WELCOmE TO RIDGWAY
Ridgway, Colorado is nestled in the pictur-esque Uncompaghre Valley and surround-ed by the majestic snow capped peaks of the Cimarrons and San Juans, some of the most photographed mountains in the world. The town is located at the northern entrance of the San Juan Scenic & Historic Byway, one of America's most spectacular highways. With nearly 300 glorious days of sunshine, it is the perfect place to enjoy and explore a broad spectrum of outdoor activi-ties and year-round cultural events.
A quiet Western town with charismatic energy – Ridgway is a way of life. The town was founded in 1890 as the headquarters of the world famous Rio Grande Southern nar-row gauge railroad serving the area's rich silver and gold mines, ranches and farms. Today the railroad is gone, but its memories remain at the acclaimed Ridgway Railroad Museum. Ranches still dot the valley, pre-serving open space so special to the area. There is also an amazing wildlife presence throughout the region. Most famous are the bald eagles which nest in the cotton-woods along the Uncompaghre River.
Ridgway, a certified Creative Arts District, is also known for its vigorous arts commu-nity. The town boasts a new concert stage in Hartwell Park which is home to the Summer Outdoor Concert Series. The newly restored Sherbino Theater offers music, movies and much more. Many studios, galleries, and sculptures are here to discover. Dozens of one-of-a-kind, family-owned shops and sev-eral award-winning restaurants plus a local brewery and a distillery make this an excit-ing place to settle in and spend some time.
We welcome you to Ridgway and encourage you to use this Visitors Guide to help plan your vacation.

Spectacular scenery around our charming Colorado town caught the attention of Henry Hathaway, the director of the 1969 film True Grit, starring Academy Award winner John Wayne as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. In 6 weeks the film crew turned the center of this old rail-road town into 1880's Fort Smith, Arkansas. Hanging Judge Parker's 3 man gallows were erected in the town's beautiful park among the trees planted by school children more than a 100 years ago, and the park became the location of the triple hanging scene.
On the western edge of the park, the firehouse got an added cupola and a coat of red paint for the occasion! It now survives as an artist studio and the movie's livery stable became the present post office. A short walk up Clinton Street, past the Sherbino Theater, will lead you to the living quarters of Rooster Cogburn. The paddy wagon from the movie sits in Heritage Park, on the southwest corner of Hwy 550 and 62. Be sure to visit the John Wayne themed True Grit Cafe and check out all the movie memorabilia!
Several of the famous locations used in the movie are accessible by passenger car. You can head out on a day trip to discover some of these sites and enjoy the state's most photographed mountain scenery.
To the East, towards Owl Creek Pass, Katie's Meadow (sometimes called Debbie or Deb's meadow) with Chimney Peak in the back-ground, is the site of one of the most memorable scenes of True Grit when Cogburn takes the reins in his teeth and charges towards the outlaws with both guns blazing!
And 10 miles West of Ridgway, on Last Dollar Road, are the remains of the movie’s family ranch of Mattie Ross (Kim Darby) where in the final scene, John Wayne jumps his horse over a fence and rides off into into the distance. A scenery that is still as gorgeous now as it was then!
... and a few others classic backdrops.Other Westerns filmed in the Ridgway area include Tribute to a Bad Man (1956) and the epic How the West was Won (1962). Another John Wayne classic, The Sons of Kattie Elder (1965) was based on the lives of George and Charles Marlow, who lived in the Ridgway area for many years and served as deputy sheriffs and town marshals.
Tribute to a Bad Man was filmed on Miller Mesa at the historic Wal-ther Ranch, which was homesteaded by George and Charles Marlow (of Katie Elder fame) The private ranch still features the Marlow's original cabin.

