One of the joys of partnership with others is the broad range of experiences that come into our lives--experiences we may never have had if we had not joined in partnership with people of other ethnic or cultural backgrounds. World missions involvement is a great example of this truth, as people creatively raise funds, serve, and pray for others to the glory of God. The Salvation Army currently serves in one hundred and twenty six countries. In order to provide the chance for relationships and a better understanding of each other, countries are partnered with just a few other countries in a program appropriately called Partners In Mission. Currently the USA Central Territory is partnered with the Caribbean, India South Eastern, Kenya East , Hungary and Mali. In this issue of World Missions Perspectives, you will see examples of some of these partnerships. We have so much to learn about God and His world. USA Central Territory World Services donations are making an impact around the world! Here are several examples how your World Services donations are being utilized in our Partner in Mission locations!

CARIBBEAN TERRITORY Project Name: Vergenoegen Corps Building Repairs, Guyana Amount: $5,000.00

Project Details: The roof at the Vergenoegen Corps building is in a state of disrepair and during the frequent rain, water leaks into the corps building. This project is to repair the roof and associated guttering. With the remaining funds, the corps building will be painted and repairs will be made to the windows and walls.

INDIA SOUTH EASTERN TERRITORY Project Name: Corps Prayer Halls Amount: $151,031

Project Details: This project allows for the construction of 20 corps prayer halls in the India South Eastern Territory. In most cases, the current prayer halls are very old and in deplorable condition. In other cases the congregation has outgrown the prayer hall and the building must be expanded to allow for all attendees to gather inside of the building.

KENYA EAST TERRITORY Project Name: Kabete Compound Water Supply Amount: $4,865.00 Project Details: Water is a problem on the Kabete Compound, partly due to the demand from the children’s home, nursery, and Salvation Army quarters but mostly because of the inconsistent supply provided by the water company. The plan is to improve the water storage capacity within the compound and establish a back-up system that will kick in when the water supply for the water company is poor. This project will include 2 new 5000 liter tanks with 20 ft water stand (one ground level, one on stand); 1 water pump; and the connection of a back-up water system to the exiting piping system. The storage tanks will be filled overnight and other off peak times. The water will then be stored in the large tanks to be utilized when water supply is poor.

Project:FAST

On behalf of Lt. Colonel Paul Smith, Territorial Secretary for Program, we are happy to announce the 2015 Central Territory Summer Mission Team! This year all three overseas teams will minister in Partners in Mission locations.

The World Missions Department is

pleased to announce the 2015 fall

Global Mission Team opportunity to

the Kenya East Territory! This will

be a construction team and there are

spaces available for both skilled and non-skilled workers.

Dates: October 19-29, 2015

Personal contribution:

$1,000*

Applications due July 15.

Team members will not be

selected until this deadline.

*Personal contribution includes air travel to Kenya, visas, housing,

food, and ground transportation. Not included are passport fees,

immunizations, travel to THQ in Chicago, and personal money for

gifts.

The World Mission Department is excited to announce that the Project 24/29 materials have been updated and the program is being rebranded as Project: FAST! Project: FAST is a Salvation Army youth event designed to teach young people about world hunger and preventable diseases that take the lives of tens of thousands of children every day. The acronym FAST describes the basic components of the program—Fundraising, Awareness & Serving Together—and the program is aptly named as program participants practice the discipline of fasting.

The first Project: FAST event was held at the Oakbrook Terrace Corps February 20-21, 2015. The focus for this event was the country of Haiti. Two former missionaries to Haiti shared information about the beautiful country and lessons they learned while living there. The youth played games, worshipped, spent time in prayer, reflected through activities such as writing a personal Psalm and drawing pictures that represented hope, and served by packing meals for children in need. In solidarity with those worldwide who daily experience hunger, throughout the event the youth fasted from food. The following Sunday the young people set up an interactive marketplace to share what they learned with the entire corps congregation. They used the opportunity to raise funds to help support some of The Salvation Army’s chicken, cow and goat livelihood projects in Haiti. It was a lively celebration as some youth walked around with baskets soliciting donations while others

dressed up in cow and goat costumes to help raise awareness. There were Haitian-made craft items such as bookmarks and napkin holders available for purchase. Even the youngest members of the corps were drawn in through a station where children could decorate and wear animal-shaped masks. One of the Project: FAST participants, Stephen Jordan, is a skilled craftsman so he began his own “Buy a ‘Bag-Goat’” campaign where he took orders for custom-made Baggo sets. He received 13 orders for Baggo sets which he constructed and then, along with a team of youth, painted with various sports logos. Stephen raised $1,375 for goats through his Bag-Goat sale. In all, through this first-ever Project: FAST event, the Oakbrook Terrace youth group raised $3,700, which will provide 3 cows, 16 goats, and 50 chickens for communities in Haiti. These animals will provide income, food, and hope for the receiving communities! Would you like to host a Project: FAST event? Resurrection Run

partners in mission >>> Do you know how our territory has engaged with our Partners in Mission over the last 12 months?

• Sponsored delegates to attend the Global Conversation and then hosted three of our PIM guests in our territory

• Hosted Major Chris Matthias of Jamaica for our territorial commissioning and the Brengle Institute

• Three different adult Global Mission Teams worked alongside the officers and soldiers in Haiti, Jamaica, and Trinidad.

• Young adult Summer Mission Teams supported and served with our brothers and sisters in our Partner locations of the Bahamas and Hungary.

• Corps and divisional mission teams ministered in the Bahamas and Suriname.

• The Des Plaines Corps/Metropolitan Division hosted a mission team from Jamaica for corps meetings, youth councils and other ministry in the division.

• Several small fundraising projects were held for Partner locations to raise funds for needs such as water tanks and school needs.

This year, on Easter Sunday, the Des Plaines Corps expanded its Sunrise Worship

Meeting to include a Resurrection Run World Services Fundraiser. In order to be

part of the event, all participants gave at least a $10 donation to World Services.

The Lord blessed 81 participants with warm (enough) temperatures to spend the

early

morning on

the trail of

Lake

Opeka.

lap equaling

1.25 miles

while

runners

completed 2

laps. A

number of

participants

accepted the Water Challenge and carried jugs of water as they travelled in

recognition of those throughout the world who do not have accessible water. This

inaugural event raised over $300!

Teens Increase their Global Awareness

In March 60 teens of the Norfolk Corps and Omaha Kroc Center gathered together

for a overnight lock-in. While the young people had a great time playing fun

games, earning prizes, creating community and making new friends, they also

engaged in activities to increase their global awareness and understanding of

issues such as hunger. Using dry pasta to represent the distribution of the world’s

wealth, the young people were surprised to see the inequality that exists in the

world. They were then encouraged to do something to help in the fight against

hunger. At the end of the lock-in, the sleep-deprived teens were excited to share

what they had learned through these various activities:

“Around the world people

don’t have the same amount

as others, that’s unfair!”

“Think about how much you

get and be grateful about it.”

‘Be even, not odd—not

everything is ‘even’ you have

to ‘equal it’”

The corps will hold their World Services ingathering in the middle of April and the

young people, along with the rest of the congregation, will have the opportunity to

put these lessons into practice by giving financially to help those who have less.
