Why Buy Local?Local farmers choose their varieties based on good flavor instead of shipping characteristics

Locally grown food, purchased soon after harvest, retains its nutrients

Support family farms and support your preferred production methods

    Conserve farmland and your community

Fewer miles from field to table reduces fossil fuel consumption and resulting air pollution

    Less packaging means less waste

Buy in bulk and store foods yourself

Your dollar stays in your community to support other businesses

Look for color coded location dots indicating four Essex County regions: Green = Northwest Blue = Northeast Red = Southeast Yellow = Southwest Look for the Adirondack Harvest logo next to member businesses: a sign of commitment to the promotion and support of local agriculture. Community Supported

Agriculture (CSA) is a business model that directly connects farmers and consumers. Consumers purchase a share of the farm’s harvest early in the year and pick up freshly harvested produce weekly throughout the season.

  • Are your dairy products locally produced? Check the stamped labels on your dairy products. Some milk travels thousands of miles! See the dairy plant processing code circled at left? Look for a code starting with “36” to know that your milk was processed in New York State or “50” if it was processed in Vermont. Often, this milk is from local dairy farms. Or join a dairy CSA!

The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) provides coupons for fresh fruits and vegetables to people eligible for WIC and Senior Nutrition Programs. FMNP coupons are accepted by some farmers at Farmers’ Markets with signs at their booths. Farmers that accept WIC Fruit & Vegetable checks are indicated with “WIC” in their listing. For more information on the WIC program call 518-873-3560 or for Senior FMNP coupons call 518-873-3695. People enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, can use their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards at Farmers Markets that are equipped with EBT machines. Consumers should check at individual markets to determine FMNP, WIC and EBT acceptance.

  • USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map for Essex County

Hardiness ZonesEach USDA planting zone has its own schedule for sowing seeds. If you’re new to vegetable gardening, you’ll want to know that there is a right time to sow each variety of vegetable seed. By following the zone chart for both cool and warm season vegetables, you’ll be sure to sow your seeds in the

correct window of time, enabling optimum sprouting and yield. And don’t forget, the seeds you pick are also important. Even if you are an old

hand in the vegetable garden, the USDA zone planting chart will be a useful tool for organizing your spring and summer vegetable planting.