RACC
Whether you are looking for an easy bike path or an off-road experi-ence through the San Juan mountains, you can access a wide variety of back roads and trails from Ridgway and enjoy a fantastic ride.
the ridgway portion of the Uncompahgre riverWay trail begins downtown and travels gently towards Ridgway State Park's Dallas Creek area. The paved trail runs primarily on the former Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad corridor and features a restored railroad trestle just north of town. The Uncompahgre RiverWay Trail will eventually link Delta with Ouray, a 65-mile route along the Uncompahgre River.
For another very scenic ride over rolling ranchland that is a bit lon-ger, follow CR 23, CR17 and river road to Ouray (Approx. 25 miles roundtrip on gravel road).
Just North of town, a ¼ mile ride on the bike path leads to CR10 where on the East side of Hwy 550 you can access a series of trails and loops collectively named the ridgway area trails (RAT). The loops consist of both singletrack and dirt roads, and new trails are constantly being added. Riding the whole network is currently about 10 miles and 800 vertical feet. You will find the most current map at ridgwaytrails.com/trails/
The Ridgway Area Trails Group is the Sneffels Chapter of the Colora-do Plateau Mountain Bike Association (COPMOBA) and is responsible for promoting trail development in Ridgway and in Ouray County. The RAT Group’s goal is to develop a sustainable trail system that will benefit both local residents and visitors by providing more great biking recreational opportunities.
THE RIDGWAY AREA TRAILS
The Dallas trail is one of our most challenging single track with breathtaking views (and climbs!). This trail is not for the faint of heart as it includes a very technical descent into Ouray. This ~30 mile classic can be done as a shuttlle or loop right from the center of Ridgway. For a shorter version of the ride, plan to travel from the Blue Lakes trailhead to Box Factory and back, on the West end of the Dallas trail.
And if you decide to come back for more, the San Jan Hut System, based in Ridgway, can help you plan your next mountain bike trip. The fully stocked huts, strategically located on dirt roads and single-track trails from the high alpine tundra of the San Juan Mountains to the canyon country of Utah, allow for exciting biking/touring multi-day adventures without the weight of supplies and gear.
From the River Trail, the Weaver Trail System and the Angel Ridge Trails (all accessible from Town Park) to high Alpine trails such as the Dallas Trail, there are over 40 miles of single track in what many refer to as some of the most beautiful and scenic trails in the country.

Extensive rehabilitation has resulted in prime habitat for Rainbow, Brown and Cut-Throat trout with catch and release waters revealing deep runs and large pools.
enjoy a Fishing day with the family at the ridgway reservoir:This beautiful setting with a marina and numerous points of access make for a great fishing destination for the whole family. Stocked rainbow & native brown trout make up the game fish within the reservoir.
Be adventurous: Brook and rainbow trout can also be found in some tributaries of the Un-compahgre River. Access to Dallas Creek, Canyon Creek or Upper Cow Creek is more limited, but the reward might very well be a bigger catch.Fishing in surrounding alpine lakes may be the preferred choice for those seeking solitude and grand vistas. A few miles hike will lead you to magnificent lakes and make for great fishing stories. In the Cimar-rons, the waters of Silver Lake Reservoir are more accessible but also offer quality fishing in a serene setting.
A fishing license is required to fish from Colorado waterways. Informa-tion on licences and special regulations may be found at cpw.state.co.us

Take only pictures, and leave only footprints !
Ridgway is the ideal base camp for outdoor adventures and the list of spectacular hikes is too long to list here! Within the San Juan Mountains, the Mt. Sneffels and Cimarron Wilderness, the Uncom-pahgre National Forest, the surrounding BLM lands or just into the Ridgway State Park, there are trails for all experience levels, ranging from easy shorter walks to longer and more challenging hikes.
Be prepared before heading into the high country and get specific information about your hike, location of the trail head, difficulty level, length and elevation gain. Many trails will lead you to high altitude destinations and it is helpful to get acclimated on easier hikes before venturing on more strenuous ones. Afternoon thunderstorms are com-mon in the high country so be prepared for unpredictable weather.
Stop by the Visitors Center or a local bookstore to pick up a good hiking book or a map. The Ouray County Trails organization also has information and updates on the status of the trails, with some maps and pictures of various trails at ouraytrails.org
WALkS WITH VIEWS... In rollans Park, a 0.2 mile stretch on either side of the Uncompahgre footbridge offers a refreshing river escape.
The ridgway river trail starts from Ridgway Town Park to end at the Ridgway State Park at CR24. This lovely trail is paved and about 2.5 miles one way. It crosses the Uncompahgre River on a trestle bridge, offers several picnic areas along the way and a BLM riparian "Watchable Wildlife" area where you may observe the famous bald eagles nesting in the cottonwoods. At 1.2 miles is the Dennis Weaver Memorial Park.
Stagecoach Hill (1.4 miles round-trip) starts from Riversage Drive, 1.6 miles north of the intersection of US 550 and CO 62. This easy hike will reward you with great Sneffels views !
the ridgway State Park offers over 14 miles of marked trails mean-dering through a variety of natural settings and offering spectacular views of the San Juans. (See Ridgway State Park p.36)

The railroad was completed in December, 1891. It was wildly suc-cessful at first – Mears issued silver and gold complimentary passes and planned to extend the line to the west coast. However, the crash of silver prices in 1893 and the subsequent closing of most of Colorado’s mines dramatically affected the state’s railroads, and the RGS slid into receivership. However, the line managed to survive for the next 60 years despite heavy snowstorms, mud and rock slides and economic disasters.

