26 April 2015

Father Chris Wants You To Know...

Greetings to One and All, Since April is National Poetry Month, I thought I’d take This opportunity to share a poem with you, entitled EASTER COLLAGE LAUNCH Can you feel the waves between cross and resurrection days? Like darkness yielding to light, or morning triumphing over night; like dreary moods fading away, or long-time drudgery ceding to play, visible in human eyes and well-worn faces, Resurrection displays God’s true graces: like burdens surrendered at crosses, or victories triumphing over losses; like old wounds finally healing, and some stony hearts’ reborn feeling. Good Friday’s sadness cannot remain when confronted by Easter’s refrain: like Alleluias! rescued from obscurity, or doubts replaced by surety; like faith chasing away one’s fears and joy sponging up abundant tears. How wondrous is our God’s paschal care, an earth-to-heaven divinity stair.

With love, Father Chris

Fr. Seth N. Awo Doku, Will be celebrating his 25th Anniversary of Ordination to

the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. Come celebrate a joyful Mass of Thanksgiving with Fr. Seth and our Faith Community of St. Joseph on Sunday, June 14, 2015. Fr. Seth will preside at the 11:45am Mass in Church, and the Eucharist will be followed by a reception.

What the Bible Says About "The Rapture"

11

26 April 2015

You may have seen movies about “the Rapture.” Or, maybe you have seen the bumper sticker: "Warning! In case of Rapture this car will be abandoned!" And,

you might have come across or read the Left Behind series of books.

Christians of all times have lived in faith-filled hope and expectation of Jesus' return. Today, many Catholics have

been caught up in the popular hype that all "true" Christians will soon disappear from earth in a "Rapture".

We invite you to join us in a thought provoking, open discussion on "The Rapture" as we examine the biblical

interpretations behind this curious doctrine.

Editorials Deacon’s Corner

Fourth Sunday of Easter - Cycle B

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

I can recall growing up my mom and dad taught my brother and me certain standards of conduct that we were to follow in the company of others. Many of these as I recall had to do with how we behaved in the presence of a woman. Perhaps with today’s standards these guidelines would be considered antiquated, passé, or maybe even sexist. We were taught when we spoke with a lady we were to remove our hat if we were wearing a hat; we were to look directly at the woman, or the man for that matter and speak in a civil tone; and we were NEVER to use an obscenity of any type in front of a woman. Not that we were allowed to use obscenities at any other time. If my mom overheard my brother or me using an obscenity we were promptly marched to the bathroom to have an encounter with a bar of soap. I always smile when I watch the Christmas movie with “little Ralphie” who speaks of the different piquant of bars of soap. How I knew those tastes, intimately! It is this last piece of using obscenities that I’d like to opine about. Today not only does it seem acceptable to use obscenities in public but it seems much of today’s society embraces obscenities as if they were the preferred adjective to employ. It seems I cannot watch a movie without the most vulgar of language being used as if it was impossible to make the point without using vulgarity. Has our mastery of the English language experienced so much of a decline that we cannot converse with each other without using obscenities? My mom would refer to these words as “oral filth.” I must admit it makes me wince when I walk down the street and hear young people shouting obscenities at each other as if this is the acceptable way to converse. Is there anything we parents and grandparents can do to help our young people, to help people in general understand that we can communicate with each other utilizing far more intellectual and yet simple words. I can’t state definitively whether or not my adult children use obscenities in their homes or among themselves and their friends. I can attest to the fact they do not use this type of language in my presence for I would not tolerate its use. And they are aware of this fact. Am I a Holy Roller, or old-fashion? Perhaps. And I’m okay with that.

Reflections

RETIRING NUMBER 2

As a parish we are blessed in many ways, one being the opportunity for family members or dear friends to share a thought or two about a departed loved one at the Mass of Christian Burial. Such is not the case in all Catholic churches on Long Island, and I was disheartened when I attended the funeral of the mother of a good friend and not a word was said on her behalf. It was not because no one could do it; after all, she did leave eight children, 19 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Add a few spouses to the mix, and the odds would indicate someone could have easily and readily approached the ambo, had such permission been given. So, Rita, this one’s for you…

Rita Hanifan lived the kind of life we all aspire to lead. A Catholic Daughter for 75 of her 92 wonderful years, Rita never left the church in which she was baptized and where her final farewell was held. I came along when her oldest was in high school and, coming from a family of four, marveled at how she and her husband John managed to keep things afloat. They instilled in their children a deep sense of commitment to each other, and as they grew older, each spouse was lovingly accepted by the other siblings. While most mothers did not work in those days, Rita became a school bus driver and found herself with even more children to fancy. This was good practice because soon the grandchildren arrived and she was able to make each one feel special…as demonstrated, for example, by her traveling to Chicago last May for a college graduation. Never one to miss an opportunity to be with her family, Rita made a point of traveling from Florida to Ohio to Maine and to New York to see her children and their families at least once each year.

All the while, however, Rita remained a woman of great faith. And with her extended family now numbering 72, she knew that life would present challenges along the way. Her love might not be able to solve every problem, but her prayers, she knew, would help more than perhaps any advice she could give. Prayer was a daily part of her life.

The Hanifan family long ago assigned numbers to family members, and Rita was number 2. I am sure she is now at peace with number 1, and that numbers 3 thru 72 (the latter having arrived in February) will be guided by the love she had for each and every one of them.

PRAYER

Gracious God and Loving Father, we know that the Saints in Heaven are prime examples of the way we should live our lives and that they are also intermediaries to act on our behalf. You also send contemporaries where we can see firsthand reflections of Your ever present love for us. Give us the Grace we need to recognize these people and to emulate their journey to eternal life. We ask that You loving welcome the soul of Rita Hanifan into Your kingdom and bring comfort to the many she leaves behind. This we ask in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. .
