FOUNDATION FOR PM&R
The Foundation for PM&R is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring health, im-proving function, minimizing pain and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disability through research and education in the field of PM&R
VisionThe Foundation for PM&R envisions a health care system in the United States where function is a valued measure of health, physiatric care is fully integrated into the con-tinuum of care, and there is full access to cost-effective evidence-based rehabilitative care.
Values• Research is key to advancing the medical specialty of PM&R.• Patient-centered practice is essential.• The ability to function and quality of life are key outcome
measures in the management of illness, injury or disease.• Interdisciplinary research is required to achieve the
best possible outcomes for individuals with disability.• Investment in young investigators that fosters their
pursuit of a career in research and provides them with the tools to succeed, enhances the research capacity of the field of PM&R.
• Increasing physiatric research capacity in medical schools and teaching hospitals improves PM&R research capacity.
• The specialty of PM&R is strongest when the overarch-ing interests of those who focus on inpatient medical rehabilitation and those who concentrate on outpatient and/or musculoskeletal care converge and are seen as parts of a whole.
• All practitioners and stakeholders have a responsibility to fund the Foundation for PM&R, because the Founda-tion supports the future of PM&R...both for practitioners and for the patients we serve.

2015 ANNUAL REPORT
Dexanne B. Clohan MD
“Please carefully consider how you can leverage your professional ex-pertise and finan-cial resources to drive the future of our field and our patients through the Foundation.”
Message From the President
I’m very proud of the impact your donation is having on our field through the Foundation for PM&R. We’re providing start-up support to a new generation of researchers and seeking answers to important questions on how physiatrists can facilitate improvements in our patients’ function and quality of life.
As you look through this annual report, I’m sure you will be proud of the wide range of strategic programs supported by your gift to the Founda-tion for PM&R. You can be confident your gift is managed wisely; we keep expenses low, and depend on volunteers to drive our board and committees.
For busy people like us, charitable giving is driven not only by who asks us for help, but also wheth-er it gets lost in an overflowing e-mail inbox or stack of mail. Research and education in PM&R is too important to be relegated to such vagaries.
Please carefully consider how you can leverage your professional expertise and financial resources to drive the future of our field and our patients through the Foundation. I hope you will experi-ence the gratification of playing a growing part of this important enterprise.
Thank you for your support of the Foundation! Together we can do even more in 2016.

FOUNDATION FOR PM&R
From the Executive Director
Phyllis J. Anderson, MA
“As a donation-based organization, it is impossible to ‘guarantee’ our revenues every
year, even though our expenses
remain constant.”
Every year brings new challenges and opportu-nities; 2015 was one of the most challenging to date for the Foundation. Previously, the Founda-tion had a long history of growth, adding to re-serves each year while continuing to increase our research grant support.
Yet as a donation-based organization, it is im-possible to “guarantee” our revenues every year, even though our expenses remain constant. In 2015 the Foundation’s investments experienced the worst performance since 2009 and we had a downturn in the overall number of donors (al-though the number of donors who gave over $1,000 grew by 38%!) A grant from a usual cor-porate supporter did not come through, and for the first time since 2010, no major gift ($25,000 or more) was received. These factors combined to create a “perfect storm” of financial distress in 2015, and we had to fall back on our reserves.
As difficult as it is to weather a perfect storm, the Foundation’s overall track record is and will continue to be one of growth and success. At this point we need your help to increase unre-stricted fund balances, which will allow us to con-tinue to pursue our bigger vision for the future.
I am counting on YOU to show your commitment to the future of physiatry through your generous support of the Foundation for PM&R!

Research for the Future
From our start, the primary focus of the Foundation for PM&R’s programs and activities has been physiatric research.
Our current top goals are:
Drive the Evidence Base for Cost-effective, Outcomes-oriented Rehabilitative Care
Cultivate the Next Generation of Physiatric Researchers
Build Physiatric Research Capacity
![Page 9: 2015 Annual Report - Foundation for PM&Rfoundationforpmr.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2015r...2015 ANNUAL REPORT Dexanne B. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
A task force was appointed in 2015 to identify research priorities that will guide the Foundation’s research support and answer vital questions in physiatric care.
Five key areas were identified:
Chronic Pain
Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation
Spinal Cord Injury
Stroke, and
Traumatic Brain Injury
Specific questions have been dev-eloped in each area. We will expand our grants program to meet these needs.
“The Scott
Nadler PASSOR
Musculoskeletal
Research Grants
I received
provided the
necessary funds for statistical analysis
of my first two major research efforts.
Without the grants, neither project would
have been completed. The 2010 grant
led to two national and two international
platform presentations and my first NIH
grant submission.”

