At Junior Achievement of Central Upstate New York, our goal is to transform the preparedness of our youth and inspire them to achieve their own American Dream. We believe that together, we can prepare an entire generation to be financially capable -- equipped with 21st century skills to think outside the box, manage risk effectively, and welcome opportunity in a complex modern economy. It’s more than just our mission. It’s a movement, and there is a lot riding on its success. We know that financial illiteracy plays a key role in a cycle of unemployment and poverty, and the downward spiral begins in earnest for those who don’t graduate. At the same time, employers need to fill well-paying jobs with qualified candidates and the entrepreneurial spirit must create new and innovative jobs for our community to thrive. After 47 years in our region, these needs are no longer filled by your grandparent’s JA. Today’s JA experiences extend far beyond small businesses and lemonade stands. JA’s robust K-12 programs combine cutting edge technology with expert mentorship, global engagement, state-of-the-art simulations and exposure to 21st century entrepreneurial tools. JA students have multiple opportunities to test their skills and be rewarded for it.In the pages that follow, you will get a glimpse of today’s JA. For the hundreds of volunteers, donors and educators that have already joined this movement, we are sincerely grateful. For those of you just learning about it, we need your help. Together we CAN empower this generation to be better prepared for success than any other generation in history. – Patricia J. Leva, President & CEO

JA PROGRAMS

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLJA’s sequential elementary

curricula provides a hands-on way for students

to explore their roles as citizens, employees and

consumers in our economy, and the relevance of their

core subject areas to future success.

MIDDLE SCHOOLJA’s middle grades

programs help students better understand

the complexities of our economy and the challenging financial

choices that lie ahead, so they can make informed

decisions about college, careers, and staying

in school.

HIGH SCHOOLThere is no more important

a time to reinforce the financial literacy, workforce and entrepreneurial skills

that JA teaches than during a student’s high

school years, immediately before they take their first

steps toward their own American Dream.

THE COMMUNITYJA programs and resources

extend well beyond delivery in a classroom.

JA works with community partners like Hillside Work Scholarship,

Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation, CSS

Workforce New York and many others.

Created in 2015 by the JA Board of Directors, the Larry & Jane Glazer Scholarship is provided to one student who

represents the enduring qualities and ethics of the late couple (Rochester Business Hall of Fame Class of 2006 and 2014 respectively) and who is committed to helping impact the future of Rochester. This year’s recipient was Aidee Zorrilla from Vanguard Collegiate.

JA students achieved more than

$192,000 in cash and scholarships in the 2014-15 academic year

Impressed by the tenacity and work ethic of the Turning Points 2 interview of Joe Bucci, William John Hitchcock III from Livonia Central

Schools scheduled a personal meeting to learn more. William wrote in his winning essay, “He gave me some very unique insights into the world of starting and running a business. Our conversation had deep impact on me, and he helped me decide on the industry that I want to contribute to in the future.”Thanks to donations by Randy Schuster, Turning Points 2 is utilized as part of several JA high school programs.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Jim Perra from Bishop Grimes High School, received a full tuition scholarship to SU for 2015-2019 as

a result of his JA experience. Jim said, “Participating in the JA Company Program has been one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. It has given me so many real-world tools and skills that I will undoubtedly use in the future. I also

want to thank my mentors from Bank of NY Mellon. Without them, I would

not have learned many valuable lessons of responsibility, work ethic

and the facets of entrepreneurship.”The JA/SU Scholarship has been available to JA students for over

three decades.

― ― ― LARRY & JANE GLAZER ―

JA Company Program participants from BOCES New Visions Business Academy in Binghamton, New York, received top honors, as they were chosen as one of only 12 companies throughout the country to participate in the National

Student Leadership Summit in Washington, DC in June 2015. The BOCES New Visions Business Academy students pitched their enterprise, 9 Roots, a consumer products company, to a panel of judges and also attended seminars and networked with entrepreneurs and politicians. Special thanks to their mentors, Scott Weissmann, VP, M&T Bank and David Culbertson, CEO, National Pipe & Plastics.

JA COMPANYPROGRAMThe top two student-led enterprises from the National Student Leadership Summit had a unique entrepreneurial discussion with President Obama in October 2015.
