sChool nICkname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

2015-16 UCO WRESTLING

DaviD James

The dean of Central Oklahoma’s coaching staff is David James, now in his 34th year atop the perennial pow-erhouse wrestling program and one of the premier coaches at any level of collegiate athletics.

A four-time All-American and two-time national champion as a wrestler at UCO, James ranks second among all college coaches at any level in national championships with 12 and has been named national Coach of the Year seven times.

David has piled up an amazing 384-139-5 dual record against some of the top teams in the country, which ranks sixth among active coaches and 31st all-time on all levels of college wrestling in career wins.

UCO has had 24 top-four national tournament finishes under James, including five runner-up showings, and the Bronchos have also won 19 Division II regional titles.

D.J. has coached 48 national champions and 182 All-Americans at UCO and his career dual record includes an amazing 328-63-1 mark against non-Division I teams.

James took control of the UCO program in 1982-83 and led the team to a fifth-place NAIA finish and 7-6 dual record. The Bronchos asserted themselves the next year with a 11-5-1 dual finish and the first of four straight NAIA championships, winning by a 33-point margin.

UCO had six national finalists in romping to the team title by 53 3/4 points in 1984-85, prevailed by a narrow 7 1/4-point margin the next year and made it four in a row in 1986-87 following a 12-5 dual season.

The championship streak ended in 1987-88 with a narrow runner-up finish, but James took UCO back to the top in its final year with the NAIA in 1988-89 with a 13-point margin of victory.

The Bronchos made the move up to NCAA Division II the next season and were runners-up in both 1990 and ‘91. The breakthrough season came in 1991-92 when UCO went 14-1 in duals and captured its first-ever Division II championship.

The Bronchos won a second consecutive title in 1993 and crowned four individual champions in making it three in a row in 1994 by an overwhelming 61 3/4 points over the runner-up.

James led UCO to its fourth consecutive crown in 1994-95 as the Bronchos rolled up 148 points, the second-highest point total in NCAA Division II history. Central fell just short of a fifth straight title in 1996, finishing second by a narrow margin, and then was third in 1997.

The Bronchos placed fourth in 1997-98 and then crowned two national champions in finishing third in 1999. Another runner-up finish followed in 2000 and the Bronchos tied for third in 2001 after going 13-2-1 in duals.

UCO made it back on top in 2001-02, putting together a 15-1 dual record and crowning four individual champions in winning its 13th title.

James and the Bronchos repeated as title winners in 2003, going 18-1 in duals and finishing with three individual champions. Central finished third in its bid for a third straight title in 2004.

UCO had its 15-year string of Midwest Regional titles ended in 2004-05 en route to an 11th-place national tournament showing, but D.J.’s troops bounced back with a fourth-place national showing in 2006.

The Bronchos captured their 15th title in 2007, following a 15-4 dual season with the Midwest Regional crown and a stirring national tourna-ment performance in beating favored Nebraska-Kearney by 16 points.

UCO was 14-6 in duals, won another regional title and finished sixth nationally in 2007-08 and went 11-6-1 with a regional runner-up finish and another sixth-place national showing in 2008-09. The Bronchos

went 8-5 in duals and finished 15th nationally in 2009-10 and were 13th the following season after going 15-4 in duals.

UCO had another young squad in 2011-12, but still managed a 9-5 dual record and won its first regional crown since 2008 before tying for 10th in the national tournament.

The Bronchos went 13-1 in duals in 2012-13 en route to a fourth-place national finish. UCO was runner-up in the Super Regional Two Tourna-ment and had six All-Americans, including one champion.

Central came back with a 14-4 dual finish in 2013-14 and placed fifth in the national tournament with one champion and two runners-up, then fell to 18th last year with one national champion.

James graduated UCO with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1980 and spent one year as a graduate assistant with the Bronchos. David then served as an assistant coach at Edmond Memorial High School for one year before becoming UCO’s ninth head coach in 1982.