Physiatric Research Consulting
With support from the Foundation for PM&R, the Association of Academic Physiatry imple-mented a Physiatric Res-earch Consulting Program in 2014 to provide customized assist-ance for instit-utions committed to improving or developing a physiatric research program.
In 2015, two site visits took place: at the University of Utah Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation.
“The visit was ben-
eficial for several
reasons: It brought
our group together
to focus in a brief
period of time. It
provided us with
actionable items. It also provided a plat-
form for administration and investigators
to be involved with discussions and
recommendations. We had experts in the
area devote an extended period of time
and energy to our site. The site visitors
asked great questions to elicit the infor-
mation they needed. We appreciated the
direction that they provided in identifying
and validating areas of research.”

Proof of the Pudding Debate
The “Proof of the Pudding” Debate was held on Thursday, October 1 from 9:00 to 9:30 PM. The standing-room-only crowd enjoyed coffee and dessert while listening to a lively debate on the use of interdiscal steroid injection in the treatment of low back pain. Foundation Treasurer Dr. George Kevorkian served as moderator for the debate.
Dr. Bradley Goodman, Department of PM&R, University of Alabama at Birmingham, supported the use of intra-discal steroid injection as an alternative in patients who have been unresponsive to conservative and other inter-ventional treatments.
Dr. Gwen Sowa, Department of PM&R, University of Pittsburgh, presented evidence against the use of intra-discal steroid injection based on the lack of clinical evi-dence of efficacy as well as the associated risks of the procedure.
After the opportunity for rebuttal, the mic was opened up for questions from the floor.
The Foundation for PM&R appreciates the cooperation of the PM&R journal in selecting this topic from their Point/Counterpoint articles. It originally appeared in PM&R Vol-ume 6 Issue 6, June 2014; 547-555. We are also grate-ful to our Treasurer, Dr. George Kevorkian, who started this debate and provided a restricted grant to continue the program annually.

2015 ANNUAL REPORT
Americans with Disabilities Fund
29
Fitness is an even greater challenge to people with disabilities than to the overall population. The ADF is commit-ted to helping physiatrists and people with dis-abilities work together to over-come this gap. Our first step will be to pro-vide PM&R physi-cians with a tool to “prescribe“ exercise to their patients with dis-abilities.
We are also building a dedi-cated web page that will serve as a comprehensive resource on exer-cise, fitness and adapted sport for individuals with disabilities.
“Not allowing for full
integration [of people with
disabilities] into all high-
quality-of-life aspects of
America was folly for the
patient, all citizens, and
for the ‘American Way.’”

“In Honor of” GiftsHonor a mentor, colleague or family member with a donation in their name. They will receive a card informing them of the gift, and you will receive a donor acknowledgment letter for tax purposes.
Gifts of Appreciated StockYou can realize tax benefits by donating appreciated assets (such as stock or mutual fund shares) to the Foundation. You will likely be exempt from federal or state taxes on those capital gains, and you are making a donation that is more than what you initially paid for the stock or mutual fund. If your securities have decreased in value, you can offset capital gains by deducting the loss, as well as the cash donation.
Charitable Gift Annuity A Charitable Gift Annuity makes it possible for you to receive high returns on an asset for the rest of your life, and ultimately results in a charitable contribution to the Foundation for PM&R. A contribution of cash, stocks or bonds can be put into a gift annuity that will send you annual payments for life (or, if you prefer, the agreement can run for the lives of you and your spouse.) Contact the Foundation office for additional information.
“In Lieu of Flowers” RequestLet your friends and family know, and put a note in your will, that you would like contributions to be made in your name upon your death in lieu of flowers.
Simple Bequest When preparing your will, please include a contribution to the Foundation for PM&R in the distribution of assets. Whether a specific dollar amount or percentage of as-sets, your estate planner or attorney can help you decide on the appropriate level of support you wish to bequeath. Inform the Foundation office and we will include you in our Legacy Club, and you can find out more about a gift agreement to direct the use of the contribution.
Named BeneficiaryYou can elect to name the Foundation for PM&R as the beneficiary of any life insur-ance policy or IRA that you may own. Inform the Foundation office and we will include you in our Legacy Club, and you can find out more about a gift agreement to direct the use of the contribution.
