Message from the ACHNE Planning

Committee Chair

On behalf of the Program Planning Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 Association of Community Health Nursing Educators Annual

Institute, New PHN Frontiers: Informatics and Beyond. This year we have an exciting program offering you a wealth of opportunities for professional renewal and personal enjoyment. Join us for outstanding presentations, inspiring speakers, informative workshops and opportunities for networking and dialogue.

Be sure to come early for the pre-conference workshop, presented by the Research Committee and focused on ACHNE’s research efforts and Social Justice. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Arthur Davidson, who will speak on informatics with his session “Role of Informatics: A Local Health Department View.” Dr. Davidson is Director of Public Health Informatics, Epidemiology, and Preparedness at Denver Public Health | Denver Health. He researches, advocates for and seeks to build integrated informatics applications that support both clinical care and public health initiatives.

Back by popular demand, the Education Committee is presenting a plenary session entitled “Employing Informatics in Community/Population Health Assessments,” in addition to the round table discussions, which will be held on Saturday morning.

The many podium presentations and posters cover a wide range of community/public health nursing knowledge and experience from the theoretical to the practical, from local to global, and from novice to expert. Throughout the meeting, be sure to expand your horizons by attending presentations and engaging poster presenters who have perspectives and approaches that are new to you. Take advantage of the many other opportunities for dialogue including breaks, breakfasts and lunch.

And if that isn’t enough, join us Friday afternoon for the annual ACHNE Awards Luncheon. Be sure to include the Friday evening social event in your schedule. This is an evening of fun and food “Friday Night Meet, Greet, and Eat” fun social outing at various downtown restaurants. Institute attendees will have an opportunity to enjoy the culinary delights of Denver while mixing with ACHNE membership! This is one Friday Night Social Event you won’t want to miss! I hope you will be able to explore Denver cuisine with your colleagues.

Are you looking for ideas on how to infuse informatics in your community/population health courses? In this session, we will discuss a variety of multimodal methods for teaching nursing students how to assess the health of aggregates and populations through a variety of big data sets including the use of GIS mapping for assessing vulnerable populations. Resources for students to develop evidence-based interventions will be highlighted. Our presenters will share methods for actively engaging students in the learning process and evaluating learning through population health assessment assignments for the undergraduate and graduate level student.