Ridgway had its beginning as a railroad town in 1890. Otto Mears, known as the Pathfinder of the San Juans for his network of toll roads, and his fellow investors founded the town to be the headquarters of their Rio Grande Southern Railroad (RGS).The RGS was to con-nect the new town with Durango, passing through the rich mining camps of Telluride and Rico along the way. The RGS was 162 miles long, crossed more than 140 bridges and trestles and connected to the Ouray branch of the Denver & Rio Grande at Ridgway. The RGS became known as the “Silver San Juan” line and was a tourist favorite for its spectacular scenery and its breathtaking Ophir Loop.

RIDGWAYHOmE OF THE RIO GRANDE SOUTHERN RAILROAD
During the Great Depression the RGS depended on a mail de-livery contract for steady cash flow. Delivering mail by steam train was expensive, so management decided to build automobile-based rail buses to carry mail, passengers and light freight. Seven of these hybrid vehicles, which became known as “Gal-loping Geese,” were built in the Ridgway roundhouse. They were so successful that the railroad stayed in business until late 1951, when it finally ceased operations. Dozens of books and articles have been written about the line, and today the RGS and its Galloping Geese are world famous. It is one of the most modeled railroads in the world, and the Ridgway Railroad Museum attracts visitors from throughout the world. ~ Jim Pettengill

rough mining camps grew into ‘civilized’ towns. The market for beef grew, and the fertile val-ley at the foot of the San Juan Mountains supplied it. More people came, arriving by foot, on horseback, and by covered wagon. Ranching was a hard life – but possible with determination and perseverance. Ranch families helped each other out during fall roundup and branding and spring calving. Small schools educated ranch children, and families gath-ered for social events when time and work permitted.
A favorite activity was the ranch rodeo, which recognized cowboy skills such as roping and riding.
Early rodeo was truly a spectator sport, with little or no barrier between the performers and the audience! ~ Kathryn R. Burke
Since 1920 Labor Day weekend has been a huge celebration in Ridgway. The Ouray County Fair, Rodeos, Parade and the Fireman's Dance are eagerly looked forward to each year. The horse's tails and manes are braided and the pies are baked awaiting the County Fair. The roughstock rodeo cowboys arrive, the kids look forward to mutton busin and the local ranch teams get competitive. This year both the spectators and the competitors will enjoy all of this fun in the brand new arena and grandstands. Make plans to join us! ocrhm.org

rAnching:A RIDGWAY HERITAGE
ridgway’s rich heritage dates back to the late 1880s and the arrival of the rail-road, which opened up the land for legal homestead-ing. Silver mines above Ouray and Telluride were booming. Ore needed to be shipped out, and the miners needed food.

A Vibrant Creative Community in an Inspiring Setting

Ridgway overflows with genuine artsy character and plenty of talent. Its heritage as a railroad and ranching center influenced by its outstanding scenic beauty make it a wonderful place to relax, dine, wander, and create. Stroll through its streets, stopping at the galleries, studios, and innovative businesses which earned it Creative District Certification from the state of Colorado in 2013.
Discover locally-made sculpture, poetry and art in some unusual places, such as Ridgway’s alleys, trails, and parks. If you’re visiting near the full moon, join the fun at quar-terly Ridgway MoonWalks when local artisans, artists, and musicians abound in open studios and galleries. Every Thursday at 6:00 PM for the month of July, come early to stake your spot in Hartwell Park to enjoy the fabulous and well-attended Ridgway Concert Series.
Local color abounds in historic Ridgway on Clinton Street. Engage in conversation. Catch a fun event at the historic Sherbino Theater in its centennial year; watch the Grammy awards and other custom awards being made across the street. Thousands of natural candles take shape not far from the river. Or head to the River Park Light Industrial area to check out brewing kettles, custom ironwork, woodworking, and coffee roasting in process.
Take the time to enjoy our town and delight in its one-of-a-kind places in a grand setting! Look for the yellow highlights on the map, pages 32-33, to link to Ridgway’s creative spots.

The adjacent maintained walk and bike path along the river connects the Town of Ridgway to the south and the Ridgway State Park to the north. Approximately one-half mile south of the Eagle, at the “river bend” section of the path, are benches, covered picnic tables and some restrooms.
Actor Dennis Weaver, known for his roles in ‘Gunsmoke’ and ‘McCloud’ and many other films, was also a passionate environmental-ist. He dedicated 175 acres near his home in Ridgway, which today includes the Memorial Park and RiverSage development with 130 acres of open green space.

