2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE REPORT Written by Kim Wishon, MBA, FACMPE, Chair, 2015 Annual Conference Committee
The 2015 AAOE Annual Conference prepared members for managing the
industry landscape and better positioned them to implement the ongoing
industry changes impacting their groups. The Annual Conference held in
Chicago, Illinois, saw the highest conference attendance since 2007, with 600
attendees, and the largest exhibitor showcase with over 150 vendors in more
than 180 booths. Additionally, sponsorships saw a large jump in support – an
almost 40% increase over the 2014 Annual Conference. Without our exhibitor
and sponsor support, AAOE would be unable to maintain our low registration
rates and we are most appreciative of their continued support.
Chicago’s keynote speakers included the incomparable, Jeffrey Tambor,
veteran of film, television, and Broadway. He is one of the most iconic and
respected character actors of his generation. One of his most notable roles was
as George Bluth, Sr., in Arrested Development. General session and lunch speaker, Jonathan Bush, CEO
and President of athenahealth, provided the playbook for “Doing the Right Thing”. His talk focused on his
call for a revolution in healthcare – one which gives patients more choice, power, and information, at far
lower prices. Noah Blumenthal, author of the nationally bestselling book, Be the Hero, was the closing
keynote speaker, and inspired members to overcome any adversity and perform at their best.
The social events provided several avenues for attendees to meet new members and get reacquainted
with old friends. With Chicago’s unique and wide-range of excellent dining options, members were
able to participate in a Dine Around, sampling appetizers, main course, and desserts from different
restaurants. The iconic Chicago House of Blues created a brand new experience for the opening
reception with three floors and two main stages featuring both blues and jazz.

TREASURER’S REPORT Written by Ron Chorzewski, PT, MBA, 2015 Treasurer
I was once again honored to serve the organization as the treasurer for an
exciting year at the AAOE. I would like to commend the entire AAOE staff
and the leadership of Addy Kujawa, CAE as they have all worked diligently to
further our mission and numerous initiatives. In doing so, they have finished the
2015 year within 2% of the annual budget; a remarkable performance given
the growth of our advocacy, benchmarking, and conference efforts.
Here are some highlights of our financial performance in three different areas:
member services, annual conference, and the performance of our Short Term
Investment Funds. From a historical perspective, income from our annual
conference covers administrative losses with member services. This year was
no exception as our conference profit of $329,062 more than compensated for
our member services segment loss of $230,398.
In terms of our Short Term Investment Funds, we experienced a loss of $7,760 or 0.7% through 2015.
This was the result of disappointing market performance relative to our investment portfolio. We
finished the year with 55% of our investments in fixed income, 40% in equities, and 5% in cash/money
accounts.
It is worthy to mention that, according to the AAOE Financial Policies and Procedures, the organization
is expected to have funds equal to 50% of its annual budget in Short Term Investment Funds and 50%
of its annual budget in Operational Cash. This is an important point that speaks to why the organization
has significant monies in reserve. We finished 2015 with 48% of our annual budget of $1,913,181 in
Operational Reserves and 62% of our annual budget in our Short Term Investment Funds.
Lastly, I would like to commend AAOE President Jim Kidd, CMPE, Addy Kujawa, CAE, and the entire
board for their efforts to create a balanced budget for 2016 that allows the organization to continue to
grow. The future is bright for the AAOE.

AAOE GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS Written by Paul Bruning, DHA
The AAOE Advocacy Council has been busy during 2015, providing
membership with valuable information regarding legislative and regulatory
occurrences. Brad Coffey (AAOE Governmental Affairs Manager) continues
to provide exceptional reviews and comprehensive analysis of legislative and
regulatory bills, rulings, and recommendations. Coffey Talk remains a weekly
staple for orthopaedic executives interested in governmental activity.
This year also saw a change in The OrthoActivist publisher. Doctors
Management provides content excellence monthly and delivers a visually
compelling product. Ron O’Neil leads the group of editors in providing subject
matter excellence to insure members receive relevant and well written articles.
Joel James has been instrumental in staying on top
of legislation under review in Congress. His expertise
and connections have helped AAOE stay in front of
bills that may influence the practice of musculoskeletal
care. Along with Brad, Joel has helped author several
letters to Congress and initiated several action alerts
to comment on IOAS, MU, CJR, and several other
issues that continue to be monitored.
Mike Doyle has been a critical addition to the
Advocacy Council. His knowledge of regulatory rules
have added to the skills of the Advocacy Council. He
has also brought new blood and vision as part of a
hospital based orthopedic group.
The entire council has provided valuable time,
commitment, and knowledge to benefit and enhance
orthopaedic administrative practice. Their efforts
are greatly appreciated and important to the future
success of the AAOE and musculoskeletal practice.
Paul Bruning, DHA Advocacy Council,
Chair

