World Services: For Every Child a Chance at Life “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a

reward from him.” (NLT) – Psalm 127:3

A true blessing from the Lord, children can

bring hope, joy, energy and promise to our

families, communities, and

congregations. Playfulness, giggles, exploring

are all a part of the nature of children. Whether

on a brand new playground, or a mound of

trash, kids find ways to play and enjoy life. For

the adults that love them, keeping them safe,

well-fed and healthy are first and foremost in

their minds.

But in many places around the world, this is a

daily challenge. Life is difficult and there are

many obstacles a child must overcome to

simply survive. In 2012 6.6 million children

died before their fifth birthday, primarily due to

a small number of common, preventable and

treatable conditions. Many of these deaths

could have been prevented through simple,

affordable care or intervention. Along with

other Christians worldwide, The Salvation

Army, at work in 126 countries, is helping to

reduce this statistic and make it possible for

every child to have a chance at life.

This year’s World Services promotional

materials bring light to the child survival issues

that affect much of the world and explain how

The Salvation Army is working globally to

address these challenges while also helping to

lead people to Jesus.

The World Missions Department is pleased to

share the following World Services resources

with you this year:

Resource Videos—

Throughout the spring,

video resources will be

posted on our website

highlighting some of The

Salvation Army’s child

survival initiatives in Haiti,

India, and Kenya. The

videos will be available for

free at centralmissions.org/

resource/videos. The first

segment highlighting the Kibera Nursery in the

Kenya East Territory has already been posted.

Youth Resources—These resources,

accessible at centralmissions.org/resource/

WSYouth were developed especially for the

youth of the corps to help educate them about

child survival issues. Also, later this spring, the

World Missions Department will be releasing a

5-day Vacation Bible School curriculum based

on the theme “For Every Child a Chance at

Life.” Suggestions for crafts, activities, snacks,

Bible lessons, and even a missions project will

be included. This curriculum could also be

adapted to be used in Sunday School,

character building and more!

Printed Materials—This

year’s World Services

printed materials include a

poster, donation envelopes,

coin banks, and pledge

cards. Use them to

encourage weekly World

Services giving, to promote

the yearly World Services

ingathering or to kick-off the

new World Services year, which begins May 1,

2015. The materials are available free of

charge and can be ordered online at

centralmissions.org/WSOrder. Be watching for

a sample packet of these World Services

materials to arrive at your corps or ARC soon.

Are these

resources making

a difference in

your corps

community as you

promote and raise funds for World Services?

We would love to hear from you!

world services >>> Congratulations to Majors

Deon & Michelle Oliver, along

with their children Caleb,

Giselle, and Liam, who

officially transferred to the

Australia East Territory on January 12. We thank

them for their service in the USA Central Territory

and pray God’s blessings on them as they now serve

as officers of the Australia East Territory.

Majors Philip & Sheila

Davisson have recently

renewed their overseas

term and will be serving at

the Booth University

College in Canada for an additional three years.

Major Philip is the Associate Dean for Continuing

Education and helps professors with online courses

and creating new courses. As the Spiritual Life

Coordinator, Major Sheila coordinates worship and

small group ministry on the campus and teaches

Spiritual Formation to the cadets attending the

College for Officer Training. She is also, by way of a

week-long intensive, teaching a class on

Discipleship. The Davissons request prayers for

wisdom and strength as they work with others, and

rejoice that they will have three additional years to

minister at the Booth University College.

Move That Bus!

overseas personnel >>>

Each year at Regeneration—through the

generosity of our delegates—we raise

money for the international work of The

Salvation Army. This year we raised

money for a bus to transport students to

high schools run by The Salvation Army in

Nagercoil, India. These students come

from outlying areas and are not able to

have proper access to education without transportation to these schools. Though many

of these students come from Hindu families, they enroll in Salvation Army schools that

provide them quality education while sharing the Good News of the Gospel. Currently,

teachers at these schools give their own money to rent a bus. We wanted to help them

buy a bus, which will bless the students and the dedicated staff who sacrificially serve

at these schools. Even more good news! The Salvation Army Central Territory

Headquarters (THQ) agreed to match the delegates' giving! For every dollar they gave,

another dollar was matched (up to $5,000).

Delegates were encouraged to see their

giving as an avenue of worship to God.

Their worship was a display of extravagant

love for God and for the people of

Nagercoil, India. Delegates gave

$6,179.38 bringing the total, with the THQ

matching grant, to $11,179.38. What an

incredible offering of worship!

world services>>>

The Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Divisional

Headquarters is offering a “Casual for a

Cause” option for their employees in order

to raise funds for The Salvation Army’s

work overseas. Employees can either

pay in advance or sign up for an

automatic payroll deduction of $5.00 per

month and in return are able to have a

relaxed dress code on Fridays. The funds

raised help to provide school uniforms

and mosquito netting for residents in

children’s homes in The Salvation Army

India South Eastern Territory. So far over

half of the $3,300 goal has been met!

