively flat,

increasing by 0.8 per cent.

United Kingdom

The UK was one of the dominant performers, growing by a healthy 10.4 per cent to 1.1 million visitors.

Caribbean

Despite ongoing concerns about the high cost of travel within the region, intra-Caribbean travel recorded its best

performance on record. In 2015, traffic from the Caribbean market accounted for six per cent of total arrivals,

with 1.7 million visits among the various states, an increase of 11.4 per cent over the previous year. All of the

regional groupings registered strong growth from this market, ranging from six percent to 9.3 per cent.

South America

Despite the political and economic challenges faced by many South American countries that source market

continued its rapid growth in 2015, generating 2.1 million visitors to the Caribbean, an 18.3 per cent increase

over 2014. This represents 7.2 per cent of overall regional traffic.

Cruise Passenger Arrivals

Organization, Tuesday February 16th, 2016

The CTO has also reported that the cruise

sector’s performance was not as robust as

stay-over visits, although there was a rise

compared to 2014. Demand for Caribbean

cruises was relatively high in the first four

months of the year, averaging a 4.8 per

cent rise. There were strong gains also of

3.5 per cent in June and 3.8 per cent in

November.

However, this stout performance was

undermined by declines in the summer

months associated with the traditional redeployment of vessels away from the Caribbean region. Consequently,

there were an estimated 24.4 million cruise visits in 2015, an increase of 1.3 per cent over 2014. The cruise

sector’s performance was not as robust, although there was a rise compared to 2014. Demand for Caribbean

cruises was relatively high in the first four months of the year, averaging a 4.8 per cent rise. There were strong

gains also of 3.5 per cent in June and 3.8 per cent in November.

According to the CTO, out of the 24 destinations providing cruise passenger arrival data, five destinations

reported arrivals for the period January to December.

The Cayman Islands and Saint Lucia were the only destinations to record an increase in cruise passenger arrivals

for the period January to December of 6.7% and 5.6% respectively.

VISITOR ARRIVALS TO BARBADOS

Long stay Tourist Arrivals

Barbados soared to a new milestone, as 2015

became the best producing year in history for

tourist arrivals to the island. Long stay tourist

arrivals grew by 13.9% in 2015, a total of

591,892 up from 519,598 in 2014.2

This performance has surpassed 2007 which

previously held the highest record of over

570,000 visitors. In 2015, Barbados registered

2 2015 preliminary figure from the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS)

19,365 more tourists when compared with 2007 which represents a 3.4% increase.

All the months of the calendar year recorded increases with December (64,481) and February (57,815) emerging

as the peak months of 2015, recording increases of 5.5% and 20.1% respectively. The lowest number of arrivals

was recorded in the month of September (32,154). Notwithstanding that September is usually a slower period;

in 2015 it recorded growth of 22.1% when compared with the corresponding period for 2014.

This growth was not only due to overall global interest in Caribbean travel and increased consumer confidence

and but also was the result of (i) Barbados’ growth strategy focused heavily on increased consumer and trade

engagement aimed at increasing the destination’s top of mind awareness and(ii) the diversification of source

markets, including establishing new gateways out of Boston via JetBlue; Bogota, Columbia through Avianca; and

a new Thomas Cook service out of Glasgow.

The new all-inclusive Sandals Barbados, as well as the new Sugar Bay all-inclusive resort, provided approximately

380 more rooms to the island’s room inventory during the year and contributed in a great way to the increase in

new long stay arrivals.

Market Performance

Analysis of the major source markets revealed that the United Kingdom continues to dominate as the leading

tourist producer to the country, contributing 36.8% of business and growing by 14.1% when compared with

2014.

The United States remained the second most tourist generating market to Barbados accounting for 25 percent

of long stay visitor arrivals. This market recorded a significant increase of 24.8%.

The Caribbean territories continue to contribute significantly to the overall tourist count injecting 15.9% of

business for the reporting period. Increases were recorded for Trinidad and Tobago (5.8%) and the other

Caribbean territories (13.1%) when compared with 2014.

Canada generated 12.6% of business to Barbados during 2015 recording growth of 13% when compared with

the previous year.

Although Europe is not a major player, this market contributed 6.3% of the overall proportion of business.

Germany recorded a 3.2% increase compared with the same period for 2014 whilst the other European countries

recorded a decline of 14.4%.

The new and developing market, South and Central America accounted for 1.8% of the arrivals to Barbados.

Overall this market recorded a decline of -3.8% in arrivals. The Brazilian market continues to record declines in

traffic, the year in review saw a reduction of 26.8% of visitors compared with the corresponding period for 2014;

however, this decline was slightly offset by the 19.0% increase in arrivals from the other countries in this market.

Top Producing Countries

With a total of 541,357 visitors, the top fifteen most tourist generating countries to Barbados in 2015

represented 91% share of all arrivals.

