“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” - WINSTON CHURCHILL

Gandhi once urged us to “be the change you wish to see in the world.” Sage advice—especially here at Berkeley Law—given the clarion call for change we’re hearing in so many corridors of legal education. From classrooms to clinics, financial aid to field placement, the model for how to best recruit and train tomorrow’s lawyers is evolving rapidly.

Fortunately, those who inhabit this phenomenal school do not fear change, but rather embrace it. In fact, they’re often the ones making it. And in so many instances, that change wouldn’t be possible without our inspiring alumni and friends.

Your financial support empowered us to do some amazing things this year: Protect consumers against identity theft and other online privacy concerns. Provide legal and organizational advice that enabled local startups to take flight. Save low-income tenants in Oakland’s Chinatown from scurrilous eviction efforts. Guide local government agencies on how to best administer water-conservation programs. Help Mexican law professors and students implement their country’s new criminal justice system. The list goes on and on.

Donors like you give Berkeley Law a stronger voice in the world by making it accessible to brilliant students from all backgrounds—and by helping them gain the best possible training once they’re here. The incredible things they do with that training, both while they are with us and long after they leave Boalt Hall, fortify our foundation and validate our purpose.

But we cannot rest on our laurels, and indeed, we still have some catching up to do. For decades, the school had no need to create a culture of philanthropy amid miniscule tuition and California’s strong state support for public higher education. But those days are long gone. To remain excellent, we must rely on our alumni community to pay it forward by supporting the next generation of Boalties. Currently, our alumni giving percentage is not on par with our peer law schools. Buoyed by our shared love for this school and its mission of excellence, I am confident that we can—and will—do better.

Of the many reasons why I feel so blessed to serve as interim dean these past nine months, none is more powerful than seeing how much our graduates care about their school. Every day, you affirm Berkeley Law’s passionate commitment to our students, our community, and our state.

Thank you for making this law school a place where remarkable is the norm.

WHY GIVE. “Berkeley Law allowed me to reach a level of

professional achievement I never imagined was

possible. During my time as a student, tuition was

practically free thanks to support provided by the

State of California. This was, in effect, a scholarship

provided to UC students of my generation. I owe a debt of gratitude for that opportunity, and I fund scholarships so that today’s students have the same opportunity to realize their greatest aspirations.”CATHERINE DEBONO HOLMES ’77 PARTNER, JEFFER MANGELS BUTLER & MITCHELL

“I really value what our financial aid program has done

for me personally and how it creates a diverse student

body that I’ve learned so much from here. There’s no

substitute for attending school with driven students

from different backgrounds who have wide-ranging

perspectives. A thriving aid program makes Berkeley Law a reality for students who otherwise couldn’t afford it, and ensures that they aren’t pulled to other schools by financial considerations.” JORDAN BOCK ’17 MANAGING EDITOR, CALIFORNIA LAW REVIEW; ASSOCIATE EDITOR, BERKELEY JOURNAL OF CRIMINAL LAW; BOARD OF ADVOCATES MOOT COURT TEAM; CO-DIRECTOR, FOSTER EDUCATION PROJECT; 2017-18 CLERK, U.S. NINTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS JUDGE MICHELLE FRIEDLAND

ACCESS + OPPORTUNITY“My parents emigrated from Mexico. When I was three,

they divorced due to my father’s domestic violence and

substance abuse. I grew up in a small trailer watching my

mother work 60 hours a week waitressing and cleaning

houses; I began working alongside her at age six.

As a first-generation American citizen and first-generation professional student, I’m appreciative that Berkeley Law is devoted to providing resources and guidance for students who come from similar socio-economic backgrounds as me.”ARACELY ABARCA ’18 BERKELEY LAW OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT; LA RAZA STUDENT ASSOCIATION BOARD; EAST BAY COMMUNITY LAW CENTER CONSUMER JUSTICE CLINIC; BOARD OF ADVOCATES MOCK TRIAL TEAM; BERKELEY JOURNAL OF CRIMINAL LAW

“I was a first-generation professional student, so it’s

exciting to help Berkeley Law attract these students—

and to see their growing presence benefit the school

and the profession. In addition to supporting that

effort, I give back because the fantastic education and professional opportunities I received at Berkeley Law are responsible for many close friends, strong business relationships, and indeed my livelihood. I want to help provide those same far-reaching benefits

to today’s students.”

