The Illinois Center for Autism Annual Report | 2015
Executive Director’s Message “Welcome to the Illinois Center for Autism”…..music to my ears for the past 29 years. There is nothing more promising, as the autism numbers climb, than to have so many families, donors, supporters and volunteers believe in our mission. In this report, you will find out just how many children and adults we nurture through our programs each year. Some will move on and others will remain for many years. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those we serve, as well as their families. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our organization. The Illinois Center for Autism is celebrating 38 years of service and dedication to individuals and families who are living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Each day, my staff and I have the wonderful opportunity to embrace the wisdom, courage, charisma, and the uniqueness of each of the individuals that we serve. Each day I am honored, amazed and humbled by the successes of our clients; as well as, our staff. We work diligently to offer the most successful opportunities for each and every one of our clients and it is because of the dedication and commitment of our staff, our donors, and our volunteers, that I can make this promise. It is our belief, that every one of our clients is unique, defined only by possibilities and not by their limitations. We offer education, training and services specifically designed to meet the needs of our clients. We do this in the least restrictive environment through the use of innovative research based methods and practices, an interactive and engaging atmosphere, a positive approach to maladaptive behaviors, advocacy and choice to promote self-‐sufficiency and lifelong independence, customized support services and training; and our services are provided by qualified staff who receive ongoing, specialized training. My door is always open to anyone who has an interest in our organization; either as family members, applicants, or prospective donors… Sincerely,
Susan Susan Szekely Executive Director

Mission To educate and serve children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder to help them achieve their highest level of independence in their home, school and community.
We achieve our mission through three primary programs designed specifically to work with the full range of developmental disabilities associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) including the most challenging behaviors. We do this on an individual basis, determined by the needs of each client.
Special Day School Program The Illinois Center for Autism’s (ICA) Special Day School Program is Illinois State Board of Education approved and offers year round educational programming to students between the ages of 3 and 22
diagnosed with autism, cognitive disabilities, specific learning disabilities, speech-‐language impairments, emotional disabilities, other health impairments and developmental delays.
Each student placed at ICA has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) developed to meet his/her specific learning needs. The IEP contains goals that focus on educational acquisition as well as developing independence, social skills, meaningful communication skills and appropriate behavior. The IEP is implemented by Illinois certified special education teachers with the support of teaching assistants, who are Illinois certified regular education teachers, and teaching aides, who are Illinois certified paraprofessionals. Speech and language services are provided by Illinois licensed speech/language pathologists. The Illinois Center for Autism's Special School Program is comprised of two campuses. Our Fairview Heights program supports our adolescent students in 9 classrooms. Our Belleville Campus supports our elementary students in 6 classrooms. In addition to services provided at our Fairview Heights and Belleville campuses, ICA has also developed relationships with local educational districts to provide services to students in the public school setting through the creation of satellite classrooms.
Year Highlight: Absenteeism & Belleville Playground *In 2015, we began serving breakfast and lunch to all of our school-‐age children, we have had a 28% decrease in absenteeism, since the beginning of the free meals program. *Through various grants and volunteers, updates were made to our playground at our Belleville campus and a more secure fence was installed around the playground area. Our elementary age students now enjoy up to two recesses per day during fair-‐weather days on their updated and safe playground.

Adult Services The purpose of the Adult Services program is to facilitate and address the needs of a growing population of adults with ASD. Services include facilitation of vocational skills training, independent living skills, transportation training and recreational and leisure activities. Our adult services program provides communication skills support, social skills training, and supportive employment services.
As a day services program, the goal is to promote a self-‐sufficient and satisfying life for persons who need intensive structure. The program provides meaningful and applicable training to each individual. We create an interactive and engaging atmosphere where learning and growth can be fostered through structured skills training and evidence based practices. An Individual Service Plan is developed at intake; it is implemented, and updated on an annual basis.
Year Highlight: Successful implementation of our School Breakfast/Lunch Program *Every student in our Special Day School Program now receives, at no cost to the families, a breakfast and a lunch daily. These meals are prepared and served by Pasta Fare, an enterprise of the Illinois Center for Autism, where many of the adults in our program are employed. *The Adults are learning about growing and utilizing the produce from their gardens.
Client & Family Support Services Our Client/Family Support Program offers a wide array of services based on individual choice. These services are delivered by staff experienced in working with individuals with ASD. The Services provided are respectful of cultural structures and values. These may include but are not limited to race, cognitive ability, ethnicity, social and/or economic status, living arrangements, sexual preferences, age, gender and/or religion. Client/Family Support Program provides information and linkage to services for persons with ASD, families and service providers.
Year Highlight: Social Skills Growth *The adult social club Face to Face has
seen a 34% growth over the last year.
*A Responsible Decision making course was created and offered to the public and to ICA students.
*We recorded and uploaded 5 podcasts related to Parenting Your Asperger’s Child.

The Illinois Center for Autism Annual Report | 2015
The Illinois Center for Autism typically serves the most severe or difficult behaviors across the autism spectrum.
We believe that each individual is unique and defined by possibilities and not limitations. Individuals have the right
to education, training and/or services specifically designed to meet his/her needs in the least restrictive environment
through the use of:
Innovative, research based methods and practices
An interactive and engaging atmosphere
Advocacy and choice to promote self-‐sufficiency and lifelong independence
A positive approach to maladaptive behaviors
Customized support services and training offered to individuals, families and the
community
Services provided by qualified staff who receive ongoing, specialized training
When, and only when, it is necessary to restrain an individual to keep them from harming themselves or others,
do we intervene. The percentage of the number of restraints has consistently gone down over the past four years.
Since 2012, our restraints have decreased by 30%. This is attributed to specialized staff training and the previously
mentioned positive approach to maladaptive behaviors.

Our Donors
We change the lives of children and their families because of the generosity of people who care – people like you. The more than 400 people we serve have goals and dreams, much like you and I. We receive funding from a variety of sources, but, unfortunately, it’s not enough to ensure that all of the necessary services are available. Services that will help our individuals achieve some of those dreams…consider helping to change a life forever; like the
hundreds who already support our mission. Thank you!

Volunteer and Make a Difference Our volunteer program is certified by the United Way and provides a variety of opportunities for those anxious to “lend a helping hand”. We maintain over 100 volunteers annually who participate in our fundraisers, in our classrooms and in our offices. It takes a very special person to give of their time and a special effort to continue to do so. We are very grateful to those who do. Whether you prefer to sit back and read to a child, be hands-‐on at one of our many fundraising events, or be creative and/or industrious in an office or classroom atmosphere – we have a need for YOU!
o Volunteer at one of our fundraising events. o Volunteer to work in a classroom with a child with autism (you will be trained).
o Volunteer to answer phones and help with office work.
Please visit our website at http://www.illinoiscenterforautism.org/volunteer.php to learn more, call the office at 618.398.7500 or send this form by mail to our office at 548 S. Ruby Lane, Fairview Heights, IL 62208