The top seven countries remained the same as that of 2014; however, there were slight changes in the ranking

positions that followed. Sweden, which was ranked in 13th position in 2014, moved down to position number 22;

this resulted in Ireland and four Caribbean countries (St Lucia, Dominica, Antigua and Grenada) moving up in

rankings. Brazil moved downward from 10th and France from 11th positions to 14th and 13th positions,

respectively.

Barbados.

With 439,549 visitors,

pleasure/holiday/vacation category

accounted for approximately three

quarters of the percentage share, two (2) percentage points down from 2014.

The Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) category with 5% percentage share, remained unchanged; and persons

travelling for business (8%) were one percentage point down when compared to 2014.

followed by 8 to 14 days (33%). Eighty-one

percent (81%) of all visitors to Barbados stayed

four (4) days or more.

Four (4) to seven (7) dayers contributed to the

majority of the overall increase in arrivals with a

42% share.

Although there was a significant increase in the number of one dayers (50%), the percentage share of this

category against the overall increase in visitors was 27%.

unchanged with 14% of the visitors’ choice. There was a significant increase in travellers staying at all-inclusive

properties; percentage share rose from 9.6% in 2014 to 11.5% in 2015. The percentage share of visitors using

the remaining types of accommodation remained slightly unchanged.

SOURCES OF TOURISM DEMAND

UNITED KINGDOM

The United Kingdom has maintained its position as the top producing market for 2015 accounting for 36.8% of

business to Barbados, recording an increase of 14.1% when compared with 2014. This increase can be

attributed to improvements in the UK’s economy, consistent advertising and public relations campaigns (Brilliant

Barbados, Gimme 5 & Fly etc.) and new accommodation stock with the advent of Sandals Barbados.

Greater London continued its position as the primary source county for travel to Barbados in 2015 recording a

percentage share of 9.9%. When compared with 2014 Greater London dominated the UK market with 10.4%

of business. This area reported an increase of 8.6% in arrivals when compared to 2014.

Table 1 shows a significant pattern with almost all of the top producing counties in the UK having registered

gains. The most impressive county was West Sussex recording 94.4% growth over the previous year. Of the top

counties Ireland was the exception recorded a 3.6% decline when compared with 2014.

SEASONALITY OF ARRIVALS

The United Kingdom recorded increases for all twelve months in 2015. The best performing month for this

market was December; a ttotal of 25,442 tourists were recorded representing an increase of 16.3% when

SOURCES OF TOURISM DEMAND

EUROPE

The European market recorded successes in 2014 (11.3%) and 2014 (8.8%) but experienced a falloff in

business to the destination in 2015 (9.2%). For the year in review Europe contributed 6.3% of business to the

overall tourist count. This performance is noteworthy since there is only one schedule direct flight from this

region and no physical National Tourist Office. This is an indication of the demand that exists for Barbados as a

tourist destination from this region (See Table 1).

Germany continues to be the top producer of business for Barbados contributing 33.3% of the overall traffic from

that market. This represented a 3.2% increase when compared with 2014. France (11.7%) was the second

highest producer recording an increase of 1.6% followed by Italy (9.6%), and the Netherlands (5.7%) registering

decreases of 8% and 6.7% respectively (See Table 2).

SEASONALITY OF ARRIVALS

This market’s performance was lackluster for 2015 with a few months showing peaks and falling off in some

months. The best performing month for this market was December. A total of 5,641 tourists were recorded

representing a decrease of 6.2% when compared to the following year. January had the second highest count

of 5,239, a decrease of 13.9%. September recorded the lowest arrivals with 1,382 tourists, a decline when

compared to 2014 of 4.7%. The months of June, August and October registered growth during this calendar

year of 4.9%, 15% and 2% respectively (See Chart 1).

PURPOSE OF VISIT

The pattern of purpose of travel to Barbados from this market has not changed. Pleasure continues to be the

main purpose of travel accounting for 78% of business, a 15.1% decrease over the previous year. The business

traffic contributed 6.3% of the overall Europe count, a retrogression of 14.5% compared with 2014. Of note is

that most business travellers (33.4%) originated from Germany; whilst those travelling as students (57%) and

for sports (37.4%) came from France.

AVERAGE DURATION OF STAY AND TOURIST NIGHTS

The distribution pattern of European stays for the year in review was similar to that of 2014. Approximately

26.2% of tourists stayed 7 – 10 days, a decrease of 8.9% when compared to 2014; 15.3% opted to stay between

11 – 14 days and 14.1% for 4 – 6 days representing losses of 34.4% and 11.6% respectively.

The total number of nights spent by the 37,241 tourists who visited Barbados in 2015 amounted to 385,365.

This was a decrease of 14.2% when compared with the figure of 449,358 nights recorded for the previous year

(See Table 6).

TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION

For the year in review Luxury accommodation was the preference for European travellers accounting for 22.6%

of overall business from this market. This represented an increase of 5.9%. Villas picked up 16.7% of business

experiencing a loss of 6.1% when compared with 2014. Hotels with over 100 rooms (15.5%) were also popular

among Europeans but saw a drop off of 28.7% of business. Visitors staying at Intimate properties (11.9%)

showed slight growth of 1.1% (See Chart 7).

