One of the nation’s most respected track & field mentors, Michael Friess is in his 25th season

as head coach of the cross country and track & field programs at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2014-15 . In 10 seasons of full institutional sponsorship, the

Seawolf track & field teams have quickly left their mark on the Great North-west Athletic Conference under Friess, earning five individual NCAA titles, 62 All-America awards and 127 individual conference titles . Friess has also piloted the track & field squads to success on a national level, qualifying athletes to the NCAAs since 2001. A program-record 12 Seawolves competed at the Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2013 . In 2013 at the oudoor championships, the women’s team posted a program-best seventh-place finish, while the men’s team broke the top 10 in 2012, finishing ninth. Since joining the GNAC in 2001, UAA’s cross country teams have com-bined for 23 top-three team finishes at the conference meet, 12 league titles, one NCAA champion, 25 All-Americans, 10 individual conference titles and 75 all-conference certificates. Currently, the women’s team has posted a league-record five straight titles from 2009-13, while the men’s team has registered four back-to-back titles from 2010-13 . The Seawolves have been no stranger to the NCAA Championships under Friess’ guidance, having qualified a team for the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships 18 times overall, including sending both the men’s and women’s squads in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Friess has earned 16 conference coach-of-the-year accolades in cross country, including five straight women’s coach-of-the-year honors from 2009-13, while furnishing seven GNAC honors in track & field. Additionally, Friess has collected nine West Re-gion Coach of the Year honors - six in cross country and three in track & field. Athletes have excelled in the classroom as well under Friess, earning 181 academic all-conference accolades over the last 13 seasons . Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams have combined for 16 U .S . Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team recognitions since 2005, while both track & field teams have made the All-Academic Team each year since 2009. Additionally, five student-athletes have been named Capital One/CoSida Academic All-Americans . Friess graduated from Linfield (Ore.) College with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 1985 and was an NAIA All-American distance runner for the Wildcats . He earned a master’s degree in sport biomechanics from the University of Oregon in 1986 . A graduate of Anchorage’s Dimond High, Friess remains active in the local running community as a competi-tor, coach and organizer . Some of the events Friess organizes include the Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon & Half-Marathon and the Crow Pass Crossing . A USA Track & Field Level II coach, Friess is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is certified by ACSM as an exercise test technologist and exercise specialist. He and his wife Stephanie have two children, Meagan – a former Seawolf track & field athlete – and Steven.

F T.J. GARLATZaSSiStant CoaCH — 8tH SeaSon

T .J . Garlatz is in his eighth season as an assistant coach with Alaska Anchorage’s

cross country and track & field programs in 2014-15 . In addition to his coaching duties with the Seawolves, Garlatz serves as an as-sistant for compliance .

Since joining UAA for the 2007-08, Garlatz has helped the cross country program produce one NCAA champion, 24 All-American per-formances, nine individual conference champions and 50 all-conference certificates. Additionally, the men’s and women’s team each have five conference titles and have qualified for the NCAAs every year since 2008 . In track & field, Garlatz has helped coach five NCAA individual champions, 60 All-American finishes and 118 GNAC individual wins. Nationally, Garlatz has sent multiple athletes to the championship meet, while collecting top-20 team perfor-mances for the men’s team since 2008 . In 2013 at the outdoor championships, the women’s team posted a program-best seventh-place finish, while the men’s team broke the top 10 in 2011, finishing ninth. Garlatz was also honored in 2010 when he was named the U .S . Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Associa-tion West Region Assistant Coach of the Year . Garlatz came to the Seawolves after serving as an assistant coach at GNAC rival Western Washington for three seasons . While at WWU, Garlatz helped guide the Vikings to a conference title in men’s cross country (2006), two men’s indoor track & field conference championships (2005, 2006) and one GNAC title in men’s outdoor track & field (2005). A postgraduate athlete at WWU, Garlatz competed in both cross country and track & field for one season, help-ing lead the Vikings to the 2003 GNAC cross country title . He also earned an individual conference champion-ship in the 10,000-meter run at the 2003 outdoor track & field championships. Prior to his coaching stint at WWU, Garlatz served as an assistant coach with the cross country and track & field programs at Inglemoor High School (Kenmore, Wash.) from Sept. 1998 to June 2003. The former NCAA Division II Academic All-American earned a bachelor’s of arts in mathematics from the University of Washington in 2002 and a master’s of science in exercise Science from WWU in 2007 . He and his wife Kristin were married in 2010 .