The Omaha

North Side

Corps held a

Valentine’s

Day Bake

Sale during

their feeding program on February 11. As

a part of the feeding program, clients were

given the opportunity to purchase a bake

sale item for $.75 or two items for $1.00.

As usual, special treats were served as a

part of the regular feeding program that

day, but the bake sale was still a success

as clients wanted to support The

Salvation Army and give back what they

could. As a result of this bake sale, the

corps profited $63.71 for world services!

Throughout this past year Territorial

Headquarters has held several world

services fundraisers for officers and

employees. In the spring over $1,000

was raised to build two complete water

tanks in the Kenya East Territory. In

November, fundraising efforts yielded

$1,140 which were sent to the Papua New

Guinea Territory to repair the generator

for the Kimbe Computer School. In

cooperation with the Multicultural

Ministries Department, during the month

of January THQ officers and employees

donated $268.59 to provide school

uniforms for students at Salvation Army

schools in the Philippines.

Have you held any self denial fundraisers

at your workplace?

Self Denial in the Workplace World Services fundraising and education was an

important element of the Territorial Women’s Conference

held in October. Prior to the event each division/

command was given $500 seed money with the

encouragement to raise even more money to benefit a

water tank project in the Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Territory. Much of the fundraising for this project was

done prior to the conference, but there were several

opportunities to contribute during the conference

weekend.

The Adult Rehabilitation Centers Command ran a

boutique where high-end clothing and accessories were

sold with profits benefitting World Services. Also, in the

Pinterest-themed exhibit hall, delegates could stop by the

booth run by Lt. Betsy

Clark to learn about

water needs around the

world and donate to the

water tank project.

At the end of the

weekend it was

announced that over

$50,000 was raised for

water tanks in PNG!

Upcoming Events

world services >>>

There were so many joys on our Global Mission Team trip to Costa Rica, it’s hard to

land on just a few highlights. Our team had a wonderful time together working hard and

enjoying each other’s company. We focused our efforts on the Sagrada Family Corps

in San Jose, Costa Rica. They run a weekday feeding program for children in the

neighborhood. They feed lunch to around 75-100 children every day, many of whom

receive no other meals at home. The building which houses the feeding program was

in very bad condition, needing both a new ceiling and roof, new bathrooms, and a few

other updates and repairs. We worked alongside three local construction workers who

helped and guided us through the project.

One of the fun aspects of our time at Sagrada

Familia is that we ran a VBS each morning for the

children who benefit from the feeding program. It

was their summer vacation while we were there, so

we would arrive at the corps, do a VBS with Bible,

craft and recreation time and then take the kids over

to the dining room for lunch. In the afternoon we

would work on the construction project. We were so

glad to get to know the children that benefit from the

work project we were doingN to play with them and

to show them God’s love!

My favorite part of the week was interacting with our peers in Costa Rica. We loved

getting to know the officers who hosted us, hearing about their ministry. We had so

much fun interacting with the contractor who was in charge of the project. We built such

a great bond with him, that on our last day there, he brought his girlfriend to meet us

and gave each of us a souvenir gift to bring home with us. We loved chatting with our

cooks, and thanking them for the delicious meals they served us. We were excited to

work with the teens of the corps who came to help us with VBS every day as we

encouraged them to continue growing in their leadership at their corps.

Our time in Costa Rica

really was about the

“Cafecito” times. Coffee

is a major crop and

export income for them.

But it also represents a

part of their culture. We

were served/offered “un

cafecito”, a little coffee,

five times a day (at

each meal and snack/

break times). And each

time, it meant having a short time of fellowship. It was in these moments that we were

able to connect with our brothers and sisters in Christ and share life with them.

Becoming friends with them all made it difficult to say goodbye. But this is our prayer

for our family in CR: “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and

the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Cor. 13:14)

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee! Please be in prayer for these upcoming

events in the USA Central and our

Partner in Mission Territories:

• March 13-15—Summer Mission Team

Orientation

• April 9—18—Rockford Temple Corps

Mission Trip to Belize

• April 13-23—Global Mission Team in

partnership with the India South

Eastern Territory

• April—World Services Ingathering

Mission Team. These

dates are tentative and

the location is TBA.

Each corps needs a central mission

partnership big enough to capture the

imagination of the entire congregation. The

Missionary Sergeant plays an important

role in helping to make this

happen! Whether an experienced

Missionary Sergeant or someone just

taking on this role, the new missionary

sergeant toolkit offers resources to help you

succeed in this leadership position!

Check it out at: centralmissions.org/toolkit/.

Also be sure to visit centralmissions.org/

resources where you will find suggestions

for missionary minutes, fundraising ideas,

and bulletin inserts.

The World Missions Department is in the

process of compiling a master list of

individuals who serve in the role of

Missionary Sergeant. Please let us know

the name, email and corps of your

Missionary Sergeant, whether

commissioned or acting.