On examination a high percentage of visitors who chose the above mentioned types of accommodation

originated from Germany (See Table 8).

AGE & SEX DISTRIBUTIONS

2015 saw gender distributed quite equally between the males (50%) and females (50%) travelling from Europe

(See Chart 6).

Approximately 21.6% of European tourists were between the ages of 46– 55 years. This was a 5.9% decrease

for this grouping over the previous year. Tourist in the age grouping 26 – 35 years (21.5%) and the 36 – 45

years (19.5%) saw declines of 10.2% and 9.3% respectively (See Chart 5).

The top ten source residences accounted for 93.7% of the total Central & South America traffic to Barbados in

2015.

Brazil accounted for 37.8% of business from this market, recording a 26.8% decrease. Venezuela followed with

21.8% of business, however the number of Venezuelan visitors increased by 59.8% when compared with 2014.

Collectively Brazil and Venezuela captured 59.6% of the total Central & South America traffic to Barbados. There

were some major changes in 2015’s top ten line up; Suriname was the only country other than the top two to

retain its position from 2014. It regained its title as the 5th major source country, capturing 4.9% of the arrivals.

Colombia, Belize and Panama advanced to the 3rd, 4th and 6th positions, which accounted for 7.2%, 5.1%, and

4.8% respectively. Mexico and Argentina dropped to 7th and 8th positions with 4.2% and 4.1% of the Central &

South American arrivals. Chile fell to number 10 while Costa Rica advanced to the number 9 spot in its place.

SEASONALITY OF ARRIVALS

The month of November had the least number of visitor arrivals for this market. November also had the largest

decrease in Central & South America arrivals for the year 2015, with a 50.3% decrease. September to November

had the biggest decreases for 2015 from this market. This decrease can be attributed to the spike in Brazilian

arrivals in 2014, which was a result of the GOL Special Rate Promotion as well as the Barbados Island Inclusive

(BII). The GOL promotion provided low airfare rates from all territories in Brazil and occurred during the same

period (August 27th, 2014 - December 12th, 2014) as the latter half of the BII programme. The highest number of

arrivals was recorded in January and July with 1,116 and 1,226 visitors respectively, which accounted for 21.7%

of this market’s share (see Chart 1). These months both had increases; however the month of July had the largest

increase for this market with a 60.9% increase while January had an increase of 15.1%. Of the July arrivals,

53.3% were from Brazil, 21.4% were from Venezuela and 4.6% originated from Panama (see Table 4).

PURPOSE OF VIST

The primary motivation for travel among Central & South America travellers continued to be pleasure, 60.3%

visited for this purpose (see Chart 3). This represented a decrease of 12.9% of business when compared with

2014. Of the total pleasure travellers 54.4% were from Brazil, 16.6% from Venezuela and 7.3% were from

Colombia (see Table 5). Business accounted for 14.1% of traffic, a decrease of 8% when compared with 2014.

The Conference segment (6.7%) was on the decline recording a 4.2% decrease. Of note although sports

accounted for only % of the share it recorded a % increase over 2014.

AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY AND TOURIST NIGHTS

Most Central & South American travellers stayed 7-10 days (37.1%), a decrease of 20% while 17.7% stayed 4-

6 days (see Chart 4). This segment of visitors recorded a decrease of 2.2% when compared with 2014. For

2015, Central & South America visitors spent a total of 98, 464 nights with an average length of stay of 9.1

Page 99: 2015 Annual Statistical Report - Visit Barbados

Research Department 2016

5

days. Those from Belize and Ecuador had the highest average stay with approximately 26 days each (see Table

6).

TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION

Hotels with over 100 rooms (33%) were the accommodation type most preferred by Central & South America

travellers (see Chart 7); this represented an increase of 25.2%. Of those who chose to stay in this type of

accommodation, 30.6% originated from Brazil, 29.7% from Venezuela and 7.4% from Panama (see Table 8).

Luxury stays accounted for 20.6%, an 18.5% decrease. Villas accounted for 10.6% of the share and increased

by 14.3%. The intimate properties weakened, accounting for 10.2% of business with decrease of 15.3%.

AGE & SEX DISTRIBUTIONS

Of the total Central & South America travellers in 2015, 60% were male and the remaining 40% were females

(see Chart 6).

In the age category the 36-45 age grouping dominated traffic with 26.1%, a 1.4% increase from 2014; while the

26-35 age grouping accounted for 21.6%, a decrease of 15%. Approximately % of the 36-45 age grouping

originated from Brazil (see Table 7). The 46-55 (19.4%) and 56-65 (11.7%) categories registered an increase of

5.6% and a decrease of 4.1% respectively. The 13-17 age grouping registered a 36.4% increase in business

when compared with the previous year (see Chart 5). An indication more families travelled in 2015 from this

market.
