On behalf of the Frozen Food Foundation Board of Directors and Officers, it’s our

pleasure to present the Foundation’s 2015 Annual Report. Whether through scientific research or community events, this report highlights the tremendous success the Frozen Food Foundation achieved in 2015 to enhance the public’s perception of frozen foods. The Foundation engaged key influencers to help them better appreciate how, and why, frozen foods play an integral part of their diets by promoting the results of the Foundation-commissioned nutritional studies conducted by the Universities of Georgia and California-Davis.

The Foundation once again hosted two educational and fundraising events in a public display of the frozen food industry’s commitment to health and wellness.

The 2015 5K Fun Run & Walk welcomed more than 100 runners and walkers and the Foundation hosted the sixth annual Frozen

Food Foundation Golf Classic presented by Simplot at Oak Creek Golf Course.

You can read more about these events, and the significant strides the Foundation made in promoting science-based information about the nutritional, safety and societal attributes of frozen foods, further in this Annual Report.

Lastly, we’d like to thank the generosity of our contributors for allowing the Foundation to engage in such critically important work. Thank you to all who have committed to ensuring the Foundation’s continued growth.

If you haven’t already done so, we encourage you to help support the Foundation’s work. It is our sincere hope to see all of us in the frozen food industry commit to supporting the Frozen Food Foundation.

Sincerely,

Dick GraderChair

Promoting Frozen Food Facts

The Frozen Food Foundation is dedicated to fostering scientific research, public awareness and industry education

regarding the nutritional, safety and societal attributes of frozen foods for the benefit of the common good. In 2015, the Foundation engaged key influencers to help them better appreciate how, and why, frozen foods play an integral part of their diets.

The Frozen Food Foundation, along with the Canned Food Alliance and Can Manufacturers Institute hosted an all forms of fruits and vegetables luncheon to promote the nutritional benefits of all forms of fruits and vegetables, including frozen and canned, and to encourage their inclusion in federal feeding and nutrition programs.

Nearly 50 key congressional staff, federal agency personnel from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, key influencers, such as the American Heart Association, and inside-the-Beltway press were in attendance.

Congressional staff, federal agency personnel and key influencers were in attendance to learn about the nutritional benefits of all forms of fruits and vegetables, including frozen.

Attendees enjoyed a lunch comprised of all forms of fruits and vegetables that meet dietary guideline recommendations, including grilled chicken marinated in frozen blueberries.

University of Georgia (UGA) Associate Professor Dr. Ronald B. Pegg shared the results of the Foundation’s nutrition comparison project, which demonstrates that frozen fruits and vegetables are as rich in nutrients, and often more so, than their fresh counterparts. In addition to Dr. Pegg, Dr. Elizabeth Pivonka of the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) and Rebecca Scritchfield of Capitol Nutrition Group discussed the important role all forms of fruits and vegetables, whether fresh, frozen, canned, dried or 100 percent juice can play in building and maintaining healthy and sustainable eating habits. Attendees were served meals comprised of a variety of frozen and canned ingredients, showcasing their versatility and practicality in preparing nutritious meals that meet federal guidelines.

In addition, the Foundation’s nutrition comparison study with the University of California-Davis (UC Davis) was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The results of the study found that the nutritional value of frozen fruits and vegetables are generally equal to, and in some cases better than, their fresh counterparts.

The study, conducted by lead researcher Dr. Diane Barrett of UC Davis, used methodologies designed to eliminate discrepancies in the harvesting, handling and storage of fruits and vegetables used in the analysis. Like produce found in farmers’ markets, the fruits and vegetables used in the study were locally grown, harvested and stored by the UC Davis research team. Each fruit and vegetable was analyzed under the following conditions: frozen (analyzed within 24 hours of harvest and after 10 and 90 days of storage in a freezer) and fresh stored (analyzed 24 hours of harvest and after three and 10 days of storage in a refrigerator). From left to right: Capitol Nutrition Group CEO Rebecca Scritchfield,