RYAN MCWILLIAMSaSSiStant CoaCH - 5tH SeaSon

Ryan McWilliams commences his fourth season as an assistant cross country and

track & field coach and fifth overall in 2014-15. McWilliams, who works primarily with the sprinters, jumpers and multi-eventers, served as

a graduate assistant for the Seawolves for two seasons before being pro-moted to assistant in 2012 . In just a short time at UAA, McWilliams has helped produce four All-Americans, including guiding then-sophomore Cody Parker to UAA’s fourth NCAA individual title with a GNAC-record toss of 255-10 in the javelin in 2013 . McWilliams has also led All-Americans Karolin Anders (hept.) and Franz Burghagen (javelin), who each finished runner-up in their respective events at the 2014 NCAA championships . McWilliams joined UAA after a decorated career at Angelo State Uni-versity from 2005-09 . From Alpine, Texas, McWillams registered six top-10 finishes at the NCAAs as a student-athlete, including three All-America honors in the decathlon and two in the 110 hurdles . The Rams’ team captain ended his career with a runner-up finish in the decathlon, seventh in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the mile relay at the 2009 NCAA Div . II Championships . McWilliams graduated from ASU in 2009 with a major in kinesiology and exercise science and is currently working on a master’s in public health at UAA . He and his wife, Amber, have two children .

ANTHONY TOMSICHaSSiStant CoaCH - 4tH SeaSon

Anthony Tomsich is in his second season at UAA as an assistant coach in 2014-15 after

serving as an graduate assistant for two seasons with the cross country and track & field teams.

Tomsich is a former runner from GNAC foe Western Washington University and grew up in

Fairbanks, attending West Valley High . While with the Vikings, Tomsich was named the GNAC 2006-07 Male Athlete of the Year and earned All-America honors in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Div . II Outdoor Championships in 2007 . He also posted a career-best time of 3:48 .72 – third-best in school history . Tomsich also won that event at the GNAC Championships in a league- and meet-re-cord time of 3:50 .25 .

Former Seawolf All-American Marko Cheseto is in his second season as a

graduate assistant coach for the men’s and women’s cross country running teams and the men’s and women’s track & field teams in 2014-15 .

Cheseto, from Kapenguria, Kenya, concluded his collegiate career as one of the most prolific runner to don the Green & Gold, capturing a combined six All-America certificates. In cross country, Cheseto became first male runner to claim three GNAC individual titles and the first Seawolf to win two West Region titles – earning him West Region Male Athlete of the Year honors in 2009 and 2010 . On the track, Cheseto earned two All-America honors in 2010, fin-ishing sixth in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters . In 2009, he became the first UAA track & field athlete to garner two All-America honors in the same season . Currently, Cheseto still owns the GNAC record in the 10,000 me-ters at 29:08 .28, recorded on April 16, 2009 at the Mt . SAC Relays .

door pentathlon in 2013 . Alewine then defended her title, winning the same event in 2014 . Overall, Alewine amassed 12 All-America honors throughout her career, while being named the 2013 USTFCCA Central Region Field Athlete of the Year . UAA wrapped up the 2014 slate with two top-25 results

at the NCAA Championships in Allendale, Mich ., May 22-24 . The Seawolves also furnished five All-America honors, includ-ing podium results by senior Ivy O’Guinn, junior Franz Burghagen and sophomore Karolin Anders . Also picking All-America hon-ors was junior Cody Thomas, who was named GNAC’s T&F Male Athlete of the Year . An All-American in the 10,000 meters, junior Joyce Kipchumba was named the GNACs New-comer of the Year, while Michael Friess was named the league’s Women’s Coach of the Year . The men’s team finished run-ner-up at the GNAC meet, while the women’s team won second straight league title – sweeping all three running championships (XC, ITF & OTF) for the second straight season . Combined, the Seawolves landed 14 on the All-West Region team, 19 received All-GNAC honors and 16 were named GNAC All-Academic .

INDOOR RECAP

The UAA men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams

concluded their second season of competition with a second con-secutive showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where the men’s team tied for ninth and the women’s team took 13th . Combined, the Seawolves came away with nine All-Amer-ica honors, including an NCAA title by senior Micah Chelimo in the 3,000 meters . At the GNAC Championships, the UAA women’s team defend-ed its 2013 title, while produc-ing the meet’s Most Outstanding Performer in sophomore Karolin Anders. The men’s team finished runner-up at the league meet for the second time . Overall, the Seawolves reg-istered 12 conference titles – 10 individual wins and two relay vic-tories – and picked up 23 all-con-ference honors . Additionally, 19 Seawolves were named All-West Region .