James ranks 16th on the school’s career win list with a 116-16 record. The Del City native was UCO’s first four-time All-American from 1976-80, finishing third as a fresh-man and second as a sophomore before winning back-to-back NAIA national titles.

Kyle evaNs

In his third year as Central Oklahoma’s full-time assistant coach is Kyle Evans, one of the most deco-rated wrestlers in the school’s illustrious history.

Evans joined the staff in 2013-14 and helped the Bronchos to a 14-4 dual record and fifth-place national finish behind three national finalists, including one champion.

Kyle spent his entire career at 141 pounds and was a four-time All-American and two-time national champion for the Bronchos from 2004-08. He finished with a 125-20 record that ranks fourth on the school’s all-time list for winning percentage (.862) and 10th for wins.

Evans redshirted his first year and then beat out a returning All-American in earning the starting berth in 2004-05, winning the regional title and finishing sixth nationally en route to a 24-13 record. He came back the next season to go 30-5, capture a second straight regional crown and finish as the national runner-up.

Evans was virtually unbeatable his final two seasons with a 71-2 record and back-to-back national championships. He became the first UCO wrestler to complete a full season undefeated as a junior in 2006-07 with a perfect 39-0 record that

included 18 bonus-point wins and was named Midwest Regional Wrestler of the Year before sweeping four matches in winning the national title. Kyle repeated as both Midwest Regional Wrestler of the Year and national champion during a dominating senior season that saw him finish 32-2 with 18 bonus-point wins.

Evans became just the second UCO wrestler to win four regional titles and he had a 43-match winning streak that ranks as the fourth-longest in school history. He earned 53 bonus-point wins during his career with a school-record 25 technical falls.

A state champion as a senior at Edmond North High School, Kyle earned his general studies degree in business from Central in 2008 and worked in the medical sales field before returning to UCO before the start of the 2013-14 season.

Casy Rowell

Serving as Central Oklahoma’s graduate assistant coach for the second straight year is Casy Rowell, who ended his career as one of the school’s all-time greats in 2014.

Rowell was a four-year standout for the Bronchos from 2009-14, starting at three different weights and earning All-America honors three times in racking up a 134-32 record to finish second on UCO’s all-time wins list. He had 70 career bonus-point wins, ranking third in major decisions (31) and third in technical falls (17).

Casy went 31-10 with 16 bonus-point wins at 125 pounds as a true freshman in 2009-10 before red-shirting the following year. He returned to the lineup at 141pounds in 2011-12 and put together a 31-12 record while finishing runner-up in the regional and earning All-America acclaim with a fifth-place national finish.

Rowell dropped to 133 as a junior and had a dominating season in finishing 36-5 with 24 bonus-point victories en route to captur-ing the regional title and coming in fifth at the national meet to again earn All-America honors.

Rowell capped his career in sensational fashion in 2013-14, going 36-5 with 18 bonus-point wins and winning the national cham-pionship at 133. He pulled out an overtime win over the defending champion in the national finals to earn tournament Outstanding Wrestler accolades and was named the Central Region Wrestler of the Year.

A three-time state champion at Duncan, Casy earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and is working on his master’s in education.

The trio will be pushing each other all year and it’s a toss-up who will come out on top at the end. Freshman Tim Null adds even more depth.

Coach James Says: “The big thing is we’ve got three guys who have all been starters for us and all three have done some good things. I feel we’re going to be much better here. It will be interesting to see who ends up coming out on top at this weight and all three

are capable. It’s obviously going to be real competitive and that’s healthy.”

133 PoundS

This is a big question mark weight for the Bronchos in that everybody here

is new, young and unproven.Three of the contenders are transfers

in redshirt freshman Blake Dauphin and sophomores Aaron Hane and Brendan

Krask, with rookie Rio Zamora also in the mix. Dauphin may rate the slight edge, but

it’s a razor thin one, and someone will need to take charge.