“My father was a refugee from Nazi Germany who

barely escaped. My mother’s parents were working-

poor immigrants. My parents instilled in me the

importance of compassion and helping those less

fortunate, and part of Boalt’s appeal was its public

interest commitment. I support the Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) because it facilitates careers promoting social good. Our best and brightest should be able

to afford to join organizations and agencies that fight

for social justice.”

attended law school without LRAP. My work at Root

“I grew up without much exposure to the legal or

business world. Berkeley Law enabled me to not only

pursue a legal career, but to do so with incredible

options and a tremendous network of people who

have inspired and supported me. I want this school to continue to serve that role for future generations of students, so I’ve made it a priority to give back in all the ways that I can.”CARLY O’HALLORAN ALAMEDA ’06 PARTNER, FARELLA BRAUN + MARTEL; MEMBER, BOALT HALL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS

“The law school and its Berkeley Center for Law,

Business and the Economy form significant

parts of my giving because they’re dedicated

to educating diverse students who embrace a

deeper understanding of the world’s complexity

and interconnectedness. These future lawyers will be leaders in business, government, and the social sector, and my investment in their enhanced capabilities will result in more effective problem-solvers as they engage in the innovation economy.”NANCY HEINEN ’82 STRATEGY CONSULTANT AND BOARD ADVISOR, SILICON VALLEY SOCIAL VENTURE FUND; FORMER SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL, APPLE

its diversity. Getting involved with multiple groups

allows me to engage with so many amazing

individuals. Each group attracts a unique subset

of students who challenge me in a different way.

That’s part of what makes alumni involvement meaningful for students here—our alums are doing incredible things, and interacting with them inspires us

to pursue paths we sometimes never would

have envisioned.”

“With its robust curriculum and extensive resources outside the classroom, this school offers so much for students interested in business law issues. The financial industry is poised to

undergo some radical changes in the next decade.

Berkeley Law provides so many programs—and so

many technology, financial, policy, and economic

experts—to help me forge a broader understanding

of what new regulations and policies should look

like in an evolving industry.”

“I have complete faith in Jeff Selbin, my professor

from way back, and in Berkeley Law’s clinical

program. The more I learned about Jeff’s Policy

Advocacy Clinic, the more inspired I became by its

work to create lasting solutions to otherwise intractable

problems facing low-income people. There’s an innate satisfaction one derives from helping others, and it’s a privilege to support those who work tirelessly on behalf of groups who need it most.” KELLY DERMODY ’93 SAN FRANCISCO OFFICE MANAGING PARTNER, LIEFF CABRASER HEIMANN & BERNSTEIN

“I was drawn to the Policy Advocacy Clinic for its unique approach to advocacy and collaborative work environment. Rather than prescribe solutions

from the stratosphere, the clinic develops policy

strategies by working with organizational clients who

are in direct contact with the people that policy will

affect. Our new report, which sprang from homeless

people’s stories of being harassed in Business

Improvement Districts, explores how those districts fuel

California’s rising criminalization of homelessness.”

“Berkeley Law’s Summer Fellowship Program enabled me to take an otherwise unpaid internship at the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. My legal research provided advice to the Police

Department, Fire Department, Board of Supervisors,

Arts Commission, and other municipal units. It was

rewarding to apply skills I learned as a 1L in a real-world

setting, and to get involved in local issues from a legal

standpoint—especially because some of them were

very controversial.”

“Life tends to be circuitous, not linear, and I appreciate

the critical thinking skills learned at Berkeley Law that

have been so helpful in navigating my career twists and

turns. I’m also heartened that the school recognizes its special responsibility to produce lawyers who will represent the interests of all of segments of society—not just the wealthy and powerful—by cultivating talented students on a mission to change the world for the better.” DON TAMAKI ’76 PARTNER, MINAMI TAMAKI

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

“My wife, Lisa (’91) and I feel that giving to Berkeley

Law is a high-impact way to allocate our philanthropic

resources. The school’s culture is very much

Silicon Valley’s culture, with its collaborative and

change-the-world-for-the-better values. Berkeley

has always been a tremendous resource to the tech

community. Last year’s launch of Startup@BerkeleyLaw continues that tradition by providing important legal support to new local ventures—while giving students unique opportunities to work with them directly.”MATT SONSINI ’92 PARTNER, WILSON SONSINI GOODRICH ROSATI

TECH TRADITION

“Berkeley Law was my top choice for several reasons.

I hope to represent technology clients in a transactional capacity, and Berkeley’s technology law program is second to none. Berkeley also emphasizes

developing practical skills useful to technology

companies and the law firms that represent them. But

perhaps most importantly, students truly enjoy being

here and around each other. At Google, some of my

favorite lawyers to work with were Berkeley alums.”

Participation is the percentage of alumni who give to the school—and a key indicator of how engaged our graduates are in their alma mater. Last year’s donor participation rate was 18 percent. Help us drive that number up to 25 percent by 2020. Gifts of all sizes, no matter how small, make a difference.

REVENUE DIVERSIFICATION OVER TIME: The State of California once provided more than 95 percent of the law school’s operating budget. This past fiscal year: 12.7 percent. To offset that decline, tuition and fees for JD and LL.M. students now comprise more than 64 percent of our revenues. Berkeley Law clearly faces a far more challenging financial path than in years past. With tuition capped for the next three years, revenue from other sources is essential for our school to sustain its excellence and fulfill its public mission.

