Leonard Miller, Schmidt Construction Company, rappels down the Alamo Building for the JA “Over the Edge” September 6, 2014 fundraising event.
20 JA students from Beijing China travelled to Colorado Springs and partnered with 20 students from Harrison High School for a week of workshops, seminars and cultural events. Here two Chinese students work with the Colorado Springs students at the Center for Creative Leadership during their one week visit in July 2014.
William J Hybl shares his experience as a JA student in the JA Pueblo program in the 1950’s at the Junior Achievement of Southern Colorado, Inc. 60th Anniversary Celebration at El Pomar Foundation’s Penrose House on July 29, 2014. JA inducted 5 laureates into JA VISIONARIES: Jasper Ackerman, Harry Hoiles, Harry Hoth, Orin Loo, George Vradenburg II, all past JA Board Members
Board Chair’s LetterDear Community,
Junior Achievement provides young people with relevant, experiential programs based upon our three pillars of student success: workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
During the 2014-2015 school year, 28,385 K-12 students experienced JA in 209 schools throughout southern Colorado.
Junior Achievement is incorporating a blended learning approach into its programs, creating a scalable, relevant, and responsive student experience. By blending our current face-to-face approach with digital opportunities to access JA content, we can reach more students in more relevant ways that better accommodate students’ diverse learning styles and provide them with 21st century skills that will equip them to be successful in the global marketplace.
Junior Achievement works strategically with its corporate, education and foundation partners, such as those you will see highlighted in this annual report, to prepare young people for success both in the workplace and in their personal lives. We do this by helping them connect the dots between what they learn in school and how to apply such after graduation. Whether it is showing students how to successfully apply for a job, manage their money, or how to start and grow a business that creates jobs and drives innovation, JA is there, thanks to our local business and education partners.
We invite you to join us to achieve this important goal. Sincerely,
Scott ShollenbargerBoard Chair | Junior Achievementof Southern Colorado, Inc.

ElementaryStudents in kindergarten through fifth grade are introduced to the basic personal economic issues, and the role of families and social responsibility in the local economy. They examine planning decisions in a city, economic resources within states and regions, and how businesses need workers who can meet the demands of the job market. The After-School Program teaches personal financial and business skills through innovative and fun activities. The JA curriculum is designed to tie closely with state standards.
Middle SchoolAlready focusing on the importance of school and career, programs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade encompass business value and decisions while reinforcing the concepts of entrepreneurship and international trade.
High SchoolAs students’ interests and needs mature, the classroom focus turns to how economics relate to their lives. They learn basic financial planning, workplace ethics and skills such as budgeting and investing. And through a sophisticated online stimulation, many get first-hand experience in running a virtual business. JA volunteers provide positive adult role models and lead students toward workforce readiness.

Thursday May 14 saw blue skies with light winds and a touch of crisp spring air and Friday May 15 brought a few early afternoon showers and thunder ending the tournament 4 holes early. This was the first time 13 years the golfers did not finish both rounds. Golfers were treated to two days of world-class golf at the PGA-level course, luxurious overnight accommodations at the Castle Pines Cottages, meals prepared by the Castle Pines chef, and priceless camaraderie. The tournament agenda included a two-man, best-ball, Stableford Modified International scoring system.
Special thanks to our 2015 Castle Pines Golf Club Member Hosts, James B. Hayes and Austin Tilghman for inviting us to play at Castle Pines. Special thanks to Mr. Jack Vickers (a Junior Achievement Colorado Business Hall of Fame Laureate) for allowing us to play at the Castle Pines Golf Club. 2015 marked the 13th year of the Castle Pines – Junior Achievement Invitational. Net proceeds are approaching a half million dollars to benefit Junior Achievement of Southern Colorado, Inc. since the tournament started in 2002.
Congratulations to the 2015 Castle Pines – Junior Achievement Invitational Champions: the team of Bruce Johnson and Sloane Stricker.