Coach James Says: “We have all new faces here so there’s definitely some questions. Blake

might have the advantage, but there’s a lot of unknowns with this weight and we’re going to be young regardless of who we put out there.”

141 PoundS

A part-time starter from two years ago and a junior college All-American transfer look to be the top two prospects for the job here.Sophomore Tyler Tustin went 12-9 with nine bonus-

point wins in a part-time role two years ago before redshirt-ing last season, while junior Joshua Ailey was a two-time

national placer at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Redshirt freshman Briar Stopp provides depth.

Coach James Says: “This is another question mark for us. Josh has the most experience coming from

the junior college ranks and he’s proven as a two-time All-American, but this should be a competitive

weight.”

149 PoundS

Senior Spencer Rutherford ranks as UCO’s most accomplished returner and is firmly entrenched here. He went 28-13 with 10 falls last year, placed third in the regional to qualify for the national tournament and is poised to end his career in style.

Sophomore Will Steltzlen is moving up after starting most of last year at 141 and will push the issue, while redshirt freshmen Cody Ryan and Brandon Stanley can’t be discounted.

Coach James Says: “Spencer is our only returning national qualifier and he’s looked tremendous in the early going. He had a really good year last season, but had a disappointing national tournament and is really focused on making up for that. We’re got good depth and those guys will push Spencer, which will make everybody better.”

157 PoundS

The returning starter and a pair of talented transfers headline a

here may be more questions than answers for Central Oklahoma heading into the 2015-16 campaign, but long-time head coach David James refuses to put limits on what his young squad can accomplish.

“We’re young and have to develop quickly, but we have a lot of talent,” said James, who has led the Bronchos to 384 dual wins and 12 national championships during a remarkable 33-year tenure. “I’m not going to put stipulations on where we can go with this group because I really feel they can do some special things.”

UCO returns six starters from last year’s team that went 7-9 in duals and finished 18th in the NCAA Division II national tourna-ment. There are 28 underclassmen on the 42-man roster and who will end up starting at most of the 10 weights is unknown, though competition for the top spot will be fierce at most of those.

“Nobody is guaranteed a posi-tion,” James said. “The returning starters are going to be pressed and pushed and that’s a good thing. Our depth will be better at most weights and it will be way more competitive.

“Last year was a challenge and it was disappointing for our program. It’s expected of this group to get things turned around and I have high expecta-tions on what we can do.”

Set to lead the Bronchos is senior 149-pound-er Spencer Rutherford, a national qualifier last year who should be a prime All-America contender this season.

UCO’s other returning starters are sopho-mores Zac D’Amico, Kyle Factor, Caleb Hawes and Will Steltzlen and senior Je-romy Davenport, though Steltzlen is going up to Rutherford’s weight and the other four each face stiff challenges to keep their spot in the lineup.

“There will be new faces in the lineup and we’re going to have to step up quickly at some weights,” James said. “There are definitely some unknowns and we’ve got to get better every time we compete.”

The Bronchos face another daunting schedule that features 17 duals, including 12 during a tough 26-day stretch in January. UCO will also meet 11 West Regional rivals.

“I think we have a good schedule and I like that we get to go against so many teams in our region,” James said. “January will certainly test us, but it will be good to go through that.”

Here’s a weight-by-weight look at UCO for 2015-16:

125 PoundS

The first of many weights crowded with contenders and the top three all have starting experience at the position.

Sophomore Zac D’Amico went 24-20 while manning the No.1 position all last year, while sophomore Josh Breece and senior Ryan Brooks are both coming off redshirt years. Brooks has 59 career wins and Breece started the second half of the 2013-14 season.

crowded field here, with plenty of fireworks expected in the practice room to determine who emerges on top.

Senior Jeromy Davenport started all last year and went 16-17 with a number of tough losses. Sophomore Dakota Head had two overtime wins over Davenport during a 24-12 rookie campaign at Ouachita Baptist before coming to UCO and junior Bryan Dutton was a two-year starter at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Those are the main contenders, but junior newcomer Danny Car-rillo and sophomore letterman Alec Warren can’t be discounted.