Today, the figure seems downright laughable to GARY SHAPIRO ’66. “I paid $120 a semester for my legal education,” he says. “There was no culture of giving instilled on my class because Boalt was state-supported and we anticipated it would always remain so. Obviously, things have changed and alumni giving is essential to maintaining the school’s stature and reputation.”

Having served on reunion committees and the alumni association board, Gary appreciates the school’s financial challenges. He also appreciates and supports the Berkeley Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies. With Jewish students facing “rising anti-Semitism and adversarial environments” on university campuses, Gary says the Institute “provides the programming, leadership, and space to help combat this problem.”

HOLLY FUJIE ’78 confesses to the occasional jealousy pang. “It’s hard for me to recognize Berkeley Law’s curriculum as even vaguely related to what I experienced,” she says. “The opportunities students have to learn practical skills and affect the national and international legal landscape are absolutely breathtaking.”

Holly credits Berkeley Law for lifelong friends, instilling the value of public service, and Lee Cotugno ’77—her husband of 38 years. “More than any other Top 10 law school, Berkeley needs alumni support to maintain and increase its prestige and influence,” she says. “It’s frankly in my own best interest to give time and money for this purpose, as the higher the school’s profile and ranking, the more my degree is worth.”

Tax lawyer KAREN BOWEN ’86 knows when the numbers don’t add up. Juxtaposing the drop in state support of higher education and corresponding tuition hikes, she sees an unsustainable pattern. “When I went to law school, I couldn’t imagine going into significant debt to fund my continued education,” she says. “I’d like to keep the financial investment required of current students as manageable as possible.”

Karen’s support honors her training from professors such as Babette Barton ’54, who inspired her “to envision a life in tax, which has been interesting and rewarding.” But the most indelible impression the school made came outside the classroom. “Boalt challenged me to examine the world from different perspectives,” Karen says. “I grew to love the community.”

For MATT WEIL ’91, bringing educational opportunities to underserved communities has long been a family affair through the Patricia and Christopher Weil Family Foundation. “Berkeley Law fits right into that giving priority,” Matt says. Noting the school’s proud tradition of meaningful work on children’s issues and social justice, he believes “those students and their colleagues will leverage my investment into positive impacts throughout the Bay Area and beyond.”

As a law student, Matt quickly came to view his eventual degree “as a source of responsibility, not just privilege. I could have gotten a top-notch legal education at several other law schools, but I don’t know of any other place so imbued with the ethos of service that pervades Berkeley Law.”

YURY KAPGAN ’01 calls his law school experience “transformative … I owe where I am today to Berkeley Law. Many of us do.” From his perspective, “it’s important that everyone in our alumni community share the responsibility of giving back to the place that got us to where we are.”

A former director of Partners in Leadership—Berkeley Law’s annual fundraising campaign that strives for 100 percent alumni giving from organizations with multiple graduates—Yury wants to help build a culture of philanthropy. “That’s the best way to ensure our law school stays on top,” he says. “It also helps provide future students the best chance at succeeding, and then giving back to the school once they graduate and enjoy fulfilling careers.”

The daughter of low-income immigrants, TAM MA ’11 credits Berkeley Law’s dream-enabling summer fellowship and loan repayment assistance programs for her thriving consumer advocacy career. “I give back to support the next generation of students who are committed to working for a more just society,” she says.

Tam recalls “feeling like a kid in a candy store during 1L orientation.” She went on to help launch the school’s Women of Color Collective, organize the Berkeley Law Foundation’s annual auction, and start a class—Legislative Advocacy for Social Justice—that she co-taught after graduating. “Alums find so many interesting and creative ways to put their legal training to work,” Tam says. “We should encourage students to do the same by teaching and mentoring.”

DRIVING FORWARD

Berkeley Law recently received the largest corporate gift in its history from Hyundai-Kia Motors America, which established an endowment and current-use fund resulting in the Hyundai-Kia Scholarship Program.

Each year, the program will provide major support—typically $90,000 ($30,000 per year)—for one male and one female JD student. Those students must demonstrate academic merit, leadership experience, commitment to law and technology, an engineering or related background, and an interest in contributing to law and policy relating to the automotive industry. The inaugural recipients are TED KANG ’19 and MARIBETH HUNSINGER ’19. Ted worked as a software engineer and application developer before law school, Maribeth as an energy industry engineer and analyst. “I’m enormously grateful for this opportunity and I’m excited by the transformative effect automated vehicles might have on the auto industry,” Ted says. “I’d love to work on policies and regulations that need to be constructed before these vehicles achieve widespread release.”