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE / ALASKA AIRLINES CENTER

With members in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the

largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 13-year history . Founded in 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 77 NCAA Division II Top 10 national team finishes in 15 of the 16 sports it sponsors . Six GNAC teams earned Top 10 finishes last fall, includ-ing three by Alaska Anchorage . The Seawolves finished fourth in women’s cross country, seventh in men’s cross country and ninth in men’s indoor track and field . The men’s indoor finish by UAA was the best-ever by a GNAC team in that sport . Simon Fraser and Western Washington advanced their men’s and women’s soccer teams, respectively, to the NCAA national semifinals, while SFU also placed seventh in wom-en’s cross country . Three GNAC teams have won NCAA Division II national titles, most recently Western Washington in men’s basketball in 2012 . Alaska Anchorage has had 17 Top 10 national finishes in GNAC sports, which trails only Seattle Pacific (24) and Western Washington (19) . UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 16 sports – vol-leyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field .

The Alaska Airlines Center

A new era in Seawolf Athletics began in 2014 with the opening of the $110 million, 196,000-square foot Alaska Airlines Center on

the UAA campus . The main arena, with a seating capacity of 5,000, will be the home of Seawolf basketball and volleyball, while the gymnastics team will compete in the 800-seat auxilary gym and utilize one of the top train-ing facilities in the nation . The gymnastics team will also host the 2015 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in the main arena . With state-of-the-art scoreboards, video production and sound qual-ity, the Alaska Airlines Center will be a first-class venue for spectators and competitors alike . Behind the scenes, UAA student-athletes from all 13 sports utilize the Center’s high-tech sports medicine and weight training f ac i l i t i e s , which include a HydroWorx hydrotherapy pool with underwater tread-mill and an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill . Also home to UAA Commencement, high school state tourna-ments, concerts and numerous community events, the Alaska Airlines Center’s additional features include:

• 600 parking spaces, with additional overflow capacity of 1,200• 19 locker rooms• Student fitness center• Raven’s Nest walking track• Suite Level seating• Varsity Sports Grill restaurant

CHANCELLORTOM CASETom Case, Lt . Gen . USAF (Ret .), became chancel-

lor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011 . Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating

officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace Corporation . Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals . In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus . UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population . With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research . Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research . In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty . A second startup incorporated in June 2013 . Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending .Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015 . Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, son-in-law Daniel, and three grandchildren . A graduate of the U .S . Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California . He is a graduate of the National War College, the U .S . Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program .He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North . He is an avid pilot and, of course, a great Seawolf fan .

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSKEITH HACKETTEntering his second year as Director of Athletics at

the University of Alaska Anchorage, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA pro-gram for unprecedented growth and success as a new era begins in 2014-15 . Since arriving on Oct . 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen

the planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that will transform the UAA campus – along with expanded hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex . Under his leadership, the department has developed an official strate-gic plan that will guide the decision-making process and allow the depart-ment to maintain a focus on the mission of Seawolf Athletics . A university and administrative management executive with 37 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community, and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners . In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement, developing partnerships with Global Spectrum to manage the Alaska Airlines Center, Front Row Marketing to oversee corporate partnerships, and Paciolan for ticketing . Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena was also apparent in Hackett’s first year . In 2013-14, the Seawolves not only finished 16th of 315 institutions nationally in the NCAA Div . II Learfield Director’s Cup, but also produced 25 All-Americans, nine NCAA Championships team qualifications and four Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles, while UAA student-athletes combined for a 3 .18 overall grade-point average . Hackett came to UAA after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs . In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities with specific teams, Hackett was involved with donor relations and major gifts, budget, human and physical resource management, and alumni and community relations at Nevada . As a key member of the Wolf Pack’s senior leader-ship team, he was responsible for oversight of all athletics department capital projects, development of the department’s first athletic facilities master plan, and event management for all home contests . Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive Vice President for Special Projects and was Director of the St . Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla . He also served as Executive Vice President and Provost at St . Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla ., from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97 . He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89 . From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball . The native of Nanuet, N .Y ., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan ., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83 . From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div . I Memphis from 1983-85 . Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo .) College in 1976 and an M .S . in education from the University of Kansas in 1979 . He and his wife Patricia have been married for 38 years and have two

UAA’s student-athletes, the beating heart of #SeawolfNation, compete

in 13 NCAA collegiate sports. At the Division I level, UAA fi elds a men’s ice hockey team and a women’s gymnastics team. Compet-ing in Division II are men’s and women’s basketball, cross country running, skiing and indoor and outdoor track & fi eld teams, as well as our women’s volleyball team. True student-athletes, our Seawolves maintained a 3.18 GPA last year across all teams, while producing four conference titles, nine NCAA fi nishes, 25 All-Amer-icans and placing 16th of 315 schools in the Learfi eld Sports Director’s Cup rankings. In September 2014, Seawolf Athletics cut the ribbon on its new home, the Alaska Airlines Center, a state-of-the-art 196,000-square-foot sporting event, training, sports medicine, special event and performance venue that will be shared by the Anchorage community. The AAC will be the new home for the GCI Great Alaska Shootout and is will host the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation’s Women’s Gymnastics Championships in 2015.