Coach James Says: “This is one of the most competitive weights we have in the room. Jeromy is a senior and started last year, so we know what he brings to the table. Dakota beat Jeromy twice last year and is very talented and Bryan had a nice junior college career. These guys are going to have to be on their toes every day and we’re going to be better, but who will be in there remains to be seen.”

165 PoundS

UCO is a little thin at this weight, though several 157-pounders could bump up if needed.

Redshirt freshman Gage Stallworth is favored to take over the starting role and all signs point to him having an immediate impact, but he’s another untested youngster the Bronchos will be counting on.

Sophomore letterman Josh Jacobson adds depth, while sophomore newcomers Danny Carrillo and Bryan Dutton are available to move up from 157.

Coach James Says: “We’re really young here. Gage is the front-runner and though he didn’t get any mat time last year he did get to practice every day with one of the best we’ve ever had (national champion and 2014-15 Division II Wrestler of the Year Chris Watson), which obviously benefitted him. There are some guys at 157 who could help us here as well. We’re talented at this weight, but there’s still some questions because we’re so young.”

174 PoundS

A highly-touted freshman was scheduled to step in and assume the controls here, but pre-season surgery will probably keep Miguel Barreras sidelined all year and another youngster is ready to step in.

Redshirt freshman Mason Thompson showed great improvement while comping in several open tournaments last year and has shown in the early going that he’s ready to make an impact. Senior letter-man Dylan Harmon is also in the mix after seeing some starting duty last season.

Ryan Anderson is another redshirt freshman in the mix and junior transfer Brock Warren could be here or at 184.

Coach James Says: “We felt good bringing Miguel in at this weight, but he had surgery and will probably redshirt, but we’ll

Kyle Factor

re-evaluate things in December. Dylan got some time last year and is a real physical wrestler and Mason is a very talented young guy who’s really working hard to get his chance. We’ve got some questions here as well.”

184 PoundS

Several prospects are lined up to battle for the starting assignment, including the returning starter.

Sophomore Caleb Hawes filled the No. 1 spot all last year and made great progress during a 13-15 rookie season, but a host of challengers are ready to compete for the position.

Junior John Finn is a two-year letterman looking to work his way into the lineup after dropping down from 197 and redshirt

freshman Jaden Davenport will also contend.Junior Brock Warren and freshmen Brody

Largent, Elijah Saboor and Walker Smith can’t be overlooked.

Coach James Says: “Another real com-petitive weight. John and Caleb have wrestled

for us and are the most experienced, but there are several young guys capable of helping. We’ve got a lot of bodies here and it will be very interesting to see how everything shakes out.”

197 PoundS

Junior Greg Wilson is expected to take over and have a big impact, but the talented big

man won’t be eligible until the second semester after coming to UCO

from Division I Oklahoma during the winter break last year.

Sophomore letterman Marlon Houston and freshman Thomas She-perd are expected to fight it out for the starting berth early.

Coach James Says: “Greg is the guy if every-thing goes according to plan, but he’s not eligible

until the second semester. He wrestled quite a bit at OU and is very talented. There’s some other guys who will help out.”

HeavyWeigHt

The numbers are low with just two at the weight, but it will be an interesting showdown between sophomore Kyle Factor and junior Evan McGee.

Factor started all last season, going 21-17 with 11 falls in his return to the mat after a two-year layoff, and McGee is a former junior college All-American coming off a redshirt season. Both have the ability to score plenty of points and be excellent anchors for the Bronchos at the end of the lineup.

Coach James Says: “I think we’re going to be better, but we only have two guys. Kyle got a lot of matches in and did a good job last year and Evan was a junior college All-American so we know what he’s capable of. We’ll let them battle it out and see what happens.”

2014-15 season Review

NWCA Division II National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind. and went 3-2 in that event to finish seventh.