Where the Eagle Soars . . .
The Park can be used for special events and activities. To book an event, please contact Rick Weaver, 970-275-8866.
DIRECTIONS:1.5 mi. north of Ridgway on Hwy 550, turn west at the RiverSage sign
A magnificent cast bronze eagle is the highlight of this Park! Created by sculptor Vic Payne and donated to the Weaver family, this impressive eagle boasts a wingspan of over 20 feet and weighs 2,800 pounds. It is the centerpiece of the astronomically aligned medicine wheel, another feature of this wonderful park.
Rated No. 1 Attraction in Ridgway by Trip Advisor, the park en-compasses 60 acres of recreation area and is a permanent wildlife preserve along the Uncompahgre River Corridor. Within the park are miles of winding hiking and biking trails with spectacular moun-tain and river vistas. At the river’s edge is a lovely picnic area.

Located about 6 miles north of the town of Ridgway, the reservoir was con-troversially planned in a location that would have inundated the town site. It was eventually relocated north of town and spared the Ridgway community from inundation but forced the re-routing of U.S. Highway 550 to the east and the abandonment of the Ridgway Branch of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. Construction of the Dam began in 1978 and was completed in 1987. The lake was first filled in 1990 as an aid to irrigation of the Uncompahgre Valley and flood control.
Today abundant recreational opportunities are provided along the five-mile long reservoir for locals and visitors alike. The 1,000 surface-acre body of water allows for boating, fishing, waterskiing, sailing, paddle boarding and windsurfing.
The beautiful Ridgway State Park offers popular campgrounds, a marina, picnic & playground areas, as well as nearly 14 miles of developed trails meandering through the park. Swimmers can enjoy a beautiful beach located at the Dutch Charlie site.
There is a notable wildlife presence — mountain lions, badgers, deer, elk, bears, coyotes, wild turkey, and bald eagles are indigenous to the area. Birding opportunities abound throughout the year. Over 140 species of migratory and resident birds have been identified in the park and the region's bald eagles nest in the cottonwoods along the river and are a common sight in the late fall.
The Park encompasses 3 sites. The Dutch Charlie site was named after a pioneer who ran a boarding house near the present day-swim beach. It includes most of the major facilities and the Park's Visitors Center.
pa-Co-Chu-Puk - meaning “Cow Creek” for the Ute Indians, is located below the Ridgway Dam and also offers campsites, a large group event pavilion, pond and river trout fishing and access to several miles of hiking and biking trails.
The Dallas Creek site, closest to Ridgway, provides daytime activi-ties and picnic sites. In addition, the confluence of the Uncompahgre River and Dallas Creek is a perfect place for viewing wildlife.
Ridgway State Park offers year-round camping. During the high season (mid-May to mid-September), 258 campsites for RVs, trail-ers, campers and motor homes are available, as well as 25 walk-in tent sites for a more remote experience. Three yurts at the Dutch Charlie area provide a fun alternative to RV and tent camping.

mariJUana retail in riDGWaYCONSUMING RESPONSIBLY:KNOW THE COLORADO LAW
■ MUST BE 21 OR OLDERTo purchase recreational marijuana in the state you must be 21 or older and provide a valid ID. Medical patients must show valid Colorado MMR card. It is illegal to give or sell marijuana to anyone under the age of 21. Please do your part to keep kids safe!
■ DRIVE HIGH GET A DUI!Marijuana is regulated similarly to alcohol so think of it like an open container law. Neither drivers nor passengers are allowed to open the marijuana packaging & use the product while in the car.Driving under the influence of marijuana or alcohol is illegal in the state of Colorado. Drivers with five nanograms of active THC/ml of whole blood are considered driving impaired & can be arrested for DUI. It doesn’t take much. Plan ahead and stay safe!
■ HAVE RESPECTThe law bans all public use of any marijuana products. It is illegal to eat, drink, vape or smoke marijuana in parks, sport-ing or music venues, playgrounds, roads and sidewalks as well as outdoor restaurants or rooftop cafes, to name a few. And since marijuana is still illegal federally, you cannot use on federal land: no national parks and no national forests, which includes many ski slopes. Property owners are allowed to ban the use and possession of marijuana on their properties. Not everyone likes the smoke or the smell, please be considerate to others.
■ LEAVE IT IN COLORADOIt is illegal to take marijuana out of the state. You risk being prosecuted in both state and federal courts if you are caught. Additionally, Denver International Airport has chosen to ban the possession, use, display and transfer (giving to another person) of all marijuana on its property.
