19 Full Day Workshops Program 1: Flipping Your Classroom Tuesday, October 6, 2015 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Do you struggle with fitting your curriculum and core standards into the school calendar? Have you ever questioned the validity of traditional homework practices? Are you searching for alternatives to your current teaching methods and strategies that empower and revive the students you teach? Are you open to change? If your answer to these questions is yes, then maybe it’s time to consider flipping your classroom. Join us as we learn about blended instruction, discuss and share our ideas and concerns and work to create performance based activities that could be integrated into a blended learning model. Individuals with exposure to Flipped Learning methods are encouraged to attend and share their experiences with the group. Portable devices such as iPads and tablets are welcome so please feel free to bring your own. Target Audience: Grades 5-8 Instructor: Amy Caruso, Mathematics Teacher, West Long Branch Schools Program 2: Building a Conceptual Understanding of Elementary Mathematics Through Questioning Tuesday, October 13, 2015 9:00 am to 3:00 pm This workshop will focus on questioning techniques to elicit student thinking in the math classroom and manipulatives to help build a student’s conceptual understanding of the more abstract mathematical concepts presented in the elementary curriculum. More specifically, we will spend time looking at various digital manipulatives, and discussing the different types of questions teachers can use to elicit student thinking – questions that only require yes/no answers versus questions that require the students to think more deeply about something; questions that require students to justify their thinking, to themselves, to the instructor, and to their peers. Participants will compare question types, and will have an opportunity to examine their own curriculum materials to identify sources of “good” questions. Additional resources will be shared. Target Audience: Grades K-5 Instructor: Dr. Cecilia C. Arias, Facilitator for the Center for Mathematics, Science and Computer Science at Rutgers University & Part-time Lecturer for Rutgers University Program 3: Strategies for the Inclusive Classroom Wednesday, October 14, 2015 9:00 am to 3:00 pm This workshop is intended for fifth through eighth grade teachers, general educators and special educators who co-teach in the content area classrooms. As students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and students with other disabilities are increasingly being taught in general education settings, this workshop presents a brief review of special education law and some common learning characteristics of these students. It will provide teachers with