EDUCATION COUNCIL Written by Jeanetta Lawrence, MBA, FACMPE, CPC, CPMA, CMRS
For the Education Council, 2015 was an exciting year. We worked hard to
incorporate education, tools, and resources not just for CEOs and senior
management, but that provided information and choices for our mid-level
managers and staff, as well as our physician members. To assist with physician
education, we welcomed an orthopaedic surgeon to the council for the first
time. We partnered with DoctorsManagement and AAOE organization
member, Signature Medical Group to offer two hot topic series:
• ICD-10: this webinar series included a 10-part series for administrative
staff as well as a 10-part series geared specifically to orthopaedic surgeons.
• CJR: this webinar series included a 3-part series on CJR and its impact
on members.
For our sponsors, we offered a new opportunity, a 3-part
webinar sponsorship, which provided more exposure
and value for a reduced rate. Our sponsors are a key
part of the online education program – they’re the only
reason we can offer so many webinar topics at no cost
to our members. I’d like to thank our sponsors, and also
our council members that worked diligently all year to
partner with their vendors to support our education.
AAOE staff ensured that the webinars were approved
for CEUs, resulting in an educational lineup of over 20
CEUs at no cost to AAOE members that could be earned
by members and also their staff. Overall, the council
provided over 40 webinars in 2015, with almost 8,000
registrations (not unique, but as a combined total), and
double the sponsorship/registration revenue of 2014.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S LOOK AHEAD Written by Addy M. Kujawa, CAE, Chief Executive Officer
The future is very bright as AAOE continues to grow and add value to
membership with new and exciting offerings that complement the already
solid foundation of core products and services. The strategic plan outlines our
trajectory and I’m going to build on that a bit so you can see where we expect to
be within that plan by year end.
Advocacy: By the end of 2016, all work is planned to be completed for
adding the 501(c)6 organization, the American Alliance of Orthopaedic
Executives. We’ve held four webinar town halls at different times of the day
to accommodate your busy schedules, and have the recordings posted to our
website for reference. The communications plan will be complete and bylaws
will have been voted on at the AAOE Annual Conference. If all goes according to plan, your membership
renewal notice in October will come from the new organization and that organization will be official by
January 1, 2017.
Data Analytics: By the end of 2016, the Benchmarking Survey will include trending data, enhanced
reports based on member feedback, and a plan to expand how AAOE supports its members with data.
We’re looking at education about why surveys are important, how to gather the right information,
understanding the survey(s), and most importantly, how to use them. We’ve all heard the phrase, “data
is king”, and we’re going to be sure the orthopaedic community has the data it needs for orthopaedic
surgeons to practice the way they want to practice (independent, multi-specialty, academic, hospital),
and to work toward reducing the administrative burden on practice executives.
Membership: To help spread the word about AAOE and increase the membership, the Membership
Council and the State Societies Committee are discussing ways to partner. The goal is to bring value to
both state and national members, while helping to grow the memberships of all involved.
Education: The Education Council is already working on plans for a few different webinar series,
including a practice management 101 webinar program. A core curriculum is also being discussed and
will be fully developed in the next year or two. This core curriculum will drive all of AAOE’s educational
programming so we can ensure consistency, quality, timeliness, and the depth and breadth needed by
members. This focus will ensure we are providing education to all member types and levels.
Staff Certification: The Committee is already hard at work on the casting program, adding a Subject
Matter Experts Task Force to develop a quality education program that is broadly endorsed by

Council and Committee Accomplishments
Staff Certification Committee
• The Committee has voted to move forward with a certificate training course, in order to initiate procedures
(manuals, testing, skills sign-off, etc.) and identify market demand, before moving onto a more-thorough national
certification process.
• The Committee has selected cast application / removal as the subject of the first certificate program, and subject
matter experts have been identified and meetings are being held weekly to create manual for learning purposes
(Draft manual completed May 2016).
• The Committee is currently investigating possibilities for partnerships for the certificate program,
or endorsements from other professional organizations, which would give instant credibility to the
certificate program.
• Depending on demand and further analysis, the Committee would recommend moving forward with a
certification process and making the casting certificate a piece of that overall certification.
Structure & Governance Committee
• Developed an annual volunteer program.
• Streamlined the organizational structure of councils and committees.