Working worldwide for a multinational energy company, Maribeth says broadening the role of existing energy alternatives—and supporting the development of new ones—requires “creative approaches to project finance, intellectual property, commercial, and environmental law.” She is “thrilled to receive this scholarship, which indicates the value that both the donor and the school place on attracting students with technical backgrounds.”

ALBERT MORRIS BENDICH ’55 FELLOWSHIP (SAUL ZAENTZ CHARITABLE FOUNDATION)

While defending comedian Lenny Bruce against obscenity charges in 1962, renowned civil liberties lawyer ALBERT BENDICH ’55 met Saul Zaentz—who produced Bruce’s albums at Fantasy Records. Five years later, after taking over the company, Zaentz asked Albert to join as partner and legal counsel. Albert’s work fueled enormous success in music and film.

After he died in 2015, the Saul Zaentz Charitable Foundation established the Albert Morris Bendich ’55 Bridge Fellowship at Berkeley Law. It provides up to four months of funding for graduates engaged in full-time volunteer legal work while pursuing public interest employment.

“Al was a fiercely independent lawyer heavily focused on social justice,” says Foundation Director Elliot Steinberg ’64. “His work contributed so much to the public interest, and this fellowship honors that.”

The Benjamin Ide Wheeler Society was founded to recognize the generosity of people who have included UC Berkeley in their estate plans. Members enjoy an array of benefits that include exclusive invitations to various campus events.

FORREST GREENBERG ’47 cherished community, be it his family, hometown, temple—or law school, as evidenced by his generous bequest to Berkeley Law. Forrest, who died in March, was a legal giant in Stockton who helped launch the city’s Legal Aid office and served as San Joaquin County Bar Association president.

During law school, the bombing of Pearl Harbor prompted him to report for active duty the very next day. He returned after serving as a naval officer in the Pacific, graduated, and started a Stockton firm that today is led by his son, Jeff, and grandson, Michael.

Forrest “still came to the office daily, well into his 90s, saying hello to old clients and greeting new ones,” Michael says. “What he enjoyed most about practicing law was the many relationships he developed and close friendships he made.”

PARTNERS IN LEADERSHIPThe Partners in Leadership campaign aims to encourage alumni at firms, companies, and public agencies with Berkeley Law graduates to work as a team to make meaningful contributions to the school. Since its inception, the program has raised more than $10 million to support the Boalt Hall Fund and pivotal programs. We are delighted to recognize the organizations—and their captains—who participated in the 2015-2016 campaign. Organizations that achieved 100 percent giving among their Berkeley Law alumni employees last fiscal year are noted with a golden bear symbol below.

WAYS TO GIVEUNRESTRICTED GIVINGGifts to the Boalt Hall Fund help the law school address its most pressing needs. These unrestricted gifts are immediately available to be allocated at the dean’s discretion, maximizing the impact of Berkeley Law’s education, scholarship, and outreach.

Such gifts help attract phenomenal students from all economic backgrounds, hire teaching fellows to expand our clinics’ capacity to train students and serve clients, fund otherwise unpaid public interest and public sector summer fellowships, and provide myriad other benefits.

PLANNED GIVINGPlanned gifts to the school provide vital long-term support. They also generate significant tax benefits and create a philanthropic legacy through the estate-planning process.

Planned giving options include bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, pooled income funds, real estate, and retirement assets.

For more information or questions, contact:Amy Ambrose, [email protected]

BOALT HALL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS FY 2016

We are grateful to these board members for their leadership last fiscal year.

100 PERCENT COMMITMENT

Spurred by Past President Nancy Fineman ’86 and President John Kuo ’88, the Boalt Hall Alumni Association Board of Directors has ramped up efforts to better connect the alumni community—with students and each other—and to develop the school’s resources.

Earlier this year, they challenged the board to achieve 100 percent giving to the school—and succeeded.

“The board believes it’s critical to give back both time and money to make sure future students can receive the same excellent legal education that we did.” NANCY FINEMAN ’86 Past President

“By embodying the spirit of giving back to the school, we hope to inspire more widespread support from a broader range of alums.”DUANE VALZ ’96 New board member

“This law school is much more than a three-year endeavor, it’s a lifelong community.”JOHN KUO ’88 President

THE MULTIPLIER

EFFECT

Thanks to our Young Alumni Matching Gift Program, every donation from recent graduates (2006 to 2016) generates another donation of twice that amount. That means a $100 gift produces $300 for the school.

We are grateful for your support, and wish you a joyous holiday season.

TWINS AND FELLOW BERKELEY LAW STUDENTS MARY GRIFFIN ’18 AND FALLON GRIFFIN ’19 REFLECT THE GIVING SPIRIT OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY. LAST YEAR, THEY DECIDED TO CREATE BAGS WITH FOOD, CLOTHING, AND HYGIENE PRODUCTS AND GAVE THEM TO AREA HOMELESS PEOPLE DURING THE HOLIDAYS.