UCO edged Augustana 19-16 in the first round as Rutherford had a big first-period pin, while Reed, Davenport, Watson and 184 Caleb Hawes also won. Reed and Watson had the lone wins in the quarterfinals as top-ranked Notre Dame claimed a 29-7 victory.

The Bronchos stayed alive with a 25-12 consolation triumph over Lake Erie as Reed, Rutherford, Davenport, Watson, Hawes, Factor and 141 Will Steltzlen all prevailed, but McKendree won the last three matches to rally for a 17-16 win in the next match.

UCO trimmed Lindenwood 20-19 for seventh as Factor pulled out a clutch 5-1 decision in the final bout. D’Amico, Reed, Rutherford and Watson also had wins.

The Bronchos made their first home appearance the next week and hammered Newman 34-8 behind bonus-wins by Steltzlen,

Davenport, Watson and Factor.UCO went on the road for three

matches in three days the follow-ing week, falling to Lindenwood 19-16 and Maryville 35-7 before ending the rough road trip with a 40-10 rout of Central Mis-souri. The Bronchos picked up three forfeits in that romp, while Rutherford, Watson and Factor added falls.

Central finished the season with five straight home matches, going 2-3 in those.

An early 12-0 deficit and two overtime losses cost the Bronchos in a 22-16 loss to Oklahoma City

in the opener of that homestand, though UCO bounced back two days later to overwhelm Adams State 46-3 behind pins by Steltzlen, Rutherford, Hawes and Factor.

Losses to Ouachita Baptist and Nebraska-Kearney sandwiched the final dual win, a 21-12 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo that was sparked by consecutive major decisions from Watson, Gallo and Hawes.

The Bronchos traveled to Pueblo, Colo. Feb. 27-28 for the West Regional and got off to a rough start en route to a 10th-place finish.

Watson outscored four opponents 25-1 in rolling to the indi-vidual title and Rutherford bounced back from a first-round loss with three falls and a major decision in taking third to qualify for the national tournament. D’Amico was UCO’s only other placer with a sixth-place showing.

Rutherford lost two tough matches at nationals, but Watson wrapped up his incredible season with four easy wins to give the Bronchos their 18th-place team finish and earn tournament Outstanding Wrestler honors.

t was a tough season for Central Oklahoma in 2014-15, though the individual brilliance of Chris Watson took some of the sting out of the disappointment.

The Bronchos suffered their first losing dual season since 1977-78 with a 7-9 record and had their worst finishes in the NCAA Division II regional (10th) and national tournaments (18th), but Watson was a shining star with one of the best individual performances in the program’s illustrious history.

The senior 165-pounder dominated from start-to-finish in putting together a perfect 42-0 campaign with a single-season school record 30 bonus-point victories. Watson captured seven tournament titles en route to earning Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, West Regional and NCAA Division II Wrestler of the Year honors.

“I don’t think there’s any question it was a disappointing year for us,” long-time head coach David James said. “We had a lot of untested guys in the lineup and we just didn’t make as much progress as expected. At the same time, Chris Watson had an unbelievable year and didn’t let our team struggles take away from his individual pursuits. He had as good a year as anybody who’s been through here and that says a lot.”

UCO started the season with three consecutive open tourna-ments, going to the Oklahoma City Open, the Swede Open and the UNK Holiday Inn Open.

The Bronchos took a small squad to OCU to open the sea-son and had three placers in the freshmen-sophomore division in 125 Zac D’Amico (second), Hvy Kyle Factor (third) and 197 John Finn (third).

UCO dominated the field at the Swede Open the following weekend, crowning three champions -- Watson, 133 Dustin Reed and 174 Colton Gallo -- and adding eight other placers.

Watson won again two weeks later at UNK, with 149 Spencer Rutherford adding a runner-up finish while four others placed in the freshmen-sophomore division.

The Bronchos opened the dual season on the road at Ouachita Baptist and dropped a 26-9 decision as only Rutherford and Watson managed wins.

UCO went to Fort Hays State three days later and fell in the opening MIAA dual of the season 29-16, with D’Amico, Ruth-erford, Watson and 157 Jeromy Davenport earning wins.

Central ended the first-semester schedule at the Newman In-vitational Dec. 14 and finished fourth with five placers and two champions. Rutherford and Watson both claimed individual crowns, while Reed placed second, Gallo third and D’Amico fourth.

The Bronchos didn’t resume the season until Jan. 9-10 at the

Joe muller

Now in his eighth year as athletic director at Central Oklahoma is Joe Muller, who has helped return the Bronchos to national prominence in NCAA Division II.

UCO teams have captured 11 conference championships and had 12 top-10 national finishes during Muller’s tenure, with softball winning the school’s first-ever women’s national championship in 2013.

Sixty-three student-athletes have earned All-America honors over the past seven years and the Bronchos have placed 42nd or better three times in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings out of nearly 350 Division II institutions.

The athletic department’s fund-raising efforts have also increased significantly under Joe’s guidance. He secured the largest gift in program history in 2012, continues to grow Stampede Club membership and also introduced a corporate sales initiative that has generated record revenues for the program in just four years.

Academically, UCO’s student-athletes are performing at all-time high levels. For the past six years, the overall grade point average of student-athletes has surpassed that of the general student population and to demonstrate that academics is a priority, the athletic department now hosts an annual Academic Awards Banquet recognizing the achievements of student-athletes.

Central Oklahoma’s Hamilton Field House opened its doors in January of 1965, during which time the school’s wrestling program was shut down.

UCO revived wrestling for the 1972-73 season and the Bronchos of Coach Jimmy Rogers wres-tled their first match in Hamilton Field House on Dec. 8, 1972, drubbing North Texas, 53-2.

Since then, UCO has compiled an impressive 195-59-2 record (.766 winning percentage) at Hamilton Field House. Current head coach David James has a 167-37-1 home record (.817) in 33 years at the helm and the Bronchos are 70-13-1 (.839) over the past 12 years.

UCO had a 22-match home winning streak stopped last year in going 3-2. The Bronchos will host five duals this season.

Hamilton Field House underwent renovation in the summer of 2001, with individual chair-back seats installed on the floor. Ca-pacity is 3,000.

UCO hosted the NAIA National Wrestling Championships in Hamilton Field House in 1981 and ’84, with the Bronchos winning the championship both times. Central also hosted the 16-team NCAA Division II National Duals for five straight years, from 1995-99.

Hamilton Field House was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of longtime UCO coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the early 1960s.

HFH also serves as the home facility for UCO volleyball and basketball. Numerous other events, including the university’s gradu-ation ceremonies, are also held in the building.

Ted, who passed away in 2003, captured the NCAA Division I title at 123 pounds in 1936 and followed that with a national runner-up finish at 126 pounds in 1937. Anderson was a three-time Oklahoma College Conference champion, winning in 1935, ’36 and ’37.

A 1937 graduate of UCO, Anderson was a coach and teacher in the Edmond school system for 35 years. He was principal of Edmond Junior High and Mid-High for 20 years before retiring in 1976.

Central Oklahoma is in its fourth year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II insti-tutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first or-ganized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of be-ing one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts cham-pionships in nine sports for both men and women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis, golf and wrestling.

The women compete for titles in vol-leyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II confer-ence changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics As-sociation.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Mis-souri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges:

Mid-AMericA intercollegiAte Athletics AssociAtion Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph

McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Bo-erigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri South-ern and Missouri Western began competi-tion in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri left the MIAA fol-lowing the 1990-91 season and was re-placed by Emporia State in 1991-92.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lin-coln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort

Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebraska-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and Northeastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the conference with 14 full-time members.

Six schools compete in wrestling -- UCO, Central Missouri, Fort Hays State, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and associate member Newman.
